Trusting Him (The Retreat #2) by L.M. Somerton: Blog Tour, Excerpt and Review

April 9, 2019 by Denise

Luke Redding’s military background is an asset when it comes to managing The Retreat, but it hasn’t helped him find the submissive he longs for. A secluded life in the New Forest, witnessing a stream of happy couples playing out their fantasies, doesn’t provide much opportunity to develop a relationship either. When a friend’s manipulations lead to him taking on silver-haired Skye as a trainee sub, Luke finds it hard to trust in his own ability to provide the guidance Skye needs.

Skye Ingham wants to explore his submissive nature but the noise and crowds at The Underground are overwhelming. He can’t believe his luck to be taken under Luke’s wing and offered a job at The Retreat. As Luke tests his boundaries, Skye trusts him implicitly, but how can he convince his new Dominant to have faith in himself?

Amid the bustle and excitement of a big house party at The Retreat, Luke and Skye edge their way towards a deeper understanding of each other’s needs and desires. But it will take a final leap of faith to secure their future and open a path to love.

It wasn’t dignified, but Luke twisted around in his seat to take a look at his potential employee as he wound his way between the tables. He hadn’t formed an impression of what Skye might look like, but the reality was better than anything Luke’s imagination could have conjured. Skye was slight, delicate, maybe five feet six or seven, no more. His skin was lightly tan, a coloring that Luke guessed came from his heritage rather than the sun. He had no tattoos that Luke could see and considering that all he wore was a short leather kilt, that didn’t leave much room to hide any. The wavy hair Luke had assumed was pale blond was in fact silver-gray, though the boy’s eyelashes and brows were a much darker shade, which made Luke wonder if the silver was natural.

Skye stopped in front of the table facing Luke and Carey. He clasped his hands behind his back and ducked his head. “Gordy said you wanted to see me, Mr. Hoffman.” Skye’s voice was so soft Luke had to concentrate to catch his words.

“I did, Skye. You remember I spoke to you about a job at The Retreat in Hampshire?”

Nodding, Skye darted a quick look at Luke. Luke caught a glimpse of violet-blue eyes before Skye focused his gaze on the carpet once more.

“Well, this is Mr. Redding. He’s in charge of The Retreat. I want you to wait on us over lunchtime and show him what you can do.”

“Hello, Skye,” Luke said, keeping his voice low and trying to project reassurance. “I hear you’ve had excellent training. We have a mixture of guests staying at The Retreat, but they all have something in common. They love their food. We have a dedicated chef and customers can pick their own menus and eat as much as they want. That means a lot of serving both at table and in the guests’ rooms. Do you think you can handle that?”

Skye scuffed his bare toes into the carpet. “Yes, Sir.”

“And you understand that The Retreat caters for men who are in the BDSM lifestyle, just like here at the club?” Skye nodded and a light pink flush bloomed on his cheekbones. “Sometimes, you might be required to wear very little or nothing at all. Does that worry you?”

“No, Sir.” Skye’s response was barely audible.

Luke wanted to make eye contact with the shy young man but Skye kept his gaze lowered.

“Remove your kilt, Skye,” Carey ordered.

Luke tightened his grip on his drink. He expected Skye to bolt but instead he undid the buckle at his hip, let the leather garment drop to the floor then stepped out of it.

“Hands behind your back,” Carey instructed.

Luke glanced around the restaurant. Almost every man in the place had turned to watch. Skye stood absolutely still, clad only in the mesh thong that was issued to all the serving staff at The Underground to wear under their kilts.

“Fetch two menus, please.”

Luke watched, entranced, as Skye walked away, hips swaying. He might as well have been naked for all the coverage his underwear gave him. He had natural grace and if it weren’t for the slight tension in his shoulders, Luke might have believed he was entirely comfortable following Carey’s orders.

“You’re testing him. Why?” Luke didn’t take his eyes away from Skye as he collected two menus and returned to the table.

“Because you need to be confident that he will do as you ask, when he’d prefer to run and hide.”

“He’s attracting a lot of attention.”

“Are you surprised?”

“Not at all. He’s stunning.”

Carey’s smile turned into a smirk. “Then you can handle him from now on.”

I really do enjoy this author’s writing, and this book was no exception. One thing that the author always shows within her books is character growth and change.

Skye, at the beginning of the book, was very shy and seemed to stay away from most people, and throughout the book, although his shyness seemed to dissipate some, he became a friend to everyone at The Retreat. He was able to find himself as the sub he wanted to be, even discovering kinks that worked for him that he had no idea would be a kink for him.

Luke, who seemed to not want any sort of relationship, until his eyes landed on Skye, immediately found the man he wanted. Becoming the Dom for Skye seemed to come naturally to him.

One thing I liked is that the age difference between the two men was never a factor. Sometimes, age differences become a large part of the issues in a book like this. It was not. It was mentioned, with a couple of nods to the refractory period of youth 🙂 and then they moved on.

I’ve been enjoying this series, and am hoping to see more of the characters on my kindle very soon.

The One I Want by Megan Slayer: New Release Review

March 26, 2019 by Denise

Book one in the Must Love Dogs series.

Who knew love could be found at the dog park?

Cameron Johnson wants to fall in love. He’d also like the man he’s interested in to like dogs, too. Why? He considers his black Lab, Winston, to be family. If the dog and the guy don’t get along, the deal is off. Except there’s one man who’s caught Cameron’s attention…and he’s got a Collie.

Josh McDowell didn’t start visiting the dog park to find a date. He wanted to exercise his Collie, Dolly. His dog, though, has other ideas. Once she meets Winston, she’s smitten. His owner is rather easy on the eyes, too. Josh gathers his nerve and makes the first move. Cameron is his kind of man—sweet, quiet, smart and a dog person. Their connection is strong, but with Josh’s insecurities and Cameron’s fear of commitment, will it last?

Amazon

I wanted to absolutely love this one. I mean look at that cover! Two dogs feature prominently, more so than the two men. And those two dogs fell in love instantly, similar to their owners.

I liked the book, and I felt horrible at the treatment that Cameron dealt with from his ex, even when the ex decided he had to have Cameron back. I did find though that, in my opinion, I thought it took him too long to stand up to that horrible man. If he felt so strongly about his dog, and his ex clearly hated the dog, it seemed like there should have never been a moment when he vacillated. It should have been over at that moment.

That being said, Cameron and Josh seemed to come together very well. They connected through their love of their dogs, and from there the connection between the two grew stronger, despite their differing job issues.

In the end, their dogs brought them together, and there was no doubt that all four ended up with their HEAs. I’m looking forward to the next in the series of this book.

Merry-Go-Round by L.M. Somerton: New Release Review

March 25, 2019 by Denise

Book two in the Fairground Attractions series

Even the brightest places have shadows.

Stevie is sweet and shy—the only hint of an independent spirit comes from his lilac hair. For years he’s harboured a crush on his best friend, Adam, who is everything Stevie isn’t. The problem? When it comes to love, Adam is a bit slow on the uptake.

On top of that, Stevie fears the escaped killer known as Harlequin is targeting his friends, and clings to his role managing the merry-go-round for some semblance of normality. But someone is watching from shadows even the summer sun can’t penetrate.

Realising that life can be all too short, Adam takes steps to ensure that Stevie will be his. All his protective instincts kick in when Stevie attracts some unwanted—and very dangerous—attention, but he can’t take care of him alone. The group of friends needs to band together because the bright lights and whirling horses of the merry-go-round won’t be enough to keep Stevie alive. Some killers are far too good at hiding in plain sight.

Amazon

This novella series is about a group of college men who are spending their summer working at a local theme park. So far one has met his love while also finding a dead body, while two of them finally find their HEA together, while dealing with more death and bad guys.

I’m enjoying this series. Has some elements of BDSM, although very little on screen, some suspense, and a group of men who have all touched each other’s lives.  My best guess as a reader is the the finality of Harlequin will come at the end of the series, but I’m going to love these guys the entire way there.

They are hopeful, funny, and give each other tons of grief over the smallest things. I laughed a bit during this one as Stevie, the shy one finally gets the man he has always wanted.

I can’t wait to see what is next for these guys.

The New World by J.P. Bowie: New Release Review

December 16, 2018 by Denise

Jamie finds his life and possible destiny irrevocably intertwined with Tanaka, a Choctaw warrior and shaman, but danger lies all around in a land troubled by unrest and war.

When Jamie finally reaches the Americas, he is a changed man—one whose innocence has been replaced by a keen sense of self-preservation and a determination to survive, no matter what. That determination is challenged when he is charged with piracy and must choose between a death sentence or life as an indentured slave.

Choosing to live, he suffers the humiliation of slavery until he is rescued by Tanaka, a Choctaw warrior-shaman. Jamie joins the Choctaws against the soldiers of King George, who are trying to force them off their land. It isn’t long before Jamie and Tanaka’s admiration for each other becomes a love that will shape their destinies.

This is the second book in what looks like a 3 part series, but it’s pretty much a stand alone if you haven’t read book 1 (I didn’t). Jamie arrives in the new world as captain of his ship and almost immediately runs afoul of British troops in the woods of Georgia. He’s arrested and sold into indentured servitude to a cruel farmer. He’s rescued by Tanaka, a young native warrior who’s lost his home and family to the same British troops Jamie has made enemies of.

Jamie and Tanaka quickly trust each other and become close friends and more. They work together with the remaining native tribe to fight off the wave of troops that have come to claim the Choctaw land in the name of England.

This was a quick story to read, and outside of the conflict between the natives and the English, there wasn’t much in the way of angst between the main characters. There’s an odd element of the supernatural as we learn Jamie and Tanaka have dreamt of each other for some time before meeting. Each “knew” the other on sight. I feel like this story should have been one larger book, with more of the characters and action fleshed out. This was just okay for me.

From Upstairs to Downstairs by J.P. Bowie: Quick Review

October 31, 2017 by Denise

When everything is taken from you, including the memory of who you are, what possible chance is there for happiness?

Edward Lazenby has it all – a rich grandfather, a beautiful home, days spent riding his favorite horse in Hyde Park. What he doesn’t have, and feels he never will, is handsome Thomas Marsden, a man who, at first, seems repulsed by Edward’s forwardness when they meet. Dalliances with members of the same sex in Victorian England can lead to scandal or even imprisonment, so Edward and a few close friends have formed their own Club where they can meet without fear of persecution.

When Edward’s grandfather dies, Edward is heir to his estate but before he can lay claim to it, he is brutally assaulted, his injuries resulting in complete memory loss. Months later, Thomas Marsden finds him working as a stable boy on a country estate. Thomas takes him back to London, hoping to find a way to have Edward’s memory restored to him, and remind him that just before he disappeared, they had declared their affection for each other.

Can the two men build a life together or will Edward’s disability be too much of a hurdle to happiness?

This is a historical romance about Edward, his wealthy grandfather’s heir, and Thomas, a new friend that Edward is wildly attracted to but is unsure if their preferences are aligned since Thomas is engaged to be married. Fear not, the two do in fact have a mutual attraction and just when things begin to look promising for the pair, Edward is brutally attacked by thieves and left for dead. We later find him on a country estate with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Edward’s friends are left grieving after his disappearance as evidence of the crime point to Edward having been killed, and Thomas just can’t get over him. Eventually Edward is found and brought back to his home. It’s a long, slow recovery as he attempts, with the help of Thomas, to remember his former life, and solve the mystery of who tried to have him killed and why.

This book is pretty smooth sailing as far as the romance goes. These two like each other, aren’t afraid to tell each other so, they find each other again and while Edward doesn’t exactly remember Thomas, they start on sexy times right away. Which may or may not squick you out, but I was fine with that. There is some mystery as to the reason for the attack but everything is solved rather speedily. A perfectly easy, quick read that has some nice love scenes and won’t cause too much angst for the reader.

A Master For Michael by Morticia Knight: Release Day Review

September 12, 2017 by Denise

Finding a Master for Michael won’t be easy, but Javier is determined that his boy will have the best—even if it means letting him go.

The Hampton Road Club is a secret gathering place for men of a more sadomasochistic nature. The 1920s might be roaring, but certain practices are still frowned upon in open society. Michael’s job is to greet the club members as they arrive and to report directly to the club manager, Javier. Sometimes, his direct contact with Javier has nothing to do with the club members and everything to do with submitting to the strict Master.

Javier would give anything to keep Michael as his permanent boy, but he owes his boss, Saul a great personal debt for helping him when he was at his lowest. Saul taught him that professionalism is the key to keeping things running smoothly at the club. He knows Saul would be greatly disappointed if he were to ever find out about what goes on between him and the club greeter behind closed doors. That’s why he’s never revealed to Michael how he really feels and why he must do the one thing for which he’d never thought he’d have the courage: Give Michael away to a new Master.

Michael is the greeter at a secret men’s sex club in 1920s LA. He’s a sweet kid who’s had a harsh upbringing and while down on his luck was befriended by one of the club’s masters, Javier, and given a home and a job. Those parts are told through flashback. I don’t think it’s spoilery to say that in the year and a half that since Michael came to the club, he’s become Javier’s sub on the down low, and has fallen in love with the kind Dom. Javier, trying to sustain a level of professionalism in front of the staff and in particular club owner Saul, keeps Michael and the relationship at arm’s length. Saul is kind of a bright guy and suspects that under Javier’s cool façade run strong feelings for Michael. Saul sets in motion a plan to see if he’s right.

This is a very short story, and being BDSM, it’s not my usual cup of tea. We quickly learn Javier and Michael are in love with each other and Javier’s fear of disappointing Saul keeps him from making his relationship with Michael more official. While this hasn’t made me a fan of BDSM, it certainly didn’t make me hate the genre and it’s a sweet story, really. Morticia Knight fans will probably want to give this one a try.

✨EXCERPT: BE MY RUIN by Davidson King releasing July 22nd!#PreOrderHeremybook.to/BMRpreorder “Took you long enough.” Penn grinned. He was in the middle of the bed, beautifully naked. Candles were strategically placed around the room, and he was shaking a can of whipped cream.“My apologies, had I’d known dessert was waiting for me, I’d have pushed Dean out sooner.”He chuckled. “No, Gideon, I’m not dessert.” He angled the can my way. “You are.” He patted the bed that I only just realized had a towel on it. “Hop on.”“Can I shower first?”He shook his head. “You can shower when I’m done with you…you’ll need it.”While I preferred to wash, I’d taken one this morning so I wasn’t gross. I wasn’t about to ruin Penn’s plans, so I quickly removed my clothes and tossed them onto the ottoman. Penn’s gaze traveled the length of my body, and his dick was hard and weeping by the time I crawled onto the towel.“How do you want me, Chef?”He bit his lip, eyes twinkling with mirth. “On your back, legs spread.”I did as ordered, never looking away from the gorgeous man who, judging by his expression, was going to devour me.“Not that I mind, but what’s this all about?”He jiggled the can but stopped before he sprayed any of it on my skin. “Um, the kids are gone, the house is empty, it’s Friday, the weather is hot, I’m human…take your pick as to why I want to eat you up, Gid.”While it was true—we always wanted each other; two years hadn’t diminished that feeling, and I was sure a hundred more wouldn’t either—there was something Penn was scheming…and I was here for it.“Okay, have your wicked way with me, then.”✨Catch up on book 1, Be My Monster, available in KU, before book 2 releases: a.co/d/02NkGJDH#davidsonking #mmromance The Author Agency ... My review of: Sweet Devotion by Riley HartIf you read the first three books in this series- all MM- you had to love Aislin. Not only the only woman, but the youngest. Who was under her father's thumb but is now happily living life at college. And through those three books we know that Aislin and Zuri are together. But we didn't know the STORY. Now we do.We get a novella that tells a full story- from when they met to the conflict that they have to deal with and a lovely prologue (I love a flash forward prologue!) without sacrificing story, dialogue or arc.And who knew Rory would turn into a giant teddy bear? I mean, a mafia teddy bear but still. In the end, Zuri found herself a family, Aislin found herself and we were left totally satisfied.*trigger warning* there was a murder or two that seemed a bit gratuitous, even for mafia. Paralyze by JJ Asher...my reviewDisclaimer that I did not read book 1 so some things came as a surprise to me. This book is more complex than you think at the beginning. Tek really has a big arc that is played out on the pages that make him deal with his missing best friend, his parents, his missing brother and the sudden appearance of his best friend's little brother, Carey.Carey also has a good arc in that he was the kid who took off at 18 and kind of bummed his way around the world wherever the surf was good. But missing his big brother sent him home to Washington state. And a missing brother. There was a lot of emotion in this book. Tek has definitely been through some things and they have shaped the man he is now. Stand offish, no strings attached, with friends he only has because they refuse to give up on him. There are some elements of BDSM toward the end of the story but it is evident, looking back, that they were always there. Just not in a sexual manner. This is a sloooooow burn as Tek refuses to acknowledge his attraction to Carey until it's impossible not to.The only thing that I noticed was that there was a period of time where Tek apparently went off the rails a bit after the thing (no spoilers) happened in the past and it's kind of unresolved. Other than that, well written book and I need to go back and read book 1!4 1/2 pieces of eye candyThe Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less
