I grabbed this one, because I was intrigued by book 2 which comes out Sunday, Send Lawyers, Guns and Roses, and it appeared that there was going to be some necessary information, that it would not be stand alone. And I was correct. I’m glad that I had the background of book 1 to get me into book 2.

The first 40% or so of this book is told from Hunter’s POV. He has a crush on Shawn, meanwhile Shawn won’t date him, then he will, then he won’t. It’s a bit of a push and pull, that of course ends with them falling in love. After that 40% we learn how Shawn (soon to be known as Alex) ended up in the situation he was in, on the run, fake identity, with an FBI agent trying to kill him.

The story is convoluted, to say the least, and you don’t always know who the good guys are, or who will come out of the woodwork to try to do some damage. I do like a suspense story that weaves in and out. The trip “north” is kind of hilarious how to goes down, I will say that.

I think my biggest issue with the book was these two men were a hot mess, and trying to fall in love while dealing with all that was going on seemed a little too surreal. They really hadn’t known each other long before they started dating/not dating, then Shawn was on the run for a while, and then Nick came to find Hunter. In addition, I will say I was very confused at Shawn heading to Florida, then suddenly delivering a letter directly to Hunter in Mass. That seemed like a huge timeline issue to me.

Overall though, suspense well done, and I could see the upcoming issues for book 2, and looking forward to how they settle themselves into a relationship.

“So what do you do in that big house next door all by yourself?” Bo asked, spreading mustard on a couple slices of bread. “Besides garden, I mean. How’d it go with the magazine people this morning, anyway? Sounded like it went well from my side of the fence.”

“It did,” Sam said. “They’ll be back next week with a writer to interview me. Though I don’t know why. I’m not all that interesting.”

Bo took in Sam’s perfect hair, the neat beard, the broad shoulders, rough hands, tapered waist…and begged to differ.

“Besides,” Sam continued, “I’m no gardening expert. It’s just a hobby. They’d be better off interviewing a horticulturist.”

“Maybe it’s for some kind of mini bio?” Bo finished assembling the sandwiches and plated them. Taking a container of pre-cut veggies out of the fridge, he added a few to the plates, then handed one to Sam.

“Thank you,” Sam said. “They’ll also be coming with a camera crew next week to photograph the garden.”

Bo grunted. “I’ll make sure my chickens stay on this side of the fence.”

Sam winced. Bo had meant it as a joke; clearly it fell flat. Not knowing what to say, he took a bite of his sandwich.

Sam finished chewing and nodded at something on the island. “You read that one yet?”

That was volume three of a popular yaoi series. Bo was slowly making his way through it.

“I’m about halfway through.” Bo munched on a celery stick. “I like it but…I like a little paranormal in my manga.”

Sam polished off his veggies. “Me too. What’s your favourite?”

“It’s not manga but…Scythe and Swords.” Scythe and Swords was about a married demon-fighting duo. James and Elliot were sickeningly cute ass kickers who could behead a demon, praise each other’s fighting skills, and make out like relieved, horny teenagers while covered in icky demon gore, all within the span of five seconds.

Sam’s eyebrows went up. “The web comic?”

He sounded so surprised that Bo’s hackles went up. “Something wrong with web comics? Just because they’re not traditionally published doesn’t mean they’re not as good. That’s like saying books published in e-form only aren’t as good as what you can find on the shelves.”

Sam lifted both hands. “Whoa. I didn’t say that. I was just surprised. I’ve never met anyone outside of online and cons who have ever heard of it.”

Oh. Well, didn’t Bo feel like an idiot? It wasn’t an unfamiliar feeling. Laura always said he was too quick to react.

“Have you read the latest chapter?” Sam asked.

“Yeah. And holy shit did it take a turn I wasn’t expecting! Can you believe—wait.” Bo stopped himself from vomiting any spoilers. “Have you read it?”

Sam nodded, mouth full of food, giving Bo permission to continue. “First of all, I almost stopped reading when Elliot got killed off. It was only S.P. McAuley’s promise that we hadn’t seen the last of him that made me keep reading. And second? I didn’t expect Elliot to still be alive. I thought he’d be coming back as a ghost or something. Oh, and third…” Bo kept rambling, mostly to keep himself distracted from the slight smile that had reappeared on Sam’s face.

They chatted comics for the better part of an hour, until well after they’d both finished their sandwiches. It wasn’t until Sam pushed his empty plate away and stood that Bo remembered he had something for him.

“Don’t go anywhere,” he told Sam, and headed upstairs to the guest room he’d claimed as his own. He came down with a few comics and a graphic novel. “Um…” Suddenly embarrassed, he shifted from foot to foot. “Laura mentioned that you’re into comics, so I, uh, brought you some of mine. In case you’d like to read them.” He thrust them at Sam, forcing him to take them.

Sam’s smile was crooked. “Thanks. Although…” He handed two back to Bo. “I have these ones.” The first two volumes of Scythe and Swords. Bo had received them as part of S.P. McAuley’s Kickstarter campaign a few months ago. “Anyway, thank you for lunch. I have to go feed Tripaw before he starts eating my shoes.”

“Tripaw?”

“My cat,” Sam said, tucking the comics under one arm. “Like tripod. Because he only has three legs?”

“No, I get it.” Bo grinned. “You named your cat after the one in Scythe and Swords?”

Sam’s cheeks pinked.

I liked this book. It had a good, not quite insta-love, romance, with a bit of conflict, but overall was sweet.

My main issue was that Bo was very unlikable to me at the beginning. He was rude, mean, and honestly, an a**hole, with no real reason for being such. I get that the sister may have played a part in how Sam reacted to Bo’s initial appearance, but it just wasn’t a good enough excuse for me to have that reaction, and for Bo to basically fall in lust immediately despite that. About 40% in, once I saw that Sam was seeing all the issues Bo had to deal with, I was able to “forgive” Sam, but it stuck with me for quite a bit.

Bo just couldn’t catch a break. His parents were flakes to an extreme degree. His sister had some sort of mental block to all the ways he had helped her over the years, and so thought he was a flake. Then when he was there helping, things didn’t quite go to plan. He never gave up though, and kept trying, hoping to find that niche that was all his.

I did really like how the two worked well together, as they started to find what was right for them, how they could make their lives together, etc. Sam bringing Bo to see his parents, just to enjoy the horses, etc really was a good stepping stone, and helped bring their relationship that much closer. I loved Sam’s family, too. They were all in. 🙂

When a removal van finally arrived in the first week of summer, Liam’s hopes that his quiet existence would continue undisturbed were dashed.

He’d never regarded himself as a curtain twitcher before, but he found himself peering out of his bedroom window as three burly men unloaded the large van. The furniture didn’t scream ‘quiet retired couple’ to him. It was too modern, too loud. Who on earth owned a bright purple sofa, for crying out loud? The bed was even worse. It was a huge monstrosity, easily king-sized, and Liam couldn’t help but feel sorry for the men carrying it into the house. The bed frame was black, probably made of leather, judging by the way the sunlight made the fabric shine, with a massive surround, part of which looked like some kind of lounge chair. Did it even have a built-in speaker? Who needed a built-in speaker in their bed?

His jaw dropped a little more at every item of furniture that was brought into the house. The coffee table looked like it doubled as an aquarium, although thankfully there were no fish in it. There was a bookcase in the shape of a dog, a dining table with what looked like a solid marble top, overstuffed dining chairs, a pool table, and even a bar!

The painting was the last straw.

The canvas and frame combined must have been six feet tall, making the man that had been painted upon it almost life size. Not only was he nude, but he was grasping his cock, his head tilted back slightly, eyes closed, making it obvious that he was in the midst of pleasuring himself. Liam had never been so glad to have no other neighbours. The painting was glorious—he had to adjust himself to make his aching cock more comfortable in his pants—but why in God’s name hadn’t it been covered up? Clearly, his new neighbour had no decorum whatsoever.

If you are looking for a light hearted take on BDSM and a Daddy/boy relationship- this is it. In fact, maybe this would be a good starter book for someone interested in these tropes. Because this was just about as vanilla as this could get while still being called kink.

And listen, that is fine. As long as you know what you are getting into. It definitely started out with promise of serious kink.

Ex cop living on one side of a semi detached house. Super meticulous. Loner. Lives by rules, schedules and order.

B or C list actor buys the other side as he is taking a break from Hollywood. He is young, was a child actor previously and has basically done whatever he has wanted most of his life. He is a SUPER happy guy and loves to push the buttons of his grouchy neighbor.

A bratty boy, a grouchy Daddy, and a puppy. For real a puppy, not a kink puppy. 😉

It was a bit too insta love and a bit too vanilla, but it was a cute book. Definitely readable, but it wasn’t very meaty.

Nathan is homeless. As a result of that, he makes what little money he can by prostituting. You see a little of that on page in the beginning, so if you don’t like that, you might skip this one. It was kind of a turn off to me, I’ll admit. However, he also likes Daddy kink, which gets him in trouble when he’s particularly into one of his hookups and it leaves him with a concussion and unconscious in an alley and that’s where Loren finds him.

Loren is an accountant and thinks that he’ll never find his boy. I’m not sure how far into the kink he was looking to go, but he seemed like a Daddy, type Daddy.. I was looking forward to that. Hot, right?
So, when he picks up a prostitute off the dirty alleyway and brings him home with him, I was hopeful that he and Nathan could help each other out.

However, everything tended to go at warp speed, which I understand that people in the kink community tend to do when they find someone that shares their same kink, but Loren picked up a prostitute and not only brought him into his home but gave him a key to his house the next morning. A complete stranger. I don’t care what kind of Barney Rubble town you live in, you do not give a stranger your house key and be like, hey, I know you’re a homeless prostitute with two friends you look after, but here, welcome to my home. I’m not at all worried about you stealing my things or trashing my house. Go nuts!

Then he walks in on him watching Daddy stuff and that starts their relationship, right then and there. And again, it’s my experience that when you have a specified kink, it’s better to just jump right in and see if you’re compatible. I understand that, but they went from hi, how are ya, to living together and in a committed relationship, complete with the kink and there was zero trust issues and all the dirty times and I’m over here like…. Are we gonna get tested? Should we exchange last names? Maybe go on a date or something first? No, it didn’t seem like we were.

It just didn’t feel genuine to me. Nathan called him Daddy every three seconds and let Loren do everything for him and once he colored him a picture, but that’s as far as the Daddy/boy thing went as far as I could tell. I dunno…. Maybe because it’s a short story I just didn’t feel the connection between the two, or maybe because it all happened at warp speed, I’m not sure. Maybe I’ll revisit it later and feel differently, but there was just too many things that made it unrealistic to me. Illogical, maybe. I’m still tripped up on finding an unconscious sex worker on the street and then giving him a key to your house all willy nilly, like it’s not such a dangerous thing to do.

Anyway, I did enjoy the hot cover and I always appreciate a sweet happily ever after.

Emotion moved across the Swede’s face, something wistful. Something stronger. Magnusson was strangely intense when he was drunk. It made Neil nervous, as though anything could happen, good or bad.

Then Magnusson grinned, and the tension snapped.

“I’m glad you yakked today, Shannon.”

Neil sighed, his arousal deflating. “Bite me, Magnusson.”

“Don’t say something like that around a Swedish lion.” Magnusson abruptly stood up and strode to the bathroom. “I’m going to shower.”

He left the door open and Neil could see him clearly in the mirror’s reflection, clumsily undressing. Neil opened his mouth to yell at him to shut the door. But then the tight yellow dress shirt came off, and the undershirt beneath it—and Neil forgot what he was going to say.

Damn, he’s built. He stared openly, unable to look away as the other man struggled with his tight pants until he finally managed to yank and kick his way free of them. His thighs were indeed tree trunks, his calves chiseled. And his ass—Magnusson wore a thong beneath his pants. Neil choked.

Magnusson heard him. His blue eyes flashed up to the mirror, wide with shock. He hadn’t realized Neil could see him. But instead of blushing as Neil expected, Magnusson’s expression grew intent again. Holding Neil’s captive gaze, he reached back and slapped himself loudly on one ass cheek.

I’m not a big hockey fan, but I am a sports fan, which is why I wanted to give this a shot. There is A LOT of hockey in it. So much so, that I feel like we hardly got to know Neil and Adrian as a couple.

Ok, so hockey rivals. Fun, right? Normally. Except the book starts with game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. In which Neil’s season ends because of injury. So there wasn’t much rivalry at all.

After recovering from his season ending injuries, he is a bit wary on the ice. And unbeknownst to him, gets traded to another team because his rival wanted him there. Because he knows that he is a great player.

But Neil is MAD. And Adrian just kind of blows off his anger. He acts like he did Neil this giant favor, because together they are unstoppable. Neil certainly doesn’t see it that way.

Oh, they are both gay and both in the closet. Although Adrian doesn’t seem to be overly concerned about being outed, Neil does. So after a hot hook up, Neil tries to blow him off. More hockey, more hockey, more hockey.

And then we get a happily for now. WHA? There was no substance to their brief relationship at all. They had heat, but I definitely didn’t feel any feelings between them. Oh, but there is an epilogue! Redemption? No. The epilogue was just the next day or so. Nothing about how they navigated their relationship in the closet, or if one or both came out or got outed or if others kept their secret, or or or…

It was a readable book and I was mostly enjoying it, but there was no couple substance there. And the happily for now seemed like a total cop out.

Preston finally held my card out, but didn’t release it when I reached for it. “Not so fast, boo. “Moderator? And who will that be?” Preston looked irritated when I interrupted, but I wasn’t sure I needed my interactions to be judged.

Preston rolled his eyes. “We discussed it, remember? Pay attention, sweetie. Our regulars have volunteered to act as moderators. They aren’t there to interact, so just ignore them. They will take each of your cards and rate your three-minute date. At the end of the event, we’ll look through everyone’s cards and match couples according to those ratings. You’ll have the same moderator, because you won’t change tables. So I’d suggest picking someone you like before you choose their table. When the bell rings, the boy will move on to his next date while a new one will take the seat in front of you.”

When he finally let go of the card, I frowned at it for a second. “No wonder I didn’t know what was going on, that sounds complicated. I probably zoned out during our planning sessions.”

“Right? You did seem to get distracted easily, now that I think about it.” Preston paused and smiled kindly. “Relax, Davey. The only thing different about tonight is the length of the date and the side of the table you’re sitting on. Remember to keep an open mind and have fun. Besides, didn’t I see Sammy walk in with you? If he’s doing the mixer, at least you know you’ll have a three-minute break to bitch at your bestie about what I’m putting you through.” He paused to waggle his eyebrows. “Unless maybe you’d prefer to make better use of those three minutes and explore the chemistry everybody sees between the two of you.”

Okay, so while it’s true I’ve only discovered this series this week, I was so excited to see that Sammy gets another chance at happy because he deserved it so much. It broke my heart when he lost Raph, so I was just waiting, hoping for something amazing.

Then Davey… it’s hard to find words for him. He’s one of a kind, that’s for sure. Determined to find his own Daddy, we’ve gone through this whole series with the hopes that he’ll eventually find him by the end, right? …. Didn’t quite go down like that, did it? Though I’m so happy that within finding himself, he did it with his best friend and beautiful soul, Sammy.
I loved seeing him step up and help Sammy raise his little family. I adored their friendship and I feel like it’s exactly what they both needed, to give Sammy time to grieve and to learn to be okay with moving on and finding love again. He’d been with him since the very beginning and it was perfect.

The only thing that I didn’t quite understand, is that Davey has run a kink club for what, 10-15 years now? And he doesn’t understand the logistics of the different kinks? How? I only know what I read in books like these, and you’re telling me that he thought that big guys were tops and little guys were bottoms and alllll kinds of other stereotypes that are so ridiculous that I’m like, what?

Davey, who was probably as open-minded as they came and had claimed to have seen every kink in the entire world, especially at his club, and had never seen a leather Daddy be a bottom, or the big jock guy be a bottom or a big guy like Sammy, be submissive??? Never? I found that so incredibly hard to believe and his ignorance on the matter was just…. Not right. I don’t know how to explain it, it threw me for a loop. Annnnnnd, while everyone else saw Davey and Sammy as a couple, it never, in all the years, occurred to them that they loved each other? But once they opened their eyes to it, it was like, oh yeah, and they jumped right in? I just didn’t buy it.

Another thing that bothered me was Samantha Jade… that girl, at 12 had one of the world’s worst attitudes, she was a disrespectful, BRAT… one that could’ve given the old Preston a run for his money. Now, I have a 14 and a 15 year old, so I’m not one of those parents that shame other parents, or one of those people with no children trying to tell other people how to parent… but OMG, how can you be so good at disciplining Sammy, but Samatha Jade? That girl deserved a smack in the mouth MORE than once, and she’d have been grounded for about a year, had she been my daughter for sneaking out in the middle of the night at TWELVE…. Wow….

Aside from those two things, I did love seeing Sammy and Davey give each other a try. Not only was it extremely hot seeing Davey flip flop and switch up to a Daddy, though I did have to try to forget how he was in all the other books because seeing him as a Daddy was just…. Weird after 7 books of seeing him as a boy. Diva Daddy also didn’t quite work for me, but… to each their own, I reckon.

I dunno, I hate to be so prickly about it, because I was so so excited for this story, and in a lot of ways, it really worked for me, but in other ways, it just really didn’t. I’m on the fence. I also really hoped to see something great happen with Ethan, though I was glad that Davey helped him, I wouldn’t mind seeing him get a story, whether a spin-off or whatever, I bet he’d be so cute!
So, while this one didn’t work for me as well as the other ones did, I will say that I’m glad that they both got their HEA, I really did adore Sammy so much. ♡

As an avid reader and big romance fan myself, I love sharing the stories of the different people who live in my imagination.
