Treasure Trail by Morgan Brice: Guest Post, Excerpt and New Release Review

July 18, 2019 by Denise

Erik Mitchell traveled the world uncovering art fraud and relic theft, which pitted him against spoiled billionaires, unscrupulous collectors, mobsters and cartels. He worked with law enforcement across the US and Europe, but a sting goes wrong and Erik ends up injured, then returns to find his partner cheating. Erik decides to stop globe trotting and buy an antique shop in scenic Cape May, NJ, rebuild his life, and nurse his broken heart.

Undercover Newark cop Ben Nolan went down in a hail of bullets when a bust went sideways, after a tip-off from a traitor inside the department. After he recovers, he spends a couple of years as a private investigator, only to tire of seeing the worst of human nature. So when his aunt offers him the chance to take over her rental real estate business in Cape May, it seems too good to be true. Now if he could just believe he could ever be lucky again in love.

When a missing antique shows up under mysterious circumstances, Ben and Erik are plunged into danger as a cursed hotel’s long-ago scandals resurface. Someone wants those secrets to stay buried—and is willing to add Ben and Erik to the death toll to keep the past hidden.

Sexy Supernatural Suspense

I love stories with spooky stuff and sexy men. Add in some magic, a few ghosts, and maybe a creature or two, and I’m in my happy place. Oh, and throw in a murder or two just for good measure!

Treasure Trail checks off all my boxes—spooky, sexy, supernatural stuff, along with old scandals and unsolved murders. Throw in two hot guys with dangerous pasts and sparks really fly! Treasure Trail is set in Cape May, New Jersey. Erik Mitchell used to track art fraud and bust up forgery rings, but after a close call, he moves to Cape May to make a fresh start. Ex-cop Ben Nolan is also starting over, and sparks fly when the two men meet. But when old scandals and murders come to light, they’re going to need each other and every bit of luck to get their happy ending!

I’ve always loved ghost stories and murder mysteries, as well as urban fantasy tales where magic and creatures lurk in the shadows. Cape May is said to be one of the most haunted towns on the coast, with ghosts from shipwrecks, pirates, tragedy and lost loves—and some who just didn’t want to leave when their vacation time was up! Erik can see ghosts, but not talk to them. He sometimes also gets visions when he touches objects that have been part of a crime or trauma, letting him see what happened near the item at the time. Ben believes him about the ghosts—almost everyone in Cape May, including Ben, has seen a ghost or two. But when the spirits are linked to unsolved crimes, Ben and Erik need to solve the mystery fast, or risk becoming ghosts themselves!

Treasure Trail is the first in a new series. If you’ve read my Badlands and Witchbane series, you’ll see familiar characters make cameo appearances, since all of my characters and series overlap and cross over, including characters from my non-romance urban fantasy series that I write as Gail Z. Martin. It’s one big spooktacular universe!

“What the hell did you pack in these boxes? Rocks?” Sean Meirlach shifted the heavy moving box on his shoulder. Sean looked and sounded like the Jersey Shore guy he was, brawny and blunt.

“Books,” Ben replied. “You know, those rectangular paper things? Ever read one?” The teasing was good-natured. Ben Nolan had spent most of his summers working for his cousin’s mom, and they were thick as thieves. Which, Ben reflected, was a poor analogy for an ex-cop-turned-former-private-investigator. And now, at least for this summer, a vacation rental manager in beautiful Cape May, New Jersey.

“Yes, dumbass. I’ve read lots of books. And not just the ones with pictures in them,” Sean said with a smirk. Sean played up his bad boy persona, but Ben knew his cousin had plenty of brains, hustle, and street smarts.

“Good to know. I’d hate to have to break it to Aunt Meg that her favorite son was illiterate.”

Sean snorted. “Favorite son? I’m her onlyson, asshole. And she’s already pissed at me because I just want to run my food truck in Wildwood. Which is why you’re doing me a huge solid, taking over the family business.”

“Whoa, there! Hold up. I’m here for the summer. Justthe summer. I said I’d see how it went. No promises.”

“Just the summer? You sure brought a lot of shit with you if it’s just for the summer.” Sean set the box down a little harder than necessary on a table in the upstairs apartment over the rental office, which would be Ben’s home for the next few months. Ben dumped the tangle of odds and ends he had carried up from the rented van and flopped onto the couch. He had put most of his things in storage when he left Newark and brought what he didn’t want to do without, or what the apartment didn’t have. Sean had driven the truck up to Cape May, while Ben drove his black Mustang, packed to the roof.

He owed Sean a lot for helping him move—and, if truth be told, for pushing him as the perfect candidate for the job to Aunt Meg.

“Don’t screw up the master plan, dude!” Sean chided. “You’re sick of the big city and getting shot. And I need a little of that good life, somewhere not quite as buttoned-down.” He reached for a bottle of water and took a swig. “I love this town, but I need to stretch my wings. And the vibe in Wildwood is different. People come for the Pier and the Boardwalk and the rides. More singles, not just families. And they all have to eat!”

Sean’s truck, Put A Ring On It, specialized in kickass onion rings, which went on everything—burgers, hot dogs, chicken wings, even chili. The combination of great food, a catchy name, and Sean’s outgoing personality had made for a very successful launch.

I’ve just been enjoying this author’s books so much. Happened upon one audio by accident, and have been working my way through them here and there. I love a little supernatural, and a little mystery with my romance, and Morgan Brice brings all of that.

In the case of (pun intended) Treasure Trail, we also get some historical including antiques, so this book hit all of my buttons. The mystery portion was a bit convoluted, and lost me a little a few times, but overall, it was exciting, and had current badies-so they weren’t literally chasing ghosts-and some supernatural aspects thrown in.

Ben was a bit tough to win over initially, but Erik was able to get him to understand a bit more of what their world consisted of. Throw in some sexy times and you end up with a fun, sexy thriller, and makes you want to dig around into that universe even more…which I might have done. 😉

Cold Pressed by Allison Temple: New Release Review with IG Giveaway

July 17, 2019 by Denise

No strings attached is all Oliver can offer. He’s hiding a broken heart that holds him back from diving into a new relationship, but he’ll go on a blind date to make his family happy. Just one date, though; he doesn’t have time for love to derail his plans.

Divorced and demoted to the night shift, Nick has his own problems. He’s got an ex-wife who needs him and a kid with one foot in juvie. The last thing Nick needs is to butt heads—or other body parts—with a tempting hipster who wears a sad smile on their blind date.

Their chemistry can’t be denied, though, in an argument or in bed. No strings sex is uncomplicated and that’s what Nick and Oliver need. But getting into bed together is one thing. Staying out of each other’s hearts soon becomes so much more complicated than either one imagined.

Cold Pressed is an 80k contemporary MM romance. It features a smoldering bisexual single dad, a broken-hearted hipster with a thing for beet juice, and a friends-with-benefits arrangement that blooms into the HEA you’ve been looking for.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

First things first… I was skeptical coming into this one because I was not a fan of the first one in the series. I’d luckily forgotten most of it or I might’ve passed this one up. I’m so glad I didn’t!

In this one, we have Seb’s brother Oliver, remember him? It’s okay if you don’t, I didn’t in the beginning… he’s moved to Seacroft after his long-time partner left him high and dry after talking him into quitting his job to open a juice cleanse bar… it’s a lifestyle, really, but, it was hard to get it started, especially because it wasn’t really Oliver’s dream, but Coopers (the ex, he’ll have very little page time and really just cuz he pops up sporadically, he’s not too important, thankfully)….

Nick works dispatch at the firehouse across from the farmers market where Oliver is set up and their first meeting wasn’t a good impression on either of them. Nick has a lot of baggage, an ex-wife, a troubled teenager and a job that he was watching from a desk due to an injury on the job… when Oliver gets his car towed after a long night shift, he’ll admit that he wasn’t so friendly when they first met…. Or the second time they met when his buddy/coworker Brian sets him up on a blind date with the gorgeous jerk who got his car towed!

Thankfully, after the initial shock wore off, the two guys were able to have some wine and get to know each other. They were about as opposites as two people could be, but you know what they say about opposites and all that… while they didn’t see a future beyond maybe messing around, neither had the time to devote anything more than that anyway, what with Oliver trying to get his failing business up and running and Nick trying to keep his sully teenager out of juvie without letting Oliver in on the more personal problems in his life… they’d agreed to that, not getting personal, but it was hard for them to stay away from each other… I kinda loved that too.

Now, Nick’s son… I saw that coming… maybe not the how… but the why…. I would’ve liked to have throttled him about a half dozen times. As a mother of a 14 and 15 year old (though, 16 in August)…. He was so disrespectful and hateful and I just wanted to beat the attitude out of him. Some of the things he said to Nick was unforgivable… child or not, he knew the shots he was firing when he ran his mouth, and did he even apologize, ever? I don’t remember it if he did. Just like Oliver and Seb’s dad in the last one, Nick’s son, Hayden was a big pain in the butt for me. I’m glad he got his stuff worked out, but he never redeemed himself for me…. I’m also glad their dad wasn’t in this book like he was in Seb’s, because I would’ve stopped reading immediately, if he was.

I’m curious to see about Avery though… the ginger twink, as Seb called him. I kinda hope he’s next! I hope he does something about the town meeting people too, they never got the karmic kick back they deserved either… Jerks!

Overall though, watching these two fall for each other and then lean on each other when they both needed each other was sweet. I kind of fell in love with Oliver myself. He was so patient and understanding and …. Did I mention patient? He’d have had to have been with Hayden.

It was a really sweet story and one very much worth the read.

Whether I knew it then or not, I’ve been a writer since the second grade, when I wrote a short story about a girl and her horse. My grandmother typed it out for me and said she’d never seen so many quotation marks from a seven-year-old before. I took that as a challenge and have tried to break that record in all the stories I’ve taken on since then. It’s good to have goals, right?

I live in Toronto with my very patient husband and the world’s neediest cat. I try to split my time between writing, community theater stage management, and traveling anywhere that has good wine. Tragically, this leaves no time to clean the house.

Never a Hero by Marie Sexton: New Release Review

July 16, 2019 by Denise

Owen Meade is in need of a hero. Sheltered, ashamed, and ridiculed by his own mother for his sexuality, his stutter, and his congenital arm amputation, Owen lives like a hermit, rarely leaving his apartment. He hardly dares to hope for more… until veterinarian Nick Reynolds moves in downstairs.

Charming, handsome Nick steals past Owen’s defenses and makes him feel almost normal. Meeting his fiery, determined little sister, June, who was born with a similar amputation, helps too. June always seems to get her way—she even convinces Owen to sign up for piano lessons with her. Suddenly the only thing standing between Owen and his perfect life is Nick. No matter how much he flirts, how attracted to Owen he seems to be, or how much time they spend together, Nick always pulls away.

Caught between his mother’s contempt and Nick’s stubbornness, Owen makes a decision. It’s time to be the hero of his own story, and that means going after what he wants: not just Nick, but the full life he deserves.

Another re-release. I read it the first time but I couldn’t tell you what they changed for this re-release. I can tell you what they should have changed tho.

Anyway, back to Tucker Springs. I kind of want to visit there. Owen is your typical closeted guy, mostly because his mother is overbearing and evil. Seriously, think Mommy Dearest for this woman. He also has a genetic amputation of one of his arms. He was just born that way, nothing below the elbow. He is totally ashamed and embarrassed of it (see Mommy Dearest) and has basically become a recluse.

Until Dr Hottie moves in below him. The local vet with three dogs and a secret. BUT his sister has the same genetic amputation on the opposite arm, so he gets it.

Dr Hottie, aka Nick, runs hot and cold with poor Owen though. This in the closet virgin has someone paying attention to him, but then goes cold. That messes with a guy.

Nick’s sister is a pretty hilarious addition to the story. I really enjoyed her and her complete opposite reaction to her arm as Owen.

We finally find out why Nick is so hot and cold. And I totally get it. But also, for a rewrite, things could have been said or changed or pointed out without losing the integrity or changing the story.

A quick, enjoyable read overall though. I like no so perfect characters- especially with something like genetic amputation. When do you see that in a book?

Burning For You (Neighborhood Shindig #2) by A.M. Arthur: New Release Review

July 15, 2019 by Denise

Bran Foxwell has crushed on Joel Fisher from afar for years, and now that Joel is happily in love with another guy, Bran has lost his chance. But when uber-sexy Keenan Pratt stumbles over an upset Bran, it’s the perfect opportunity for a no-strings hookup. Except sex with Keenan is hotter and more intense than Bran ever imagined, and despite their no-strings agreement, both men agree to an actual date.

As the middle triplet, Keenan Pratt is devoted to his brothers and they’ve spent the last ten years supporting and protecting each other. When Keenan has the chance to screw around with his own long-time crush Bran, it’s an itch he can’t wait to scratch. But there’s chemistry there neither of them expects and, slowly but surely, what should have been a single hookup turns into more.

But when their family is targeted, the Pratt brothers circle the wagons hard, and Keenan pulls away from Bran exactly when he should be leaning on the other man. Bran wants to be there for Keenan, but old habits run deep and if Keenan can’t learn to trust, he risks losing the best relationship he’s ever had.

Welcome to Neighborhood Shindig, a friendly place where you can snack on a lamb kebab while getting your hair done, pick up your favorite herbal tea blend, and then go listen to live music under the pavilion. We’re happy to have you.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

These books are so fun. They are meant to be read in order, so definitely do that if you haven’t read book 1.

Book 2 brings us the story of Bran- who formerly crushed on Joel (book 1) and Kennan, one of the Pratt triplets-who has been crushing on Bran.

They start off with a quick and dirty one off behind one of the food trucks late one night. Poor Keenan wants more but won’t ask. Bran doesn’t think he wants more, but really he does. They kind of fall into a tentative relationship.

What was so fun about this one is that there were so many other characters in their lives who didn’t take a back seat. We learn more about all 3 Pratt brothers. not only as a family, but one of the other brothers also starts a relationship. So this is almost a two for one romance story.

Keenan and Bran also go out and do stuff. Like a regular couple! Except “as friends” at first. That quickly gets put aside though.

Of course the sex scenes are hot- sweet zombie jesus that first one behind the food truck. Dayum. But they are also very real as a couple. They only have one day off together. They both work their butts off. No one demands more time or attention. They are just two guys who fall in love.

These books are super fun. They are quick reads at about 150 pages each. Book 3 is coming soon (yay!) and there are more after that. I think after they are all out I will go back and do a reread of them all one after the other. Because they really are a continuing story.

I found the audiobook of Badlands (Book 1) by accident. I hadn’t heard of the series, the author or the narrator. But I had an audible credit burning a whole in my pocket, so I took a chance, because I have been burning through mysteries lately. I really enjoyed book 1. I loved Kale Williams’ narration of what was already a good story…I even took it outside (which I never do with audiobooks) while I was cutting down a ton of trees in the backyard. So, I knew that I wanted another chance at Simon and Vic.

Vic honestly took me a while to even like in book 1. However, once we got there, I enjoyed how he cared for Simon, and yet still let him be his own man, recognizing his gifts, and letting him be the person he was. And it continued to show in Lucky Town. Vic’s close knit family was the perfect offset for Simon’s challenging one. By wrapping Simon into their fold, it helped to enhance their new family of two.

Of course, the mystery wrapped up nicely, utilizing the skills of both sleuths to catch and disarm the killer. I do enjoy how Morgan throws in unexpected little glitches in the mysteries. Ones that wouldn’t happen in a “normal” setting, but since Simon has psychic skills, then it can be whatever the author chooses to do.

The narrator did another good job of keeping distinct voices as he read, and allowed the story to play out. I am enjoying Kale’s narration, and am looking forward to listening to more of his work.

Lucky Town is a fun town I wouldn’t mind revisiting again and again, no matter where these two men end up.

I love top 5 posts. They’re fun and it isn’t me talking about my book and why I think you should read it. We all get enough of those posts and I get tired of writing them. 🙂 So I thought I would write about my Top 5 special places in the world. These are ones that have a very special meaning for me.

1) Willow Alaska – My aunt had a cabin there and I spent many happy hours boating and swimming in the lake. (The swimming was when I was a kid and didn’t know what real cold felt like)
2) Albuquerque NM – My dear friends BA and Julia live there and we always have an amazing time
3) S Lake Tahoe CA – A dear friend of my aunts lived there and she gave me a refuge of sorts when I was trying to figure things out as a relatively young adult
4) Ludington, Michigan – I spent part of my teenage years there, but this is before that, when my family used to vacation there. We camped, hiked, and basically learned to grow up under the trees on the shores of Lake Michigan.
5) Carlisle PA – This is home and where I have lived longer than anywhere else in my life. And its been with my husband. So much has happened int he 16 years we’ve been here that its hard a list them all.

Siiiiiigh, how I love this author and his way of writing the sweetest dads.

In this one, we meet Newton, who was on the ground when the towers were hit on 9/11, and he did his part to help in the way that he could and was injured from it, not only physically, but mentally as well. Having flashbacks is almost as bad as his scarred foot and constant pain, causing him to limp with a cane. He’s forty-two and has adopted two of the cutest, well-behaved kids, a boy and a girl that also has physical handicaps that made it harder for them to get adopted. Not with Newton, though, he loved them immediately and you can see it throughout the entire story. Love that.

Now, Newton is a social worker and he’s working a case with a woman who’s in-laws are trying to get her kids out of spite, and Newton knows just the person to help, although he’s very busy and turns him away at first… that’s how we meet Chase… a family attorney that has children’s best interest at heart not only because it’s morally right, but because of his own childhood that broke my heart for him.

Thankfully he has an amazing mother, which is more than I can say for Newton… which sucks, because she plays a side part in this story that was more annoying than anything. She’s a basketcase that uses her religion and Newton’s sexuality to cause trouble… I wish we’d have gotten a better karmic smackdown in her face, but I’m petty and vindictive and mother or not, that woman was awful. Prepare to not like her.

Now, Newton needing Chase’s help, he bribes him a little bit with a homecooked meal to meet the mother and two kids that need his help and that’s how things with them start. At dinner, a medical emergency with Newton’s son has them spending time together outside of the professional setting and it was just easy to fall for
Newton and his kids, especially seeing how loving of a father he is and how he’s willing to put himself on the back burner to make his kids happy. It’s sweet and admirable and Chase is smitten with them all.

Things get complicated when the guys find out they’re working on the same case, but they handle it like adults and though things are rocky for a minute, it gets resolved quickly. I like the low angst and the mature way things are handled in
Andrew’s stories…. Little drama, little frustration…. I like that the couple is a bit older and don’t play games or let their pride get in the way of not communicating and unnecessary problems….

Overall, it’s a cute read with adorable kids and a sweet dad who finds love for them all…. Perfect!

Shadows Never Lie (Shadow Duet Book 1) by Lark TaylorMy review:Ok, going into this knowing that there is a book 2.....And I just have to start by saying I really appreciated that they are identical twins who don't get along. So often they are BFF and twin telepathy and all that. And it does happen. But not always.I have to admit I was sucked in from the start. Especially since the first chapter was present day and then chapter two starts the back story. Just from chapter 1 I wasn't expecting their younger years to be as they were. And I really wanted to hate Dominick. But once more information about his life came to light AND how he started treating Ryan, I had a soft spot for him. Max (Ryan's twin) on the other hand, can go scratch. It will take a lot for him to redeem himself in book 2 if that even happens.I kind of saw the cliffhanger coming. I still wasn't prepared. Oh my heart just broke. And I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! Good thing book 2 comes out in 2 weeks...4 pieces of eye candy ... See MoreSee Less

His confidant. His right- hand. His best friend. The brother he would choose.I’ve been cast aside, relegated to the shadows. Forced to watch as Max and Dominic get everything they want. Everything I secretly want. But then, Dominic suddenly sees me and issues an offer I can’t refuse. A challenge, actually. One he never expects me to follow through on.With anyone else, I wouldn’t have considered it. But I’ll be damned before I let Dominic get the better of me.It has me sinking to my knees. Literally.A decision that changes everything.Dominic pulls me out of the shadows, and I never want to go back. But it’s not the shadows I need to be afraid of.No, it’s the path that leads somewhere far darker than I could ever have imagined. Avalanche (Ricochet Ridge) by Jillian Wray My reviewI really liked these two characters and how they aren't exactly what you expected.First, yes they are step brothers. But they are 4 years apart AND Stone left when he was 18. You can extrapolate that there wasn't even a crush between these two guys until this book. Hero worship, yes. Romantic crush, nah.Stone, kind of a hot shot on the mountain because he is part of the blasting crew who set charges to trigger avalanches when no one is on the mountain. He is obviously good looking and popular, but the outside doesn't necessarily match the inside. And Hanlon, babied his whole life because he has a mild case of cerebral palsy, but he also grew into a independent college senior who has a gym body, is confident, out and proud. The quiet kid grew into a confident adult and the confident kid turned into a quiet adult. There was animosity between the step brothers for different reasons. But once they pushed past that and they started feeling things, it got interesting.Again, role reversal of the stereotypical characters. And that made it so fun.It sucked that they basically had to stay in the closet. Because of family and because of work. But we all know that doesn't last forever. And I totally understand their parents feeling the way they do. But like good parents, they found acceptance in their hearts. The CP representation was done really well. Showed that there are different levels of CP and even when it isn't overtly obvious, there's still a lot that a person has to deal with.AND I learned more about avalanches.4 pieces of eye candy ...
