Prince of Killers (A Fog City Novel) by Layla Reyne: Exclusive Excerpt, Interview, Blog Tour and Giveaway

June 13, 2019 by Denise

No indiscriminate killing. No collateral damage. No unvetted targets.

These are the rules Hawes Madigan lives by. Rules that make being Fog City’s Prince of Killers bearable. Soon, he’ll be king—of an organization of assassins—and the crown has never felt heavier. Until the mysterious Dante Perry swaggers into his life.

Dante looks like a rock god and carries himself like one too, all loose-limbed and casually confident. He also carries a concealed weapon, a private investigator’s license, and a message for the prince. Someone inside Hawes’s organization is out to kill the future king.

In the chaos that follows the timely warning, Hawes comes to depend on Dante. On his skills as an investigator, on the steadiness he offers, and on their moments alone when Hawes lets Dante take control. As alliances are tested and traitors exposed, Hawes needs Dante at his back and in his bed. But if the PI ever learns Hawes’s darkest secret, Hawes is sure to get a knife to the heart—and a bullet to the brain—instead.

There’s no shortage of twists and turns in this new romantic suspense trilogy from Layla Reyne. Prince of Killers is book one of three. Fair warning: buckle up, cliffhangers ahead!

  • Do you listen to audiobooks? If so, are there any you’d recommend?

Yes! One of my day jobs is as a legal resource editor, and I always have an audiobook playing when I’m doing that work. The Tales of Verania series by TJ Klune, narrated by Michael Lesley, is an absolute treasure.

  • What are your five favorite words?

I just need one: Fuck, especially the way Tristan James says it narrating audiobooks 😉

  • Do you have a favorite cover from one of your books?

This one! Cate Ashwood who did all the Fog City covers sent me the cover concept for Prince of Killers first, and I screamed “Holy Shit!” so loudly that my dogs startled. And I kept repeating “Holy Shit” for like the next week. She deserves so much credit, as does Wander Aguiar for the gorgeous photos, and Patrick Sean (the model) for just being that damn gorgeous.

He was starting to think Dante was right. Whatever was happening now was connected to what had happened then, on the night Isabelle Costa died.

That fact acknowledged—and the anxiety and unease that came with it internalized—a calm settled over Hawes. He counted the panes in the windows, waited for his breath and heartbeat to slow, then dropped his arms and turned back to his condo full of visitors. “I’ll see what I can find out today at the pier.”

“I’ve got a hearing at ten.” Helena dumped her empty paper plate into the trash. “If I don’t go by the station beforehand, I’ll swing by there after. I can be at HQ by one.”

“No,” Hawes said. “Things need to appear as usual. I would normally be in this morning. You wouldn’t.”

“I’ll go in with you,” Holt said. He patted Lily’s back through the sling. “She’s having fun being out today.”

Dante pushed off the fridge. “And I’ll have their backs.”

Helena blocked his forward momentum with her arm. “Look here, Mr. Hair—”

“Hena,” Hawes chided, while Holt laughed.

Their sister, however, held the steak knife at-the-ready and had drawn nose-to-chest with Dante, though you wouldn’t know it by her stance. For all she cared, she was taller than Dante, not a good foot shorter. “You’ve gotta give us more before I let you walk into this with my family.”

“There’s a flash drive in my coat pocket.”

“I’ve got it,” Hawes said, saving Holt the trouble of reaching around the baby and laptop. He retrieved the flash drive—generic, drugstore model—and held it out to Holt.

Holt’s wary gaze split between him and Dante. “I’m not putting that in my computer without checking it for viruses.”

“I wouldn’t either,” Dante said. “Which was why I checked it before I put it in mine. No viruses, I swear.”

Holt still hesitated. Hawes slapped the drive into his hand with a firm, “Just do it.” They didn’t have time to argue.

Hawes moved behind Holt so he could view the screen as Holt disconnected from servers and wireless networks before inserting the flash drive. No blue screen of death appeared. Holt released a held breath, and Hawes put a hand on his shoulder, squeezing gently. Then harder, unintentionally, when Holt opened the first unnamed folder and the screen filled with surveillance photos—of Hawes. From various spots around town, from the pier, from outside the family fort in Pac Heights, and in front of his condo. Each had a bull’s-eye drawn on his head.

Chef vs. Chef (Sizzling in the Kitchen Book 2) by M.J. O’Shea: New Release Review

June 12, 2019 by Denise

Bobby Diaz has worked his whole life to get where he is – running a restaurant with his two closest friends, no boss, no stress. When his best friend Baldwin gets the opportunity of a lifetime, he asks Bobby to take over the restaurant while he’s gone. Bobby will miss his friend, but he’s excited to put himself to the test. He can’t believe he’s getting the chance to finally be in charge.

Cal Mayer is thirty and starting over. His last relationship was a failure. His job went down the drain. So when his cousin Pete, a.k.a Baldwin Powell celebrity chef, offers him a gig in his restaurant, he can’t help but to jump at the offer to reinvent himself.

Bobby and Cal don’t exactly hit it off—to put it lightly. Bobby resents getting Cal dumped in his lap. Cal doesn’t appreciate Bobby’s frosty attitude. They’re stuck together day and night, and their chemistry is undeniable… but will it be sweet summer love or a case of too many chefs in the kitchen?

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

This was totally meh. It’s readable, but utterly forgettable.

Quite a bit of the book is spent before the two main characters even meet each other. Both went through a big change in their lives so it is them (separately) getting their feet under them again.

Then they do meet and because of a stupid misunderstanding, one hates the other.

Then finally, FINALLY, they kiss. And it’s like this fast forward through all of the fun stuff. “Spring turns to summer…”. Uh, ok. What about THEM? As a couple? Dating? Cute flirty stuff?

Even during the hate period, it wasn’t even competitive fun hate. It was just one guy being a total jerk.

Weak storyline that really had potential. Weak characters. Weak romance.

Just meh.

Reeling from the painful rejection of a man he thought he loved, Asher is left holding the baby.

Ash wants a family, and is determined to continue with a surrogacy he’d begun with his ex. Bringing baby Mia home, he vows that he will be the best father he can be. Nothing in this world matters more to him than caring for his daughter, not even accidentally falling in lust with the doctor next door. Challenged by his growing attraction to Sean, and confronted by painful memories of his family, Ash has to learn that love is all that matters.

When ER doctor Sean moves in with his friends next door to sexy single father Ash, he falls so quickly it takes his breath away. The sex they have is hot, but Ash is adamant his heart is too full with love for his daughter to let anyone else in. Why is Sean the only one who sees how scared Ash is, and how can he prove to his new lover that he desperately wants the three of them to become a family?

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

Single dads… I am such a sucker for you….

Asher is a new dad who’s ex up and left the day before Ash’s surrogate gave him the good news that she was pregnant. That, mixed with an unsupportive borderline hateful mother, made Asher want to be the perfect dad for his little girl, who’s only a few weeks old when we meet them.

Sean, ER doctor that just moved in next door with his firefighter and cop friend, doesn’t make the best first impression when a drunk Eric shows up on Ash’s porch, throwing up in his bushes and wakes the baby… but he’s smitten with Asher from the beginning.

Sean is cute and I hated that he had to try so hard with Asher, because honestly….
Asher is SO EXTRA… I understand being a single parents and how scary everything is when your baby is brand new and you have no clue what you’re doing, or even what day it is most of the time…. But my goodness, the man was so irrational and grumpy that bordered on rude, and I just wanted to be like… dude, relax. Things are not that serious…. I mean, he thought he couldn’t close his eyes at night or his baby would stop breathing. He was scared to take a shower or go into the next room….
That poor baby is going to be so smothered… it’s all I could think. Hopefully Sean helps him with that.

I liked how real this story was though, as a single mother when my kids were tiny, I remember how scary it was to trust and letting new people in was hard. I mean, Asher made it irrationally hard, but, still…. His mom’s issues on top of the betrayal of his ex, I could understand if even just a little bit where he was coming from… And Sean, he did everything he could and was patient when Asher tried to brush him off… more patient than I would’ve been, that’s for sure.

And of course, the ex comes back, and it was then that I was glad that Asher could hold a grudge… and wow, could he hold a grudge, I almost felt bad for his mother a couple of times. I loved Ash’s twin sister Siobhan, not afraid to tell call him out and tell him when he was being ridiculous, but also sympathetic and supportive. I was glad he had her, if not for the support but also for telling him when he was being ridiculous.

Overall, this was a great start to the series, even if Asher wasn’t really my favorite… I’m really really excited to read about the other guys, Eric and Leo… I also can’t wait to see what’s up with Brady, who I believe is next up with officer Eric. I have a feeling he might break my heart.

His Consort by Mary Calmes: Audiobook Review

June 11, 2019 by Denise

A new life in New Orleans is all Jason Thorpe had hoped: His quaint little store attracts a devoted staff, and his warm, loving heart grants him a loyal circle of friends. He’s perfectly content, having left behind the chill of a confusing and danger-filled night in Washington, until he discovers something unbelievable lurking in the steamy darkness of the shadowy streets of the Vieux Carré, something that turns out to be terrifying…and utterly mesmerizing.

The prince of the vampires, Varic Maedoc, is visiting New Orleans when he finds out the man who once helped his counselor is there in the Quarter. He thinks to simply meet and thank Jason – until he lays eyes on him. Varic’s devoted himself to protect the honor of his race, and he’s never wanted a mate before…but he immediately knows he must have this man, and no one else will do.

Varic may want to bring Jason safely into his world, but someone who doesn’t like the human’s soothing influence on vampires has deadly plans that would disrupt Varic’s dreams. Now, unable to tell friend from foe, Jason finds himself wondering how to hold on to the prince’s heart when he’s fighting for his life.

I am a huge fan of Mary Calmes, I will read or listen to just about anything she writes. When I saw His Consort I was a little skeptical, I have a hard time finding vampire stories that keep my interest. I feel like most of them are too cliche, almost campy.
This one grabbed my interest from the first word. The story itself was entertaining with just the right amount of intrigue to keep my interest peaked. Mary’s vampyrs introduce you to a whole new vocabulary which at first I thought was going to be difficult to remember because, hey I’m listening and my memory is crap, but I didn’t have a problem.

I haven’t had the pleasure of listening to anything else narrated by Scott Smith, but holy cow that voice. He gives life to Varic Maedoc like I don’t think anyone else could. His voice is cultures and smooth as honey. His voice has a rich cadence that draws you in.

I can’t say enough good things about both the story writing and the narration, both are amazing. I’ve already read almost everything by Mary Calmes, I will definitely be looking up more work by Scott Smith.

Keeping Cade by SE Jakes: Blog Tour, Excerpt and Giveaway

June 11, 2019 by Denise

Protection has its price, but so do fantasies…

Fantasy Week happens twice a year at Crave, and it’s always a big hit—a way to live out your wildest fantasy in a safe, sane, and consensual manner.

But when Cade comes in with his Fantasy Week invitation, he’s not happy about it. He’s stoic as hell and his preferences don’t seem to match his fantasy at all…and yet, despite that, he enjoys himself with Tegan and Vic. At least at first.

When it becomes glaringly apparent that the fantasy isn’t something Cade’s comfortable with, it’s confusing for the men he’s been paired with, and Tegan and Vic put a stop to the scene immediately.

What Cade doesn’t know is that Tegan and Vic are not only co-owners of Crave, but they’re also owners of a mercenary group, Gray Ops, that’s run out of Crave. They’ve also been circling each other for years… but nothing sparks until their session with Cade.

What happened in Room 4 is something none of the men can forget…but it’s got nothing to do with a fantasy and everything to do with blackmail. Can Tegan and Vic help Cade keep his secrets, while keeping all of them safe at the same time? Because the secrets threatening to spill out aren’t only Cade’s…

“Am I being chauffeured or can I take my own truck?” Cade asked as they walked out the back door of Crave, leaving behind Oz’s yells of “I can’t promise what I’ll do if you leave me alone with him.”

“We’ll drive you,” Tegan told him.

“Why don’t you just carry me across the threshold of the fight club when we get there?” Cade muttered.

“Didn’t know you needed that level of romance,” Vic said seriously. “I’ll keep it in mind.”

Cade sighed heavily and got into the back seat with Vic, while Tegan drove. He guessed it was for protection, and arguing wouldn’t change a damned thing. He needed to preserve his strength anyway.

Vic handed him a Gatorade and a PowerBar. “Eat up.”

Cade muttered, “Fucking starving and this shit tastes like cardboard.”

“Fight first, then I’ll get you a goddamned buffet,” Vic promised.

“There’s a McDonald’s on the corner,” Cade pointed out hopefully.

“You had an entire pizza recently,” Vic reminded him.

“Recently to me is the last hour.” Cade bit into the PowerBar and stared at Vic. “I think this went bad.”

Vic frowned. “They can’t go bad.”

Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
My review: Twisted Little Game by Raleigh RuebinsAnother in this Crimson College series. This one was a bit different than the others. Yes, they are still in college and it takes place there, but the other members of the Onyx Society aren't much of a part of the story as in previous books. And, not for nothin, I thought it was a big secret society and let Roman just waltzes in with Tate and no one questions it.Anyway. Roman is Bratva and as a favor to a cousin he is now the bodyguard of Tate, son and brother of football royalty who has been getting some pretty nasty threats.Tate is that golden retriever happy guy who literally makes friends with everyone. But he is mad about having a babysitter. Even if Roman is hot af.Roman never thought he liked guys. Until this blonde dynamo was under his care.Push, push back. Bicker. Test boundaries. Finally give in. But we knew that would happen, right? They are really hot and cute together so that's fine. And the plot was a bit interesting when we find out the twisted web the stalker came from. What disappointed me was the utter lack of family. Here Tate is being threatened and presumably has a stalker. Yes, he got kicked out of his last college, but seriously. His parents don't check on him? Or his brother who seemingly hired Roman to be a bodyguard. And on that note, Roman is all about how he is Bratva because of family and honor and whatnot, but never once do we see his father. You'd think the head of the Bratva Petrov family would want to know what his son is up to. Since it's obviously not Bratva business.Anyway. I did like the book and I loved them together, but they were was too insolated from most of the world.4 pieces of eye candy ...

My review: Rookie Moves by Jodi OliverWhat a fun read. I loved the premise- hockey prodigy wants to go to college for a year before he is drafted to get the experience of going to college. Of course he still plays for the college hockey team. He has three things he wants to accomplish during that year. And one of them is losing his v card. Cliche? Maybe. But the story is told really well. And even though Colby is a freshman, he recruits senior Tyler to help him. But it isn't wham, bam, thank you D man. It's slow and drawn out. Which shows Tyler's maturity. Wanting it to be perfect for Colby.Underneath it we have Tyler who is graduating soon which means working for his father back home and giving up hockey. Two things he absolutely doesn't want to do. And grr his father makes me so mad. And Colby who wants to play in the NHL, but also already feels the pressure of it. Hockey has had their eyes on him since he was a child. And it isn't getting better. We follow these two for several months with the backdrop of college hockey and making it to the Frozen Four. Of course with the ultimate goal of winning it. There isn't too much hockey (sorry, I don't like getting bogged down with page after page after page of hockey plays) and there isn't too much sex. It's actually balanced really well and the story moves forward without getting stuck anywhere. And apparently there will be a book 2 so we get more of Colby and Tyler? Yes please! I loved these guys4 1/2 pieces of eye candy ...

My review: Asystole by Jillian D Wray I am kind of hooked on this author's books! This is the start of a new series that is spun off from the previous one Ricochet Ridge. We met Logan and Chase briefly in that series and now they get their own story several years later. These 2 were classic black cat and golden retriever. And since Logan is still pining after the man he can't have, I'll let you guess which one he is. And even though Chase is a surgical resident in a long distance relationship trying to live up to his parents expectations- he is just a happy guy. So when he basically doesn't give up on asking Logan out for a beer, a friendship is formed.I will say that this is a VERY slow burn and it does involve cheating. So if cheating is a hard pass, now you know. The book gives them time to develop a relationship-mostly as friends-until it's more. But I liked that. I loved seeing them BE friends. Hanging out, getting a beer, etc.It also shows what residents go through. Not just the long hours- but what is expected of them. Giving up time off, writing reports, meeting with drug companies. I had no idea. And I really can't wait for book 2!4 pieces of eye candy ...

My review: Callous Shot by Becca SteeleYes, another hockey book. But this one is set in England and although the rivalry between 2 colleges is prominent, I don't think hockey takes the front seat. What does is the weird rivalry between the son/nephew in a crime family and the son/nephew of another crime family's lawyer and the detective who is investigating them. IHonestly, it took me a while to get into this book. I just didn't understand the "I hate you/No I hate you" stuff. Which lasted a LONG TIME. And it was over and over and over again. Like, ok. We get it. You hate each other. Even when you are having sex you hate each other. Got it. And the last names. Even outside of hockey why do guys call each other by their last names? Once they finally got over that, the book got better AND there was more plot. Dan and Link both have legacies to live up to. Unfortunately, Link's father is pretty horrible. A do this or else kind of guy. Dan doesn't seem to have the outward pressure that Link does, but in his head he does. Because he is next in line to take over. The kind of convoluted storyline with Link's father wanting Dan's family investigated finally makes sense at the end. But it's a bit of a meandering road. One that causes the 3rd act break up before they inevitably get back together. It was ok. I certainly didn't love it. There was a lot that could have been cut. I normally like this author, but this one was a bit of a miss.3 pieces of eye candy ...
