Something Undeniable: Split Rock Ranch Book 1 by Rory Maxwell: New Release Review with Giveaway

October 19, 2022 by Denise

.                                   .

Micah Avery has called Split Rock Ranch home for most of his life—it’s one of the few places he can be totally himself without worry or judgment. The ranch, the horses, and the people are Micah’s future, and he couldn’t be happier. The fact that it’s also home to the ranch manager he’s determined to marry one day is icing on the cake . . . all he needs is for Ryan to notice him.

Ryan Astor came to Split Rock Ranch at a time when he was desperate to start over. It was just supposed to be a stop on the road, but instead he found a home and a family—that family includes Micah, the sweet kid who’s been the ranch mascot since before he was tall enough to see over the stall doors. Ryan’s finally found his place, and he can’t imagine wanting anything to change.

Then little Micah Avery grows up. And Ryan’s suddenly confronted with a whole mess of feelings and desires he never expected. Now he needs to decide if he can give in to what they both want without jeopardizing everything they have.

Something Undeniable is a slow-burn, 37k-word novella with an age gap, mutual pining, and plenty of heat. It’s the first book in the Split Rock Ranch series, but can be read as a stand-alone story.

This looks to be a new author, and she did a very good job on this slow burn cowboy romance. There were still a few unanswered questions for me at the end, but overall well done.

When we first meet Micah and Ryan, Micah is a senior in high school but has been in love with Ryan for several years. He told his friend right away when Ryan came to the ranch that he would marry him someday. Ryan, of course, had no idea, and didn’t even consider Micah, since he was so much older. Until right at Micah’s graduation, when Micah has no idea if he wants to stay or go away to college. They have a moment, and then Micah leaves for 3 years.

I have to give kudos to the author on this. She didn’t shy away from the distance that these two needed in order for Micah to mature, and decide what he really wanted. Micah even had relationships before he came back, but always wanted Ryan. This was really well done. The two men circled each other when Micah returned, but it wasn’t long.

The side characters were really well done, as well. One is on the autism spectrum and is very well portrayed. Since everyone on the spectrum is different in their needs and concerns, it was great to see not only the representation, but also the respect that all the characters gave her for her skills and joy in what she did.

Very enjoyable, and I’m interested to see how the author takes their relationship in book 2 and challenges it, because Micah and Ryan definitely got their HEA in the first book.

The magic of a dial-up internet connection led her to the wonderful world of MM fanfiction a few years later and she fell love with the genre. In 2019 she woke up with a plot bunny, opened a word doc, and started trying to figure out how this writing stuff worked.

Rory grew up outside of Washington, DC, moved away, and then came back for reasons she doesn’t fully understand. An artist and writer, she always has too many exciting ideas and not nearly enough free time. One day, she hopes to escape to the mountains and open an LGBTQIA+ friendly bed and breakfast where she can work from home and write as much as she wants. Ryan was going to hell.

He gripped the table in front of him as the door closed and Micah’s footsteps retreated down the stairs. Little Micah Avery—who had practically been Ryan’s shadow since he was a gangly teenager—had grown up. How the fuck did he miss that?

He scrubbed a hand over his face, trying to banish the memory of drenched cotton clinging to defined muscle, of broad shoulders that tapered to a narrow waist, and the surprisingly large bulge in wet jeans. Micah had looked good. Beyond good. Before Ryan’s brain could register what was happening, his shocked disbelief had flipped to heat…and want.

He’d escaped the room as quickly as possible to grab a towel and calm himself the hell down. He’d returned in time to see Micah drag the shirt over his head, revealing tight pink nipples, the cut vee of his abs, and a dusting of chest hair leading to a perfectly lickable happy trail. Ryan’s mouth had dried up instantly. As soon as he’d realized he was staring he turned away, but it was too late. The image was seared into his brain.

Objectively, he’d always known the kid was good-looking and would probably grow up to be attractive. He had nice features and his father was a handsome guy. None of that had prepared Ryan for proof of said growing up to be stripping in his living room. The goofball teen who flailed, joked, and tripped over thin air had somehow become a young man with a perfect body, a wicked grin, and a generous mouth that Ryan was suddenly struggling not to picture in compromising situations.

Out of sheer self-preservation, Ryan had kept his back turned while Micah redressed and asked about using the washer. He hadn’t been able to make himself turn back. He’d probably looked and sounded like an asshole—especially with that dig about the guests being here soon—but he’d been too worried Micah would see his face and get the wrong idea. The last thing either of them needed was to complicate their friendship.

Micah Avery was one hundred percent off-limits, and Ryan had no intention of changing the status quo.

Who knew straight guys with long term girlfriends were so into platonic cuddling?Chase’s stressful days as a medical resident have me doting like an eager housewife—which is ridiculous…Until we cross a line, and I’m left wondering what’s crazier: Chase still thinking he’s straight, or me thinking this could end in anything other than heartbreak.CHASENinety-hour weeks as a general surgery resident leave me hollow and mentally fried, so when running into an old acquaintance offers me a break I desperately need, I jump at the opportunity. As the Life Flight helicopter pilot for Boston Memorial, I expected to see Logan from time to time. What I wasn’t expecting was to become his roommate so soon after reconnecting.Nor was I expecting my platonic feelings for him to turn into something… more.I blame it on my need for physical touch and the long-distance relationship I have with my girlfriend.Until a kiss with Logan at the stroke of a New Year’s midnight changes everything.I need Logan in ways I never imagined, but by the time I figure that out, it may be too late.Asystole is book one in the Boston Memorial series. Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
Allegiant (The Firm Book 4) by Cora Rose and Lark Taylor. My review:Another winner for this series. Listen, you definitely have to suspend reality. But at the same time it seems so normal. Maybe because we don't see a lot of the "wet work" of The Firm. And these brothers are just so funny. They all have serious trauma from their father and they aren't the greatest at expressing emotions. But they love and protect fiercely. Even when they are threatening each other with daggers, torture and imminent death. Ahh fratricide. Must like one of the other books, Samson is tasked with killing someone they believe killed his best friend. But then he met him. Lust came first.Rowan is still grieving his best friend who was killed almost a year ago. He throws himself into work as a dancer and preparing for an upcoming show. But this handsome giant of a man helps him forget as well.Until, yanno, Samson figures out that Rowan didn't do it. And he has to convince his brothers of the same.Besides the regular cast of characters, we also meet Larry. Rowan's neighbor who he considers old and invalid and he kind of forces friendship on him. And helps him out around the house. The more we learn about Larry, the more interesting he is.Rowan also helps Samson come out of his shell a bit with dance. Something Samson loves but only does in secret. Never in front of anyone. Until Rowan. I was a bit perplexed why Rowan was able to forgive one person for something but not Samson. And He does grapple with that himself. But I appreciated that Rowan really stuck up for himself and wasn't going to just accept what happened. These two were so great together. Rowan defending Samson to Samson's brothers made me want to stand up and cheer. And Samson refusing to just go away after the big fight. He was fine in the shadows. He just needed to keep Rowan safe. Swoon. If you've read the others, you'll really enjoy this.PS: as someone who grew up going to dance classes who also had a some who went to dance classes for 10 years, I wish more research was done so those parts of the book were more accurate.PPS: THAT EPILOGUE!4 Pieces of Eye Candy ...
