No Take Backs (Zone Defense Book 1) by Becca Seymour: New Release Review

December 8, 2021 by Denise

Some things you can’t take back.

If you say those words, get caught glancing at his bulge, or share a heated kiss, it’s game over. The “no take backs” rule strikes, and there’s no way you can backtrack.

That’s the way it’s always been with me and Nate Griffin, my old best friend who thought he could change the rules.

It doesn’t matter that time and distance have pulled us apart. I’ve finally figured myself out and yanked my head out of my backside. Now, if only I can drag myself out of the closet and be the man I want to be for Nate…

But I’m a pro basketball player who has no desire to be a poster boy. Not only that, Nate and I don’t even live in the same country.

Nate, big-hearted guy he is, takes it all in his stride, and I can’t help but wonder if just maybe he’s too good for me. But hell if I can resist him.

It all boils down to: Do I want to take anything back when it comes to Nate Griffin?

Author: Becca Seymour

Book: No Take Backs

Release Date: November 10th, 2021

Series: Zone Defense Book 1

Genre: M/M Romance

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

I’ve enjoyed this author’s books quite a bit, I love sports romance books, and I always love books based in Australia, so there was zero chance I was passing this one up. I wasn’t disappointed. It was all those things, and more.

This book was a friends to (sort of) enemies to friends to lovers book, only really showing about a year of their lives, but these two had known each other since they were 11. Ryan went to play basketball in the US, first at a Division 1 college, then on into the pros. Meanwhile, Nate stayed back in Australia, waited for Ryan, took care of Ryan’s family, ran his father’s store, but had that was just for him. Nate took care of everyone else, and never took care of himself.

When Ryan left, they drifted apart, not really becoming enemies, but not really friends any longer. Ryan’s sister ends up pregnant at 18, and Ryan finds out only from Instagram. (It’s hilarious how he thinks Nate is the father at first.) He then begins the slow process of coming back to his family and Nate.

I really liked this. It wasn’t instant. They didn’t just start talking and everything was okay in a chapter. Ryan had to earn the trust of the people he cared about again, as well he should. It took time, patience and a lot of honesty. Eventually, he came home, to fully win back his man, meet his niece, and reconnect with his family in person.

I enjoyed the realism of their relationship back to each other, from the small texts, to the video calls, and eventually getting visas for Nate to spend time with Ryan in the US as he played. Unfortunately, Ryan refused to come out of the closet. And while Nate didn’t expect him to, it takes a toll on any relationship. They dealt well with it as a couple, staying strong, and slowly Ryan came out just little more to those he cared about.

Great side characters, and if we don’t have X and Y for the next book, I may cry. 🙂 There is obviously a HUGE story there, and I, for one, want to know how it goes.

Definitely recommend if you like found family, re-found family, and a slow burn romance.

Mistletoe Menage (We Three Kings Collection) by Lily Harlem: RB, Release Day Review and Giveaway

December 7, 2021 by Denise

The winter days might be frosty, but a new guy in town is sure to heat up Father Nicholas and Dr. Zach!

Reverend Nicholas Simmons has traveled a bumpy road before landing in the small town of Mindle with his doctor husband. So, when a new, very sexy, very enticing young man shows interest in them both, he’s reluctant to rock the boat.

Zach, however, can’t keep the flashes of desire from his eyes. He’d never cheat, of course not, but visions of hot threesomes dance in his mind. Will Nicholas ever agree? If so, what would it be like? How hard would they all come?

Brandon isn’t looking forward to his first Christmas in Mindle. He’s alone. Exhausted. Friendless. That is, until he meets the Reverend and Zach. From that first moment he’s equal parts fascinated and turned on by them. Sure, they’re older than he is, but that just heightens his lust and increases his need to get hot, sweaty and naked with them.

Will their romance have a backdrop of tinsel and holly? Can three strong, passionate men truly connect with absolute honesty? And on Christmas night, will they each get the ultimate present—one another—under the tree?

Goodreads

Okay, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this holiday series, or from this new to me author. But what an interesting concept. A reverend and his husband, who’ve been together for years, completely monogamous, and are themselves very hot and heavy after all these years, find a third quite by accident.

Nicholas and Zach obviously were still very much in love (I mean…the stairs? DAMN!), and with Nicholas being a reverend, you wouldn’t expect them to invite a third into their bed, couch, living room, between them…you get the idea. 😉 But they do, and honestly it was very sweet. It was done with everyone’s eyes open. No “cheating”, and it was so well done that you could understand how Nicholas and Zach fell for Brandon. He’s young, and fresh, and absolutely knows what he wants.

This novella is sexy, hot and still brings in the joy of Christmas. I’m still scratching my head a little at a reverend being in a throuple, but hey, it’s fantasy, it can be whatever we want, right?

A Spoonful of Sugar (We Three Kings Collection) by AE Lister: RB, Release Day Review and Giveaway

December 7, 2021 by Denise

A kinky interlude over the holidays brings three men closer as their unconventional relationship evolves from casual to serious.

Scott Vernier met Jericho Griffin and Pascal Olejatz at a Halloween party in October and soon became casually involved with the kinky, committed pair.

Over the course of the holidays, the men struggle to find time together outside their busy schedules and finally make space for each other over Christmas week. Scott finds himself craving more of a committed relationship with these wonderful men and tiptoes around the issue to find out if Jericho and Pascal feel the same.

Scott’s dreams of expertly delivered medical play already a vivid reality, the men introduce him to more deliciously subversive scenes including teacher-student role play and invite him to dabble with imaginary non-consent.

Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of enema play and imaginary non-consent.

Amazon

First for Romance

Goodreads

So, I’ve read this author’s bdsm series, Braided Crop Ranch, and that can be quite kinky. However, this novella…this one nearly puts that series in the category of fade to black, in comparison. If you are not a fan of bdsm, and to some this would be very hard core bdsm, this one is not going to be for you. However, if you are a big fan of it, you will find it to be quite descriptive, sexy and kinky AF.

Scott loves medical play, Jericho loves playing doctor, and since Pascal isn’t as much of a fan of being the subject of medical play, this threesome works very well together. When Scott arrives for their holiday together, he is immediately drawn into this game, and loves every second of it. Meanwhile, he really does want a longer term situation with these guys.

There is some consensual non-con, and enema play, so if that isn’t your bag (okay, I had to go there), you will likely want to skip this one.

However, I found the mix of bdsm, and just general enjoyment being with each other to be a good mix. They obviously all enjoyed each other as people, as relationship material, as well as partners in bdsm. Probably a bit more on the bdsm and sex than romance in this novella. But if that is what you are looking for, this may work great for you.

Overall, kinky AF, as they get to know each other in all ways. Clearly this throuple were perfect for each other in all the ways they needed.

The Best Gift by Eli Easton: New Release Review

December 6, 2021 by Denise

THE BEST GIFT – by Eli Easton
With help from a Christmas miracle, two bruised hearts find joy again.

Greg Cabot is the third generation to run Cabot’s Christmas Wonderland and tree farm in rural Vermont. But this year will be his last. Since the death of his son, Sam, in Afghanistan, Greg no longer has the heart to run a business based on holiday cheer. When he picks up a hitchhiking soldier on a snowy night, he finds the help he needs to get his farm through the holidays—and maybe much more.

Sergeant Robbie Sparks doesn’t have much to be thankful for this holiday season. Badly wounded in Afghanistan, he’s spent most of the past year in recovery and was discharged after ten years of service. When fate lands him at Cabot’s tree farm, he feels like he’s fallen into a snow globe reality. Friendly people, gorgeous trees, lots of Christmas kitsch… and Greg Cabot.

Greg believes he’s too heartbroken for romance, but those we love never truly leave us. A little nudge from heaven may help build a bridge for these two men trying to heal. If only they are willing to take that first step.

This stand-alone, long novella is a small town, Christmas cornucopia, May-December, hurt/comfort , military romance stuffed full of family and holiday feels.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

This one breaks your heart, but puts it back together again with pine needles and hot cocoa.

Greg’s broken heart is palpable. His only son was killed in action and after this season he is selling the 3 generation Christmas tree farm. But he is still kind enough to pick up a hitch hiker and offer him a bed for the night. But Robbie makes himself useful and is quickly hired for the season.

Those two broken men lived and worked together, acting awkwardly, until Robbie made a move. Then the classic “while you are here” scenario.

Both of these men just pulled on my heart strings. Robbie is still recovering physically but can’t seem to recover mentally. Greg tries to help, but he doesn’t know the whole story. Robbie doesn’t even know the whole story because he can’t remember.

Oh my god did I cry toward the end of this book. Let it be known that you will need tissues while reading. But it is so worth it in the end.

This was a beautiful story of love, forgiving yourself and Christmas magic.

Breath of Life (Godstone Saga Book 2) by Jocelynn Drake: New Release Review

December 6, 2021 by Denise

Caelan wants his throne back.

The bargain has been struck, and it’s time to return home.

But the situation is worse in Erya than he previously suspected. Betrayal runs deep in the streets of Stormbreak, and finding people he can trust will be treacherous.

He has no choice, though. He’s fighting for his birthright, and maybe even a little revenge if he can get it.

Will the gods come between him and the crown?

Or worse, him and Drayce?

Breath of Life is the second book in the six-book Godstone Saga fantasy series and is not a standalone. The story contains explosions, gods with secret plans, hidden romance, a prince set on revenge, magic, and lots of delicious angst.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

You must read book 1. No way around it. So if you haven’t, stop here.

Ok, book 2 picks up right after book 1. The foursome of Prince (King) Caelan, Drayce, Rayne and Eno are headed back home with some reinforcements from Prince Shey and after Caelan went all God of Storms on the fleet of ships attacking.

Once they return home, they find unexpected allies and unexpected rivals. We also learn more about Eno and Rayne, their backgrounds and families.

War is ugly and this shows the complexities of it, adding in a monarchy or two and some gods and goddesses.

Again, this isn’t much of a romance, but it isn’t meant to be. I fully expect to get happily ever afters at series end, but for now those relationships are secondary at best.

I am quite enjoying this much more than I thought, thanks to the writing and world building of Jocelynn Drake. She is quickly becoming one of my top ten authors as I have really enjoyed everything of hers I have read so far.

And I can’t wait for book 3!

Salvaging Christmas by Brian Lancaster: RB, Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

December 5, 2021 by Denise

For years they have kept the Yuletide Gay Club going with like minded friends until this year grim providence decides to stick in his ugly snout. But just as everything starts to fall apart, the son of the owner turns up and the real fun begins.

Tired with awkward family Christmases, Trevor McTavish and his best friend have planned a getaway each year for twelve close gay friends to enjoy the festive season together in remote country locations around Britain. Far from the maddening crowds. Beautiful Stratham Lodge in Scotland, hugging the shores of Loch Arkaig, is set to be this year’s rental destination.

Except this year, one by one, friends have dropped out. Against their better judgement, they decide to bite the bullet and forge ahead with a much reduced, and somewhat contentious party, which includes Trevor’s formerly gay ex-husband and his new girlfriend.

On the second day, Trevor realises this year’s break is going to be a disaster. But then the son of the lodge owner, Rudy Mortimer, appears and saves the day.

Reader advisory: This book contains mention of homophobia, domestic abuse and sexual assault.

Trevor McTavish loved traditions.

Or, more to the point, new traditions built on old ones. After all, wasn’t that what most of them were, a blend of old and new, built layer upon layer over time? They provided a foundation, something people could rely on, even when everything else around them broke down, or changed unexpectedly, or disappeared entirely from their lives—which seemed to happen to him all too often of late.

Traditions ensured continuity, and even with the few hiccups this year had brought, Trevor loved the Christmas tradition he and Cheryl had created for their friends.

As the sullen driver of the prepaid cab steered in silence through the early morning streets of London, Trevor rested his head against the ice-cold window. Gentle vibrations from the hybrid engine massaged his skull. Already the sky had begun transitioning from purest black as the night shift packed up and daylight took over. Fully alert despite the early hour, he looked for homes with their Christmas lights still burning and gardens or roofs decorated with seasonal figures. A part of him instinctively knew he would get along with the person who had gone to all the effort to put them up, most likely done to make other people smile.

Nothing could shake Trevor’s upbeat mood as the cab turned into the familiar road where the Madison family lived. Since he’d packed last night, the sense of anticipation and excitement at the promise of a road trip with best friends had kept him pumped up and grinning like an inflatable snowman.

Six in the morning on that pre-dawn Friday in December, he climbed out of the overheated car and crunched down onto a pavement of overnight frost. After collecting his luggage from the boot, he pulled out a five-pound note from his wallet and tapped a fingernail on the driver’s window. With a smile, he held up the banknote, ready to wish the man a heartfelt season’s greetings. After all, if the poor guy had to drive a cab at this early hour, he obviously needed the money.

Without even bothering to acknowledge Trevor, the driver pulled away.

Left standing alone in the road, Trevor shrugged and put the fiver back. Perhaps the man had somewhere better to be. Not everyone shared his passion for all things festive.

Humming to himself, he manoeuvred his wheelie luggage up the broken-tiled garden path and prodded the front doorbell. Bing-bongs chimed from somewhere inside. Cheryl Madison’s mother opened the door in her furry-hooded olive parka and mismatching navy Wellington boots. Further at odds with the ensemble, her pink floral nightie peeked out from beneath the jacket.

Trevor almost let out a giggle.

Until he saw the expression on her face.

After a furtive glance at the staircase behind her, Mrs M nodded sharply towards the Volvo out front while handing him a small but deceptively heavy cardboard box. Hauling a larger one from the floor, she strode past him and he trailed after her, the wheels of his luggage clunking arrhythmically on the broken pavement. Only as she unlocked the hatchback and placed her carton inside did she reveal the predicament.

“Hannah’s not coming. She broke up with Cheryl last night. Met someone at their Christmas office party on Tuesday night. Supposedly.”

The way she articulated that final word said everything. Trevor dropped onto the tailgate—causing the car to bounce—and placed his container next to hers. Mrs M stood there studying him, arms folded, appearing to wait for his response. Instinctively, he mirrored her body language and sighed. Of all their friends, he understood only too well the devastating effects of being dumped. Right before their long-anticipated Christmas trip, too. Hannah had always possessed a selfish streak, an immunity to the sensibilities of others. She had often manipulated Cheryl but he’d never thought she would stoop so low.

“Shit. Poor Cheryl. How’s she coping?”

“You’ll see in a minute. Putting on a brave front. I tried to sound surprised when she told me, but something’s not been right for months. The important thing, Trevor, is that we’re down by one more guest.”

“Double shit,” he said, staring down at the road between his legs.

“I’ll let you think about that before I bring out any more boxes, and while I go and put the kettle on,” she said, before heading back to the house.

So much for the Yuletide Gay Club.

I loved the premise of this story. A group of people, LGBTQ+, taking an annual trip over the Christmas holiday as a way to be with people they care about, rather than the required time with family that often won’t go well, and makes you regret every life decision. And for the most part, this book provided that.

Trevor, recently divorced is determined to take this trip, despite all the drop-outs. His best friend goes, despite a recent breakup herself, her mother, who recently lost her long-time lover. Unfortunately, those that were unwanted also went, because Trevor was a bit of a pushover and wouldn’t say no. Trevor’s ex-husband, now straight-ish, with a pregnant wife, who was honestly not a nice person at all. And you couldn’t blame all that on hormones. Trevor’s ex got what he deserved there, to be honest, as no matter how he tried to spin it, he was a jerk.

Rudy, sweet and quick to laugh, but his own sadness from a breakup, was pretty much everything you envision from a man in the highlands…rides up on his trusty steed, shirtless, saving the day. This brought in some definite sexiness. It got hot and heavy at times once Trevor and Rudy took it to the next level.

There were a lot of characters in the book, which made it difficult sometimes to keep track of who was where. However, it felt like with so many characters there should have been a lot more dialogue, a lot more showing rather than telling. This book had a lot of long drawn out descriptions, leaving me skipping entire paragraphs, causing the book to drag in places.

My review for:The Comeback King by Riley HartNot gonna lie, I like football books WAY more than hockey books. As a rule. Heated Rivalry not included.ANYWAY, Riley Hart has written several books with football players and they were all enjoyable. This was no different in that way. What was different is a main character struggling through the unexpected death of their boyfriend and also developing feelings for his dead boyfriend's brother. Yikes.I liked how Hunter acknowledged his guilt over his growing feelings and also realized how different he felt with Lucas than he did with Ellis. He grew a lot through this story. From a kid who idolized his friend's father to a man who stood up for himself, his dead boyfriend and his current boyfriend.Lucas was ready to step aside at a moment's notice, waiting for Hunter to end things. That was heart breaking. He needed someone who was all in with him; something he never had with his family. Both men each had a really great friend behind them. Telling them when they were being dumb, and telling them they were worthy of love. We all need that.So yes, definitely a good one to pick up. And I can't wait for book 2.4 pieces of eye candy ...
