A Model Escort by Amanda Meuwissen: Exclusive Author Guest Post

March 8, 2019 by Denise

TCO is very excited to have Amanda Meuwissen on the blog today, in celebration of her newest book, A Model Escort, talking about her favorite TV shows. I’ll admit I haven’t seen a couple of these show, but with all the snow that Minneapolis has gotten this winter (I live in the Twin Cities too!), I can absolutely see hunkering down and binge watching a few of these. What are your favorites? Congrats to Amanda on her latest release!

What’s the value of love?

Shy data scientist Owen Quinn is brilliant at predictive models but clueless at romance. Fortunately, a new career allows him to start over hundreds of miles from the ex he would rather forget. But the opportunity might go to waste since this isn’t the kind of problem he knows how to solve. The truth is, he’s terrible at making the first move and wishes a connection didn’t have to revolve around sex.

Cal Mercer works for the Nick of Time Escort Service. He’s picky about his clients and has never accepted a regular who is looking for companionship over sex—but can the right client change his mind? And can real feelings develop while money is changing hands? Owen and Cal might get to the root of their true feelings… if their pasts don’t interfere.

Top Five Currently Running TV Shows

As an author, it’s no surprise that I was a voracious reader as a child—and that I spend time every single day either reading or writing something. But that in no way means I’m not also a lover of visual mediums like TV and film.

In fact, I created my second major in college combining my favorite things about creative writing, theater, and film to look at the nature of adaptation and what causes a story to be told differently depending on its medium.

There are so many outlets for consuming TV now, most of which have nothing to do with a normal network. Regardless of where I can find my favorite shows, there are some similar things I look for, namely, a good story, good characters, and unique takes on old tropes.

So here are my top five currently running TV shows (or serials on streaming services) and why I love them.

The Good Place

To be fair, I didn’t start watching this NBC show until season 1 was on Netflix, which I then binged, and have been keeping up with it ever since. This is a half-hour sitcom that I kept hearing about (thankfully, without spoilers) and decided to give chance. 5 episodes in a row later, I realized I needed to show my husband and stop watching it without him.

The show takes a humorous look at both the afterlife and moral philosophy, and while I can’t go into much detail, since spoilers abound, the creator describes what success looks like best, asking with each episode:

  1. Is it funny?
  2. Are the characters being developed?
  3. Does the episode ask and answer a question about ethics?
  4. Is it compelling?
  5. Is it consistent with the long game?
  6. Are we making use of the premise?

Those specific questions aren’t relevant to every story, but they create an important template for how every writer should look at their progression.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

An Amazon original, this is an hour-long comedic drama that carries a lot of the charm of a sitcom while never skimping on tough topics.

This show pulls you in and keeps every character so robust, you can’t find fault with it. Set in the late 1950s, the setting and costumes can be just as much a star of the show, but it never leans too much on historical context or real-life people, because the original content and characters shine the brightest.

If someone told me I’d one day love a show about a 50s housewife turned standup comic, I doubt I would have believed it, but this show lives up to all its hype.

The Haunting of Hill House

Now for a Netflix original. Again, hour-long, but this is nothing like the comedic series I’ve addressed so far. This is horror drama at its best. It strikes a unique balance of storytelling between characters and also different versions of those characters because we jump between past and present, seeing both child and adult versions of the main family.

A fault with a lot of horror in visuals mediums today is overuse of jump scares without atmosphere. This series will still make you jump, but it gets under your skin in the best way, while also telling very touching and emotional vignettes and ending in a way that I think a lot of horror shies from.

It’s just refreshing that, despite being horror, I was left with the most amazing sense of catharsis. Stories come to their natural conclusions when told well. Not everything needs to be 10 seasons or 7 books long.

Brooklyn 99

I guess I’m in a laughing mood a lot lately, because here’s another sitcom, this one originally on Fox and now on NBC as one of several shows to hit a new trend of fans saving their favorite stories by petitioning when they’re about to be cancelled until another network or service picks them up.

In this case, having watched it on both Fox and NBC, I can say that nothing has been lost or changed from switching networks (which can’t be said for predecessor Supergirl that moved from CBS to The CW).

Like The Good Place, this show manages to by uniquely funny with a wonderfully diverse cast, and never disappoints, often surprising you with how much heart it has. Comedy does not mean easy or simple or lesser, something I’m glad we’re seeing more of these days.

Lucifer

Yep, yet another show nearly cancelled that was picked up by someone else – this time from Fox to Netflix, which is still upcoming as its slated for its season 4 Netflix release later this year.

It’s rare that I have a show I cannot miss when it airs, but this was a first where that remained true through three seasons. Some of my favorite shows had really strong seasons 1 and 2 and then declined in quality (Supernatural, The Flash), but Lucifer never once disappointed me or had a dud of an episode.

It’s drama, action, humor, romance, but even more than the fun premise of having sympathy for the Devil himself is the focus on friendships. Between women, men, across genders, across ages and species, always over the romance angle. It’s also a cast of entirely 35+ for the main characters.

I daresay, Lucifer is a flawless show, and I hope its switch to Netflix doesn’t mar its perfection.

Amanda Meuwissen is a primarily gay romance writer, as well as Marketing Operations Manager for the software company Outsell. She has a Bachelor of Arts in a personally designed major from St. Olaf College in Creative Writing, and is an avid consumer of fiction through film, prose, and video games. As author of the paranormal romance trilogy The Incubus Saga, young adult novel Life as a Teenage Vampire, the novelette The Collector, and superhero duology Lovesick Gods and Lovesick Titans, Amanda regularly attends local comic conventions for fun and to meet with fans, where she will often be seen in costume as one of her favorite fictional characters. Redeem (Under My Skin Book 4) by Christina Lee: New Release Review

March 5, 2019 by Denise

Successful financial analyst Michael Walsh leads a picture-perfect life that anyone would envy—unless they caught a glimpse beneath the surface. Haunted by failed relationships and self-doubt, Michael harbors a soul-deep loneliness that no number of casual hookups can fulfill. So why can’t he stop thinking about his New Year’s fling with a man whose quiet desperation matched his own?

Barista Stewart Jenkins has an abysmal track record with relationships, and no matter how hard he tries to keep things tightly under wraps, his life is spinning out of control. His hookup with the gorgeous Michael was only supposed to be sex—hot, dirty, uncomplicated—but that small taste leaves him yearning for more.

Every no-strings encounter that follows between Michael and Stewart peels away more layers, blurring the lines, until they’re left with a raw tenderness and acceptance they both crave. A relationship seems out of the question—they come from drastically different lives and are plagued by inexcusable sins. Being vulnerable is sure to reveal old wounds, and forgiveness seems out of reach, unless they can find a way around their fears on the road to redemption.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

If you read the previous 3 books in the series- well, just books 2 and 3- you know Michael and Stewart. And you hate them. They are assholes and we wished them flesh eating bacteria starting on their asses.

And then Christina Lee made us like them. Dammit.

What was a bonus scene (and not an excerpt from an upcoming book) was in fact, the opening scene in book 4. Michael and Stewart both proverbially licking their wounds on New Year’s Eve and having a hot hook up in the bar’s bathroom.

And then these bastards worm into our hearts. Gah!

We find out way more about Michael and Stewart and what makes them tick. What makes them they way they are. And after both of them lost great men because of their douchebaggery, they realize that maybe they should do a bit of self reflection.

It is slow going, but these guys grow on you more and more. And as they are growing on you, they are growing on each other. Not that they will ever admit it, but still. The whole no strings thing is oh so convenient to men who are afraid.

It isn’t easy to redeem (see what I did there) characters that you previously wanted to punch in the throat, but Christina Lee did it. And she gave us a sweet, sexy romance of two guys who really needed each other.

It doesn’t matter what obstacles you throw in the way of love, or how much you run in the other direction, because, when you’re least expecting it, whether you want it or not, love happens anyway.

Great Holiday Listen!

Super cute story about a down on his luck ex-fireman that hires himself out to his friends escort service to come up with the funds to remodel and re-open his family bar and a super stressed Ad Exec who has himself caught in a snare with a little made up story about a boyfriend that his parents have insisted they meet. Both are in a pickle but maybe together they can both find a happy every after.

Love this one. The characters are well developed, especially for a holiday novella. The story is entertaining without too much drama or over the top sugar.

What can I say about Sean Crisden? He is one of my favorite narrators. He has a way of bringing a story to life with his smooth rich voice.

It was times like these Kollin wished he could breathe fire since it was flashy, but he settled on letting a great fog of icy air out then flew through it, ice crystals forming on his wings that broke off with each beat. He pulled up to the very peak of the mountain and landed. Taking in a huge breath, he reared up, stretching his neck out as far as possible letting loose a mighty roar that shook the mountain.

Danica swooped around and landed by his side, letting out her own slightly higher pitched roar that complimented his deep one perfectly. Kollin felt the vibrations of it through his body. Their roars continued even after they stopped as it echoed across the mountain range for miles all around them. Danica swung her head around looking at the sight before her. Kollin watched her closely as her eyes took in their surroundings.

It was absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking. The ocean was in the distance and she could see bits of floating ice in it. It was cold up here and despite their higher temperature she shivered a bit from the cold and the exertion of the flight. Kollin moved closer putting a wing over top of her, sharing his warmth with her. Danica nuzzled her snout up his neck in appreciation.

Danica leaned her head out, something had her attention. Kollin followed her line of sight and chuffed. Down in the valley was a lake and on one side was a small village. He breathed out a sheet of ice before them and took a talon to it.

“Our Wolves.” He scratched out.

Danica nodded in understanding. She leaned into him more heavily as her fatigue obviously started to overcome her. Before she could collapse, Kollin nudged her towards forward. She took the hint and launched off. She spiraled slowly down into the valley. Kollin launched himself into the air and followed after her.

My review:Shadows Never Leave (Shadows duet book 2) by Lark TaylorThis is book 2 of a duet and you must read book 1 first...a.co/d/06h9mALvThis one was a bit tough for me. Mostly because I enjoyed book 1 so much I was expecting more from book 2.A note that cheating doesn't really bother me in books. But I felt that having Ryan engaged when Dominic returns was a bit too much...After 10 years Dom (and Max) are back. Dom wants to win Ryan back. Max wants his twin back in his life. But Ryan isn't that 18 year old kid anymore. And he isn't taking anyone's crap either.Dom is totally annoying at first. Ryan jokingly calls him a stalker, but there were stalker vibes there. Which fit with his personality but still.Too much of the book is them just rehashing what happened when Dom left and the fact that they have had zero communication in that time. Over and over and over again. It got to the point where I was ready to throw my kindle if Ryan said "BUT YOU LEFT!" one more time. And it is sooooooo obvious that he and his fiance Katie don't belong together. They liked each other. Probably loved each other. And they were the type of couple to make it work and make it look perfect on the outside. But they would have ended up miserable. So yes, we get the HEA. But we had to trudge through some mud to get there.3 pieces of eye candy ... See MoreSee Less

Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
New release and my review for:Seven Minutes by Raquel Riley At times this was a difficult read for me (stress for ME). But that didn't make it a bad book. Quite the contrary. Any book that stirs feelings in you is a book that hits home.We aren't yet privy to the relationship between Adrian and Eli when a horrific car accident brings Eli to Adrian's emergency room. (maybe a nitpick here but how did none of the staff know it was his husband??) The title refers to the 7 minutes after you die when your brain is still functioning. Which is really kind of scary to me. But it is through those 7 minutes of recollection by Eli that we get most of the back story.Being that this is a romance, I don't think it is much of a spoiler that Eli survives. But what comes next is picking up the pieces of their lives, and more importantly, their marriage. There are fights and apologies and explanations.... Eli is still ready to give up despite his love for Adrian. Adrian is not giving up because of his love of Eli.You don't appreciate what you have until you lose it. Or almost lose it.4 Pieces of Eye CandyOne click here 👉 a.co/d/0e1X1vOC ... See MoreSee Less
