synopsis

Shiver me timbers! When Professor Wesley Coolidge accepts a summer job as a historical consultant to a pirate movie being filmed in North Carolina, the last person he expects to bump into is his soon-to-be-ex-husband, movie star Sander Carson. Just like the flamboyant pirate he’s playing, Sander, aka Sam Carr, is used to getting what he wants, and he makes it clear he wants Wesley back in his life.

Sam acknowledges it’s his fault they split up. He lost Wesley when he left their life in New York City behind for a career in Hollywood. But Wesley has finally managed to put the pieces of his heart back together, and he isn’t interested in Sam and Wesley: The Sequel. Sam soon realizes that convincing Wesley to give their relationship a second chance will take much more than apologies and reminders of good times past. If he wants Wesley back, Sam will have to show Wesley that they really can sail into the sunset together—a real-life happily-ever-after that won’t end once the final credits roll.

deanna review

I love a second chance romance, it might be my favorite behind GFY. Take Two is one of the best I have read, loved everything about it.

Sam and Wesley have been married for ten years. Wesley is a college history professor in New York while Sam has moved to LA to peruse an acting career as Sander Carson. The time apart has Wesley filing for divorce after three years on loneliness.

Wesley has moved on, he is dating someone on staff at the college, he is up for a new grant at work and has been promoted. Life is perfect until everything starts to unravel. Wesley was supposed to spend the summer at a dig site with his new boyfriend but the plans change and Wesley isn’t able to go along. With a whole summer open Wesley isn’t sure what to do until a big Hollywood studio calls and asks him to help with historical accuracy on a pirate movie being filmed in North Carolina.

A summer in North Carolina, what could go wrong? What Wesley doesn’t know is that Sam has orchestrated this entire thing to win him back. Figuring that if they spend some time together Wesley will fall back into his arms. Sam doesn’t factor in that Wesley may not want to give Sam a second chance. He only has the summer to prove to Wesley that he’s a changed man and he can be the husband that Wesley deserves.

The book ran the whole spectrum of emotion. I was laughing, I was crying, I was depressed, and I was super happy. The author writes about the couples struggles in a way that makes you feel everything but without it being overly dramatic or angsty.

The whole cast of characters were well developed and relatable. I loved Sam’s assistant, Jeff. Super cute, super young. He was adorable.

The story was well thought out and entertaining. I loved that it spanned over a good bit of time, I’m not a huge fan of books that take place over a weekend.

This is one of my favorite reads of the summer!

I absolutely love this story. Wesley and Sam were amazing. This book really resonated with me. I liked that fact that the reason for them splitting up wasn’t because of something scandalous. I completely understood Wesley and his point of view in regards to his relationship with Sam. I thought Sam did a brilliant job realizing he screwed up and trying to make it right. His way of bringing Wesley back into his life was fun and entertaining. I was rooting for him for most of the story. This was a very well done and emotional second chance story.

Wild Retaliation by Ethan Stone: Release Day Review

September 7, 2016 by Denise

wild-retaliationsynopsis

Chief of Police John Dakota is in a world of trouble. His peaceful town of Seaside, Oregon, has been rocked by a wave of unsolved murders. The bloody deaths are eerily reminiscent of ones that occurred in Seaside years ago. Back then John worked hard to make sure the truth about the killer was never revealed. Now he’s afraid the past is coming back to haunt him.

Trevor English, the nosy reporter who occasionally shares John’s bed, is demanding information about the crimes. He also wants more of John’s affections. But John can’t afford to give in to either demand without risking the revelation of Seaside’s biggest secret: the town is a haven for shifters, and John is one of them.

To solve the crime—and prevent more victims—John must delve into the past. Many members of Seaside’s shifter community are involved, but it’s becoming harder and harder to tell which residents can be trusted. Even John’s family isn’t above suspicion. The body count is rising, and it looks like John is the killer’s next target.

deanna review

The mystery and intrigue pulled me in from the first page and I couldn’t put it down.

Chief of Police John Dakota is investigating a string of murders that appear to be copy cats of murders that happened 9 years ago. The murder must somehow be connected to the old case, because they know details that weren’t released to the public.

On top of that he is starting to have strong feelings for his sometimes bed partner, Trevor than he is willing to admit. If John was 100% sure that he could trust Trevor with his secret he would dive in head first, but he isn’t sure how Trevor will take the news that he is a bear shifter.

Trevor is a reporter for the local news paper and has been love with John for a while, but he knows not to push the man too far or else he may walk away. Willing to take what John is able to give he hopes one day John will be able to open up to him.

When Trevor uncovers eerie similarities between the current murders and those from 9 years ago John is forced to reveal his secret. Together they will have to discover why the murders are being reenacted and who is behind it before it’s too late.

This book was awesome, I stayed up way too late reading because I was so engrossed and couldn’t put it down.

The mystery kept me on my toes, I never would have guessed who was behind it. There were a lot of characters in the book, but they were well described so I never was confused.

The story moved at a steady pace and there weren’t any plot holes that I found. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I can’t wait for book 2.

synopsis

Ryder Daniels is all too familiar with rejection. His parents cut off contact because he’s gay and his boyfriend left him, choosing drugs over love. Aside from his rescued pit bull, his only joy is hanging out with his younger brother. Then his mother does the unthinkable and forbids them to see each other, leaving Ryder devastated and alone. His friends urge him to date, but Ryder would rather throw himself into working at the dog rescue and figuring out a way to see his brother again.

When Jason Mallory’s girlfriend gives him an ultimatum to get married, he shocks everyone by breaking up with her instead. He believes he’s too busy for a relationship now that the construction company he started with his brother is taking off. When he discovers a group of abandoned pit bulls and calls the local dog rescue group to pick them up, an uncomfortable encounter with Ryder causes Jason to question feelings he’s hidden deep inside for years.

Jason and Ryder build a friendship, until an unexpected kiss sparks the attraction they’ve been fighting. Jason gives Ryder unconditional love and helps him reconnect with his brother while Ryder shows Jason the passion he’s always missed in relationships. Together they must battle through their family differences and ugly prejudices. Only then can they prove that once you find the right person to love, there’s no turning back.

This is a re-release of the original book which was first published in August of 2014. The entire book has been revised and re-edited with over 10k words added. In addition, at the end of this book is a sneak peek of the next book in Ryder and Jason’s story, Reunited.

 excerpt

Still glaring at him, Jason moved a step closer. “I know you did, but I didn’t get a chance to answer. You dismissed me like I was a stranger. I thought we were friends.” He raked his hand through his hair as his voice, full of frustration, rose a notch. “Look, I didn’t plan on it happening. It surprised me as much as you, but I thought you knew me well enough to know I wouldn’t fuck around with you.”

Ryder tried to ease Jason’s agitated state. “It’s fine. Let’s forget about it, all right?” He gave him an uncertain smile. Better this way. They could work through Jason’s uncomfortable feelings, and as for his own yet-to-be-reckoned-with desires, he could push them back into that black box where he kept all his life’s disappointments. Right now it contained his parents’ treatment of him, his inability to see his brother and the affairs with Josh and Matt. Jason would be one more depressing addition.

Jason cocked his head and narrowed his eyes. “I don’t think you understand.” He took a step closer. “I’m not sorry for kissing you.”

Jason’s soft, husky voice sent a shiver through Ryder and he backtracked a few steps. “I am, though. I’m not looking to teach someone to be gay. You either are or you aren’t, man, and you’re straight.” It pained him to push the guy away, but he wasn’t about to sacrifice a friendship for casual sex.

Jason snorted. “You don’t really know shit about me. If I was perfectly straight, would I have dreams about you?” His blue eyes took on a glint Ryder had never seen before as he continued. “Dreams that have you on your knees sucking my brains out through my cock. Dreams of me sucking you.”

Ryder retreated until he ran out of space and found his back up against the wall, his eyes still caught up in Jason’s mesmerizing dark blue regard. All the air seemed to have been sucked out of the room.

“No one’s ever had this effect on me, not any woman I’ve ever dated or slept with, none of my friends. Not even the guy I once fooled around with in college.” Jason swallowed, a heavy, nervous gulp, then huffed out a self-conscious laugh, all the while never breaking eye contact. “You didn’t know that about me, did you? I’ve never told anyone until now.”

Ryder stood mute, in a state of suspended belief that Jason stood before him, saying these things to him. Jason—bisexual? Was that what he wanted to say? That explosive piece of information Ryder knew had never been shared with anyone before warmed his heart. Jason shared his secret with him, but Ryder remained uncertain what it ultimately meant to their friendship. His heart beat a wild, stuttering rhythm while blood pounded in his head.

As if he couldn’t bear to face Ryder with what he was about to say, Jason turned his back to him. His normally steady, calm voice shook somewhat, betraying exactly how deep his uncertainty ran. “I don’t know what I’m doing here. Am I gay now, ’cause I dream of you, your mouth, your tongue in my mouth? Or, am I bi? God, I can’t believe I’m even saying this, but it’s been making me crazy for weeks now, and I’m not sure what’s happening to me anymore.” He tried to laugh, but it came out choked. “I’m kinda lost at sea here, floating around without a paddle. You know”—a red flush stained the back of his neck—“sex with my ex-girlfriend was never that good. When I look back, it was always unsatisfying, a way to get off quick.” His whisper sounded like a shout to Ryder’s ears. “Maybe it’s why I’ve never thought of settling down. Maybe I knew something was missing.”

deanna review

I loved this book the first time I read it, so when Felice re-edited it and added content I jumped at the chance to enjoy this story all over again. I’m pretty sure I fell harder the second time.

Ryder along with his two best friends, Conner and Emily run Rescue Me; a non-profit pitt bull rescue. Ryder is an attorney working with the rescue to change laws discriminating against pitt bulls and their owners.

Out on a call with Emily to pick up some injured and abandoned pitt bulls from a job site, Ryder meets Jason. Jason runs Mallory Brothers, a construction company he owns with his brother Liam. Jason has only dated women, but the attraction to Ryder is immediate. Jason decides he wants to adopt the puppy that was rescued and he and Ryder become friends.

Along with dealing with his unwanted attraction to Jason, Ryder is also dealing with a family that has disowned him. His mother is a troll and he misses his brother terribly. His mother refuses to let Ryder see his seventeen year old brother Landon unless he promises to settledown with a nice society girl.

Jason’s feelings for Ryder have been growing stronger and stronger, but he hasn’t had the guts to act on them. Ryder refuses to act on his feelings, anyone he has ever loved has left him; boyfriends and family alike. He couldn’t handle it if Jason did the same. One night after hanging at the bar with all their friends, Ryder gets drunk and Jason takes him home. One thing leads to another and the Jason makes a move. Ryder is sure that in the light of day Jason will regret his decision and he will have lost a friend.

Jason not only convinces Ryder that his feelings are real but also comes up with a way for Ryder to see his brother. Things are going great for Jason and Ryder until Jason decides to come out to his family. Jason thinks they will be understanding, after all they are his family and they should love him unconditionally. Jason’s brother Liam doesn’t take the news too well, leaving Jason devastated and nervous to tell the rest of his family.

Now, Ryder and Jason will have to deal with Jason’s family and all of Ryder’s family drama. If the two work together and present a united front they may just make it through.

I loved this story the first time around. In fact I forgot how much I loved it until I was reading it again. The passion Jason and Ryder have for one another is unparalleled.

The characters are so well developed that I can honestly say I have never hated anyone as much as I hate Ryder’s mom, damn she is The Ice Queen. The story line was entertaining and I couldn’t put the book down. Ryder and Jason are one of my top 5 favorite couples!

I loved the epilogue, to see where they are a few years down the road is awesome; but to read the first chapter of the followup book had me jumping up and down for joy. I can not wait to see where Felice takes us with these guys.

I have always been a romantic at heart. I believe that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending around the corner, my characters have to work for it, however. Like life in NYC, nothing comes easy and that includes love.

I live in New York City with my husband and two children and hopefully soon a cat of my own. My day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. I practice law but daydream of a time when I can sit by a beach somewhere and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be a few bumps along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

The Senator’s Secret by K.C. Wells: Release Day Review

September 1, 2016 by Denise

senators

synopsis

Politics, puppy dogs, and passion, oh my!

When his Republican opponent outs him with a photo in a Facebook post, Senator Samuel Dalton doesn’t have many options open to him. It doesn’t matter that the photo is totally innocent. He has no choice but to come clean… until his staff suggest putting a spin on it that leaves Sam reeling.

Sure, he’ll end up with a lot of sympathy, not to mention the possibility of more voters from the LGBT community, but it still seems a pretty drastic solution.

Now all they have to do is persuade Gary, the other man in the photo, to play along. It sounds so easy: convince the constituents of North Carolina that he and Sam are engaged.

No big deal, except for the fact that they’ve only just met….

deanna review

I am mad at everyone for not telling me about KC Wells before now. Where have I been?? This was the sweetest, most entertaining story I have read in a while.

Sam, Senator for the good state of North Carolina is so deep in the closet only one of his closest friends knows that he’s gay. He doesn’t have a boyfriend or even a lover, choosing to channel all of his time and energy into politics.

Gary has just been accepted to Vet school and works part time for Sam’s re-election campaign. In a moment of celebration, Sam gives Gary a congratulatory hug on his acceptance to vet school and someone from the opposing campaign snaps a picture trying to spin it that Sam is hiding secrets from his constituents.

In a moment of insanity, Sam and Gary agree to Sam’s campaign manager’s crazy idea to pretend that the two are together, in fact they are engaged. Hilarity ensues as the two get to know each other, are followed by a photographer, and meet Sam’s parents.

Sam and Gary quickly realize they aren’t really pretending and that this thing just might be real, no matter how it started out.

Love. That’s the only way I can describe this book. I love it. There was a refreshing lack of drama between Sam and Gary, no matter how chaotic things began. There were so man laugh out loud moments. I found myself enjoying this book so so much and wondering how I had not read KC Wells before this.

Sam’s mom, oh my god. She’s hysterical. She’s my hero. Cherry flavored lube, I don’t need to say anything else.

Dinky, the rescue pup was responsible for more than one of my laugh out loud moments.

I loved all of the characters so much I find myself wishing for a sequel or a spin off. I really don’t think I could love this book anymore, there isn’t one thing I would change about any of it. Perfection!

deanna review

The next installment in the Wrench Wars series will get you hot under the collar.

The TV network wants Reggie and his crew off of Wrench Wars because they can’t walk all over them. Reggie has put his foot down more than once about what he will and will not allow. Due to the iron clad contract Reggie negotiated the network has sent Wes to talk Reggie into a find a bride type of reality show. Reggie immediately balks at the idea, no one from the network knows he’s gay.

Wes lays it on the line for Reggie. If he doesn’t agree to do the show the network will cut the garage from Wrench Wars. Reggie can’t have that, his guys are depending on the extra income. Wes himself is stuck between a rock and a hard place. He has had feelings for Reggie since the minute he met him and the idea of pitching a reality show where he finds a wife is making him sick to his stomach.

Reggie is super stressed not being able to find a way out of the spin off series. One of the guys from the shop takes him to the bar after work to blow off some steam. While sitting at the bar they notice Wes at one of the table drowning his sorrows. Wes doesn’t look his usually button up self. His hair is disheveled, his tie is undone and his suit coat is off. Reggie goes over to make sure he’s ok and the two start talking.

Wes is as drunk as Reggie thought he might be and his spills all the networks secrets. That has Reggie coming up with a plan to get out of this mess, but first he has to make sure Wes gets home safe. Reggie takes Wes back to his hotel and as he turns to leave Wes kisses him. Reggie can’t let anything happen while Wes is drunk, he’s not even sure the man is gay.

The steam starts to rise between Reggie and Wes as the pressure from the network rains down on them. Together the two have to come up with a plan to get out of the spinoff series and keep whatever is happening between them on a path to something more permanent.

I love this series so much. I love that each installment can be read in about an hour. They are great stories with surprising depth in so few pages.

The characters are always interesting and just the type I would picture in a garage. The story moves along at a great pace with no plot holes.

The sexy scenes are so steamy I thought my glasses were gonna fog up. Holy cow. *fans herself* I can’t wait for the next one.

deanna review

I love a good friends to lover story so I grabbed this one up quick when I read the blurb, while it was good it wasn’t great.

Matt comes home from a three week stint out of town to find his partner of five years has left him, with a Dear John letter at that. Needing to come to terms with his new life his friend Luke, who Matt has secretly been in love with for years helps him pack his stuff and offers to keep his dog while he goes to Connecticut to work on his brother’s lobster boat.

Luke has loved Matt since almost the first moment he met him, over twenty years ago. He knows his family wouldn’t be accepting of a gay son, so he has buried himself so deep in the closet he isn’t sure he will ever come out. A moment of desperation has Luke kissing Matt before he runs off to Connecticut to lick his wounds. Matt leaves even more confused than ever.

Along his trip up the coast he meets a man names Aric and ends up having a one night stand. The next morning all he feels is guilt and shame, and all his unresolved feelings for both his ex and Luke. Matt knows heading out on his brother’s lobster boat is the only thing that will clear his head.

A week’s worth of back breaking, exhausting work leaves Matt with a clear head. He knows he needs to see where this thing with Luke will take him. In twenty years Luke has never hurt him or let him down, he needs to trust that Luke won’t hurt him now. As soon as he gets off the fishing boat he receives a call that Luke has been hurt while on the job as a firefighter. He’s currently in a coma in Tennessee.

Matt rushes to be at Luke’s side, but has to play it safe because he doesn’t want to out Luke to his family without his permission. This accident has made both Luke and Matt realize what they could have missed out on if Luke hadn’t been so lucky. The shit hits the fan when Luke tells his parents that he is in love with Matt.

Luke’s parents disown him, leaving Matt to help Luke with his rehab. The two opt for a fresh start and along with Matt’s mom, move to Connecticut to be closer to Matt’s brother. Matt and Luke will need to work together to get through Luke’s rehab and family drama and come out happier and closer that ever on the other side.

I really wanted to love this book, but it just didn’t happen. I loved Luke and Matt together, it seemed effortless and easy. Just like it should be.

There were a few secondary story lines that didn’t work with the story or just gave the story the wrong vibe. One was the mention of an older brother that passed away. It didn’t add anything to the story and I was pulled out of the story a few times wondering how that factored into everything else. The other was Aric. I don’t see the added value to Aric’s character. I am one of those that only likes the MC’s to have sex with each other, not with anyone else. I kept expecting Aric to pop back up, especially when they moved back to Connecticut.

I did like the closure Luke got with his family and that Matt’s family was so accepting. There was a great cast of supporting characters, Emma was my favorite.

While this story wasn’t what I expected it was an entertaining, quick read.

Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
My reviewSuck by Cora Rose and EM LindseyI really wish we could do half stars because this was a solid 4 1/2 for me. And I am not one to read monster or alien books. I did read the first couple of chapters of this when the teaser was released and I couldn't wait for the whole story. It's a post pandemic world and Everest has lost his parents and is living with a very strict aunt and uncle. There are some time jumps which are done really well. From when he first lost his parents up to when he turns 18 and can move out and finally present day when he is 21 and can "do his duty". And I can't say a lot about that because I will be censored but see title and I'm sure you can figure it out.At first Everest was intrigued. And then a little freaked out. Then angry. But he still followed through with what Rathyn wanted. Which was him basically at his beck and call. They definitely developed a relationship that went far past their original agreement even though it wasn't explicitly allowed. Everest didn't really know that at first because the alien world was kept from humans for the most part. Very little was known and what was known, humans had to sign an NDA.The world building was really well done. Both on Earth and Erethar. Earth sounded so desolate after the last pandemic but Erethar sounded just beautiful. What kept that 1/2 a star from my rating? Two things. First, Everest basically abandons his best friend. Yes, he does call and see him after a while- but it is after some time. These guys were bff. Moving into an apartment together when they turned 18, hanging out together all of the time, etc. Didn't seem right. And even though Everest identified as straight at the beginning he moved right into being bi (or gay or pan or whatever just not straight) with Rathyn and didn't do any questioning of it. I know, monster alien but still. A little soul searching maybe. So yes, I thought it was a super fun read that was sexy and swoony and kept me turning the pages. Can't wait for book 2!4 1/2 pieces of eye candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨Let’s celebrate! It’s release day for SUCK, a MM Monster Romance by @authoremlindsey &@coraroseauthor! Grab it in KU!#OneClickNowmybook.to/feedandfeastbook1Why you need to #ONECLICK this book…🔥Monster/human🔥MM Romance🔥Hurt/Comfort🔥Sexual Awakening🔥Monster Peen🔥Opposites Attract🔥First Times🔥Lots of Sucking🔥Body Piercings🔥Monster World🔥Power Dynamics🔥High HeatWhen portals from another world split open the sky, humanity braces for war… only to discover the monsters from Erethar aren’t here to conquer. They need something from humans. Something oddly specific in order to survive. And that's when the government begins recruiting for a ritual that sounds a lot like a cross-dimensional booty call.Normally an exclusivity contract with a monster called Rathyn of the Dark Vale would be a hard pass, but the more time I spend with him, the more I realize there’s more to this whole monster/human thing than what the government is telling us.I want to believe it’s nothing more than an arrangement, but the way he melts under my touch, and the way he’s constantly seeking more, makes me believe that maybe his fate is wrapped up in my own. It’s no longer about what I can do for him. It's about what we mean to each other.I’m Everest Hale, and I’m doing my part to save the world with my… Well, I’m not at liberty to discuss, but let’s just say it’s given with vigorous enthusiasm. You’re welcome, Earth.Suck is the first book in the MM Monster Romance series Feed and Feast. It contains a clueless human who’s just looking to do his duty for humanity, a naïve monster who has no idea how much humanity will change him, so much sucking, swooning, antagonists to lovers, cuddling as a love language, body piercings, secret romance, and a toe-curling happily ever after.#newbookalert #corarose #emlindsey #monsterromance The Author Agency ... Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
✨EXCERPT: LICKED by @charlienwrites releasing May 12th!#PreOrderNowmybook.to/lickitoneThis was a date. A romantic date. One that I desperately wanted to go well. So well that Alfie might even be open to kissing me. That would be wonderful. I just couldn’t get my hopes up, because if it went badly, or even if there was no kissing, I’d be devastated. I tried to think about other things as I walked into town towards Vito’s, a small Italian restaurant in the middle of town where we’d agreed to go for dinner. I’d been there before quite a few times and always enjoyed the food, although it could get a little loud and overwhelming at the weekend when it was busy, simply due to the size of the space. But no matter what I tried to turn my thoughts to, they all came stubbornly back to Alfie and how I wanted tonight to go. Eventually I gave up trying to think of anything else, and instead let myself create a list of questions or talking points, just in case we ran out of things to say. Which seemed impossible considering how much we messaged, but it was always good to be prepared. When I rounded the corner to Vito’s, I stopped dead in my tracks, my eyes not fully processing what was in front of me. Alfie was stood just outside on the cobbles in a pair of cream trousers and a pale pink shirt, his honey-blond hair clearly styled… and a bouquet of deep red roses in his arms, wrapped in paper and tied with black ribbon. He looked so gorgeous it stole my breath, but the roses… I’d never had anyone bring me flowers before. #charlienovak #mmromance #kindleunlimited The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less
