excerpt

Let me start by introducing myself. I am Fagan Swift, born and raised on a small farm in rural Iowa. Every morning I would have to get up to milk a cow or feed the chickens. Nothing ever happened in that boring little town, so I moved to this exciting place called New York City about nine months ago with my best friend Trinity. We’ve been friends since kindergarten and both hold the same opinion of our hometown. She developed a crush on me in the ninth grade, but alas, to her consternation and dismay, I’m gay. Yes, my name is unusual and I know you’re thinking ‘a fag named Fagan, how ludicrous’, but my mother wanted to name me after her grandfather, who raised her after her parents passed. And there was no possible way for her to know I would turn out to be gay. After I came out to my classmates, my given name certainly took on a whole new meaning for them.

Trinity eventually got over me and moved on. We are now roommates together in a small two-bedroom apartment overlooking a huge park.

They’re right about how this city never sleeps! You can hear sounds from every direction at any time of the night. The first night here, neither of us could sleep for all the noise, but now, nine months later, we don’t even hear it. I’m twenty-four years old with blonde shaggy hair that pisses me off all of the time because it’s always falling into my eyes. I constantly threaten to cut my hair off and Trinity constantly threatens to kick my ass. She says it looks sexier longer rather than shorter. I am six-foot-two and I have what Trinity dubs ‘foamy sea green’ eyes. My body is pretty much in shape from all the heavy hauling I used to do on the farm, and of course, tan from all the labor in the sun.

Like I said, I couldn’t take living in that small town anymore. Not only am I gay, but I also want to be an artist. My dad was pretty pissed off the day I told him I was going to the city and he has never really forgiven me for not wanting to be a farmer like him. Let me not even go there with the whole gay factor.

I am currently standing in the middle of the sidewalk in front of where I work. I can’t believe what I have been doing for the last six months. You would never guess in a million years what a farm boy like me does for a living. I work for an escort service! Don’t go freaking out just yet. My job isn’t one of those escort services you hear about, since I’m not required to have sex with the women that come through the agency. Some of the other escorts do by choice, but I had explained to the owner early on that I was gay and he’d been fine with it. Victor Harrison is the greatest boss I have ever had. He is breathtakingly gorgeous, but alas, straight.Swift's Tempation Square v1

The job had fallen into my lap. Literally! Six months ago, give or take a few days, I was sitting outside a small café enjoying my coffee and scanning the classifieds yet again. I had already had six different jobs but none of them suited me. I would either get fired or quit after a few weeks of being treated like shit. Anyway, my cup was sitting on the table while I was circling an ad with potential when there was loud barking. A man shouted and suddenly a dog was in my lap, coffee flying everywhere. I sat there stunned, looking at this two-ton gorilla sitting on me.

“What the hell!” I exclaimed just as the gorilla decided to clean the coffee off my face. I spluttered and gagged when its tongue accidentally slipped inside my mouth because my lips were open. Disgusting!

“Hercules! Get off of him! Now!”

The dog whined and leapt off my lap to sit beside me, wagging his tail. It was a huge Saint Bernard. In New York City! How inappropriate is that?

I looked up and suddenly found the most gorgeous man standing there with an apologetic expression on his face. “I’m so sorry. He gets excited sometimes, and tends to run away from me. I’m Victor Harrison.”

He was about an inch or so taller than me, with shoulder-length dark brown hair, wire-framed glasses, and gleaming bright blue eyes. I felt myself begin to drool and wiped my lips. “Fagan Swift. That’s all right. I’m kind of used to large animals.” I laughed and gestured for him to sit.

“At least let me buy you a cup of coffee to replace the one Hercules spilled,” Victor offered, motioning to the pretty waitress standing a few feet away.

“It’s fine. I was almost finished anyway.” I stood up with a sigh as I looked at my coffee splattered clothing and the newspaper on the table.

“Hercules, I oughta make a carpet out of you!” When Victor saw the classifieds sitting open on the table he asked, “Are you looking for a job?”

His eyes ran over my body in an intense perusal I could feel straight to my bones. Those blue eyes were sliding down my legs and back up again to my face. I almost fainted from the lust that shot through me. Down, boy, I barked at myself mentally. He’s probably straight.

“Well, yeah. Kind of. Why?” I raised a hand to brush my hair away from my eyes and then rub sheepishly at the back of my neck.

“I run a service that you look like you could be perfect for. Would you be interested?”

“That depends. What kind of service?” I was suspicious at first. You never know exactly what someone’s offering, especially after the way the guy checked me out.

“Why don’t you walk with me back to my office? I’ll explain it to you once we get there.” Victor handed the waitress a twenty and grabbed Hercules’ leash to lead him away. He stopped to smile back over his shoulder. “Come on.”

I trailed behind slightly, my eyes straying to the hard ass rippling beneath his slacks. I couldn’t help myself. He was made like a god! We walked for a few blocks while he asked me questions about why I had come to live in the city. I explained about the small town and how I just couldn’t take living there anymore with how isolated it felt. He understood, to my surprise, because he was also from a small town in South Dakota.

A few blocks later, we stood in front of a huge building with a sign at the top in big red letters stating, “Temptation”. My eyes widened as I took in the impressive structure before me. I looked at him questioningly and he motioned for me to follow him inside.

excerpt

Reaching across the empty bed next to me, I rode out the last waves of my dream alone. I could still feel his phantom kiss on my lips and the sensation of a hand stroking along my thigh.

The rest of it was just a blur of emotions and sticky residue on my sheets—though I could guess at it Banner300x250without much effort. FatBoy Newman had been a specter haunting me at work so it was no great leap to assume he’d shouldered his way into my dreams as well.

In fact, he was at the root of my problem: I’d been having a hell of a dry spell.

Four weeks of near misses had done nothing but stoke my bad mood and turn my balls a lovely shade of indigo that matched my jeans…

Four weeks of dashed hopes…

Four weeks since the most romantic kiss of my life…

Four weeks of nothing.

Fuck the South and its mythology of the Southern Gentleman—if FatBoy Newman didn’t stop treating me like a delicate flower and throw me up against a wall soon, I was going to explode.

It was six days until St. Patrick’s Day, and FatBoy had until then to make his move, or I was moving on.

synopsis

Trace is nursing a broken heart. He lost his job, his boyfriend of two years was cheating on him, and his apartment building burned right to the ground with all his worldly possessions.  It was time for Trace to get out of Minnesota.

So Trace heads for Texas and Riven Creek Ranch, the horse farm his aunt Lois owns. But hours before he arrives, Lois is in a terrible car accident that nearly takes her life, and Trace finds himself in charge of the ranch kitchen. Sounds simple enough and it’s the least he can do for his recuperating aunt.

Then Sawyer happens.

Sawyer is his aunt’s big, beautiful, muscle bound, incredibly sexy straight ranch manager. Someone who has no clue Trace is gay. And meeting the big man should have been okay, except it was in the middle of his aunt’s kitchen at five in the morning and Trace was nearly naked. Embarrassing? Yep. But the very next day Trace proceeded to ramp up his embarrassment by quantum leaps when he nearly sets his aunt’s house on fire and the brooding Sawyer has to come to the rescue.

Seems like Trace’s “luck” followed him.
Not to mention that Aunt Lois’s “accident” was actually attempted murder. And now, they just might want Trace dead, too.

Can Trace figure out who’s behind the attempts on his aunt’s life AND keep Sawyer from finding out he’s hot for the cowboy?

He probably can’t. But he’s going to try.

excerpt

“Sawyer!  Damn.  You scared me.”  Trace fell back against the freezer suddenly feeling light headed.  He took in the big body blocking any escape he had and his cock twitched as if it liked the idea there was no way out.  “I didn’t hear you… behind me.”

“I saw your car in the driveway.  How’s Lois?”

Trace shook his head in an attempt to clear it.  “She’s awake and very alert… but…”  But someone wants her dead.  Who?  Someone on this ranch?  Could it be Sawyer?  I trust him with my life… That’s what she said.

“But what?”960x350 (1)

Trace looked up into hard cold eyes.  The question was genuine.  He cared about the condition of his aunt.  But what condition did he care her to be in?  “Nothing… just… well… I guess you’re going to have to know… I mean…”  Damn, he had to stop acting like a horny teenager in front of this man.  “Let me… I’m going to make coffee…”

“It’s made.  The big insulated urn on the counter is full.  Just made it about a half hour ago so it’s fine.”

“Oh.  Good.  Let’s sit down.  I need to sit down.”  Trace took a few steps forward which brought him right in front of the cowboy.  He expected Sawyer to move, to back up, but he didn’t.  Then Trace did the unthinkable.  His body reacted on its own as he put his hand on the big man’s chest and pushed.  There would have been no way on God’s green earth he would have been able to physically move the cowboy without his express permission, not to mention help.  But Trace’s brain seemed to totally malfunction in this man’s presence.

And, as expected, being pushed in any direction was never going to work for Sawyer.  Sawyer grabbed his wrist, twisted it tight behind Trace, which brought Trace up solid, against Sawyer’s hard body, chest to chest.  Being several inches taller, Sawyer glared down into Trace’s shocked face, a smoldering look in his eyes.  Trace could feel Sawyer’s hot breath on his face, sense the man’s tense muscles from his pecs down through his thighs…

excerpt

Once again the man was leaning silently against the door frame, hands in his front pockets, head cocked to one side, staring at him with his eyes narrowed, as if he was trying to figure something out. The look made Trace wonder just how long he had been standing there.

Feeling totally naked, Trace pulled his too short of shirt down in front as if it would be able to hide his misbehaving, very attentive cock. He wouldn’t be able to hide his insane attraction to this man if he couldn’t get his cock to calm down. “What are you doing in here? I’m nearly naked!” Unfortunately Trace’s voice was more of a petrified screech than anything even close to outrage at the uninvited invasion into his bedroom.

“Well, it is pretty much how you introduced yourself to me in the first place. I don’t understand the problem.” the man drawled. “And I’m making sure you’re okay. You got burned because of me.” Sawyer nodded with his head toward Trace’s legs.

Trace looked down at the angry red splotches on his exposed thighs. “It’s nothing. I’m fine.”

But Sawyer was walking toward him. Trace watched those worn cowboy boots coming across the floor until they were right in front of him. Trace could do nothing but look up, fear stabbing his heart so hard he was amazed he didn’t pass out. Even if he could have managed to make his legs work under these circumstances, and with the way they were shaking right now that was highly doubtful, where the hell would he go half naked? Even so, somehow he needed to stop the man from doing anything they both would hugely regret him doing. Because big strong cowboys did not appreciate being lusted after by other men. “Wait! Don’t come in here! What the hell are you doing?” Yep, that’ll do it.

excerpt
At one point, when he was trying not to stare at the dancing, he spotted Liam across the room and they exchanged heated looks. Nate recalled the young guy bending over for him the last time he was here. Maybe he could get some more of that tonight. Maybe fucking Liam into the mattress would stop the irritating thought that he wanted to fuck Jay instead. Or that he wanted Jay to do the same thing to him.

Jeez.

Jay made it through three tracks of music, and when he made no sign of moving from his place alongside two men, Nate had to make a move. He sucked it up and joined the fray.

Nate was immediately swallowed into the crowd and instinctively began moving to the beat of the song as he walked closer. When he finally made it to Jay’s side, he patted him on the shoulder. Jay spun on his heel and Nate held out a hand to steady him.

“Cowboy!” Jay shouted over the music.

In a sinuous movement, Jay gripped one of Nate’s shoulders and shuffled closer so that very little separated them. The two men dancing with Jay drifted off to face other dancers, and suddenly it seemed like it was just Nate and Jay swaying to the music.

“You need to be careful!” Nate shouted close to his ear.

“Why?” Jay shouted back.

His breath smelled of beer and his body scent was a mix of the infuriating aftershave mingled with sweat and dust. Suddenly Jay became a four-course meal and Nate was very hungry.

“Keep your eyes open,” Nate warned.

As if to make that comment mean nothing, Jay deliberately closed his eyes and moved to the beat of the music. Somewhere along the line, Jay had lost his bottle of beer, or finished it, or whatever. He had both hands free, and he used them to steady himself by gripping hard to Nate’s shoulders. He had closed his eyes and was mouthing the words along with the song. Was he aware it was Nate holding him? He’d said “cowboy,” they’d spoken, but there were a lot of cowboys mixed in with the bikers and the other varied clientele.

“Open your eyes, Jay,” Nate shouted over the music.

Jay did as Nate had asked, and Nate was suddenly seeing brown eyes glazed with emotion. Then Jay smiled and closed his eyes again.

Instinctively Nate steadied Jay and that meant his hands rested on Jay’s hips. The feel of the man beneath his touch was intoxicating and Nate held hard. Jay fit into his arms perfectly: a little shorter, a little slimmer, just the right height, and his lips, damp with sweat or beer—Nate didn’t know—were what he zeroed in on. Jay swayed with the music. The move took them closer and fuck, Jay was hard. Nate gave in to the temptation and pressed them closer still until he was sure Jay could feel how hard he was as well.

All thoughts of impropriety or fears of rejection flew out the window. Nate was lost in the smile of pleasure that curved Jay’s damp lips. What would he taste like? Would Jay return the kiss? Would Jay push him away? How could he risk this? He eased his hold on Jay’s hips and slouched a little so that their groins aligned—suddenly they were frotting firmly and rhythmically to some Eminem mix. There was no way he could stop himself.

“Can I kiss you?” Nate said into Jay’s ear.

Jay smiled at him, but it wasn’t clear that he’d heard what Nate said. Hell, he should kiss Jay and stop all this delay in taking what he really wanted. Someone jostled him from behind and the movement threw him off his spiral of the pros and cons of denial. When the person who jostled them attempted to insinuate themselves between Nate and Jay, abruptly everything was clear.

“Fuck off,” Nate shouted clearly to the interloper, and in a quick move, he got his first taste of the sexy city boy. The press of his lips against Jay’s was intoxicating, and they kissed and swayed to the beat of the music. Their hard cocks pressed together and—finally—the kiss deepened. Jay let him in and Nate took every advantage. Fuck the fact Jay worked for the ranch, fuck that they had absolutely zero in common, forget that Jay had a degree and a life that would take him far away from Nate’s world sometime soon.

excerpt
Jackson McAllen – Unit D
After spending several hours at the university’s library studying for my forensic psychology test next week, I drive away from the campus, anxious to get into my apartment and warm bed. Though I love the class, the amount of required reading has kept me very busy.
Thankfully, I don’t have any classes on Fridays this semester, so I can sleep in tomorrow. I’ll need the rest for Saturday’s tennis match. The new coach doesn’t believe in canceling no matter the weather. I really hope the forecast for the weekend is correct. We’re supposed to have clear skies and temperatures in the sixties. That will be a relief since this entire week has been so cold, especially today, which is the coldest.
The car is registering the outside temperature at ten degrees below freezing. It gives me a chill just looking at it.
I pull into my parking space at Mockingbird Place, my home sweet home. Bracing myself to face the cold, I open my car door and immediately smell smoke.
I look around and see where it’s coming from. Shit. It’s Eli’s apartment.
God, I hope he’s at the fire station working and not inside.
I call 9-1-1.
The dispatcher answers, “9-1-1. What’s your emergency?”
“I’m reporting a fire at Mockingbird Place.” I give her the address. “Unit C. I’m going to run to the door and make sure no one is inside.”
“Sir, for your safety you need to wait until the fire department gets there,” she says in a stern voice.
As I’m running, I tell her, “No way am I waiting.” At Eli’s door, I try to turn the knob. It’s locked. I pound as hard as I can. “Eli! Eli! Are you in there?”
My neighbors come out of their apartments. More smoke billows out the front window. I see that it’s broken. This could be arson. That realization multiplies my worry. Where the hell are you, Eli?
“I know I’m not supposed to hang up on you, ma’am, but I have to call my friend to make sure he’s okay.” Not waiting for her to respond, I click off of 9-1-1 and call Eli’s phone.
Sirens begin to wail in the distance.
Fuck. No answer.
Out of the corner of my eye I see something move. Hoping that it’s Eli, I turn and see the white stray cat that we’ve all adopted running down the sidewalk.
I knock even louder. “Eli!”
Suddenly, the door opens, releasing a massive amount of smoke. Eli rushes out with a towel around his waist and another covering his mouth.
“Eli, are you okay?”
Coughing, he puts his arms around me. “Yes, I am.”
I’m overwhelmed with relief that he is safe, but I’m feeling so much more that I can’t explain. There’s no time to sort out these thoughts right now.
Eli coughs a few more times and then his demeanor goes into fireman mode. “Jackson, we need to step away from the building. It’s too dangerous. Please help me get everyone back.” He doesn’t wait for me but begins lifting his hands and motioning everyone to the other side of the pool. Following his lead, I do the same, directing our neighbors away from the fire.
Once he’s satisfied that everyone is safely away from the blaze, I take off my coat and give it to him. Then he and I run around to the back of Mockingbird Place and meet a fire truck, an ambulance, and a police car, which are pulling into the parking lot next to our units.
The firemen jump out and get to work like a well-oiled machine, pulling out the hoses and other equipment.
Still coughing, Eli steps over to the man in charge, who is broad shouldered with salt and pepper hair.
“Grayson? What the hell are you doing here wrapped in a towel?” the man asks.
“It’s my place, Captain,” Eli chokes out. “I was in the shower when I heard glass breaking and smelled gasoline. I ran downstairs and saw my sofa and curtains go up in flames. I grabbed my fire extinguisher from under the kitchen sink and tried to put out the blaze but it was already out of control.”
“Damn arsonists. This is the fifth fire we’ve had to deal with in the past two weeks.”
I curl my hands into fists, angry about the attacks on gays that have occurred in the area. First it started out as bashing. Eleven LGBT people ended up in the hospital. After the police increased their presence down on Cedar Springs, that’s when small apartment complexes around the area, like ours, were set on fire. Although there has been no evidence connecting the bashings to the arsons, the entire community is on edge.
The captain motions to the EMTs to come over. “He’s one of ours. Inhaled some smoke. Take good care of him.” He turns to Eli. “We are getting this under control. You know the drill. Stay put.”
“Yes, sir.”
As the EMTs give Eli oxygen and provide him blankets, the captain and his team put out the blaze.
“I’m fine, fellas.” Eli seems far from fine to me, at least not emotionally, which is no surprise considering all he’s gone through.
Even so, he’s still the perfect example of male beauty. He’s six-foot-one, just like me. Muscles for days. Piercing blue eyes. Thick, dark hair. Just like the old cliché says—tall, dark, and handsome. He looks like a very strong, tough guy, but still, who would be fine after their home caught on fire? I hate that this has happened to him.
A little while later, the captain walks over to us. “Eli, the good news is we were able to keep the fire from spreading to your second floor. The bad news is everything in your living room is toast. And you know the kind of water damage you’re going to have to deal with.”
“Yes, sir.” He sighs. “And the smoke damage too. The adjoining unit has a couple who are expecting a baby. I’m going to need help finding them a place to stay. Lashaya can’t take a chance breathing in the residual smoke.”
“You may be jumping the gun,” I tell him. I know how terrific a guy Eli is—always concerned about everyone else more than himself. “There might not be any smoke in their place. If there is, we’ll all work on getting them settled until it’s safe for her to return to their apartment.”
He nods. “I’m just glad no one got hurt.”
“We did find the remains of what looks to be a Molotov cocktail in the middle of your apartment,” the captain says. “Before you can get inside the investigators will have to go over your place first.”
Eli closes his eyes. “Maybe they’ll find a clue to who did this.”
Of course he’s still struggling with what has happened. Who wouldn’t be?
“I’m sorry but you’re not going to be able to stay here.” The captain puts his arm around him. “You can stay at the station until this gets all sorted out. I know it might be hard to get much rest but at least you’ll have a clean bed and a shower.”
Everything inside me wants to help Eli. “Why don’t you stay with me? I have the extra bedroom now that Trace is living with Luke, Ava, and the baby. And you and I are about the same size. I have plenty of clothes you can wear.” I don’t want him to think I’m only offering as a gesture of charity, so I add, “And quite frankly, I could use the company. I’ve been a little lonely since Trace moved out.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course I am. The first thing we need to do is get you out of the cold.”
He shakes his head. “I’d rather stay here until the fire is completely out.”
Knowing I would feel the same way if it were my place on fire, I nod. “Okay. But I’m going to get something for your bare feet. I’ll be right back.”
I run into my place and up the stairs. I pull out a pair of slippers from my closet.
As I rush back to Eli, I see the fire is already under control. The captain is talking with two police officers, a male and female. I also spot Sarah and Martha, who we lovingly call S & M, giving the firemen coffee and hot chocolate.
I hand the slippers to Eli. “I hope these fit you.”
“My feet feel like icicles. Thanks, Jackson.” Putting them on, he smiles. “Perfect, buddy. Already feel better. But let me give your coat back. You must be freezing too.”
I was so concerned with getting him the slippers I didn’t think about grabbing a coat for myself. “I’m fine. Keep it, Eli.”
The captain leads the police officers to us. “This is Eli Grayson. Eli, they have a few questions they need to ask you.”
“I’m Detective Soliz,” the female officer says, and then motions to her partner. “And this is Detective Morrison.”
I recall what the outside temperature registered on my car earlier. Ten degrees below freezing. “Officers, I know you have to ask him questions but could we please go inside my place so he can warm up?” I point to my back door. “I live next door to him.”
Soliz nods. “Of course. Lead the way.”
Once we’re all settled into my apartment, I turn up the heat and put on a pot of coffee. I wish my friend Detective Derek Stone could take Eli’s statement. But Derek only works homicides.
“Mr. Grayson, I understand Captain Murphy told you about his suspicions that this could be arson,” Soliz says.
“Yes he did.”
“Do you have any idea who might have done this?”
“No. I don’t have any enemies that I know of.”
Morrison asks, “Have you had an argument with anyone recently?”
Eli shrugs. “I did have an argument with my friend Scott a couple of days ago, but that’s not unusual. We’ve been arguing with each other since I kicked him out, but I’m certain Scott’s not capable of this.”
Of course the bastard is capable of this and so much more. Why can’t Eli see the guy for who he truly is?
Soliz looks directly at Eli. “What were you arguing about, Mr. Grayson?”
“Same old thing. He wants me to forgive him and take him back.”
We all know the asshole cheated on him, even if Eli has never said so. I saw Scott making out with a guy at a club when he was still living with Eli. And despite Eli breaking it off with the bastard and kicking him out, the creep somehow is able to make Eli feel sorry for him.
I bring out a tray with coffee, cups, cream, and sugar. “Officers, would you like some coffee? It’s freezing out there.”
“I sure would,” Morrison says.
Soliz smiles. “Me, too. Thank you.”
“What about you, Eli?” I ask him.
“Please. I’m still cold.”
After taking a sip of coffee, Soliz turns back to Eli. “What’s your friend’s full name, Mr. Grayson?”
“Scott Foster.”
“Do you have his address and phone number?” she asks.
“I do. In my cell.” Eli frowns. “Oh shit. It was on the table next to my sofa. Um…Scott lives in a condo on Cedar Springs not far from Oak Lawn. I think they’re called Whispering Pines.”
“Whispering Pines?” I’m stunned. “Those are really nice.”
“Where does Mr. Foster work?” Soliz asks Eli.
“He just started working part time at the 7-Eleven on Lemmon a couple of weeks ago.”
I wonder how in the hell his ex can afford to live in an upscale condo. Is Eli subsidizing him?
Eli takes a sip of his coffee. “But like I said before, Scott isn’t capable of such a crime.”
“But he certainly is a big jerk,” I blurt out and immediately wish I could take it back. “Sorry, Eli. You know none of us here like Scott after all he did to you.”
“What is your name?” Soliz asks me.
Damn it. I should have kept my mouth shut. “Jackson McAllen.
“What can you tell us about Mr. Foster?”
“I don’t really know him. I only saw him a few times when he and Eli were still together.”
She leans forward. “And?”
“And I don’t care for him.”
“Can you elaborate?” Morrison asks in a I-mean-business-so-don’t-try-to-bullshit-me tone.
“I’ve seen him throw a drink in Eli’s face, scream at Eli at a club, and throw Eli’s clothes in the pool.” Rage rolls up inside me. Why can’t Eli see his ex is a useless piece of shit? “Scott Foster is a total asshole.”
Soliz glances at her partner and then turns back to me. “Are you and Mr. Grayson dating now?”
“No, we are not,” Eli jumps in. “Jackson and I are only friends.”
His words sting me. “Right. Just friends.”
“I don’t understand why you’re wasting time, officers,” Eli says. “Stop trying to pin this on Scott. I told you, he’s not capable of this.”
The male officer’s eyebrows rise. “Have you heard the saying from Hamlet ‘The lady doth protest too much, methinks’?”
Is Morrison referring to Eli’s ex being the arsonist or that Eli and I should be together? God, I wish Eli and I could be more than friends. I like him. I like him a lot. But he and I wouldn’t work. His life is too complicated and messy for me. Blame it on my OCD. I must have things simple and orderly.

Cover Reveal: Big Love by Rick R. Reed Includes Excerpt and Giveaway

March 6, 2016 by Denise

We are so excited at TCO to have Rick R. Reed’s Cover Reveal today! So, check out the excerpt, and gorgeous cover, by the amazing cover artist Reese Dante.

Thanks for stopping by today for my cover reveal for my April 4 release from Dreamspinner Press! Cover artist Reese Dante did an awesome job putting a gorgeous face on my story, don’t you think? I couldn’t be happier, because BIG LOVE is one of the books I’m most proud of. It combines coming out, high school angst, bullying, and, most importantly, being true to yourself in one tear- and laughter-inducing package. I hope you’ll read it and take it to your heart. Officially, it releases on April 4, but you can pre-order your copy now from Dreamspinner at the links in this post.

synopsis

Teacher Dane Bernard is a gentle giant, loved by all at Summitville High School. He has a beautiful wife, two kids, and an easy rapport with staff and students alike. But Dane has a secret, one he expects to keep hidden for the rest of his life—he’s gay.

But when he loses his wife, Dane finally confronts his attraction to men. And a new teacher, Seth Wolcott, immediately catches his eye. Seth himself is starting over, licking his wounds from a breakup. The last thing Seth wants is another relationship–but when he spies Dane on his first day at Summitville High, his attraction is immediate and electric.

As the two man enter into a dance of discovery and new love, they’re called upon to come to the aid of bullied gay student Truman Reid. Truman is out and proud, which not everyone at his small town high school approves of. As the two men work with Truman to not listen to the bullies and to love himself without reservation, they all learn life-changing lessons about coming out, coming to terms, acceptance, heartbreak, and falling in love.

excerpt

Seth gathered up his messenger bag from the passenger seat to go inside and stopped when a man passing his car caught his eye. Seth’s breath froze in his mouth. If he’d been asked, even seconds ago, if any man could “catch his eye” in his current state of loss and betrayal, Seth would have said “Get out of here!” and meant it.

But the libido and the roving eye of a relatively young man were not as unforgiving as the heart. Eye and libido still had their needs despite a smashed heart, Seth thought, staring at the stranger in the navy blue coat as he passed by Seth’s Leaf. Seth took in the broad shoulders, the proud bearing, and the shaved head that said, in no uncertain terms, that a real man was passing by.

Seth was surprised at the pulse of longing and electricity that coursed though him at just a glimpse of this stranger, who must also be on the faculty, because Seth would have judged him at least a few years older than himself.

And he was gorgeous! First, it was just his sheer size, his magnitude that caused Seth’s pulse to quicken. Seth liked ’em big, he always had, and this guy was a giant. He must have been around six feet six inches and was, as they said in the ads, HWP, or height and weight proportionate. What? Two hundred? Two twenty? No matter. Seth’s fickle lust could only imagine what all that height and weight would feel like spread out on top of him. A man blanket. The mind reeled.

Shame on you, Seth Wolcott! his conscious mind admonished in the voice of Dana Carvey’s Church Lady. In that same superego-inspired voice, Seth asked, “What’s gotten into you? Satan?” And he answered, ignoring the reference to Satan, “I don’t know, but I know what I’d like to get into me.”

Seth shook his head and permitted his sad-sack self an indulgent grin. He pulled his messenger bag on his lap to both get himself going and to hide the burgeoning erection in his jeans. Just as he was about to open the door, the giant turned his head to look at a colleague coming up the front walk, and it was his face that really sealed the deal. That face, so angular, so manly, so kind, caused Cupid to release his arrow from its bow. “It’s hopeless!” Seth wailed. “I haven’t even gotten out of the car yet on my very first day, and already my heart has been stolen.” His erection, growing ever harder, reminded him that, in all actuality, another organ was the object of thievery.

But the guy was beautiful, the kind of man Seth’s fantasies would conjure up and file under the word perfection. Seth admonished himself in a whispering voice, hoping no one saw his lips moving, “He’s probably the wrestling—or no, the football—coach and is as straight as they come. Let’s not sentence ourselves to unrequited pining on our first day! Get out of the fuckin’ car and be a professional, not one of those adolescent boys you are about to teach—ones whose hormones are in overdrive.”

The wind, despite the snow dribbling down to a few spotty flakes, was bitter when Seth opened his door. He watched as his giant went inside the school and wondered if he’d have the chance to meet him today. Seth hurried up the walk. He had an appointment with the principal, Doug Calhoun, first thing, and he didn’t want to be late.

Just as he neared the door, the giant turned, as if he felt Seth’s rapt gaze upon him. Or maybe he had—what was the word?—a presentiment that Seth was about to do something righteously embarrassing and hysterical.

And perhaps because Seth worried about making an ass out of himself in front of this man he found gorgeous, he did precisely that. The universe, once again laser-focused on Seth, caused his right foot to come down on a patch of ice cunningly hidden in a shadow cast by Summitville High. His foot went dramatically forward, extending so much it called to Seth’s mind an old Monty Python sketch, “The Ministry of Silly Walks.” Right leg extended beyond what was natural, Seth crumpled to one knee, a silly grin barely masking his pain. He tried to grab his messenger bag to keep it off the wet ground and succeeded in somehow flipping his body down so that he did a cheek plant on the asphalt. His glasses skittered across yet another unseen patch of ice.

He lay on the ground gasping, wishing that blizzard-like snow would return and mercifully bury him. Wasn’t there some way he could just make himself melt into the ground, a la the Wicked Witch of the West?

Alas, real life did not offer him any such flights of fancy. Seth felt a strong pair of hands on his shoulders, gently pulling him up. He didn’t have to look to know whose they were. And as much as he wanted to meet this man he’d just rhapsodized over in the car, he was now recalling the old adage, “Be careful what you wish for.” He didn’t care. He wished again—wished that he’d look up and someone else would come to his aid. Perhaps a nice middle-aged algebra teacher, the water polo team coach, perhaps? Or maybe a student who wanted to brownnose the new teacher.

Of course, the universe could have none of that. It was none other than the object of Seth’s lust tugging him kindly upright again. Seth looked into his eyes—blue as that patch of sky he’d seen emerge earlier—and tried to smile, but it was damned hard to do when his face was burning so fiercely Seth was surprised it didn’t melt the snow for miles around.

Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less
