A Taste of Danger by Morgan Brice: Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt and Giveaway

September 11, 2024 by Denise

.                                        .
An unlikely rookie superhero and a dog shifter beer enthusiast team up to stop a nefarious supernatural plot.

Food reviewer Scott Dixon didn’t just lose his job—he started getting premonitions linked to random tastes, a new ability he’s not sure how to manage. When an interview lands him a position using his visions to help people and stop criminals, Scott finds himself chasing bootleggers who create beverages specially formulated to control people with psychic abilities. The trail leads to upstate New York, where he meets a sexy craft brewer who takes his breath away, but might be more than he appears, testing Scott’s trust.

Craft brewer and Belgian Malinois shifter Gage Merrick never fit in with his law enforcement family. He loves beer and spent years developing brews designed to taste good to different types of shifters. When he meets Scott, sparks fly. But Gage’s passion for paranormally optimized beverages raises Scott’s suspicions, threatening their chance at happiness.

Will Gage be the love of Scott’s life, or will their affair leave a bitter aftertaste?

A Taste for Danger is a feel-good paranormal super-powered hero MM romance romp filled with secret agents, found family, good beer, quirky humor, sexy shifters, soulful psychics, and supernatural skullduggery!

This book is part of the multi-author MM Romance SubPar Heroes series and is also linked to the Fox Hollow series.

“You were a food critic. Surely you had enemies.”

Scott thought for a moment. “There was a chef with a meat cleaver who didn’t like what I said about his béarnaise sauce. But since they all wanted positive reviews, they mostly sucked up to me. It was nice while it lasted.”

“We won’t be sending you into combat,” Ted promised. “Actually, your background as a food critic will be a perfect cover. If it helps, think of yourself as an investigator. You’ll have a reason to go to the restaurants and bars we think are operating as a front for the smugglers. Some of those groups are also bringing in similarly augmented, off-the-books paranormal pharmaceuticals, so you may end up bagging some big-wigs.”

Scott frowned. “How are they getting the supplies?”

“They’re a bunch of coyotes coming in from Canada,” Ted said.

“I thought coyotes brought undocumented people across the border,” Scott replied.

Ted shook his head. “Not those kind. The furry sort—shifters.”

“Real coyotes…running illegal drugs.” Scott’s world tilted again. “Isn’t that more a problem for a game warden?”

“You’ve got the perfect background as a food reviewer to get into the locations and ask lots of questions. Poke around. Talk to people. Keep your eyes open. The restaurants and bars they’re operating out of want good publicity. Half the time, the front of the house has no idea what’s going on in the back of the kitchen,” Ted assured him, ignoring his question.

If I go back to Rochester now, I’ll be sleeping on couches and sending more resumes. I’m overqualified for fast food and underqualified for haute cuisine. I don’t want to be broke. Scott slumped in surrender. “Okay. I’ll do it.”

Ted smiled. “You’ll be a natural. Your cover is as a food writer. We aren’t expecting you to go in guns blazing. You get cozy with them for your article. Keep your eyes and ears open. And when you know who’s who and what’s where, you phone it in, and our team swoops in like the wrath of God and shuts them down.”

Scott just stared at him. “And you don’t think they’ll figure I ratted them out and come after me?”

“We’ll extract you before the team goes in,” Ted assured him. “We take very good care of our assets.”

I’m an asset. A spy. And I didn’t even get a secret decoder ring. “Aren’t there a bunch of other things I need to know?” Scott tried to remember every espionage movie he had ever seen. “Like how to hotwire a car or make a bomb out of household materials or defuse a nuke with a paperclip?”

“Those skills are strictly on a need-to-know basis,” Ted replied. “If you’re ever assigned a case where it’s likely you will need to do any of those things, instruction will be provided.”

I wanted him to laugh and tell me that was completely nonsense. But no—it’s just that I’m too junior to know how to blow things up. He took a couple of deep breaths and tried to remind himself that real spies didn’t faint.

Dead Serious Case #3 Mr Bruce Reyes by Vawn Cassidy: RB, Exclusive Excerpt and Giveaway

August 14, 2023 by Denise

.                           .

Crawshank’s Guide to the Recently Departed, Book 3

Tristan Everett was finally getting used to the strangeness that was his life. Being able to see the dead and helping them solve their unfinished business and cross into the light wasn’t so bad after all, especially when he was accompanied by his best friend, dead drag queen Dusty Le Frey. His boyfriend, sexy Scotland Yard detective Danny Hayes, now knew the truth about Tristan’s “gift,” and they were about to move in together officially.

Life was good.

That is until Death—honest to god, Death (aka The Grim Reaper)—pitches up in Tristan’s kitchen with an unusual request: stop Dusty’s ghostly hookup Bruce from crossing into the light, which may result in dire consequences. i.e an accidental apocalypse.

Determined to do the exact opposite, and avoid potentially the end of the world, Tristan and Danny assemble their own ragtag gang of one prickly witch, one snarky psychic private investigator, one living drag queen with an affinity for feathers, and one dead one with an affinity for a deceased rugby player in tiny shorts. Together they must solve a forty-year old cold case, while juggling a dose of the flu, a broken leg, a supernatural storm, and an immortal death deity with the looks and temperament of a sexy but grouchy CEO.

Seriously… what could possibly go wrong?

“Did you tell Danny about it?”

“You mean, tell my boyfriend, the guy who’s only just learned ghosts are real, that I had a cup of tea in London’s most snobbish restaurant with Death, who told me the world was going to end if I didn’t steal some bones from the Forensic Anthropology department and stop your dead boyfriend from solving his unsolved business and crossing into the light?” I break off and start coughing again.

“Ah.”

“Exactly,” I sigh. “Still trying to figure out how to start that conversation.”

“Well, look on the bright side. Bruce’s body hasn’t been found yet, so we’ve still got some time.”

Suddenly, I sneeze violently, forcing my glasses to shoot off my face and land with a plop in my now stone-cold cup of tea. I pluck them out of the mug and grimace, holding onto one of the arms as it drips. Jacob Marley shifts and cracks one eye open before stretching up and licking the tea from the lenses, leaving smear marks over the glass.

For fuck’s sake.

Giving up, I set the mug on the bedside table along with my glasses and slide further down into the bed, displacing Jacob Marley, who gives a loud mewl of indignation and shifts to the end of the bed, then settles with his back to me as he lifts his tail and moons me. I swear to god he does it on purpose.”

“My head is killing me,” I mutter miserably. I turn on my side and try to ignore the heaviness in my chest as I grab another tissue and wipe my nose.

“You should get some sleep, sweetie,” Dusty says softly and spoons up behind me.

I let out a little hum of contentment as she starts to sing. Unlike when she’s trying to force me into doing something she wants and belts her way through chorus after chorus of West End hits, eighties chart-toppers, and sixties classics, this time she quietly croons the Mamas and the Papas’ version of Dream a Little Dream of Me to me.

Dusty’s comforting voice and the patter of the rain, mix with Jacob Marley’s rusty-old-tractor purr to wrap around me and I find myself slipping easily into sleep under her touch.

Contractually Yours: A Hot Bite story by Sarah Honey: New Release Review

July 4, 2023 by Denise

FROM EXCITING AUTHOR OF LGBTQIA ROMANCE SARAH HONEY

A Hot Bite story

Nate just signed up to take a werewolf lover. Hottest. Summer. Ever.

The Shiftercorp Companion Program— where willing humans can sign up to offer their services as a werewolf ‘ companion’ for the summer, and be generously compensated for their time and services.

Perth local Nathan Watson is young, single and loves sex, so it makes sense to apply to spend his summer as a shifter’ s lover. He’ s thrilled when he’ s accepted by Shiftercorp, but when the werewolf he chose as his partner is no longer available, a mysterious stranger steps up to claim his contract.

Nate is cautious, but agrees to at least meet the wolf in question— and when he does? Sign him up. Cooper Hudson is drop-dead gorgeous, compelling and irresistible, and Nate can’ t keep his hands off him. His only concern is that Cooper’ s obviously hiding something about who he is and what he does. Still, Nate’ s almost certain Cooper isn’ t an underworld boss.

Well, sixty-percent certain.

When Cooper Hudson saw Nate’ s profile, he wanted him. And while it probably wasn’ t strictly ethical to use his position to claim Nate as his companion, Cooper’ s looking forward to flying to Western Australia and spending time with this gorgeous boy. He expects a pleasant summer fling— no more, no less.

Then he meets Nate, and the chemistry between them is scorching. Cooper falls hard— and recognises Nate as his true mate. Now he just has to figure out how to tell him. Oh, and there’ s the small matter of what, exactly, Cooper does for a living.

But he’s sure it’ ll be fine.

Probably.

Load this one up on your Kindle for a summer day at the beach!

Kind of paranormal-ish in that there are werewolves and they are out of the proverbial closet living amongst humans. And there’s a company that is kind of like a pay to play dating site where humans offer themselves up as companions to be bid on. And it pays very well.

Nate is a regular guy wanting to make some cash having sex with a werewolf instead of working in the hot summer sun. Cooper sees his profile and has to have him. But Nate doesn’t know that Cooper pulled a couple of strings AND is the owner of the company.

Their first meeting is electric and it doesn’t stop. After not even two days Cooper realizes that Nate is his mate. Nate feels the pull too but doesn’t think it’s possible.

So yes, pretty much insta-love with the whole mate thing. And they had some seriously hot sex. They had some time outs to do fun things. Like eat. HA! And swim, sight see, etc.

My only real complaints were WAY too much use of “Baby” as an endearment. Gag. And I would have loved to read the background story of how werewolves were discovered and how they integrated with people. And their shifting. Cooper shifts but it isn’t a full shift. Is that by design in the book? Or a genetic mutation thing? I always have questions.

But yes, for a short book, it told a decent story with no angst. Read it in an afternoon while sipping a cold drink.

Love for the Reaper (The Elite Book 1) by Charlie Cochet: New Release Review

June 1, 2023 by Denise

.                                       .

Devlin “Dev” Espinosa lives in the shadows of the criminal underworld. As a Ferryman, his job is to safely transport “the dead” to their new lives, no questions asked. With no one to answer to, lots of cash, and access to The Anonymous–an exclusive club for the elite–Dev is loving life.

Until Remy Corbin gets into his car.

Remy is just a regular guy working a regular bartending job. At least, that’s what he thought before walking in on his boss taking someone out. Witnessing the assassination paints a target on Remy’s back, and when the bullets fly, he jumps into a stranger’s car.

Dev has no intention of getting involved in Remy’s problems, but something about the guy brings out protective instincts Dev didn’t know he had. Going against his better judgment, Dev vows to keep Remy alive.

Can wild nights fueled by danger and explosive passion lead to more? Or will the hitman on their tail cut their romance–and lives–short?

Love for the Reaper is a part of the multi-author series The Elite. Each book can be read as a standalone and in any order. What links these books together is The Anonymous, a club beneath the gritty city where only the elite are welcome.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited – All Regions

Books 1-9 in The Elite multi-author series

This book is part of a shared world, but they are all stand alones. Which totally works, but I would have liked to know more about this fictional city they live in. But not a big deal.

Being a novella, we jump right into the action. Very little backstory on the characters. But enough to get who they are and why they are in this place in life.

Almost immediately a murder is witnessed, the two main characters are shot at and go into hiding. Not really hiding, but an agreed upon safe zone for all of the bad guys. Seriously. Kinda silly, lots of fun.

Dev goes against everything he has been up until this point for a guy he just met. And Remy is just a regular guy caught up in a mess who falls in love with a criminal.

Could be an episode of a tv show.

Fun, fast, totally unrealistic but it sucks you in.

If anything screams afternoon beach read- it’s this!

.                              .

Together, they might stand a chance.
Divided the world might never survive.

Richard, chased by the memory of losing his entire team in Syria, agreed to help his younger brother Talon, in an attempt to forge bonds between them that had been broken when Talon had transformed.

Adam, terrified of the team that had given him a chance at life, finding out what he had done. Would it result not only in losing the family he had always wanted but never had, but the real risk of harm to those not expecting it, and knowing he was going to be forced to choose between the two?

Sawyer, torn between the real possibility that his ability was out of control, and terrified to admit it even to those who had always had his back, was secretly being drawn to both the warrior that might save the world, and the innocent that might have to sacrifice himself for it.

And the very real possibility that the evil they faced would defeat all three.

Too stupid to live? Wasn’t that what the kids said? Or was that just Finn? Adam snorted and pressed his face to the glass. It was going to rain. Hardly surprising in Florida. And even though it was hot and sticky outside, everything inside him chilled.

“Hi, I’m Finn.” Adam had been shy. Everyone else’s mom or dad had been standing at the bus stop with them that first day, but the two who had parents who didn’t give a fuck had naturally gravitated to each other. “You wanna sit next to me?”

And they had just about been inseparable for the next five and a bit years. Thanks to Tammy, Adam had already been reading when he started school, but he hated math. Finn was exactly the opposite. He struggled with words. Not the ones he heard but the ones he was supposed to read. Finn was clever. Far cleverer than Adam, but just because he didn’t understand other people’s words when they were written down, everyone thought he wasn’t.

Adam had quickly disabused Jamie Salmon of that idea in first grade. And any of the other idiots who thought they could pick on his friend. Jamie was named after a big pink fish, so who was he to talk? Adam was big for his age and had a sister who anyone only took on if they had a death wish. Finn had a brother but wished he didn’t. Adam wouldn’t have wanted a brother like Deke, either.

They’d been inseparable right up to that last year. Adam had told Finn he liked Mandy Jameson even though he was pretty sure she ate poisonous plants like Brussels Sprouts, and Finn had gone quiet and then confessed he liked Mandy’s older brother. The one in high school that sometimes dropped her off at school in the mornings. That had given Adam a lot to think about because, yeah, he was pretty sure he liked Mandy Jameson’s brother as well. And it had always been like that. That they could say anything to each other.

Until that morning. That morning when his world had ended because he’d woken up with a scar on his face and found out that the people who were supposed to love you never really had.

Except Finn. Adam knew beyond any doubt Finn would have stuck with him. Finn would have taken one look at his face and probably likened him to some weird superhero, or alien, or someone else in a book no one else would have ever heard of. And it wouldn’t have mattered. They’d have gotten on the bus and talked about pink fish and liking boys and how they were always going to be best friends. Forever.

But forever was a long time, and Adam didn’t think even Finn could forgive this one.

The screen door banged, and Adam turned around, surprised he hadn’t heard Todd’s truck only to come face to face with Sawyer. He ducked his head, but it was too late, and Sawyer swore, striding over and hooking his thumb under Adam’s chin and raising his face. His black eye would be more visible. Not that you couldn’t see it from space.

Instead of Sawyer getting angry, getting defensive, his expression gentled, as did his fingers. Adam missed the feel of them when they left his face. “What do you need me to do?”

Adam wished so fucking much he could tell him. “I’m handling it.” He didn’t look at Sawyer as he said it. He didn’t need to see the doubt or the disbelief, and he wished so fucking hard he could tell him. He turned away because he had to blink rapidly, but Sawyer had seen, and his warm fingers returned as his palm landed on Adam’s cheek. The one with the scar. Not that Sawyer would flinch because he had one of his own, and Adam closed his eyes on the world and leaned into the touch. He caught a hurried breath from Sawyer, then Sawyer’s thumb slid down his jaw until he was nearly touching Adam’s lip. What would that touch feel like? Adam slid his face a little more toward Sawyer.

He opened his eyes because he had to know and met Sawyer’s green ones and marveled for a second at how deep and wide they had gotten. And how much they seemed to draw him in. He took in the slight flush on Sawyer’s neck and the way his breathing seemed to have sped up. And the way Sawyer looked at him. Saw him. He didn’t see a scar. He didn’t see a failure. He didn’t see betrayal.

Adam knew he needed to step back. He couldn’t drag Sawyer into his mess. Fuck, but he didn’t want to. He wanted—

But the lips that touched his own sent all rational thought somewhere else, somewhere that didn’t hurt. Somewhere where bad decisions belonged to someone else. Somewhere he could be someone else.

Adam’s arms were around Sawyer before he knew what was happening, and he drew him closer. His lips were gentle on Adam’s, but Adam didn’t want gentle. He wanted fierce and possessive, not tentative and unsure. Sawyer moaned into his touch, and Adam explored with his tongue. He could feel Sawyer’s hardness through his jeans and rubbed their hips together. Sawyer groaned again and ground against him. His lips left Adam’s, but only to mouth the base of his neck, and Adam slid his hands down the back of Sawyer’s jeans, yanking him forward even more. Adam could feel the warmth start in his spine as his body responded. Fuck, how long had it been?

“Adam,” Sawyer gasped, a small whine leaving his throat, the vibration against the skin of Adam’s neck addictive. He wanted more. More touching, more kisses.

“Adam, come with me. Come to my place,” Sawyer whispered.

Reality.

Adam stilled so completely that Sawyer hesitated and looked up. “Adam?” When Adam couldn’t seem to form an answer, Sawyer tilted his head, confusion chasing away the passion in those lust-filled eyes.

“I can’t,” Adam choked out and took a step back. The hardest one he’d ever taken.

Sawyer’s arms dropped to his sides. “You can have your own room if—”

But Adam shook his head. “No, sorry. I was upset, and I took it out on you.”

“Adam, that wasn’t an angry kiss. I was two minutes from dragging you into bed until I remembered where we were.” And who you’re supposed to be with. The words weren’t spoken, but Adam heard them all the same.

“I’m sorry, that was bad. I didn’t mean to give you the impression that I wanted more. I just needed a distraction.” Adam wanted to flinch at the hurt that flashed across Sawyer’s face, scream. He didn’t mean it, but he couldn’t unsay it. He didn’t dare. “I guess you’re here for those things you left?”

Sawyer didn’t reply. He took one disbelieving look at Adam, then simply turned and left. Adam closed his eyes. He didn’t want to watch someone else leave him.

Because, in the end, that’s all they ever did, even if this time Adam had pushed them away.

Liar City: A Novel (Sugar & Vice Book 1) by Allie Therin: New Release Review

March 25, 2023 by Denise

.                               .

A murder has Seattle on edge, and it falls to a pacifist empath—and a notorious empath hunter—to find the killer before it’s too late

It’s the middle of the night when part-time police consultant and full-time empath Reece gets an anonymous call warning him that his detective sister needs his help. At an out-of-the-way Seattle marina, he discovers that three people have been butchered—including the author of the country’s strictest anti-empathy bill, which is just days from being passed into law.

Soon, Reece’s caller arrives: a shadowy government agent known as The Dead Man, who is rumored to deal exclusively in cases involving empathy. He immediately takes over the investigation, locking out both local PD and the FBI, but, strangely, keeps Reece by his side.

As the two track an ever-growing trail of violence and destruction across Seattle, Reece must navigate a scared and angry city, an irritating attraction to his mysterious agent companion, and a rising fear that perhaps empaths like him aren’t all flight and no fight after all…

“Readers will be yearning for more the minute they finish the final page.” —Library Journal, starred review, on Starcrossed

Sugar & Vice

Book #1: Liar City

Amazon

This author can world build like few others I’ve read before. Just fantastic world building. I felt a bit lost at the beginning, but soon got into it. It’s well worth the time invested.
It has lots of action, intrigue and mystery. The twists and turns in the plot are intricate, and keep the reader guessing.

There is definitely an undertone of how we treat “the other people” which is so relevant to the society we live in today.

Reese was hilarious to me (his rules about driving a car cracked me up), but also tore my heart out from all he had gone through as an empath. He and Grayson together were funny, but this isn’t really a romance, at least not at this point.

However the book worth jumping into this series and finding out what this world is all about, and seeing where these two take us. Also, I am going to jump back and grab the audiobook too, because the only thing that would have made it better is having Joel Leslie read it to me. 🙂

✨TEASER: CALLOUS SHOT by @authorbeccasteele releasing September 24th!#PreOrderNowmybook.to/callousshot Why you need to #ONECLICK this book…🖤M/M standalone🏒enemies to lovers🖤rival hockey teams🏒morally grey🖤college romance🏒hockey romance🖤crime boss son x lawyer's son🏒obsessed with each otherDaniel Hoyton has been a thorn in my side for as long as I can remember. We play for rival hockey teams. We attend rival universities. Our families are on opposite sides of the law. I hate him, with his irritatingly smug smile, his arrogance, and his inability to take anything seriously.I want to wipe that smile from his face with my fist.…Or my mouth.I can’t decide if I want to punch him or kiss him, and it’s beginning to be a problem. A problem with big consequences. Not only is he completely wrong for me, but his family and friends are under investigation…and my uncle is in charge of the operation. I know we’re going to crash and burn. But I can’t seem to stay away from the flames.✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review here: bit.ly/CALLOUSSHOTSIGNUP#beccasteele #hockeyromance #spicyromance The Author Agency ...

✨TEASER: ASYSTOLE by @jillian_wray_author releasing September 24th! #PreOrderNowa.co/d/0duS4TrN Why you need to #ONECLICK this book…🚁Friends to Lovers🩺Surgical Resident x Helicopter Pilot🚁Bi-Awakening🩺F*ck It🚁Workplace Romance🩺Cheating (not between MMCs)LOGANI excel at running from my problems and my past.Unfortunately, I’m also really good at running straight into trouble. While trying to get as far away as possible from the man who broke my heart, I ended up sharing an apartment with his fiancé’s best friend.I’m determined to keep Chase at arm’s length, but Chase is determined to get inside my skin. Who knew straight guys with long term girlfriends were so into platonic cuddling?Chase’s stressful days as a medical resident have me doting like an eager housewife—which is ridiculous…Until we cross a line, and I’m left wondering what’s crazier: Chase still thinking he’s straight, or me thinking this could end in anything other than heartbreak.CHASENinety-hour weeks as a general surgery resident leave me hollow and mentally fried, so when running into an old acquaintance offers me a break I desperately need, I jump at the opportunity. As the Life Flight helicopter pilot for Boston Memorial, I expected to see Logan from time to time. What I wasn’t expecting was to become his roommate so soon after reconnecting.Nor was I expecting my platonic feelings for him to turn into something… more.I blame it on my need for physical touch and the long-distance relationship I have with my girlfriend.Until a kiss with Logan at the stroke of a New Year’s midnight changes everything.I need Logan in ways I never imagined, but by the time I figure that out, it may be too late.Asystole is book one in the Boston Memorial series. It can be read as a complete standalone but does feature characters from—and contains light spoilers for—Avalanche (Part of the Ricochet Ridge series).✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up here bit.ly/ASYSTOLESIGNUP#jilliandwray #mmromance The Author Agency ...

Allegiant (The Firm Book 4) by Cora Rose and Lark Taylor. My review:Another winner for this series. Listen, you definitely have to suspend reality. But at the same time it seems so normal. Maybe because we don't see a lot of the "wet work" of The Firm. And these brothers are just so funny. They all have serious trauma from their father and they aren't the greatest at expressing emotions. But they love and protect fiercely. Even when they are threatening each other with daggers, torture and imminent death. Ahh fratricide. Must like one of the other books, Samson is tasked with killing someone they believe killed his best friend. But then he met him. Lust came first.Rowan is still grieving his best friend who was killed almost a year ago. He throws himself into work as a dancer and preparing for an upcoming show. But this handsome giant of a man helps him forget as well.Until, yanno, Samson figures out that Rowan didn't do it. And he has to convince his brothers of the same.Besides the regular cast of characters, we also meet Larry. Rowan's neighbor who he considers old and invalid and he kind of forces friendship on him. And helps him out around the house. The more we learn about Larry, the more interesting he is.Rowan also helps Samson come out of his shell a bit with dance. Something Samson loves but only does in secret. Never in front of anyone. Until Rowan. I was a bit perplexed why Rowan was able to forgive one person for something but not Samson. And He does grapple with that himself. But I appreciated that Rowan really stuck up for himself and wasn't going to just accept what happened. These two were so great together. Rowan defending Samson to Samson's brothers made me want to stand up and cheer. And Samson refusing to just go away after the big fight. He was fine in the shadows. He just needed to keep Rowan safe. Swoon. If you've read the others, you'll really enjoy this.PS: as someone who grew up going to dance classes who also had a some who went to dance classes for 10 years, I wish more research was done so those parts of the book were more accurate.PPS: THAT EPILOGUE!4 Pieces of Eye Candy ...
