Two Chicks Obsessed with Books & Eye Candy

Sharing our love of M/M Romance

Unsettled by Zach Jenkins: Quick Review

June 22, 2017 by Denise

He’s a cop who looks like a cowboy and I just have to see his gun.

I’ve refused second dates for years because I’m too much of a mess to hope for any relationship to work out. After one wild, impulsive, and let’s face it, pleasantly filling night with James, I’m ready to throw all of that out the window.

Men are for drinking buddies and dirty jokes… and now, so much more.

Evan is the first man I’ve ever slept with. If I get my way, he’ll be the one I’m with forever. I’m not sure how I’ll tell the other guys at the police station, but I’ve got bigger problems to worry about.

Someone is attacking people on The Strip in August, GA, and they are working way too close to the club where Evan is a DJ. I’ve got to catch whoever is responsible so that I can protect Evan, the man who taught me everything about love.

Unsettled is a steamy, standalone, first time with a man, romantic thriller novel with no cliffhangers.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

The prequel to the book is out on insta-freebie, if you want to grab it.

Where to start….

Okay, first, the epilogue really confused me… I kinda got it, after a little bit, but I was wondering why and when it would come into relevance. James is a cop, a beat cop, actually… just figuring out that he’s not so straight when he goes to a gay club and see’s Trey…. you’re probably not gonna like him, I didn’t from the very beginning, even though Evan seemed to.

Evan is a DJ at the club who has a not so great run-in with James at first, but knows who he is, because he’s his neighbor. That opens the door for something to happen between them, which seeed to happen at warp speed. Like, one night together, Evan was set on it being a one nighter and then BAM… relationship without even talking about it.

Now, people are dying left and right, people from around the club, meaning gay people, but some how, even being on the force… James seemed really out of the loop about… Seems like he would’ve been better informed, especially being that it’s somewhere he hung out with his boyfriend and they all knew and then at work, they all knew… especially his best friend O’Brien.. who I was mad that I liked in the beginning because from the first time he “chased two perps down the alley” …. that he wasn’t to be trusted either. It all seemed a bit predictable and I hated that it too so long for it to be known… Though I still don’t know what the motives were and I’m aggravated that nothing happened to Trey… nobody even busted him in his mouth for being so mouthy.. we couldn’t at least get that kind of karmic justice? He just kinda disappeared…. I didn’t like that.

Other than that, I really liked Evan and James together. It was cute and corny and I liked the way they were together. I liked the mechanic friends, I wish we would’ve seen more of them… I liked that James’ family was so supportive, though I hated that Evans wasn’t. I’m not sure if I’d ready anymore in this series…. I have a thing about bad guys getting away with being terrible and although one gets caught in this one, nothing is explained and I didn’t get any closure…. sigh….
I also found myself liking Rick, kind of… which also aggravated me lol I hope, if he’s mentioned in other books he gets himself together for his son.
Alls well that ends well for Evan and James though… I was happy about that. Good for them 🙂

Overall, 3 pieces of eye candy from me!

Okay… so, first, I loved the cover; it was a really good depiction of this story of young adults, guiding their way through their feelings towards one another, especially best friends Craig and Scott. Having been best friends since they were five years old, Scott didn’t want to tell Craig that he’d been in love with him for the last several years, especially since Craig was dating the douchiest of douchey guys, he was annoying and callous and he knew that Scott had had feelings for Craig and he used it to his advantage to hurt Scott.

It annoyed me to no end that Craig didn’t see it, talk about self-absorbed. He was supposed to be his best friend and he continually let his boyfriend hurt his best friend; then he done it too, more than once in this short little story and he claims to never have known Scott’s feelings nor return them. Except after faced with losing Scott and then having to let him go temporarily, then he realizes that he loved him all along. It was a headache and I didn’t feel any compassion for Craig or sympathy towards him at all. I thought Scott deserved better than him and if I’m honest, I thought they were all too young to be sleeping with each other and confessing their love for each other. Both seemed very immature.
The parts I did like… I loved how Scotts sister Karen was there for him, even if his parents never made an appearance; even after he’d been gone to Paris for two months, Karen had convinced them to go away for the weekend? The same weekend that Scott was getting back? Okay….

Karen’s boyfriend Stanley was also a nice surprise, I might have liked the story better had it been about him and Karen. Seems like he had a heartbreaking yet hopeful story in there somewhere and I found myself thinking more about that than I did Scott and Craig.

Alls well that ends well though, with the help of Karen; Craig plans something to prove his love to Scott when he gets home and even though there were a few bumps in the road, they get there in the end.
Overall, it was a short, friends to lovers’ story and I appreciate getting a chance to read it.

3 pieces of eye candy for me.

deanna review

I love the friends to lovers scenario. It usually makes for a cute story and this is no exception.

Scott has been in love with his best friend Craig for years. Craig has a boyfriend, that we will forever refer to as Super Douche. Scott loves Craig from afar but it gets painful as Craig gets closer to Super Douche. Super Douche knows that Scott is in love with Craig and tries his best to hurt Scott at every turn.

Scott can’t take it anymore and takes an internship abroad to put some distance between him and Craig. Craig immediately realizes that he’s in love with Scott and that he has taken their relationship for granted. He sets out to woo Scott with a grand romantic gesture, hoping it isn’t too late.

At first I had a hard time keeping up, this story is told from three POV’s; Scott, Craig and Scott’s twin sister. I realize this is a new adult story, but Craig seemed really immature in the beginning. Then it was like a switch flipped, and suddenly he was in it for the long haul.

The story was cute and entertaining. Great for a quick read.

Can the touch of a rock god last forever?

synopsis

Not only has he snagged a dream assignment as the memoirist to alternative music’s rock superstar Aubrey King, but he’s also promised to give the beautiful and enigmatic musician a chance for them to forge a relationship. It’s all very overwhelming for Bryan since, up until he spent a sexually charged day and night with Aubrey, Bryan has never even dreamed of being with a man.
Aubrey is completely smitten with the boyishly handsome, young rock writer, Bryan. After their instant spark grows into something more, Aubrey is desperate to keep Bryan by his side for always. He’s promised Bryan that their love is for real, that Bryan isn’t simply one of his rock star conquests.
Their road isn’t an easy one, though. Despite their deepening bond and growing need for each other, other factors intrude. Neither Aubrey nor Bryan is ready to come out, and their relationship needs to remain a carefully guarded secret. In addition, Aubrey has to answer to the demands of his profession and Bryan has to traverse the shifting waters between his personal and business relationship with his famous lover.
Then a secret is revealed and everything in their joint world implodes. Early response to Rockin’ it Forever…

“This book has it all: rocker musicians, incredible sexual chemistry, struggles with being in the closet, doubts regarding the relationship, intense feelings, and the amazing HEA with a forever kind of love.”

Thank you to Morticia Knight for stopping by for a little Q&A!!!
tco-author interview

Morticia Knight Author Q&A Part I

Where are you from, and where do you call home?

I’m originally from the Los Angeles area – specifically the San Fernando Valley. Yes. I am a valley girl. Deal with it.

I escaped L.A. and now live on the northern coast of Oregon with raging wind and rainstorms and very loud, barking sea lions. I make the sea lions stay on the pier though, they’re not allowed inside.

What inspired you to start writing?

Crushing loneliness. I think I was five at the time. Both of my parents worked long hours, and I was essentially an only child because my brother and sister are so much older than me. Making up stories and worlds and other people was a great way for me to spend my time. And I don’t even hear the voices in my head anymore! *snort*

How long have you been writing?

Well, I guess the standard answer is all my life, but to be specific, I started seriously pursuing it when I was twelve. As in, the other kids thought I was a freak. I wrote all the time during class (I had my trusty spiral notebook wherever I went), but after they were done making fun of me, and class got reaaaallly boring, they became curious enough to ask me to read to them out loud. Soon I had them bugging me to finish the next chapter.

So, things started out promising, but sadly, I was turned down by one of the Big Six (back when there were still six of them) I was fourteen by then, so it was one of those devastating teen moments that you don’t bounce back from easily. In other words, I was completely delusional. Then I decided to pursue something much more likely to bring me success – the world of rock and roll. My profession for the next fifteen years was as a singer/song-writer.

Once I Ieft the music industry (and anyone who reads either of the Rockin’ books will get some insight as to why!) I turned my sights back on writing. I had to force myself to no longer write in rhyme, so there was a learning curve there. So, I’ve been writing fiction again since 2011, but for ten years prior to that, I was writing music bios, press releases, reviews and articles for entertainment mags. I was also the ‘as told to’ author on one music writer and one rock guitarist’s autobiographies.

One final side note: The song lyrics from both of the Rockin’ books are ones that I performed and recorded *wink*

What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?

I always say the same thing when asked this question: write as much as you can. Write every day or as often as humanly possible. Make your muse your bitch. Don’t let her call the shots. Even if you don’t feel like writing, do it anyway. Even if its total crap and you hate it, keep going. Because writing is like any other skill – the more you practice, the better you’ll get at it.

excerpt

Aubrey Fucking King.

Bryan hid what he was certain would be a goofy grin behind his fingers. He didn’t need the older woman in the seat next to him on the plane to think he’d lost his entire mind. But the mutual masturbation with Aubrey in the shower that morning was emblazoned in his memory. Their inability to keep their hands off each other had left Bryan with precious little time to get to his hotel, grab his things then make it to the airport without missing his flight. Being trapped on the airplane for his journey from the west to the east coast was the first chance he’d had to relax and dwell on the previous couple of days filled with utter craziness. However, his immediate thoughts had landed on the visual of their slickened cocks rubbing together.

It was difficult to decide which event had him more thrilled, confused, elated, freaked out or stunned—that he’d had sex with his rock star idol or that he’d had sex with a man. He shook his head, unable to help himself.

“I’m sorry, but it’s inflight rules.”

Bryan jerked his chin up. “Huh?”

The flight attendant pointed at his laptop. “I said, you need to stow that for takeoff.”

“Oh! Sorry, I…uh, of course.”

His cheeks heated as if the pretty blonde attendant had any idea what sort of filthy thoughts had been drifting through his mind. She was the sort of woman he’d always been drawn to—confident, attractive, feminine. Another thought tried to wriggle its way into his ponderings, but he preferred putting it off for the time being. Everything had been so heated, so urgent between him and Aubrey—it had barely allowed him a moment to process the emerging lust and connection they now shared.

That was all real, right?

He idly played with the collar of his long-sleeved cotton shirt that was made up of a block plaid pattern in varying shades of blues and greens. Aubrey had commented on the colors, had said he liked the way Bryan’s lighter hair and deep blue eyes contrasted with them. Bryan allowed his fingers to travel under the fabric, to run across his clavicle. He couldn’t feel it—feel them—but he knew they were there. The marks Aubrey had sucked up on his skin. Then there’d been the rather prominent one Aubrey had asked Bryan to put on him so that everyone would know that Bryan was the one to whom Aubrey belonged.

It was silly, really, but it’d also been very sweet. People might surmise that Aubrey had been with someone, but they would have no idea it was rock journalist Bryan Gallagher. Bryan attempted to tamp down yet another unsettling thought and realized he was going to run out of space to hide from everything in his mind in an awfully short time.

No one will know because Aubrey won’t tell anyone he was with a man. But then again, neither will I.
deanna review

I was interested in seeing where this book went after reading the prequel, Rockin the Alternative. I did enjoy this book so much more than the first and I think that was because the book was longer with so much more detail.

At the end of the first book Aubrey and Bryan decide to give a relationship a try while writing Aubrey’s memoirs. Bryan is fumbling through his first relationship with a man and Aubrey is trying hard not to be a diva and rush Bryan.

The two start out strong learning new things about each other and learning to work and live with each other. They battle through having a private relationship versus the image they reveal to the public. Bryan has yet to tell his family about Aubrey and Aubrey hasn’t revealed himself to the world yet.

Someone from Aubrey’s past shows up threatening their new relationship. Aubrey has to decide if he can trust Bryan with his secret, by the time he makes that decision it may be too late.

If you could take the prequel novella and this one and smoosh them together you would have a great story. I definitely felt a stronger connection between the characters that wasn’t there in the first book.

The story was entertaining and interesting. I would love a follow up novel with Jimmy’s story, he made a great supporting character. I enjoyed the music in the book, the lyrics Aubrey wrote for Bryan were awesome.

Amnesia by Sean Michael: Release Day Review and Guest Post

June 13, 2016 by Denise

amneisiasynopsisWho wouldn’t want a do over?

When Thaine wakes up in the hospital after a bull-riding injury, he immediately asks for his lover, Jerry. He has no idea who this man next to his bed is, despite the fact Drew insists they have been an item for the last five years.

Thaine’s best friend, Jesse, calls Jerry. He thinks it’s a pretty crappy thing to do to the new boyfriend, but tells himself it’s unlikely Jerry will come after so many years. He also doesn’t get why Thaine would pass up the opportunity to be with Drew since he’s young, optimistic, and hardworking. In short, everything Jesse ever wanted in a man.

Jerry still carries a torch for his cowboy, so when Thaine asks to go home with him to recover, Jerry agrees. At first they pick up their intense physical relationship right where they left it before the breakup. Jesse, in turn, consoles the now homeless Drew and offers him quite a bit more than a shoulder to cry on. But in the back of all the men’s minds loom Thaine’s lost five years.

Opposites Attract

By Sean Michael

That’s what ‘they’ say, isn’t it? Opposites Attract. I like to think that more than just opposites attract, but it definitely is fun to play with opposites when writing couples. The couples in Amnesia are opposites, even as the men within each couple are opposites. So I had the best of all words with these four men.

Thaine and Jerry are both stubborn and passionate, but one is a bullrider and the other is a business man. It’s those opposites that actually broke them up five years ago. But it’s also those opposites that make their relationship exciting and both men crave excitement.

Then there’s Jesse and Drew. These two are both cowboys, but one is older, the other younger. They fit together perfectly though. Their love is as deep as Thaine and Jerry’s, but they are a calmer couple, they are more… quietly in love, while Thaine and Jerry are an explosion. They both want to settle down while Thaine and Jerry are chasing their next high, both in their jobs and together.

It was fun to be able to explore all their differences, and similarities – for even the most opposite characters can find some points of commonality – with these four men.

deanna review

I love a good cowboy story, especially one with a little angst.

Thaine and Drew have been together for 3 years, after a bull riding accident that almost killed Thaine he doesn’t remember Drew at all. He can’t remember the last five years of his life and he still thinks he’s in a relationship with his ex Jerry.

Jerry comes running to Thaine’s bedside when he learns of the accident from Thaine’s best friend Jesse. Jerry and Thaine pick up their relationship where it left off five years ago, leaving Drew out in the cold and Jesse to pick up the pieces.

Jesse has had a thing for Drew for years so jumping in to help mend his broken heart is no hardship. All four men move on with life and love wondering if Thaine will ever remember.

I love the storyline, bull riding is such a dangerous sport and it makes me wonder how often this really happens.

I kept expecting Thaine to have an Ah-ha moment, but he never did. I wasn’t expecting him to get back together with Drew because Jerry really was the one that got away but I feel like there was no closure between Drew and Thaine.

Sex, holy hell there was a lot of sex. I get that there were two separate couples but wow, these guys were like Energizer Bunnies. I ended up skimming some of the scenes.

The overall story was good, the characters had good chemistry.

Someone is terrorizing both the customers and the performers. Could they be dealing with a hate crime? Someone has to protect the drag queens of Roanoke, so it’s Vinnie and Ethan to the rescue!

deanna review
Do you ever read so much romance that you need something else to break of the monotony. This book did that for me. The two MC’s are already together both romantically and professionally.

Vinnie Delarosa and Ethan Thorne are two undercover Federal Agents. They have just closed out a case involving a purse snatching dog and are ready for a little downtime together when they are thrown into a new case at a down-town Roanoke drag bar. Some of the queens have been threatened, and some of the patrons property has been damaged. Vinnie and Ethan are called in to solve the case before it escalates. Ethan is going undercover as a bartender while Vinnie is masquerading as a drag queen.

This book had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. Ethan’s internal dialogue was a riot, as were the exploits of the purse snatching Pekingese. Drag queen names like Orgazma, Boom-Boom Sanchez, Vee Gina, Sparkle Aplenty and Afternoon Delite had me giggling like a thirteen year old girl.

I loved the established relationship between Ethan and Vinnie, their trust for each other on and off the job really came through. Their witty banter and the way Ethan always cared for Vinnie was endearing.

I enjoyed the story as a whole, but I feel like I was left with some unanswered questions since it ended abruptly. Why was Muldoon at the bar? Who was he with? I thought Vinnie and Ethan were going to have to work together a little more before the mystery unraveled itself. All in all it was a solid read.

Not Just Passing Through by Jamie Dean: Release Day Review

April 27, 2016 by Denise

passing throughsynopsis

Socially awkward, closeted virgin Avery Malcolm passes his days and nights running his bigoted aunt’s motel in rural New Mexico. He dreams of getting away and hitting the road, but with one friend, a few acquaintances, and no real life to speak of outside his duties as front desk clerk, he doesn’t know if he’ll ever get a chance.

Fate sends hot drifter Chase Lancaster to the Red Ram Motel, riding in on his sexy black motorcycle. Within twenty-four hours, Avery’s life is turned upside down. Before long, even though Chase’s sexual interests seem to run exclusively toward women in bars, Avery finds himself falling for the beautiful biker with no permanent address. Chase is much more than his bad boy persona, so while it’s nice to have another friend, Avery doesn’t know how he’ll survive with his heart intact when Chase inevitably moves on.

deanna review
This a good slow burning, first love story.

Avery is the manager of his aunt’s motel when Chase rides in on his motorcycle to rent a room and turns Avery’s life upside down in the process.

It’s instant attraction for Avery, while Chase insists that he is straight. The two manage to build a friendship even with the one sided attraction.

As the weeks turn to months Avery realizes he is in love with Chase, while Chase is fighting his growing feelings for Avery. When Chase has to leave to help his sister, Avery isn’t sure if he will ever see his love again. Chase will have to come to terms with his feelings for Avery and decide whether they are worth pursuing and if he can be tied down to one place.

This was a slow burn, too slow in some spots. Since this story is told from Avery’s point of view we only see and hear what he does, which isn’t much. There isn’t a lot going on at the hotel and he doesn’t have much of a social life. If we had gotten a split POV with Chase’s internal dialogue I think it would have helped. He seemed to be the more conflicted character, and watching him work through his feelings would have been interesting.

Overall, the characters were interesting and the setting was well described.

Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

My secrets and sharp edges are built to keep people out.But when he wraps his warm body around mine—needy and trusting—something in me cracks open and unfurls. And the deeper Caleb sinks into my chest, the more I know I should push him away before he sees too much. Before it’s too late. ✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less

✨TEASER: LICKED by @charlienwrites releasing May 12th!#PreOrderNowmybook.to/lickitoneWhy you need to #ONECLICK this book…🍦Very Nerdy Meet Cute 🍦Low Angst🍦Slow Burn🍦Lingerie🍦First Times🍦Blowjobs in Beach Huts🍦Supportive & Nosy Friends🍦Sweetness & Spice🍦“Let Me Help You” 🍦MM RomanceLick It Like A Good BoyIt’s not often you meet gorgeous gothic men at wargaming tournaments. So, of course I tripped over my tongue instead of asking for his number. And despite my friends’ numerous offers to help find him online, we’re too busy opening Lick It!, our new ice cream shop, to spare time for my non-existent love life. But when Jonathan walks through the door on a sunny Friday afternoon, I can’t help but feel like it’s fate. He’s shy, sweet, and we immediately click. Jonathan doesn’t have much experience with relationships, so I’m determined to give him the attention he deserves, even if it means I’m pulled in two directions. With summer heating up and the shop getting hectic, spending time together is getting harder and harder. I don’t know how to balance the long hours and being a good boyfriend, but I know I have to figure it out. Because meeting Jonathan is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. ✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review this awesome release: bit.ly/lickedsignup#charlienovak #mmromance #kindleunlimited The Author Agency ...
