I have always been a romantic at heart. I believe that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending just around the corner. I started reading traditional historical romances when I was a teenager, then life and law school got in the way. It wasn’t until I picked up a copy of Bertrice Small and became swept away to Queen Elizabeth’s court that my interest in romance novels became renewed.
But somewhere along the way, my tastes shifted. While I still enjoys a juicy Historical romance, I began experimenting with newer, more cutting edge genres and discovered the world of Male/Male romance. Once I picked up her first, I became so enamored of the authors, the character-driven stories and the overwhelming emotion of the books, I knew I wanted to write my own.
I live in New York City with my husband and two children and hopefully soon a cat of my own. My day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. I practice law but daydream of a time when I can sit by a beach somewhere and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be angst along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

Release Day Review and Author Interview: Godsend by Sloan Johnson

February 5, 2015 by Denise

Synopsis:

You can’t choose who you fall in love with. Despite knowing from a young age that he was gay, Scott Murphy couldn’t imagine life without Shelly. He threw away the labels and had eleven amazing years with her, but now, he feels even more lost trying to figure out how to move on after Shelly’s death. After nearly a year of watching Scott fade away, Shelly’s father forces him to start living again.

As much as Chris loathes the idea of attending a bereavement group week after week, it’s one of the only places he can go in this town, other than the bar, to not feel so alone. When there’s nothing to distract him or dull his senses, he spends too much time obsessing over how he should have been able to help his sister. When Scott shows up at his group session, Chris decides that maybe some good can come out of his sister’s death.

There’s no denying that Chris is the first man to catch Scott’s attention in a long time, but how can he move on when just thinking of Shelly sends him to his dark place?

The road to recovery won’t be an easy one, but Chris is determined to help Scott see that life is still worth living. But before Scott can allow himself to admit what he feels for Chris, he knows he has to reveal the full truth about Shelly’s death.

Author Interview:
Today at Two Chicks Obsessed, we are blessed with the
presence of someone I adore in person, as well as an author (although I haven’t
read any of her m/f books yet…don’t tell her!!!). Sloan Johnson is here to
answer five good questions about her new book Godsend.
TCO: A happy beautiful good morning to you, Sloan! Welcome
to Two Chicks Obsessed, we are delighted you came over to answer some burning
questions.  Thank you for taking a few
minutes out of your crazy week to interview.
SJ: Thanks for having me this morning! I’m not so sure about
beautiful, though. I mean, the sun’s shining, but I’m pretty sure it’s cold
enough to freeze the nuts off a bridge today!
1    TCO: **snort laugh** Okay, question number 1…I won’t give anything away
on this, I will let you dance around it all you want. But where did you get the
idea for such a difficult, and controversial subject to start this book? Was
there a specific thing that inspired you to write it?
SJ: There are times I asked myself that very question.
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m not at all in control of my
characters. They invade my head and I have to tell their stories. I will say
that I love writing about topics that force me to open my mind to new topics.
In the case of Scott and Chris, I think it’s a topic that a lot of people look
at and have an instant reaction, but when you stop and really think about both
sides of the situation, you may change your mind. That’s not my hope with this
book, at all, because I respect everyone’s right to their own opinions, but I
do hope that people will consider that there’s more than it seems on the
surface.
2
TCO: What kind of reactions were you expecting when you
wrote this book, or were considering writing this book? And have those
reactions been what you thought or different?
SJ: I’ll admit, I was terrified by the time I sent out the
first advance copies of the book. It’s not a topic that is light and fluffy,
and it’s not one everyone can accept or enjoy reading. Luckily, not a single
person has torn me apart for how I handled either of the topics (because there
is a secondary that I think could have gone either way). I have, however, been
overwhelmed by messages from people who thought it was a beautifully painful
story.
3
TCO:  Did you
have a goal (if so, what was it) in writing a story with such a controversial
topic?
SJ: The only “goal” I had was telling the story, and doing
it in a way that was respectful to those families who have lived through this
pain. More than once, I stopped writing because I wasn’t certain I was being
accurate in my portrayal of the situation or the process.
4
TCO: So, what are the chances that we will see a
sequel, short story, bonus scene **bats eyes**…heck even a two sentence conversation again
between Chris and Scott?
SJ: I hate to say never, because that’s a sure way for them
to start talking to me again, but I don’t think there’s more story for Scott
and Chris. They’re happy where they are and it’s time to let them move on in
life. I will, however, say that I have a few things up my sleeve for bonus
scenes that’ll pop up from time to time!
5
TCO: Last question…did you UGLY cry when you wrote IT?
Be honest!
SJ: Yes, yes, OMG yes!!! I had to take four smoke breaks
(yes, it’s an evil habit, I know) during the prologue because I was crying so hard
I couldn’t see the screen. And there were a few other times where tears flowed
down my cheeks, but nothing was as bad as those first few thousand words!
Thank you Sloan, so much for answering our five good
questions about Godsend!!!
Everyone, I cannot stress enough, you NEED to get this book.
What a story about love, loss, grief and recovery. (And yes, I ugly cried when
I read it…I might have called the lovely Ms. Johnson a few names via im…just
saying…)

Denise’s Review:

I was blessed to be able to read this amazing book ahead of its release, getting the chance to real soak into all the emotion that this book draws out of the reader.

I will not tell you that you won’t need tissues, you will…right from the prologue. You will likely need them later on as well. I will also not tell you that this book isn’t going to be a tough read, it is. However, what I will tell you is that you get such an in depth look into truly recovering and coming out the other side stronger from crippling grief, and finding a second chance at true love, that it makes this intense read so very worth every second.

Scott and Chris meet months after Scott’s wife Shelly died, after his father in law refuses to let him continue to wallow in his grief and makes him attend a group meeting focusing on recovering from such losses. As they begin to build a friendship, then a relationship, you can see all the real life challenges that this type of transition brings out. Guilt, remorse, backsliding into the all consuming grief cloud, all come into play here. Scott and Chris are both dealing with a loss, but Scott’s loss is compounded with the secret of how his wife died.

Scott is a stubborn man, expecting that he will never get over the loss of his wife, who he fell in love with despite always believing himself to be gay-an interesting switch up of the trope “gay for you”. He loved her as a best friend, and fell in love with her along the way. As he and Chris become closer, beginning a relationship, he finds that the guilt over finding love again that he expected isn’t there, believing that his wife Shelly would want him happy, but still struggling with the intense lows that come with dealing with such a devastating loss. Meanwhile, Chris is patient and loving, understanding how much Scott loved Shelly, always acknowledging that, and knowing that each day may bring new challenges, but they could face them together.

If you are looking for a light read, well, I’ll say you get some funny one liners in here, but you won’t find this to be a light read by any means. However, the love that slowly grows for these two men is such a beautiful winding course that it is worth all the tissues. Getting to see Shelly’s perspective is unique, and touching. And in the end, gaining some awareness of a growing issue in this country (you’ll see when you read the prologue) all combine to make this worth every minute of your time to read.

I can’t say strongly enough for you to pick this book up, settle in with a box of tissues, a cup of tea, snuggle into your reading nook, because you will be reading this from beginning to end, and loving every hard fought moment of it.

My final determination on this book is a strong five pieces of eye candy. So well done, and when you can hit my emotions as hard as this book did, you have won me over, Ms. Johnson (not that she had not already!!!).

Book reviews: Angel of Darkness and New Years Dream by Tyler May

February 2, 2015 by Morgan

Blurb for Angel of Darkness:

“Sleep, my boy, our time is coming soon.”

As a boy, Christian Bowman was obsessed with vampires and the paranormal. After a tragic event in his life, he found solace in reading and dreaming of the dark and mysterious tales.
Now twenty-one, his fantasy becomes a reality when he meets Zander―a blind vampire. Christian now has the chance to live the fantasy that up until now, he has only been able to dream about. Will his dream turn into a nightmare when he sees just how dark and dangerous a real vampire’s world can be?
Christian is in love with his Angel of Darkness. But is their love strong enough to withstand obstacles that come with loving a vampire? And more importantly, is there a happily-ever-after in a vampire’s world?
A vampire and a soul that never died; Darkness stole their past, but can his light save their future? M/M paranormal erotic romance. Not suitable for readers under 18, due to language and explicit sexual situations.

Morgan’s Review:

I want to start off by saying; I was very impressed with
this story.  I have read a lot of paranormal
stories and this has clearly become one of my favorites. Tyler May has created
a fascinating world. The attraction between Christian and Zander was explosive
and I fell in love with these two right away. The love and loyalty Zander has
for Christian is so intense. I was drawn into this story right away and
finished it in one sitting. Mystery, suspense, and even a little action,
Christian and Zander’s story will keep you on your toes and have you looking
forward to what’s next. This will be a definite reread for me and I am so
excited about the next installment. If you haven’t done so, make sure you check
out this series. Totally worth it..

Final determination is 5 pieces of eye candy.

Blurb for New Year’s Dream:
One night. One wish…..darkness disappears.
If you could have one wish, what would it be?
Christian thinks he has it all.
Billy knows what he is missing.
And Zander only wants one thing.
Will their dreams come true?
New Year’s is a time for reflection, change, and resolution….that is, if you’re human. In a vampire’s world, New Year’s is a time of birth. Once a year, vampires celebrate their existence, and it’s going to be one hell of a party.
With Christmas over, Christian prepares to celebrate with Zander for their first New Year together. Little does he know that Zander, with Billy’s help, has other plans.
The countdown has begun.
New Year’s dream is the second installment (novella) of Angel of Darkness.

18+ for language and sexual content. New Year’s Dream is the continuation of Christian and Zander’s story. It works better to have read Angel of Darkness first.
Morgan’s Review
New Year’s Dream is another fantastic addition to the
paranormal world Tyler May as created. This time we get to view things through
the eyes of Zander and Billy. We also get to hang out a little more with some
of the characters from Angel of Darkness.

New Year’s Eve is approaching and the Vampires consider this
a very special night, A Birthday for them, so to speak. It is also considered
by others to be a night that can bring out different types of powers in humans
and paranormal alike. You just have to be willing to use it. The downside is  it’s only for a short amount of time.

Be ready for a sweet read where we can revisit the
heartwarming and passionate relationship between Christian and Zander. I also
fell a little more in love with Billy. He may seem so hard on the outside but
he has a really big heart and he is starting to prove it. Wonderful little read
that will have you psyched up for the next installment.

Final determination is 5 pieces of eye candy.

Since Tyler is a LBGT author, she has three hopes when a reader picks up her book(s): She hopes that her books will teach tolerance and equality.  She hopes to convey the truth behind the infamous saying, “love is love.” She hopes that the book is more than a story―that’s it a journey with an important message.  Tyler’s favorite quote and something she always has tucked in the back of her mind as she writes her fictions: “Everything you can imagine is real.”―Picasso.

Jessie G. Bio

FAR Jessie G Bio PhotoLike many readers, the dream of being a writer has been with me a long time. After three decades of trying, I’d begun to doubt. Thanks to social media, I followed my favorite authors hoping to glean some words of wisdom as I pounded out half-formed ideas with alarming regularity. Two repetitive themes emerged: To be a great writer you must read a lot and your butt must be in the chair every day like it’s a job. The more you write, the easier it will be to write and the better you will be at writing. I took that advice to heart and write every day. With two published books and counting, it’s been amazing to have made this dream my reality.

I am a firm believer in marriage equality, love at first sight, power dynamics and happily ever after. I’m a lover of strong secondary characters and series filled with families, biological or chosen. All are themes you’ll find throughout my books.

From Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy:

Comment below on this beautiful cover, and we will chose two winners to receive a copy of the book on release day!!!!

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s life. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.
When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.
Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?
Now, Sloan is a tattooed mom with a mohawk and two kids. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself with a good book and forget she has somewhere to be.

Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
Rebound Control by Jodi OliverMy review! Enthusiastic 5 pieces of eye candy!!!This is a very rare 5 POEC for me. I could probably pick it apart to bring it to 4.5 but I'm not going to. I have also never identified with a male pro hockey player in my life until I started reading this book. This is book 5, but I haven't read the previous 4. This stands alone really well.Elliott is the goalie for a pro hockey team in Chicago. His twin brother is also on the team. And as is with a lot of twins, they are almost opposites. And now that his twin is married, Elliott is feeling more than a little left out. What is obvious to the reader (or at least to me) is that he has a pretty heavy case of ADHD. Which also makes him feel his feelings VERY strongly. Elliott doesn't know this and just thinks he is different and weird. All of the fun things kids in school used to call him. When he meets Hunter- oh those feelings. And then he runs into Hunter (sort of). More feelings. Then he goes to see him- FEELINGS.The person who doesn't want feelings is Hunter. TOO BAD. Feel them! lolHunter, the full time firefighter and former Navy SEAL who lives with his uncle after his husband died in a house fire. He does not want love to then lost it again. We all know how that goes.Hunter and Elliott are sooooooo perfect together. For a guy who didn't want love again, he is the most loving and attentive guy to Elliott. Like swoony without being cheesy. And really, the way Hunter treats Elliott is something we should all aspire to have.Although it is briefly addressed but not formerly diagnosed in the book, Elliott is probably also a bit autistic. He has sensory issues and a bit of a childlike joy that you just don't often see in grown men. Especially big pro hockey players. The love these two men had for each other was so pure and perfect. She definitely shouldn’t still be thinking about them after one night together.Faye Donnelley lives with every move photographed or judged. She can handle gossip blogs and political narratives, but what she really wants is something that isn’t for public consumption. One Fourth of July with two college baseball players finally gives her a night that isn’t for cameras or anyone outside that room.Dylan Statler and Jase Matthewson are best friends, stepbrothers, and college teammates with dreams of making it to the big leagues. Hooking up with the president’s daughter was supposed to be a one-time thing. Except they can’t stop checking Faye’s socials or replaying how it felt with her pressed between them, their hands and mouths all over her. After Dylan and Jase are drafted by different teams hundreds of miles apart, their private group text with Faye turns into stolen weekends, hotel rooms, and late-night video calls they can’t resist. It starts to feel like they aren’t just playing for their careers, but for the president’s daughter, and for something between the guys they can’t ignore. If their relationship gets exposed, Faye could become a political talking point while sports media outlets dissect Dylan and Jase’s personal lives instead of their stats. That fallout would be bad enough, but when a terrifying moment shakes their world, it forces them to decide if they’re willing to risk it all or walk away from a relationship that only works when all three are together.✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review this awesome release: bit.ly/pftpdsignup#kimberlyknight #rachellynadams #mmfromance The Author Agency ... Ruthless: Park Avenue Kings Book 5 by Ella Frank and Brooke BlaineMy review:Book 4 left me wanting. It focused so much on Theo and Shep and their relationship that the plot got lost. And there was plot there to be had. And then...CLIFFHANGER! So this book picks up right where book 4 left off. In the jungles of Brazil. Theo has been kidnapped, King and Shep are trying to find him. I'll leave all of that there.Back in New York, the plot (and the kidnapping plot) start to come into focus. The who and the why. But also the anger at not only King, but the others in the group for doubting Theo and for not being more careful.Again, I think things were wrapped up a little too easily and quickly and then the focus was back on the relationship. But at least no cliffhangers. There's one book left in the series and I will definitely read it because I hate leaving things undone. But I am definitely seeing the formula that these authors use in the series that they write.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less
