Flying Solo by Susan Mac Nicol : Quick Review

February 3, 2016 by Denise

Flying Solo Ebook CoversynopsisFlight attendant Maxwell Lewis has spent years cultivating a bon vivant image only to find he finally wants something more—and that something more includes the never-does-repeats game designer Gibson Henry.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

Maxwell Lewis is proud of the life he’s made. Having turned tragedy into triumph, he’s now a beloved member of a Target Airlines cabin crew with more than his fair share of attention both in the air and on the ground. But lately he’s wanted something more than the occasional hook-up or sometime sex buddy—particularly after meeting game designer and passenger Gibson Henry.

Talented and driven, Gibson has built a company ready to be the next big thing in gaming. Devoted to his work, he takes onetime pleasures where he finds them and never does repeats…which is what he tells handsome, sexy Maxwell Lewis after a little mile-high flight attendance. But a chance encounter in a London club is about to change things forever. Two men, one who’s flown solo and another who’s only ever played alone, are about to find that at some point all games come to end, it’s time to bare your heart and try for love.

denise review

I’ll be the first to say that I love Susan Mac Nicol’s books. She is a smart lady, who dives into her research, and never ceases to torture her guys endlessly, before finally giving them their HEA. This being book 6 in the Men of London series, I had some idea what to expect.

I will say this was not my favorite of the series (not all of them can be, can they?). I think part of that was, I had a hard time connecting with Gibson from the outset. I didn’t feel the need for insta-love, but he was so far on the other end of the spectrum, it was challenging for me to want Maxwell, who had been through so much in his life, to end up with a man who didn’t appreciate the wonderful things about him. I wanted only the best for Maxwell, and my heart was not invested in Gibson being that person.

However, maybe all that says a lot about Sue’s writing. Because after a certain event happened, I saw the more vulnerable side of Gibson, and how Maxwell was able to be there to support Gibson during that challenging time. They moved from F buddies to a more balanced relationship, where both sides were able to contribute equally in the equation.

There was an event late in the book that did make me question my love for Maxwell, and want Gibson to not let it go so easily-but I realized that everyone in life makes mistakes, and sometimes, as humans that love another, we forgive those mistakes, whether or not everyone agrees with it.

All in all, a solid story, that did give me some grief to deal with. 3.75 pieces of eye candy.

THIRDS Character Spotlight: Seb and Hudson, A TCO Exclusive

February 3, 2016 by Denise

catch a tigerWe are so excited here at Two Chicks Obsessed! All week, in honor of Catch a Tiger by the Tail by Charlie Cochet, releasing Friday February 5th, we will have character spotlights for your. We have asked Dex and Sloane, Cael and Ash, Seb and Hudson, Letty and Rosa, and of course Calvin and Ethan Hobbs, five questions, and you are going to love their answers. So, sit back, grab a dainty mug of tea, and enjoy today’s Q&A with Seb and Hudson.

Seb & Hudson

TCO: What’s your guilty pleasure?

Seb: Photography. A lot of people are surprised by that. They think because I’m a tiger Therian, and a Defense agent that I don’t have an eye for that sort of thing, but I do. I love taking pictures of life’s moments. Of the beauty around us.

Hudson: He really is very talented. As for me…. You won’t discuss this with anyone, correct? It’s um, well, you see…

Seb: Celebrity gossip magazines.

Hudson: Thank you, Sebastian. I was getting to it.

Seb: You should have seen him and my mom when they got together. It was adorable. The way they’d huddle over a gossip magazine with cups of tea.

Hudson: Next question, please.

TCO: Pick your poison (beverage of choice)

Seb: I’m content with just beer. Nothing fancy.

Illustration of man with black hair, blue eyes, and blue sweater with a tatoo on the neck and shield logo on bottom left.

Hudson: I much prefer a nice cup of tea or coffee to alcohol, but on occasion I will indulge in a cocktail or two.

Seb: He’s as bad as Dex.

Hudson: What are you saying?

Seb: That you’re not very good at holding your liquor.

Hudson: Preposterous! I do perfectly all right, thank you very much.

Seb: You do, huh? Should we discuss the time you had a couple of shots of Goldschlager and I had to chase you through Times Square as you sang songs from Rocky Horror Picture Show because you wanted everyone to know what a wonderful and naughty musical it was.

Hudson: I recall no such evening.

Seb: How very convenient.

Hudson: Say “naughty” again.

Seb: Shut it, mister.

TCO: Workout of choice

Hudson: I don’t work out as much or as often as my teammates, but then the requirements for our positions are vastly different. I work out once a day in Sparta. When I need to blow off some steam, I do some boxing.

Seb: He’s got a mean right hook.Sebastian Hobbs

Hudson: Which you taught me.

Seb: I did. Don’t let that sweet, handsome face fool you. Underneath his calm, posh exterior lies the ferocity of a wildcat.

Hudson: Bollocks.

Seb: I love it when you get all flustered and curse.

Hudson: Next question if you don’t mind.

TCO: Pick a weapon-only one

Hudson: I detest weapons. My weapon is my intellect. I’m a doctor. Of course, those who end up on my table are beyond my help, but my skills come in helping them find justice. In helping those who cared about them find closure. When I can, I volunteer with the THIRDS outreach program which means lending a hand and providing care for those without the means to get it elsewhere.

Seb: He’s really something isn’t he?

Hudson: Yes, well, it’s your turn I believe.

Seb: Always so modest. For me, it’s whatever’s available. I don’t like to rely on solely one skill. That way there’s less of a chance for you to get caught off guard.

THIRDS Character Spotlight: Cael and Ash, A TCO Exclusive

February 2, 2016 by Denise

We are so excited here at Two Chicks Obsessed! So, sit back, grab a cup mug of hot cocoa, and enjoy today’s Q&A with Ash Keeler and Cael Maddock.

Cael & Ash

TCO: What’s your guilty pleasure?

Cael: Cooking shows. I get so sucked into them. I’ve always enjoyed cooking, but these shows are just so much fun. Sometimes it gets really intense. I’m not a big sports guy, but I imagine what I feel while watching some of these shows is what people like when watching a sports game. I have been known to yell at the screen.

Ash: I don’t feel guilty about anything. If I want to do it, I do.

Illustration of two young men, one with dark brown hair and one with light brown hair in uniforms with logos in the back and on uniform sleeve.

Cael: What about baking?

Ash: Thanks for outing me, sweetheart.

Cael: Um, I hate to break it to you, but everyone knows you bake.

Ash: When you say everyone….

Cael: I mean everyone. Even Jonah from accounting knows you bake.

Ash: How?!

Cael: Um, you baked pies for Thanksgiving remember? My brother was there, and we both know he’s the worst gossip ever. You outed yourself.

Ash: Seems to be a habit of mine as of late.

Cael: You’re so cute.

Ash: Thanks. Yeah, I bake. Happy now? Move onto the next damn question.

TCO: Pick your poison (beverage of choice)

Cael: I’m not really a big alcohol drinker, though I can hold my liquor way better than my brother. My drink of choice is probably hot chocolate. Sugary drinks aren’t too good for me either. Not just health-wise, but they make me kind of hyper.

Ash: kind of? Shall we discuss the Mochaccino incident?

Cael: That wasn’t my fault. I thought it was my hot chocolate. I didn’t know it was Dex’s bucket of triple heart palpitation espresso. I could hear color!

Ash: My poison of choice is whatever I’m in the mood for at the time. Don’t care. Except Guinness. It’s like drinking tar. Oh, and fruity shit. Alcopops and that nonsense. Cocktails with pieces of fruit. If I want fruit, I’ll have a damn apple. Don’t stick that shit in my drink.

TCO: Sinful snack

Cael: Cookies! I love cookies. Doesn’t matter what kind. I love baking them, decorating them, and eating them. So good.

Ash: Sweet stuff. Pies, cake, that sort of thing. I don’t eat it all that often, but I enjoy it. Baking is therapeutic for me, so I tend to bake stuff, maybe keep one thing for myself, and give the rest to Cael. He usually gives it to his brother, or takes it into the office. If I ever need to get rid of anything I baked, it just needs to find a way into Dex’s hands. The guy’s like a human vacuum cleaner when it comes to food. Don’t know where the hell it all goes. Probably to his head.

TCO: Workout of choice

Cael: Running. I love running. I’ll do the treadmill, but I love running outdoors. The wind in my face, music in my ears, and nothing but me and the great outdoors. It’s so freeing.

Ash: Anything where I get to inflict pain on some jackass. There’s always some rookie agent at work who thinks he can take me down, or someone who wants to prove how hard they are. I toy with them a bit before showing them how stupid they were for getting into the ring with me. Close quarter combat is my preference.

TCO: Pick a weapon-only one

Cael: I don’t like weapons. At least not ones that shoot. I prefer using my skills as a recon agent. My expertise is technology, so that’s what I prefer to fight with. Sometimes the best solution is one that doesn’t involve a body count.

Ash: Where’s the fun in that?

Cael: Very funny.

Ash: You’re so cute when you pout like that. I’m kidding. You’re right.

Cael: Of course I’m right. I’m always right.

Ash: Well…. For the sake of not sleeping alone tonight, let’s go with yes. Yes, you’re always right, sweetheart.

Cael: Thank you. I love how we see eye to eye.AshKeeler300

Ash: More like eye to top of head, on account of you being so adorably small.

Cael: It’s like you want to sleep on your own tonight.

Ash: Sorry. Right. My weapon of choice is my body.

Cael: Ooh, that sounds naughty.

Ash: That’s not what I meant, but hold onto that thought for later. I meant weapons are unreliable. If you’ve honed your skills as a fighter, you can achieve great things. Taking down an opponent with my technique, is far more rewarding than just shooting at them. I like to think of myself as more of a warrior than anything else.

synopsis

Nightclub owner Marcus Feldman never met a man he didn’t love, at least for the night. Although his best friends have all found love, Marcus shuns their advice to commit to one man and settle down. His past has taught him monogamy and marriage is for fools, and Marcus is anything but a fool.

Tyler Reiss’s dream of dancing professionally is unexpectedly cut short and replaced by a different kind of love. He trades in his ballet slippers for go go boots, and spends his nights dancing at the hottest gay club in the city. Flirting with the customers for tips is easy, but resisting the dark and sexy Marcus is becoming harder to do with each passing day.

Unforeseen circumstances bring Marcus and Tyler closer and though they give in to their mutual passion, both still struggle to guard their hearts. When crises threaten, Tyler and Marcus find their strength in each other rather than falling apart. Tyler must choose to either run, or stay and fight for the life he wants, while Marcus realizes that love doesn’t mean losing himself and opens his heart, making him a better man in the end.

denise review

This was a great way to round out the Breakfast Club series by Felice Stevens. The third book in the series-possibly the last one-wrapped up Marcus’ story, the ultimate playboy, who never had plans to settle down, and didn’t understand his best friends’ obsession with finding love.

Second to None was truly a story shared by these two men, Marcus and Tyler. With all that Tyler had deal with over the last few years, he was the one evading Marcus, ironic since Marcus was known to only bed a man once. Tyler stuck to his personal values and would not give in to Marcus, no matter what.

There were a few points at the beginning that I wasn’t sure if I would actually like Marcus, not merely because he was arrogant. A few times, I had concerns that he was crossing the line with an employee who had said no multiple times. However, all that changed when Marcus was willing to open his home, without question to Tyler and his niece, when Tyler was injured. There was no hint of that man who had toed that line, and my concerns were cleared up.

Probably my favorite part of this book was the reality that came with it, something that Felice puts into all her books. Real life happens, and its how we deal with it that matters, and few authors do that as well as Felice. Tyler had to give up his dream of dancing on Broadway, and he was okay with that, merely because he knew he had to deal with suddenly having a child that had not ever been part of his plan. There was no magic fix for this, and as always happens with tragedy, you move forward the best way you can.

Marcus, not understanding what love truly was, had to slowly find his way to his own realizations. Sometimes we don’t get a second chance to make things right, and so you must move forward, and hope that those people who have supported you along the way will still be there for you.

As always with Felice’s books, you will have some tears along the way, and some happy moments, more of that latter, thank goodness! 4.5 pieces of eye candy.

deanna review

This is not the first book I have read by Felice Stevens, she is one of my auto-buy authors. I don’t even need to read the description to know I’m going to love it. Second to None may have just become my new favorite!

I love the story of a self-proclaimed man-whore finding the one man that knocks him on his ass and makes him work for it!

This is the story of nightclub owner Marcus Feldman who enjoys the single life, maybe a little too much. New man every night, never repeating with a partner. Then he hires Tyler Reiss to dance at his club, Sparks. Tyler Reiss isn’t interested in being a notch in anyone’s belt. He is too busy trying to care for his 4 year old niece to give in to any of advances Marcus makes. When circumstances force them to spend more time together they both learn that appearances may be deceiving. Both men are afraid of being hurt and if they can lay the fear aside they could have something spectacular.

I loved this book. I had previously read the other two books in the series, and this was is just as good. I love seeing the past characters in the new story, you get to see where they are heading as well. I can’t wait to see what Felice has in store for us in the future!!!

Five pieces of eye candy.

5-pieces-eye-candy3excerpt

“This wasn’t a permanent arrangement; you knew that.” Tyler leaned against the wall. “I can’t impose on you any longer. I’m sure you want your bedroom and your life back.”

“I didn’t mind it last night.” He walked over to Tyler and placed a hand on his neck, stroking him. This he could do. He had no qualms about seducing Tyler to stay with him. The troubling reason why he wanted him there so badly, Marcus pushed to the side for now. Instead, he pulled Tyler close, settling their hips in line, and his cock thickened in his pants. “I’d tell you if I did. Please, come with me to brunch, and we can talk.”

Doubt clouded Tyler’s eyes. “I don’t belong there. Those are your friends, the people you’re closest with.”

“I had my dick inside you twice last night, Tyler. How much closer could we get?”

It took Marcus many minutes of deep, persuasive kisses to rid Tyler of his confusion. When he pulled away though, the ground under his feet reeled, and Marcus needed a moment to compose himself.

They remained standing close; Tyler’s hands rested on his shoulders while he clasped Tyler around his hips. He nuzzled Tyler’s ear, then pleaded with him.

“Come on; you have to help me out here. They’re all coupled up, and the last thing I want is to listen to them be all disgustingly loving and happy.”

An amused glint lit Taylor’s eyes. “And you hate that, huh?”

“Bet that sweet ass of yours I do.” He gave Tyler’s ass a squeeze for effect, and the light in Tyler’s eyes smoldered.

“If you want me to come, you’d better get your hands off my ass.”

Marcus’s lips curved up in a grin as he popped open the button of Tyler’s jeans and drew them down.

“I definitely want you to come; in every way possible,” he said, and sank to his knees, uncaring of how late he might be to meet Zach and Julian.

Felice Stevens has always been a romantic at heart. While life is tough, she believes there is a happy ending for everyone. She started reading traditional historical romances as a teenager, then life and law school got in the way. It wasn’t until she picked up a copy of Bertrice Small and became swept away to Queen Elizabeth’s court that her interest in romance novels was renewed.

But somewhere along the way, her reading shifted to stories of men falling in love. Once she picked up her first gay romance, she became so enamored of the character-driven stories and the overwhelming emotion there was no turning back.

Felice lives in New York City with her husband and two children. Her day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. Although she practices law, she daydreams of a time when she can sit by a beach and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be some angst along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

THIRDS Character Spotlights: Dex and Sloane, A TCO Exclusive

February 1, 2016 by Denise

catch a tigerWe are so excited here at Two Chicks Obsessed! So, sit back, grab a HUGE mug of coffee, and enjoy today’s Q&A with Dex and Sloane.

Dex & Sloane

TCO: What’s your guilty pleasure?

Dex: I don’t really have any guilty pleasures because when I want something, I just have at it. I mean, really. Life’s too short.

Illustration of two young men, one with dark brown hair and one with light brown hair in uniforms with logos in the back and on uniform sleeve.

Sloane: Yeah, he has at it, and then I’m the bad guy for making him work it off.

Dex: But I love it when you make me sweat, babe.

Sloane: I don’t think this is that kind of interview.

Dex: Sloane’s guilty pleasure is empanadas. You should see him. It’s like catnip.

Sloane: That is true. They are so good.

Dex: You have a little, a bit of um, drool on the corner of your mouth.

Sloane: Shut up. I do not.

Dex: You’re right. My bad.

TCO: Pick your poison (beverage of choice)

Dex: Coffee. All. The. Coffee. If it’s alcohol, anything. Sadly, I’m not too big on the hard stuff.

Sloane: Which means pretty much all alcohol. He’s a lightweight.

illustration of a young man with dirty blond hair, blue eyes, a dark jacket and blue shirt with dog tag chain. Bottom left graphics of police shield with image of justice statue, white lettering saying THIRDS, City of New York Division

Dex: Babe, seriously. How can you do me like that? Speaking of do me—

Sloane: Stop. Just… behave yourself.

Dex: Ha! It’s like you don’t know me.

Sloane: I’m not really into anything fancy. I’m usually good with a beer.

TCO: Sinful snack

Dex: Anything with cheese. I love cheese. Oh, and gummy bears. But not with cheese. That’s just gross. Isn’t it? Hm, yeah, I think that would be gross. Unless it was a gummy bear made of cheese! Oh, but then it wouldn’t be called gummy would it?

Sloane: You had another triple shot of espresso in your coffee didn’t you? I’m pretty sure I said one shot.

Dex: One shot. Pardon me while I laugh haughtily. For those who couldn’t hear me, I just laughed haughtily.

Sloane: This is every day.

Dex: And you love it.

Sloane: I do.

TCO: Workout of choice

Dex: Sexy-times.

Sloane: That’s not what the question meant.

Dex: Well it should be. I mean what better work out is there? All your muscles get worked out, and—

Sloane: Okay, we should move onto the next question. Oh, and my answer is weights.

Dex: Like my weight. You’re very good at lifting my weight.

Sloane: I can’t take you anywhere.

TCO: Pick a weapon-only one

Dex: My charm. It’s… disarming. See what I did there, babe?sloane
Sloane: Unfortunately. For me, I’m going to say when I’m in my Therian form, my claws.

Dex: You’re wrong.
Sloane: Am I now?
Dex: Yep. Your weapon is your sexiness.
Sloane: Aw. You want something don’t you?
Dex: Can we stop by the bakery on the way home? They have new donuts.
Sloane: Why are you asking me? You know even if I say no, that you’ve had far too much sugar today, you’ll just make that face, and see! There it is. That face, and the lip thing. Fine. Let’s go get your donuts.
Dex: Woohoo!

Shadows Never Lie (Shadow Duet Book 1) by Lark TaylorMy review:Ok, going into this knowing that there is a book 2.....And I just have to start by saying I really appreciated that they are identical twins who don't get along. So often they are BFF and twin telepathy and all that. And it does happen. But not always.I have to admit I was sucked in from the start. Especially since the first chapter was present day and then chapter two starts the back story. Just from chapter 1 I wasn't expecting their younger years to be as they were. And I really wanted to hate Dominick. But once more information about his life came to light AND how he started treating Ryan, I had a soft spot for him. Max (Ryan's twin) on the other hand, can go scratch. It will take a lot for him to redeem himself in book 2 if that even happens.I kind of saw the cliffhanger coming. I still wasn't prepared. Oh my heart just broke. And I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! Good thing book 2 comes out in 2 weeks...4 pieces of eye candy ... See MoreSee Less

Everything I secretly want. But then, Dominic suddenly sees me and issues an offer I can’t refuse. A challenge, actually. One he never expects me to follow through on.With anyone else, I wouldn’t have considered it. But I’ll be damned before I let Dominic get the better of me.It has me sinking to my knees. Literally.A decision that changes everything.Dominic pulls me out of the shadows, and I never want to go back. But it’s not the shadows I need to be afraid of.No, it’s the path that leads somewhere far darker than I could ever have imagined. Avalanche (Ricochet Ridge) by Jillian Wray My reviewI really liked these two characters and how they aren't exactly what you expected.First, yes they are step brothers. But they are 4 years apart AND Stone left when he was 18. You can extrapolate that there wasn't even a crush between these two guys until this book. Hero worship, yes. Romantic crush, nah.Stone, kind of a hot shot on the mountain because he is part of the blasting crew who set charges to trigger avalanches when no one is on the mountain. He is obviously good looking and popular, but the outside doesn't necessarily match the inside. And Hanlon, babied his whole life because he has a mild case of cerebral palsy, but he also grew into a independent college senior who has a gym body, is confident, out and proud. The quiet kid grew into a confident adult and the confident kid turned into a quiet adult. There was animosity between the step brothers for different reasons. But once they pushed past that and they started feeling things, it got interesting.Again, role reversal of the stereotypical characters. And that made it so fun.It sucked that they basically had to stay in the closet. Because of family and because of work. But we all know that doesn't last forever. And I totally understand their parents feeling the way they do. But like good parents, they found acceptance in their hearts. The CP representation was done really well. Showed that there are different levels of CP and even when it isn't overtly obvious, there's still a lot that a person has to deal with.AND I learned more about avalanches.4 pieces of eye candy ...
