Top Shelf by Allison Temple: Blog Tour, Exclusive Guest Post, Excerpt, Release Day Review and Giveaway

May 21, 2019 by Denise

Martin is a ghost. Well, not really, but he might as well be. Job gone, home gone, self-respect gone, and no one even seems to notice. The only person who really sees him is Seb, the artist who lives above the used bookstore.

Seb haunts the edges of Seacroft in search of beauty. He knows how to excavate the hidden value in abandoned things–whether it’s in the pages of forgotten books or in Martin’s stuttering attempts to rebuild his life–and transform them into works of art.

Two lost souls, Seb and Martin discover the strength they need to face eccentric townies and their dysfunctional families together. But as friendship sparks toward something more, neither man wants to risk what they’ve only just found. It takes two to fall in love, but it will take the whole community to bring their beauty to life.

Top Shelf is an 81k slow burn friends-to-lovers MM romance. It features an anxious professor, a drama queen artist, a bookstore that might be haunted, and a full-blown heart-eyes HEA.

Small Town Quirks

Welcome to Seacroft, North Carolina. Population 15,832, give or take a few thousand when tourist season rolls around. Seacroft is known for its sprawling beaches and sunshine, but the real stories happen when the tourists go home. The town’s residents have their secrets and their scars, and while they’ll come together to help a neighbor in need, it takes a certain kind of love to help everyone find their place in the sun.

I love small towns. This is in part because I grew up in one, so I know how to appreciate the quirks while overlooking their drawbacks—like public transit that only comes once an hour, grocery stores that close at suppertime every night of the week, and the inevitable sense of otherness that happens when you arrive in one without a family connection or other shared history.

Small towns are naturally close-knit. It’s not always about being suspicious of people from other places, it’s just that you see the same people so often, you get to know them well. In the big city, where I live now, you only know one facet of a person’s life. They’re your neighbor, your co-worker, maybe your doctor or your butcher. In a small town, they’re all those things rolled into one.

Here’s an example.

Growing up, my family doctor was also a good family friend. His ex-wife went to college with my mom and his daughter was my brother’s first girlfriend. Or we could talk about the local kindergarten teacher who was also my grandmother’s neighbor and had a sailboat at the same marina where my parents kept theirs.

It’s almost inevitable that you just get to know people better in a small town because your lives overlap so much.

In Top Shelf, Seacroft is a lot like this. Business owners are neighbors and also sit on the same fundraising committees. It seems warm and cozy, but it can be isolating for newcomers. Martin is naturally shy, and the bustle of Seacroft leaves him feeling more invisible than anything. And Seb seems completely accepted into the community, but he’s spent his whole life feeling like an outsider.

Kinda seems like they should meet, doesn’t it?

Are you a small-town person? Big city dweller? Tell me what you like about where you live. And check out Top Shelf, available on Amazon right now.

The distinct sound of footsteps had him freezing in place again. Martin’s breath went shallow, and he clutched at the phone. Was it inappropriate to call the police on his first day of work? There was someone in the store, and Martin was very sure he had not seen anyone come in since Cassidy had left.

He moved in between the shelves as his mind raced. What if someone had snuck in? Broken in?

Why would someone sneak in to steal used books?

Martin grabbed a cookbook off a shelf labeled ‘Everything is Better With Salt’ and hefted it, testing the weight. If someone was back there, and that someone was up to no good, Martin could use the book as a weapon.

There was a soft sound of someone humming, and it made the hairs on Martin’s neck prickle. He tripped at the edge of the next shelf.

“Cass, is that you?”

Martin froze with the cookbook half-raised to his shoulder. Every part of him went on alert at the sound of a man’s voice, much closer than he’d expected.

Another book dropped to the ground.

He peeked around a shelf. The first thing his brain registered was white, and it was almost enough to convince him that he was seeing a ghost. His fingers tightened around the cookbook.

A long pale arm reached up and lifted a book off the very top shelf.

It was a man.

He wore faded jeans and a gray T-shirt. His hair was bleached blond. If he was a thief, he was a terrible one, because he flipped through the book, then let it drop to the floor next to what must have been the other ones Martin had already heard fall.

He was a man though, whoever he was. Tall and solid. Not a ghost. Martin lowered the cookbook. Assaulting a customer on his first day would be a bad career move.

“Excuse me,” he said, but it was drowned out as the next book thumped to the floor. Martin hopped back a step, but gathered himself and tried again. “Excuse me. I’m closing up.”

“Sure thing,” the man said as he stretched up on his toes again, reaching for another book. His shirt lifted from the waist of his jeans, and the skin underneath was so pale it enhanced his ghostly appearance.

When Martin didn’t leave, the man glanced over his shoulder, and his face made Martin’s heart stop. He wasn’t a ghost or a thief, but whoever he was, he was handsome. Blue eyes flicked up and down once, like he was trying to decide the kind of threat Martin might pose.

As Martin inhaled to assert himself again, the man turned back to the shelf.

“You—” Martin swallowed hard, willing himself to stand firm. “You’ll have to go.”

Those blue eyes darted toward Martin again, like a wrist flicking at a fly. The man grinned, a slow sly grin that made Martin’s insides twist.

“You’re new, aren’t you?” the man said.

Martin’s ears burned. He knew a dismissal when he heard one.

“If—If there’s something you’d like to buy, I can help you cash out. Otherwise, we’ll be open again on Monday at—” What time did they open? It had been nine o’clock on Saturday. Was it the same time on weekdays?

The blond man frowned, and Martin’s heart lurched under the stranger’s scrutiny. He couldn’t remember the last time someone had really looked at him. For all his rising panic at the feeling of being alone in the store earlier, he very much wanted to return to that solitude right now. It was so much better than being the center of this man’s attention.

“How long have you worked here?” The strange man’s voice was soft and low, rippling through the space between them.

Martin shivered and had to focus to keep his feet planted. “We’re closing and—”

“Where’s Cass?” The man glanced over Martin’s shoulder, giving him a moment to breathe.

“Cassidy? She went home.”

“What’s your name?” Those eyes were on Martin again in an instant, making him light-headed.

“Martin.” Too late, he wondered if he shouldn’t have introduced himself, particularly when the other man made no effort to return the favor.

“Well then, Martin.” The man took a step forward. “It appears no one bothered to inform you—”

“I’ll call the owner.” Martin was losing ground and needed to fix this quickly. Calling Mrs. Green to resolve a grumpy customer was absolutely a bad idea, but he was on the verge of being run out of his own bookstore, so there weren’t many options left.

To illustrate that point, the blond man’s eyes widened and his lips formed into an ‘O’.

“No no. Please.” He held his hands wide, as his mouth pulled into another grin. Everything about it made Martin want to shrink into himself until he was nothing but a speck of dust on a bookshelf.

“I’m sorry,” he said, giving it one last go. “But we close at six and—”

The man didn’t appear to hear him. He toed through the pile of books at his feet.

Martin winced as pages bent under his shoes. “Please don’t—”

Thin fingers pinched the crumpled pages together and lifted them in the air, the book’s heavy covers flopping to the sides. There was the soft sound of paper tearing.

The man tucked the book under one arm. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’ll pay for it.” He put a hand in one of his pockets, then actually swaggered toward Martin, whose vision wavered as the man’s fingers brushed against his own. Martin gasped at the hard weight of something metal in his palm. The silence of the bookshop was broken by the sound of coins tumbling out of Martin’s frozen hand and onto the floor.

“That should cover it.” The man whispered it low. The feeling of his breath on Martin’s skin made him turn into a Martin-shaped statue, frozen in place as the other man slid past him.

“Nice to meet you,” the man said. “I’m sure we’ll see each other again.”

It felt like hours, but it probably was only a matter of seconds before he trembled and broke out of his daze. The floorboards creaked as the man walked away. Martin knelt and collected the coins he’d dropped. They were all nickels and dimes, and they totaled up to just under two dollars.

A door closed and the shop fell quiet.

Martin wound his way back the way he’d come. Nerves boiled inside him, and he hesitated around every blind corner between shelves, half expecting the blond stranger to leap out at him like some deranged Jack in the Box. He stumbled into the open space at the front.

He was alone.

Martin went to the door. It surprised him that the hinges hadn’t made their booming wail as the man left.

His hand stopped as he reached for the deadbolt. It was still in position. The door was locked.

Where had the man come from? And where had he gone?

I first have to say that this is a new to me author, but I’m such a sucker for the wounded bird, that I really wanted to see what Martin was about. From the blurb, I didn’t understand what happened to cause the situation he was in right then, and to be honest, though it was touched on, I’m still unsure how it affected him the way it did and what he actually went through. I might’ve missed something, but I’m just not sure. I really felt for him though, because he was so relatable. Kind of going through this really hard thing and needing a place to just start over and restart his life and figure out where he was going to go and what he was going to do.

Having a PhD and then finding himself on the better side of what I saw as a nervous breakdown, he was feeling pretty low. He needed to take baby steps and that’s what he was doing, trying to find himself again. That’s when he found a little book shop with a cute high schooler and broody upstairs tenant to make his days entertaining.

Now, I’m going to say, I did not like many people in this book, even Seb, the main character. He does not have a lot of redeeming qualities for the first half. He’s entitled, bratty and just not a good person. I could kind of understand, because you’ll meet his father and he’s an even worse person. The way he treated Seb his whole life was literally abusive, if only emotionally and often times verbally, and I’m sure that once he got old enough, Seb pushed that and egged it on… but no…. I think the author tried to make the father redeemable towards the end, but the damage was already done.

I also heavily, heavily, heavily disliked Kenneth, Seb’s manager. He’s selfish, also entitled, bratty and just so self centered that he kind of just made me sick. I kind of wish that Martin would’ve punched him a time or two just because he’s so annoying and in your face about it. I literally almost stopped reading because of him.

Seb’s brother Oliver also took me a while to warm up to. He seemed shady and untrustworthy and I didn’t like how he treated Seb either. The only person in Seb’s family that seemed to care about him, was his Nana and she was only around for a second. I hated that for him and it kind of done a little bit to warm me up to Seb. Not much, but a little bit.

I finally turned a corner with him when I saw how he was with Martin. His mouth still got the better of him sometimes and he reminded me of a villain more often that not. When he feels any emotion at all, he turns hostile and doesn’t care who he hurts in the process and I just can’t stand those kind of people. It made him hard to relate to, and hard to like….at least in my opinion.

Between Seb’s family and a Seb running away and being awful at the first sign of trouble, I wasn’t so sure that these two were going to make it. I really hoped, but I also kind of thought that Martin deserved better. Seb pulled it together in the end, and I appreciated that his family tried at the end… but, his father was unforgivable and I hated that they even tried. Like a lifetime was all forgotten because 6 months had passed by saying, 6-months-later.

I dunno… maybe I’m being too picky and maybe I’m protective over Martin because I see so much of myself in him and I thought that he deserved better. I was happy with the friends that he made, the relationship he had with his brother and even Seb for helping him find himself, even if half of it was standing up for himself and fighting for someone else. I’m guess the next book is about brother Ollie, and though I’m curious… I’ll have to see how much influence their father has in the next story, otherwise I’ll give it a skip.

FAVORITE LINE“How does that work?” Martin wasn’t following. “If I met a girl I liked – when I met Jess – I just knew. You know? I walked right up to her and told ehr I was buying her a drink. But, if it were a guy… what do you do? Martin tried not to be annoyed.

“We take our shirts off and flap our arms while we turn in a circle squawking like a chicken. It’s the secret gay mating dance. They teach it to us in a special after-school health class.”

Exclusive Excerpt – Dog Love

I opened the folder for more information on my next appointment as I left the examining room.

Rex, apparently.

I scanned for more details as I walked. It was a new client, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, age approximately two years old. I glanced around the waiting room; Rex was easy to spot. He was damn pony size. I never got over the fact of how huge these dogs were, nor how soft they could be.

“Rex.” My eyes then drifted to the owner, and I grinned.

Tanner stood, a wide grin spread across his face. “Hey.”

I tilted my head, my gaze drifting between Rex and Tanner, my grin still wide. “Do you want to come through?” I indicated the corridor behind me and watched as he stood, patting the dog’s head and offering him words of reassurance. My stomach flipped. He was so gorgeous.

Heading toward me, his smile became a smirk as he looked me up and down. His eyes lingered briefly on my face, focusing on my small scratches. I shrugged them off and beamed. It took all my willpower to lead him away rather than leaning in to kiss him. Clearing my throat, I led him to the examination room. “So,” I started once he was in the room and I’d closed the door behind him, “who do we have here?”

Tanner was crouched down next to Rex. He planted a kiss on the dog’s head and stroked him gently. “Meet Rex.”

Strangely, the two made an adorable pair. I snorted at the thought, earning me a raised brow from Tanner. It seemed like a bizarre word choice for him. Sexy, rugged, those rolled easier off the tongue, but still—

I took a slow step toward Rex and Tanner. While Rex was neither growling nor cowering, the breed was known for their stubbornness and protectiveness. Since Tanner had never mentioned picking up a dog, I could only assume he’d been this morning and had then collected Rex. That being the case, the dog wouldn’t have formed an attachment yet, but he was bound to be nervous.

“So, what’s this guy’s story?” I kneeled in front of them both and flicked my gaze at Rex and then Tanner. I didn’t attempt to reach out to Rex, waiting instead for him to give me a good sniff and then approach me.

Tanner’s eyes filled with excitement. “I got a call just as I was starting work on the drywall saying this guy had arrived and was in need of a home and ready to be collected.” He scratched the dog’s ear as he continued, “I’ve been on their list for months now, so had already been approved. He was literally brought in this morning, and since they had all of Rex’s paperwork and background, they wanted to rehome him immediately.”

Joy surrounded every word he spoke. It was impossible not to get caught up in his enthusiasm. I smiled, my focus fixed on him.

Cuuuuute cover!

First, we have Tanner, who inherited a house from a grandfather that he wasn’t particularly close with. It needed a lot of work and as a veterinarian, he knew he needed to hire a professional to get it into shape. That’s where he meets Carter.

Carter had recently moved to the small town to follow his best friend who was more like a brother and baby niece. Hot guys with babies? My kinda story, though we don’t really see too much baby time, it was still admirable and I loved the relationship he had with his brother.

Meeting Tanner was entertaining to say the least, not only were these two attracted to one another on site, but a hilarious mishap makes their first impression of each other had me cracking up. It was all a little bit over the top and at times cheesy kind of sweet, but it worked for them. They tried to deny their attraction at first, because once Carter was hired on to do the job of fixing up Tanner’s house, they’d be around each other pretty frequently for several months…. Could get awkward if hooking up didn’t work out…

I’ll admit that the beginning seemed kind of far fetched… like, I wouldn’t invite my contractor to dinner the second time I meet him and I probably wouldn’t go to a bar with him while working on my house, it could come off as unprofessional, but their friendship turned into a relationship the second Carter got all growly when someone started giving Tanner trouble. Who can resist a growly, protective hot guy? Again… it just worked for them.

Now, it isn’t all cheesy and romantic dialogue and hot contractors with cute dogs and a veterinarian with a hilarious mother… there is some hatefulness, and I just hate seeing so much blatant hate for any reason, but because of someone’s sexuality is just so wrong to me and we have a bully here. Granted, he does somewhat redeem himself, because Tanner is very forgiving, but, it just rubbed me the wrong way… I hate when bad guys just get away with being bad guys and though it wasn’t all what it appeared to be, just be warned you’ll get frustrated …. It all works out in the end though…. Kind of… I might be interested in seeing if the bully gets his own story.
Overall though, it was just sweet and flowery and very low angst, which is just right for me.

Crazy Things Found In the Woods

Hello, everybody! I’m Marie Sexton, and I’m here today to celebrate the re-release of my very first novel, Promises. I asked my Facebook group for blog post topics, and because Promises features geocaching, one of my readers suggested I write about the top five weirdest things I’d found while doing it.

The problem is, I’ve never actually been geocaching! It’s one of those things hubby and I used to think we’d like to do, but we never got around to it. (Having a baby really threw a wrench in our camping/4-wheeling lifestyle!) So instead, I started Googling strange things found in the woods.

As you can imagine, there are all kinds of oddball things — from landmines to dead animals arranged in odd ways to headstones and altars to dolls, teddy bears, and clowns. (Yeah. Clowns.) One of the most interesting stories I stumbled across was about a cabin in the Arcata Forest. The cabin itself was odd enough, but the really strange thing was what they found when they went to check on it later.

You can the Google the disappearing Arcata cabin, or check out this video (the link should take you to the relevant segment):

https://youtu.be/HnPcnu-I9Uk?t=288

But that made me think about the things I’ve personally encountered in the woods. Before we had our daughter, my husband and I camped ALL THE TIME. We had one particular rutted dirt road we liked to camp along — there were three or four awesome spots between it and the river. We’d even skip out of work early on Fridays so we could get up there before anybody else. But one weekend, we found something ….odd.

It was a photo of an old woman in a bed, hooked up to a respirator. It didn’t look like a real photograph, if that makes sense. It looked more like a stock photo that might be used to advertise a nursing home or respite care. I don’t really know how to explain it other than by saying the scene looked too clean and staged, with the focus being more on the respirator than the woman. It had been blown up to about 11×17 inches and professionally mounted on foamboard, and was nailed to a tree right in the center of the camping spot. In the fire pit, we found remnants of what seemed to be a luggage set, all burned up.

Mostly, I just can’t see why somebody paid to have this photo of what appeared to be a woman literally on her deathbed blown up and mounted, but then left it nailed to a tree in the woods.

The second oddest thing I ever ran across wasn’t an item. It was a man. A buck-ass naked man, actually.

We were at Lake Powell. My friend Caroline and I were canoeing in one of the little side canyons (they probably have a name, but I’m not sure what it is) when we heard music. We followed it, and ran across a rather large, elaborate campsite. It looked as if the campers had been living there for quite some time. The young woman on shore waved excitedly and invited us to join her for a beer. We figured, why not? But as we were paddling to shore, a much older man came out of the tent, completely nude. I assumed he’d be embarrassed and rush to put on some pants, but no. He brought us our beers, and chatted with us, completely calm and naked the entire time.

The really odd thing is, they somehow ended up coming to our houseboat for dinner that night. I don’t remember why in the world we invited the naked man to our boat. I think it was because the young woman with him seemed so desperate for company. Luckily, the man wore clothes that night.

Back when we camped a lot, we often had people ask us if we were afraid of bears or wolves. Honestly, we never saw either. The scariest thing we ever found in our campsite was a herd of cows, who left the place a bit messy when they left.

That’s it! Those are the craziest things I’ve found in the woods. What about you? Have you ever found anything you just couldn’t explain?

For those who are interested, you can join my private Facbook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/MarieSextonFans/

That’s about the only place on social media where I hang out and talk about things other than hockey. J

Thanks very much to Two Chicks Obsessed for having me here today!

When they spend time alone on a Montana mountainside will Tyler ever convince Martin that like sapphires, love is worth searching for?

Martin’s name was the very last on a kill list. The son of a murderer, he’s had no childhood; lost in a horrific holding pattern of death that turned his heart to stone. Thanks to the man who called him brave and spared his life, he no longer has to look over his shoulder, but he does have one question. Why did Justin let him live?

Tyler Colby has identified a major flaw in the seismic mapping system used to monitor earthquake activity. Sent to Crooked Tree by his employer, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, he is tasked with adding a new remote station to the network. The installation should be his entire focus, but the lure of sapphires and his attraction to a heartbroken young man called Martin is enough to make him want more.

I was SOOO pumped when I heard about this one. I honestly thought this series was over after the last one..

In this one, we have Martin, who was previously known as Jamie Crane, the son of the terrorist/torturer of Justin and Adam. My heart broke for him in the little glimpses we got from him in previous books, especially Justin and Adam’s, and although I could probably guess the kind of person his father was, it didn’t hold a candle to the life that Martin had suffered at the hand of his father and his goons.

So, now that his father was dead and Martin was no longer having to hide from him, he wanted to go to Crooked Tree to ask Justin why he’d let him live. Now, if you haven’t read the others in this series, you should stop what you’re doing and go read them!! I was so insanely obsessed with Justin and Sam, but really all of their stories are amazing!

At the Crooked Tree, Justin wants to tell Martin the answer to his question, but he wants to talk to Adam first, who is away on his honeymoon…so he talks Martin into staying and helping out around the ranch. So, when seismology expert, Tyler, comes to do some research, the group, aka, Justin, sends him to work with the guy. Mostly to keep him around, I’d wager. Justin knew that Martin needed the closure, and Adam really did too. So, Martin stayed and helped, not really having a plan anyway, as to where he was going to end up or what he was going to end up doing.

I’ll admit that the earthquake stuff was interesting to learn about, but it was too much like homework for me to get sucked into it. I did skim a little bit, but I could imagine the way that Tyler had become so animated and passionate about what he was talking about. It wasn’t just a job, it was his life and it was neat to learn.

While the guys are off the range together, even though Martin is broody and hard to get to know… Tyler loved learning what he could about the man, and eventually, he’d gone and fell in love with him.

When you see Martin’s baggage and his internal turmoil, it’s easy to see why he refused so much almost the entire book, but, it somehow felt very realistic and relatable.

It made his final acceptance and letting his guard down that much more enjoyable. I just loved this story and I’m so glad to report that Martin got his HEA, even if it did take a long time to get there. I knew that he wasn’t going to be easy, but he was 100% worth it.

Murder Most Lovely by Hank Edwards and Deanna Wadsworth: Exclusive Guest Post & Excerpt Release Day Review and Giveaway

April 30, 2019 by Denise

I’m so excited today! I’ve been waiting for this post for a while. Hank Edwards and Deanna Wadsworth are here to give everyone a little taste of Murder Most Lovely, their new release with Dreamspinner Press. I’m a cat person…like seriously a cat person (I have 5) and so having Mr. Pickles Furryton the Third hosted on here was even more of a pleasure. He’s a sassy little (well, not little, he’s fat) cat who gets himself catnapped by some dangerous peeps. But all in all I couldn’t have enjoyed this stop more, so check out the excerpt, the giveaway, and my gushing review. 🙂

A killer at a small-town literary festival. Bumbling drug dealers. A kidnapped cat. Starting a romance among all this chaos might be the death of them.

Michael Fleishman is excited to meet his favorite mystery writer, Russell Withingham, at Lacetown’s Literary Fest. He is not expecting to cross paths with sexy hairdresser Jasper “Jazz” Dilworth—or become embroiled in a real-life mystery. As Lacetown’s only mortician and the county coroner, Michael is called to his first murder scene and is shocked to recognize the victim—Russell’s young lover.

Jazz only wanted to confront his ex, Russell, over his cheating. Instead, he meets the adorably awkward Michael and becomes a murder suspect. Soon Jazz is teaming up with Michael to clear his name. Along the way, they are helped and hindered by Michael’s sassy assistant, Kitty, the grumpy Sheriff Musgrave, Russell’s creepy PR rep, Norbert, and Michael’s lothario grandfather, who likes his manhattans strong and his women saucy. And of course, Mr. Pickles Furryton the Third….

Meet Mr. Pickles Furryton III

If you haven’t heard yet, Hank Edwards and Deanna Wadsworth wrote a book together. It’s a laugh out loud romantic mystery set in a fictional Lake Michigan town named Lacetown.

A killer at a small-town literary festival. Bumbling drug dealers. A kidnapped cat. Starting a romance among all this chaos might be the death of them.

The MCs are sharp witted and sarcastic Jasper “Jazz” Dilworth and the outwardly shy but dirty-minded mortician Michael Fleishman. But the real scene stealer of  Murder Most Lovely—Lacetown Mysteries Case One is Mr. Pickles Furryton III, Michael’s fat black-and-white kitty.

Michael carries Mr. Pickles back and forth between his house and the funeral home. Mr. Pickles has the run of the funeral home (not the basement, however, where the embalming takes place), and sometimes acts as a therapy cat for people who are grieving.

Mr. Pickles had a lot of personality, and he plays a large part in the story. At one point, the poor kitty is cat-napped and held for ransom, a twist that leaves Michael in deep anguish.

But don’t worry! No cats were harmed in the making of Murder Most Lovely!

Enjoy a special excerpt for TCO readers where Jazz meet’s Mr. Pickles for the first time when he picks Michael up for their first date. Michael is unfortunately still working on the autopsy of the gruesome murder victim discovered in Lacetown, so Jazz goes next door to the funeral parlor where Michael works to wait for him, hoping Michael hasn’t forgotten about their date.

EXCERPT:

“You can wait in this display room,” the buxom blonde told Jazz. She’d said her name was Kitty.

When Michael had texted seven was still a good time, Jazz hadn’t expected Michael to still be working next door at the funeral parlor. But he supposed the death business didn’t run on a schedule. He could understand that.

Being a hairdresser, Jazz might be scheduled to work until five but end up being at the salon until seven. Russell had always acted like Jazz was lying, probably cheating because of his unpredictable hours.

Pot calling the kettle black.

“He’s just finishing up,” Kitty went on. “You don’t mind sitting in here, do you? The offices are private.”

Jazz looked around the large room. Where some funeral homes went overboard with floral wallpapers, antique furniture in the vein of “look but don’t touch,” and watercolor landscapes, Jazz was happy to see that was not the case at Fleishman Funeral Home. Soft pastel wallpaper, tasteful comfortable furniture, and a few plants made the room feel welcoming. “It’s just a room.”

“Where the deceased are displayed,” she countered, gesturing to the front of the room where heavy drapes and two pedestals framed a space for caskets. “Makes some people uncomfortable and—” Her words were cut off by a meow.

They both looked down when a fat black-and-white cat joined them and began caressing itself on her leg.

“This is Mr. Pickles Furryton the Third,” she said. “I suppose he can keep you company while you wait. That should make it less creepy.”

Jazz tried not to frown. It was almost like she was trying to weird him out. Maybe it was a test of some sort. To see if Jazz was worthy of Michael.

If that was the case, Jazz was going to like this lady. Anyone that protective of her friends was a good person.

“Mr. Pickles Furryton the Third,” Jazz said, smiling at the cat. He knelt and held out a hand, knowing better than to pet a cat without its express permission.

“Yes, he’s Mr. Fleishman’s cat. Comes to work with him every day,” Kitty explained.

Oh my God, Michael just got more adorable every second.

A grown man who named his cat Mr. Pickles Furryton the Third was a man after Jazz’s own heart.

“I’ll leave you two to get acquainted,” she told him. “I’m headed out for the evening. Enjoy your important meeting with Mr. Fleishman.” With a flirtatious wink that surely made all the straight boys drool, Kitty sauntered off.

And yes, those curvy hips definitely knew how to saunter.

Once alone with the cat, Jazz sat down. Mr. Pickles jumped lightly to the padded arm of the chair and paraded back and forth as Jazz stroked his soft fur. He must have been doing things correctly, because Mr. Pickles was purring like a small lawn mower. But just as that thought entered Jazz’s head, Mr. Pickles tensed, looked around, then leaped from the chair and took off.

Jazz chuckled as his fluffy white tail disappeared around the corner.

Typical cat.

Looking around the room, Jazz put his hands on his knees. There was an accordian style floor to ceiling divider tucked behind a brocade curtain, doubtless used to shrink the big room for small services, which struck Jazz as sad. Or was it sadder to leave behind so many mourners that a funeral was standing room only? As he pondered that, he wondered how long Michael would be and hoped he wasn’t so engrossed in his work that he forgot about their date.

Voices in the hallway outside the display room door caught his attention.

“…very disturbing indeed.”

That was Michael’s voice.

Jazz stood up and moved toward the main hallway, not wanting to interrupt Michael with a client or appear to be lurking. The plush carpet absorbed the sound of his footsteps.

“Who in their right mind shoves rubbers full of heroin up their poop chute?”

Flinching, Jazz was startled to hear Sheriff Musgrave .

“That, I’m afraid, is a question for you,” Michael said, his voice closer now. “I simply provide you with the evidence.”

A split-second before Jazz was about to announce his presence, Michael walked past the open doors and glanced in, doing a double take.

“Jazz!” Michael cried. “What are you doing here?”

Okay, I loved this book, so let’s just start with that. Lately, I have been enjoying more mystery/suspense books, and when I saw this, I knew it was right up my alley…then they went and added a sassy cat, and there was no way I wasn’t reading this! Mr. Pickles Furryton the Third just made me happy, made me giggle, and made some bad people mad…all the things to love about a cat! Meanwhile, I loved the MC’s, too!

Michael, a shy, somewhat insecure, but very DIRTY, mortician/county coroner was fantastic. He had the most inappropriate thoughts at the most inappropriate times, and really…who doesn’t? This time we just got to read them. 🙂 But he was also sweet, and adored Jazz from minute one, despite Jazz having a little paunch, being (cough cough) slightly older, and at first glance, very different. He loved his cat very much, and wasn’t afraid to show tears when he couldn’t find him. And even was sweet to his grandpa.

Jazz, meanwhile, had a few hang-ups going in, but never lost sight of wanting Michael. He was definitely the more outgoing of the two (being a hairdresser in town) but always made sure that Michael wasn’t excluded. He took care of Michael when he needed the extra comfort, and made sure Michael knew that he was a priority.

The story itself…the authors created a mystery here that surprised me. (The one where the murderer is caught was VERY surprising…in several ways!). It wasn’t an easy who-dun-it, and that’s always fun. But honestly, even if I had known who the murderer was…I would still have read through. It was funny, engaging, had side characters that were just as enjoyable as the MC’s, and brought some serious heat in, as well. On top of all that, one thing that you rarely see in romance novels is multiple POV’s, behind the MC’s, but we got to see multiple POV’s, which created even more richness to the story, and the mystery. It isn’t confusing at all, because those POV’s come at an appropriate time in the book.

Just a fun, wonderful story, that I would read again…or even better…I want more!!! Give me 5 more of these books!!!! PLEASE!!!!!

Shadows Never Lie (Shadow Duet Book 1) by Lark TaylorMy review:Ok, going into this knowing that there is a book 2.....And I just have to start by saying I really appreciated that they are identical twins who don't get along. So often they are BFF and twin telepathy and all that. And it does happen. But not always.I have to admit I was sucked in from the start. Especially since the first chapter was present day and then chapter two starts the back story. Just from chapter 1 I wasn't expecting their younger years to be as they were. And I really wanted to hate Dominick. But once more information about his life came to light AND how he started treating Ryan, I had a soft spot for him. Max (Ryan's twin) on the other hand, can go scratch. It will take a lot for him to redeem himself in book 2 if that even happens.I kind of saw the cliffhanger coming. I still wasn't prepared. Oh my heart just broke. And I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! Good thing book 2 comes out in 2 weeks...4 pieces of eye candy ... See MoreSee Less

Avalanche (Ricochet Ridge) by Jillian Wray My reviewI really liked these two characters and how they aren't exactly what you expected.First, yes they are step brothers. But they are 4 years apart AND Stone left when he was 18. You can extrapolate that there wasn't even a crush between these two guys until this book. Hero worship, yes. Romantic crush, nah.Stone, kind of a hot shot on the mountain because he is part of the blasting crew who set charges to trigger avalanches when no one is on the mountain. He is obviously good looking and popular, but the outside doesn't necessarily match the inside. And Hanlon, babied his whole life because he has a mild case of cerebral palsy, but he also grew into a independent college senior who has a gym body, is confident, out and proud. The quiet kid grew into a confident adult and the confident kid turned into a quiet adult. There was animosity between the step brothers for different reasons. But once they pushed past that and they started feeling things, it got interesting.Again, role reversal of the stereotypical characters. And that made it so fun.It sucked that they basically had to stay in the closet. Because of family and because of work. But we all know that doesn't last forever. And I totally understand their parents feeling the way they do. But like good parents, they found acceptance in their hearts. The CP representation was done really well. Showed that there are different levels of CP and even when it isn't overtly obvious, there's still a lot that a person has to deal with.AND I learned more about avalanches.4 pieces of eye candy ...
