Violated by Jamie Fessenden : Review

September 23, 2015 by Webby McGee

ViolatedFSsynopsisDerek Sawyer thinks he has it all—a high-salaried position, a boyfriend, a dog, even a new cabin on the lake—until a business trip with his manager and best friend, Victor, shatters his world.

One night of drunken horsing around in their hotel room leads to the most intensely personal violation Derek has ever endured. As if the humiliation of working under his attacker every day isn’t enough, Victor reports Derek for sexual harassment. Now he’s without a job, without a boyfriend, and the mortgage on the cabin is due.

Officer Russ Thomas has worked with rape victims before, and it doesn’t take him long to sort out the truth in Derek’s tale. With his support, Derek finally reports the crime, months after it happened. But restraining orders and lawyers further Victor’s anger toward him, and even though a relationship develops between Derek and the policeman, Russ can’t be there to protect him all the time.denise review

I will admit to being a little afraid of reading this book. I am always concerned about how a rape scene, especially one that is actually written into the book, will be handled. Will it be graphic? Will it be handled well or just glossed over? Can I handle it? So, honestly, even though I was excited to read this, I had to wait until I had “gathered my courage”, before I could sit down and read it.

However, I have to commend Jamie on the handling of this book, from beginning to end. The rape scene was handled so well. I expected to cry (because I am a crier!), but I did not, although I felt rage, and so many raw emotions as I read it. I also really felt that the entire aftermath was handled so expertly. Women report rape very rarely, and men report it even more rarely than that. The stigma that goes along with rape, by victims, often can be that they allowed it, or did not express “NO” clearly enough, and Jamie really wrote that into Derek’s character.

Derek was a man who was physically fit, lifted weights, confident. And yet, on one drunken evening was raped. He lost so much from that night, his job, his virginity and his self confidence. Yet, what was a fascinating part of his character is that before he was raped, he had had the mindset that bottoming was something a manly man did not do, adding yet another layer to how difficult it was for him to find a method of recovering from such a brutal assault.

Meeting Russ, being attracted to him, and even spending some time with him, all before the rape, was critical to Derek finding a level of trust with Russ. What was so key, though, was Jamie portrayed how slow this was. This could have been handled with almost an insta-love feel, but that was not true to the character or the situation. Just a peck on the lips took months. Sleeping in the same bed, with clothes on, and a pillow between them, was a standard mode for a long time. So true to the characters, and to Derek’s recovery. Trust would not come easy to someone who’s trust had been so completely broken. Trust in others, but also in himself, having been friends with his rapist for 20 years.

This book was heart-wrenching, but handled so truthfully, so accurately, to how I believe a man who was raped would have dealt with such a crushing event, even down to how he saw himself. And seeing how Derek was able to slowly recover, finding his way back to himself, back to being able to have a loving relationship was just incredible. So well done.

A beautiful story! 4.5 pieces of eye candy.

Valor on the Move by Keira Andrews : Release Day Review and Giveaway

September 9, 2015 by Denise

valor on the movesynopsis

He’d give his life to protect the president’s son. But he never expected to risk his heart.

Growing up gay in the White House hasn’t been easy for Rafael Castillo. Codenamed “Valor” by the Secret Service, Rafa feels anything but brave as he hides in the closet and tries to stay below the radar in his last year of college. His father’s presidency is almost over, and he just needs to stick to his carefully crafted plan. Once his family’s out of the spotlight, he can be honest with his conservative parents about his sexuality and his dream of being a chef.

It’s definitely not part of Rafa’s plan to get a new Secret Service agent who’s a walking wet dream, but he’s made it this long keeping his desires to himself. Besides, it’s not like Shane Kendrick would even look at him twice if it wasn’t his job.

Shane’s worked his way up through the Secret Service ranks, and while protecting the president’s shy, boring son isn’t his dream White House assignment, it’s an easy enough task since no one pays Rafa much attention. He discovers there’s a vibrant young man beneath the timid public shell, and while he knows Rafa has a crush on him, he assures himself it’s harmless. Shane’s never had room for romance in his life, and he’d certainly never cross that line with a protectee. Keeping Rafa safe at any cost is Shane’s mission.

But as Rafa gets under his skin, will they both put their hearts on the line?

denise reviewGetting the chance to read a Keira Andrews book early, well, that was a yes, please and thank you immediately. She has easily become one of my favorite authors, not just for her characters, and her great love stories. But also, because she writes stories that you just don’t see anywhere else. An Amish Gay Romance? Sure, she can do that! Zombie apocalypse, shifters? Why not? Book about the POTUS’s gay son, when she’s a Canadian? Absolutely! This author can really use her imagination and creativity to bring a story to life (or in the case of Kick at the Darkness, zombie-life) with a fresh and engaging take on it.

I was truly interested to see how someone who great up in Canada could put a different spin on a story that, in my mind would be hard for even Americans to understand all the intricacies with which families of POTUS deal with. So much of that is kept in the dark, not talked about, for obvious security reasons, but also because there is a real mystery to the highest office in the United States. I need not have worried, in Ms. Andrews’ hands, the story was safe for democracy. 🙂

I’m not sure how much of the book had creative license or how much was research that she was able to gather, but amazing job. The mental images of what the White House looks like inside, how the spaces are divided and utilized, and what may or may not be inside are fantastic. I had a fantastic vision of Rafa’s third floor sanctuary, his private kitchen, along with all the little extras on the other floors. Ms. Andrews created a world for me to live in with her characters.

Rafa (code name: Valor) and Shane could not have been further apart in their lives. Rafa, a young man, just beginning his life, planning on moving to Australia to live and afraid to come out to his parents. Meanwhile Shane has worked for years to become a part of the Secret Service’s ultimate calling, guarding POTUS. By guarding his son, he knows he is one step away from that. With this being a May-December romance (the characters are about 18 years apart), and their life experiences being so very different, their coming together was slow. Rafa knew what he wanted, but not sure how to get it, romanced Shane slowly, with food. It was so sweet to see how he could win Shane over by moving quietly.

When Rafa is in danger, Shane is there to keep him safe, save his life, even at the possible expense of his own. Yet he was powerless to resist Rafa’s charms, even without his delicious food.

This story had a little of everything, a closeted young man, a cynical older man, chemistry galore, intrigue from unexpected sources and of course, my required HEA. And I could not have enjoyed it more.

I prefer to save five pieces of eye candy ratings for books that I am SURE I will re-read, and this one fits the bill. This one will be heading to the top of my TBR again, very soon.

Fame and Fortune
An All Cocks
Story book #2

Love should be multiplied, not divided!

synopsis
Victor Dimir
moved to America with his traditional Romanian parents when he was just a
child. His Romani parents taught him their traditions and how to be a shrewd
business man, but it was the attention of a classmate at school that taught
teenage Victor about his sexuality. When he came out to his parents he knew it
would be difficult for them to understand, but he never expected them to disown
him.
Andrew Jones
grew up with a single mom and his grandmother teaching him about life, he had
an absentee father at best. The only thing the man ever did for Andy that stuck
was buy him a camera for his thirteenth birthday. When Andrew went off to
college on a scholarship to study photo journalism, he wound up falling in love
with his Romanian roommate.
They became
inseparable and wound up starting their own business together: a gay porn
website where people could go and watch romantic gay porn instead of the rough
and tough, or wham bam thank you man crap that was flooding the internet at
that time. After ten years together they were still perfectly happy, not
realizing something was missing, until they met a broken young man that needed
a family.
Matthew Carlson
was homeless, jobless and broken. At sixteen he ran away from home after being
brutally assaulted by several young men that he thought were his friends, and
then being told he brought it on himself for being gay by his parents. Matthew
has done a lot of things these last few years just to get by. When he finds the
flyer for All Cocks, he decides to call and see where it leads. What has he got
to lose?
Matthew has deep
rooted scars that aren’t visible on the outside to most. But when he walks into
All Cocks, both Victor and Andrew can see the darkness in his eyes; they also
see him. Can three men that did not know they needed each other get past the
stigma of society to find a place of happiness, together?
*Advisory warning: This story contains a scene of
sexual assault.*

 paula review

I was so excited to read Victor, Andrew, and Mattie’s story. They caught my attention in the first book and I was hoping we would get their story. In this book we get the backstory on how Andrew and Victor met and how All Cocks came to be. Then later down the road how Mattie came to be part of their life. Mattie’s story just broke my heart. He is such a strong young man to go through what he did and how he was treated in the aftermath and survive it without giving up. Then to go from homeless to living with Andrew and Victor.

The way that Andrew and Victor were protective of Mattie was really endearing. Even when he was trying to set up his first scene and they kept giving him other things to do because they really didn’t want him to do the scene. Then how they handled it when he finally had his breakdown about what happened to him. I really liked the way that Andrew and Victor waited to bring Mattie into their relationship until they felt that he was ready and how well they integrated him into it. No jealousy or fighting, just a whole lot of love.

excerpt

*NSFW*

Tate needed no further urging. He lifted himself up, trying to ignore the pain in his battered body, and stared down at the man who half sat, half lay beneath him. Clay’s face was twisted in lust and want, and his cock jutted proudly from the thatch of dark curls at his groin. Tate bit his lip and then lowered himself down onto the hot, slick and eager dick waiting for him. Clay’s deep gasp of satisfaction made his hole throb, as did the burn of Clay in his arse. Tate spread his legs to take Clay deeper then began to slowly move above him, his hips undulating and his inner muscles tightening around Clay’s cock.

The feeling of power he got from watching his lover slowly lose it was like nothing else. That Tate could take such control of this man he loved, that he could watch his self-control unravel like a skein of wool—that was something for a man to be proud of.

As Tate rose and fell, his hands resting behind him on Clay’s strong thighs, Clay’s cock sliding in and out of him, he revelled in the primal urge to be impaled and fucked to destruction. He was flying so high, the bruised ribs and plastered-up shoulder were of no consequence.

Huh. Sexual endorphins make for great painkillers.

 denise review

Susan Mac Nicol is one of my favorite m/m romance authors,  as stressed as she makes me when I am reading her books. I have laughed many times reading one of her books. I have cried about three times as many times (at least three times reading Feat of Clay), and loved her characters for both their sincerity, and their (in some case extreme) flaws. What she never fails to do is integrate heart into each character, no matter the pain, anguish, stress or silly fears, there is always so much heart in each character.

I (mistakenly) thought that I would quick read the first scene/chapter of FOC as I got to the post office to pick up the mail. How wrong I was! I sat in the parking lot crying while reading the torture that the main character Tate was going through. Sue could easily have put this scene “off-screen”, that would have been the easy thing to do. However, Sue rarely takes the easy route with her characters. Tate and Clay are no exception.

Tate, after the torture he endures, returns home and he and Clay finally decide to take their relationship from childhood friends to lovers. While Tate struggles to recover mentally and physically, Clay has to learn to fight his over-protective urges over Tate. They must each learn a new normal, and how to let the world back in.

Seeing how Tate begins to grow into a stronger, healthier person after the trauma is fantastic. But seeing him do it while helping someone who desperately needs to connect as well, that shows another level of healthy that he probably could have only gotten from someone who understands what it means to be tortured just because.

One thing that struck me in this book was as Tate revealed his secrets, there was not instant “this is all okay” from Clay. He didn’t sweep it under the rug and just pretend that he was not affected with the truths he was forced to face. Although he still expressed his love for Tate, he knew there was no magic wand that would fix this, that would make him feel like this was going to just disappear. It broke my heart to read (one of the multiple cries in this book for me) to read what Tate had been carrying on his shoulders, and know there was no quick fix.

Through it all, the love between these two was so clear, so strong, it was never in doubt. It kept going strong, even when they needed their time apart. It made it seem like these two were truly living breathing people, fighting for their love and their lives together.

I’ve already expressed to Sue who I would like to see come out for a book soon, from this story, and yeah for me, she said it was on the burner. Yeah!

Highly recommend, although, giving you a little warning…don’t start reading it in public like I did. Embarrasing.

“Yoo Hoo! Dell, ya up there, ya sidewinder! Get outa bed or I’m gonna drag that lazy ass out!”

“What?” Pace said, startled awake as he lifted his head from Dell’s chest where he’d fallen asleep in the wee hours of the morning. He wiped his face of drool and stared across the muscled chest he loved, finding Dell’s face. He had one eye peeled open and he didn’t look all too happy by what sounded like Branch’s bellowing from downstairs.

“Fuckin’ ass poor timin’,” Dell grumbled as they both sat upright in bed. Pace knew it would be pretty awful if Branch came bursting into the room with them, lying buck naked in bed. “Guess I’d better find out just what the hell he’s doin’ here.” Pace watched as Dell threw his legs over the side of the bed. He watched his ass from behind, noting the muscled expanse of his back and the thick thighs he loved so much, as the man stood.960x350 (3)

“What the hell is he doing here? He and the boys had a show,” Pace grumbled.

“Ya rattlesnake! Ya need me to come up there and put my boot up yer ass?” Branch howled. Pace couldn’t help but chuckle. He loved his brother but he loved the disgusted look on Dell’s face more. Dell walked to the doorway and stuck his head out.

“I’ll be down in a minute, ya jackass… unless ya want to see me in all my nekkid glory!” Dell yelled back.

Pace heard a chuckle coming from downstairs. “Hell naw! Get some clothes on there, scarecrow! Yer movin’ slower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut.”

“Oh for Christ’s sake, here we go,” Dell said, glancing over at him. Pace just buried his face in the pillow and laughed.

paula review

This story was a huge hit for me.  It was such an amazingly sweet story with a couple of fantastic characters. Dell and Pace just captured my heart from the moment I met them. I really liked the way Dell handles his “coming out” so to speak.  It is done with so much lightness and humor.  The interactions between Dell and Pace just made me melt.

Dell just has a feeling of such sincere niceness that you can’t help but love him. I like his kind of “roll with it” attitude. There are a few instances where you see a little bit of insecurity in Dell, but he always just pushed through and I like that.  Pace is just so confident in himself that its fun to read.  He is so understanding and nice when it comes to Dell’s inexperience.

I spent most of the time reading this smiling.  I didn’t want the story to end, I could have kept reading about these two forever.  The cast of secondary characters in the book just enriched it so much.  Dell’s mom had me laughing so hard, and Paisley was just a dynamo. The story as a whole flowed really well. I can’t wait for more.

Transmundo (Book One: Escape) by Varian Krylov : Review and Excerpt

August 20, 2015 by Denise

trasmundo-final-1800x2700synopsis

Strange, quiet Luka doesn’t live in this world; long ago he took refuge in his art, escaping into surreal mindscapes inspired by his favorite painters. In the beautifully monstrous realms of his imagination, he is safe from the pain of his losses: his family, his friends, his hope.

Until war breaks out, and he is forced to flee the only home he’s known since he was thirteen.

Captured by an enemy soldier, young Luka is marched across brutal terrain, toward a fate known only by the bearded menace holding him prisoner. Quick with a knife, tireless and strong, Tarik guards the purpose of his mission as he takes Luka deeper and deeper into enemy territory.

When the soldier discovers the painful secret he has been hiding since childhood, Luka fears he is about to endure a new kind of cruelty, worse than being abandoned, ostracized or beaten. Or is it possible the soldier holding Luka prisoner is the one person who isn’t afraid of the truth behind Luka’s silence and lies?
michelle review

I’ve just recently started reading books by Varian Krylov (not sure what took so long to find them) so I was really excited to get a chance to read “Transmundo”, however my excitement of reading a new author was quickly changed to an absolute adoration for her.   I have never read such an emotionally raw & gritty story that made me ache for more.   Ms. Krylov words wrap around you until you realize you should probably breath while reading.

The character description & detailed storyline is one of the best I have read in a long time.   You feel Luka’s pain, you hear his cries, you see the brutality of his world. My heart broke for him and at times I was afraid to proceed reading. I was holding my breath, reading with my fingers blocking half my eyes & heart pounding.   Tarik is everything Luka is afraid of and everything he needs. When I reached the ending I sat there, staring at the page wondering how Krylov will top herself with the next book. I am extremely anxious, hand shankingly nervous and overly excited for “Exile”!   I know it will not be hearts and flowers and that is what I am counting on.

If you are a Varian Krylov fan you will be blown away by this one. If you have never read any of her work I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.   Krylov style of writing is nothing like you have read!   I am forever a 1-click for her and am very grateful for the beautiful stories she creates for us.

**Varian told TCO that a photo shoot was done just for this book. Check out these cool photos that go along with the excerpt.**

It was weird, seeing himself in the mirror. He’d lost weight, and his cheekbones were much more pronounced than they used to be. While he brushed, Luka fingered the bruise ringing his neck, a nauseating chill slinking through him at the sight of the wound on his wrist as he lifted his hand to his lips, pushing them out of shape the way they must have squished and bulged while Begović smeared them with lipstick. Had he really looked like a girl? Or had they only said it to humiliate him?

What did Tarik see, when he looked at him?06 _E2A9540 - copia hires notats

Daris. Tarik was a father. Even though Luka tried to push it away, he couldn’t escape the image of Tarik kissing the ephemeral vision Luka had of the mother of his child, holding her in his arms, lying on top of her, moving over her. What was he to Tarik? Maybe, probably, he was just an implement. A diverting alternative to jerking off.

Stripped naked, Luka’s bruise-mottled body didn’t match his face, like a perverse child had put the wrong head on his doll’s body. He wrapped a towel around himself, pulling it tight across his chest and tucking the corner in like starlets he’d seen in old movies. Maybe Begović was right. Luka took the wet towel Tarik had used, charged with the little thrill of knowing that dampness came from Tarik’s body, and wrapped it around his head like a turban. He looked like someone else.

Was that other self in the mirror a revelation, or an erasure?

Luka jumped and gasped, startled by the soft knock at the bathroom door.

“Luka?”

He took a breath and tried to calm his voice. “Yeah?”

“I just wanted to make sure you’re okay. I didn’t hear the shower.”

A reckless impulse, reaching out, fingers trembling, heart pounding hard, legs unsteady, and opening the door.

“Are you alright?” Tarik held his gaze, and Luka couldn’t tell if Tarik saw the revelation, or the erasure.

“I was just trying to decide…” Luka stopped and took another breath because his voice was failing him. Then his courage failed him. He couldn’t say it.

Tarik gave him a kind smile. “What were you trying to decide?”

“Like this,” a breath, a leap, “do I look like a woman?”

Tarik’s kind smile still frozen in place, his eyes filled with confusion. After a few horrible seconds of silence, in a low voice he asked, “Do you want to look like a woman?”

“I don’t know.” He didn’t want to start crying. “Would you like it?”

“I don’t understand, Luka. Are you… does this have something to do with what Armin and Begović did to you?”

It didn’t. But it did. “They liked it.”

Tarik was quiet for a few moments, and Luka had the feeling he was carefully weighing each syllable of whatever he might say next. “Was the wig your idea?”

“No.” The word shuddered out of him, embarrassment squeezing his ribs in a sudden clench.

Tarik’s stance and expression softened.

“But if you’d like me like that…” He hated that he couldn’t keep his voice even.

Without knowing why, when Tarik stepped toward him, Luka backed away until he was up against the counter. “Do you know how I’d like you, Luka?”

Why was he shaking so badly? Why couldn’t he speak? Why was he suddenly cold, shivering in some lingering shadow of the fear he’d fel06 _E2A9595 notatst those first moments in the cave, Tarik bearded and wielding his big knife, twisting up in the terror of the belt squeezing his throat closed while Armin forced his mouth open?

Tarik raised his hand to Luka’s face. Bracing himself, willing himself to be still, Luka waited for a touch. A caress. Instead, Tarik lifted the towel from Luka’s head and dropped it on the counter. “This is how I’d like you to be. Just as you are.”

When Tarik touched the towel Luka had wrapped around his body, a shudder shook Luka. Tarik hesitated a moment, then, watching his eyes, pulled the corner free from where Luka had tucked it under his arm. A strangled little noise escaped Luka’s throat and he caught Tarik’s wrist.

“You don’t want me to?”

Luka met his eyes, but his hand stayed frozen

“Why does it scare you? Are you still afraid I’ll get angry with you?”

Luka’s throat felt like it was clogged with glue. “No.”

Voice quiet, but firm. “Then let me look at you.”

Like falling, falling from the safety of trusted arms toward cold, suffocating water waiting to swallow him, giddy with dread, bracing himself, Luka made himself let go of Tarik’s wrist.

Holding his gaze, Tarik pulled the towel from Luka’s body, then slowly looked him over. Panting for breath, Luka rooted himself there, strangling his desperate need to duck away, to run, to hide under something. To disappear.

Tarik’s gaze slid up his torso, and met his eyes. His voice was low and thick. “This is how I like you, Luka.”

Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less

✨TEASER: LICKED by @charlienwrites releasing May 12th!#PreOrderNowmybook.to/lickitoneWhy you need to #ONECLICK this book…🍦Very Nerdy Meet Cute 🍦Low Angst🍦Slow Burn🍦Lingerie🍦First Times🍦Blowjobs in Beach Huts🍦Supportive & Nosy Friends🍦Sweetness & Spice🍦“Let Me Help You” 🍦MM RomanceLick It Like A Good BoyIt’s not often you meet gorgeous gothic men at wargaming tournaments. So, of course I tripped over my tongue instead of asking for his number. And despite my friends’ numerous offers to help find him online, we’re too busy opening Lick It!, our new ice cream shop, to spare time for my non-existent love life. But when Jonathan walks through the door on a sunny Friday afternoon, I can’t help but feel like it’s fate. He’s shy, sweet, and we immediately click. Jonathan doesn’t have much experience with relationships, so I’m determined to give him the attention he deserves, even if it means I’m pulled in two directions. With summer heating up and the shop getting hectic, spending time together is getting harder and harder. I don’t know how to balance the long hours and being a good boyfriend, but I know I have to figure it out. Because meeting Jonathan is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. ✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review this awesome release: bit.ly/lickedsignup#charlienovak #mmromance #kindleunlimited The Author Agency ...
