synopsis

Chance “The Chancellor” Gerhardt is a mainstay for Frontier Professional Wrestling. He’s won multiple championships and has the respect of the locker room. But after ten years at the top, Chance is looking for a new challenge. The one he gets, mentoring FPW’s young rookie, is both unexpected and unwanted.

Devin Jacobs is a hot new talent signed by Frontier Professional Wrestling. He’s always been a fan of The Chancellor, and not just because of the older man’s skill in the ring. He has it bad for the steely eyed veteran wrestler. Unfortunately for Devin, The Chancellor isn’t looking to get involved with anyone. Or is he? During long nights traveling and working together, Devin catches more than one secretly admiring glance from The Chancellor…

Devin is determined to earn victories and championships in the ring. But he’d also love the opportunity to win Chance’s heart. Can the two of them navigate their way through the hyper masculinity and backstage politics of professional wrestling to the most important victory of all? Or will their shot at love be defeated 1-2-3?

Christa Tomlinson is a lifelong fan of professional wrestling. When she’s not writing, Christa can be found watching her favorite classic matches or traveling to live wrestling events.

tco-friday five-ish

  1. Showing Him the Ropes is a book about professional wrestling. What was your inspiration for writing this? Is the sport as staged as we’ve heard it is?

My inspiration is the fact that I’m a big ole wrestling nerd. Don’t believe me? Here I am in my twenties after a 16 hour drive to go to Wrestlemania. Awww, baby Christa!

christa-wrestlemaia

Anyhoo. I took a break from writing several years ago because all of my free time was taken up playing roller derby. While I was playing that sport, I broke my leg and found myself with a summer full of free time. I spent it reading and writing wrestling fanfiction, which got me back into writing. And I thought to myself, as much as I love writing about wrestling for fics, why not write an original series about it? So Champions of Desire was birthed in my noggin.

And yes, professional wrestling is scripted. Which means the outcomes of the matches are pre-determined. The men and women in the ring don’t actually hate each other and they’re not trying to kill each other. Think of it as live action theatre. The wrestlers have an end goal and they work together, telling a story in the ring to get to that result. The moves they do are very athletic and can be dangerous. They train and work hard, so don’t go trying to do a pile driver on your friends after you read this book!

  1. Do you have any wrestling celebrity crushes that shaped these characters? Did their on-stage personalities come through in your writing of these characters?

    seth
    Seth Rollins
kota
Kota Ibushi

Haha! I knew you were going to ask this! Actually, I figure most people who know wrestlers will want to know this, so let’s just get it on out of the way. First! I made sure not to actually base my MCs on any real wrestlers. I didn’t want it to read like a fic, you know? But I did have a mix of guys in my head as I wrote. Devin Jacobs is my hot shot young rookie. He’s a bit of a playful flirt. For him I’d say I was inspired by Seth Rollins and Kota Ibushi. Kota for his high flying moves and general adorableness and Seth for his cocky “look at me I’m the coolest” attitude.

John Cena
John Cena

Chance, on the other hand, is at the top of the mountain. But he’s been

regal
William Regal

there awhile and as a result he’s sort of gruff and tired. He’s very muscular and athletic, but also very smart. So for him, I’d say John Cena and William Regal stomped around in my head a bit.

  1. Let’s say I don’t know anything about wrestling (which to be fair, I don’t 🙂 ). How were you able to make sure that the average reader would be able to hang in there and “get” everything?

I tried to pay attention to the wrestling lingo I was using to make sure I gave context clues. I also created a glossary of wrestling terms that will be included in the book. But it’s funny, those words have been a part of my vocabulary for so long that I didn’t realize just how many of them the general public isn’t aware of. You asked me what a turnbuckle was and I was so surprised that wasn’t an everyday word. Ha! Thanks for the heads up there!

  1. What one thing are you most excited about with this book? Okay, you can make it as many things as you want.

Honestly, I’m excited to get to do something creatively with the world that I love so much. It was fun not only writing the story, but deciding on things like Devin’s ring gear and picking his finishing move. I’m also excited to present a romance that shows wrestling as realistically as possible. Or at least, as realistically as someone who isn’t in the business can. I’ve read a few other wrestling romances and struggled to suspend my disbelief on some of the plot points, because I know that would never happen. It’s like a scientist watching a sci-fi movie and flipping out because the characters do an experiment without a control group. (or something else that’s terribly horrifying to scientists.) And last, I’m excited to give the women and men who enjoy both wrestling and romance a chance to read a story set in a backdrop that they love.

  1. Last question is always the fun one. So, wrestling poses…they must be awkward for the “straight” viewer. Give us some of the best poses that make you giggle at all the homo-eroticism in play in such a testosterone fueled industry.Pin attempts nearly always lead to immature laughs. In order to pin someone in wrestling and score the victory, you basically have to lay on top of them. Sometimes you end up with pins like this:ambrollins fcw cesaro 69It’s just so hilarious. Like, what? That’s the best way you could come up with to show you won? Okaaaaaay. ;-)Thanks for having me on and letting me ramble about wrestling!Christa

Checkmate by Nicki Bennett and Ariel Tachna: Release Day Review, Guest Post and Giveaway

July 25, 2016 by Denise

CheckmateFS_v2synopsis

When sword for hire Teodoro Ciéza de Vivar accepts a commission to “rescue” Lord Christian Blackwood from unsuitable influences, he has no idea he’s landed himself in the middle of a plot to assassinate King Philip IV of Spain and blame the English ambassador for the deed. Nor does he expect the spoiled child he’s sent to retrieve to be a handsome, engaging young man.

As Teodoro and Christian face down enemies at every turn, they fall more and more in love, an emotion they can’t safely indulge with the threat of the Inquisition looming over them. It will take all their combined guile and influence to outmaneuver the powerful men who would see them separated… or even killed.

denise review

Way back when I started reading romance novels, I read historicals. Any that I could get my hands on. And I still to this day love historical romance novels. There aren’t a lot of them in the m/m romance world, so when I see one I grab it like I’m dying of thirst, and I just came upon an oasis. This one didn’t disappoint.

The book is set in the year 1624, during the height of the Spanish Inquisition, when sodomy was a crime punishable by death, and the right words placed in an ear could cause a man to be arrested, tried, convicted, then paid with his life, all in the period of days.

Teodoro fought his attraction to Christian for quite a while, not because he had issues being with a man, but because he knew that it would prove a distraction for him as protector. Christian, however, was not deterred and when they finally were able to give in to their passion, it was that much sweeter, because by that point the love had grown so strong between them.

There were swordfights to the death, as well as treason which began the journey for these men. And the vocabulary was amazing. To have that much written word be so timely and accurate, for someone who has always enjoyed historical novels, was amazing to read. It never took me out of the story, in fact it kept me fully engaged. Even when I looked up a word because I wanted to know what it was, or what the origin was, it kept me involved in the story. (In fact, one of my favorites was seeing a word that became an origin for pedophile-weird I know, but I love vocabulary.) These authors mastered the vocabulary so well that it flowed seamlessly through the book, which is not always the case.

There was one piece that did pull me from the story, at least in the first 30% or so, until I became used to it. The entire book has changing point of view, quite often paragraph to paragraph. This was challenging as a reader, as I hadn’t experienced that type of POV change before. It did point out to me that sometimes I do skip over the names of who the narrator is, as I quite often had to read back to the beginning sentence in the paragraph to make sure I understood who’s POV I was reading.

All in all, a very engaging read, with dynamic characters, that evolved through the book. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more in this series world.

Checking on Checkmate

When writing a historical novel, unless it’s alternative history, it’s expected that you’ll get the facts right and the dates accurate. Only in steampunk can you get away with having your Civil War general use a GPS device to track enemy troop movements. In plotting the All for Love series, we reviewed European history and drafted a timeline of key events that would play into our storylines for each novel. While some elements may seem unlikely—one of our editors questioned whether the king of France and the queens of Spain and England at the time were all children of Marie de Medici (they were)—we were confident the stories would hold up through the mandatory historical content reviews that are part of Dreamspinner’s editorial process.

We hadn’t considered the etymological checking.

Etymology is the history of words or phrases from their earliest recorded usage in the language in which they occur. Failing to check etymology can result in a historical character spouting modern slang, which is guaranteed to pull a reader out of the story even if they’re not quite sure why. So while we hadn’t necessarily considered etymology when writing the stories, the review resulted in some interesting findings.

Checkmate begins in 1624. So while there’s no issue with having our characters refer to “the end justifying the means” (from Machiavelli’s The Prince, written in 1532), or “tilting at windmills” (from Cervantes’ Don Quixote, published in 1605), we were surprised to discover that Christian couldn’t be traveling in Spain as part of his Grand Tour—the phrase wasn’t in use until 1670. That was an easy fix—we just took the reference out. We also made a number of word changes because the terms weren’t in use during the early seventeenth century. A few examples:

  • outfit (1769 or 1852, depending on the source) became garments
  • hypnotized (1843) became stunned
  • sizing up (meaning “estimate” from 1847) became assessing
  • risqué (1867) became bawdy
  • foodstuffs (1872) became victuals
  • needling (1881 in the sense of “to goad”) became baiting

There were a few words we decided to keep, even though the first date of use was slightly later than our timeframe, because they were relatively close (under a hundred years) and we couldn’t find an alternative word that fit as well. These included sardonic (1630s), eclectic (1680s), and rakish (1706).

Even things as simple as everyday household items weren’t always kosher (a term we couldn’t have used, since it dates from 1850). Bedsheet was first used in the fifteenth century and towel in the thirteenth century, so we had no issues there, but washcloth (1863) or washrag (1856) were out. In fact, the whole concept of bathing was questioned as being quite uncommon at the time—and in fact arranging a bath for Christian took quite an effort and was seen, by Esteban at least, as proof that he was nothing but a spoiled, pampered nobleman.

There were several phrases the editor flagged as “too modern sounding” that after consideration we decided to keep. House of cards dated from 1645, but we thought people had been playing cards long enough before then that the concept didn’t feel out of place. The first recorded use of turned on his heels was 1751, but we reasoned that people wore heels and turned on them before then. And take a page from his book couldn’t be dated, but since books and pages had been around since the invention of the printing press in 1440 and as handwritten manuscripts before that, we didn’t think it felt too modern.

The most significant sections where we ran into challenges were, maybe not surprisingly, in our love scenes. While the editor nixed our using working girl to refer to a prostitute, we had quite a few options to choose from—strumpet (early fourteenth century), harlot (fifteenth century), courtesan (1533), temptress (1594), bawd (1700). Engaging in frottage was out—the term wasn’t in use until 1935—so we substituted erotic friction instead.

The biggest issue, though, was that the edit flagged our uses of lover, making love, and lovemaking. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, while lover meaning “one who has a predilection for” (a thing, concept, pursuit, etc.) is mid-fourteenth century, as a form of address to a lover, it dates from 1911. Lovemaking meaning “courtship” is from the mid-fifteenth century; make love from 1570s in the sense “pay amorous attention to;” as a euphemism for “have sex,” it is attested from about 1950.

We responded that we would consider period-accurate alternatives if someone could provide us with any. Unfortunately the only suggestions the editors could make were companion in place of lover or joining in place of making love. And to us, those just don’t have the same connotations. We were willing to take a stand here since we felt it would be more distracting to our readers to not use words like lover or lovemaking in a romance novel, even if they are “too modern” for the historical period.

What do you think? Are you bothered by words like lover or lovemaking in a historical romance, and if so, what terms would you use in their place? We’ll pick one comment to give away an eBook from either of our backlists.

When Ariel Tachna was twelve years old, she discovered two things: the French language and romance novels. Those two loves have defined her ever since. By the time she finished high school, she’d written four novels, none of which anyone would want to read now, featuring a young woman who was—you guessed it—bilingual. That girl was everything Ariel wanted to be at age twelve and wasn’t.

She now lives on the outskirts of Houston with her husband (who also speaks French), her kids (who understand French even when they’re too lazy to speak it back), and their two dogs (who steadfastly refuse to answer any French commands).

Love is Love Anthology Book Blast – Poems in aid of the Orlando Pulse Attack

July 15, 2016 by Denise

love_is_love_poetry_anthology_lily_g_bluntA collection of poems composed by over fifty authors in aid of the victims and survivors of the Orlando Pulse Attack.

On June 12, 2016, the most horrendous mass shooting in US history and an unfathomable act of hate was directed at the LGBT community in Orlando. The horror of this tragedy reverberated around the world, leaving millions shocked and appalled at the senseless violence that destroyed so many innocent lives.

In a display of solidarity with the victims and survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting, a group of LGBTQ+ and straight allies, from all across the globe, came together to produce a collection of poems in celebration of love and acceptance. The resulting Love is Love Poetry Anthology is dedicated to the families and victims of the shooting and all proceeds of this work will be donated to Equality Florida’s Pulse Victims Fund.

In this small way, the authors, along with the readers who purchase this work, seek to contribute to the lives of those who still suffer from the consequences of the malice directed toward them, and offer some positivity and compassion in the face of such bigotry.

Smoke & Mirrors by Charlie Cochet : Blog Tour, Playlist, Review and Giveaway

July 14, 2016 by Denise

Hello, all! Welcome to the next stop on the Smoke & Mirrors blog tour, celebrating the release of the 7th book in the THIRDS series. For those of you familiar with the series, you know what an important part music plays in both the books, and in the characters’ lives, especially in Dex’s life.

Most often than not, I listen to music while writing. Throughout the THIRDS especially, I listen to a lot to classic rock and eighties music, as well as some modern day pop. I have a paid Pandora subscription and several favorite stations set up for writing. When I come across songs that perfectly fit either the scene I’m writing, or fit great with another scene, they tend to make the playlist for that book.

A good deal of the time, it’s about the sound of the song and the mood it evokes, followed by the lyrics. Sometimes a song might inspire a scene, or something that happens in a scene. It helps me visualize what’s happening at that moment, and comes through in the description. For example, Lay All Your Love on Me by ABBA came on, and it inspired the dance sequence in Chapter 5 of Smoke & Mirrors. It also fits nicely when the brawl breaks out. I like to have a good mix of tunes from different genres and decades. Hope you enjoy it!

OMG….THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING WITH A BIG FAT CHERRY ON TOP
Hi, my name is Michelle, and I am a THIRDS NERD ADDICT! This little series has become quiet the obsession. It took a big push from a fantastic person to start the series and I am so happy I did. I am now a complete addict! Cochet is one of the best writers I have had the privilege to read. Her THIRDS world is unique but not too farfetched that you have no idea what you just read.
Cochet left me in a massive book hang over at the end of Catch a Tiger. It was a major cliffhanger and I have been chomping at the bits to see what happened. Smoke & Mirrors picks up exactly where book 6 left off.
I was nervous to start this. Wondering what would happen to Dex? Would Sloan and Dex’s relationship change? What happens if they can’t fix what happened? OMG….What if Dex never returned? I was already getting teary-eyed and getting heart palps wondering WHAT IF.
Talk about PACKING A PUNCH from the start. I will admit the beginning is not for the faint at heart! Cochet once again put some much emotion into every scene you can’t help but feel the agony and pain that Dex is going through.
Cochet delivers another no-holds-bar book with everything we expect to see……Action, Secrets (BIG SECRETS), Surprises at every turn and hot-off-the-chart scenes with our favorite couple.
If you’re already a THIRDS NERD than you already know what kind of rollercoaster ride you are in for. If you haven’t started the series…..YOU BETTER GET TO BUYING! You will need to start at book 1 but it is soooooo worth.
I will sit here patiently in the corner waiting for the next book! I will try not to ask WHEN… WHEN…WHEN because I know it will be worth the wait.

Gays of Our Lives by Kris Ripper: New Release Book Blast and Giveaway

July 13, 2016 by Denise

GaysOfOurLives_600x900synopsisEmerson Robinette only leaves his apartment to get laid and go to work. Having MS—and trying to pretend he doesn’t—makes everything more complicated, especially his fantasies of coming on strong and holding a guy down. Finding a partner who’ll explore that with him isn’t Emerson’s idea of a realistic goal.

Until a chance meeting with a hipster on a bus makes him reconsider. Obie is happy, open-hearted, and warm; what’s more, he gets his kicks being physically dominated, spanked, and teased until he’s begging. It would be perfect, except for one thing: Emerson isn’t made for happiness, and he doesn’t see how a guy like Obie would settle for a cynic like him.

But as far as Obie’s concerned, the only thing keeping them apart is Emerson. Can Emerson handle a boyfriend who’s more invested in his future than he is? Emerson’s barely convinced he has a future. But when Obie’s smiling at him, anything seems possible.

Book Title: Krane: Knights to Remember

Author: Nicole Colville

Release Date: August 1, 2016

synopsis

At the age of thirty-seven, local giant and semi-professional rugby player, Krane Buchannan, had spent his life hiding behind a tightly locked closet door with a wife as a shield and a gut full of regrets.

Coming out may not have been his decision, but ending his marriage was. With an ugly divorce starting up and a vindictive soon to be ex-wife making his life a living hell, Krane finds his once comfortable life in the small Scottish village changed forever. Unprepared and still unwilling to admit the truth, Krane has some tough decisions to make.

For years he’d been dead inside, going through life but never actually living. He thought he’d never find that one special person, but when he meets an attractive brunette with legs to die for, Krane’s world is tipped upside down.

“I’m going to ruin you for every other man. You’re mine. I own you.”

The heat and the passion scorches them both, and in the space of a few hours, Bailey becomes much more than a one-night experience. Every touch from Bailey was branded onto his skin, forever imprinted like the intricate ink work covering him, something which couldn’t be washed off or forgotten, but worn forever.

Bailey was showing Krane how life should be.

Coming from entirely different worlds, both struggle to overcome the worries and fear of entering into the other’s life, but the searing white hot heat which builds between them with every look can’t be ignored. With hesitant steps, Krane enters into the secretive world of BDSM and Bailey cautiously re-enters the world he’s tired so hard to forget. The world outside the club.

Krane screamed power. Bailey could sense it simmering across the room and filling his lungs with his alpha aroma.

There’s a sadness which clings to Bailey and his unwillingness to open up about the dark secrets from his past makes Krane doubt everything but he’s had enough of giving up and is prepared to fight for what he wants, and what he wants is Bailey. z1wwyh4MNicole grew bored being a supermodel genius who worked part time for NASA, and decided to take a break from helping solve the mysteries of the universe with Stephen Hawkins to write m/m romance.

She has a loving relationship with her hubby of twenty years, and has achieved a lot in her short life considering she’s only eighteen. She has fourteen dogs of all different breeds, plus twenty cats, and when she’s not tending to their every need, and solving complex math problems, she loves to sew and can be often found knitting in the garden, which she maintains all by herself with her magical green fingers.

Finding time to make all of her own clothing and master the kitchen better than Gordon Ramsey, she’s also a vegan domestic goddess and can often be found cooking up a storm bare foot in her kitchen.

Okay, so that’s not true, especially the cooking part, though I do tend to be bare foot and I swear like Gordon does while burning my latest creation — and I still think NASA will be getting in touch. Any day now!! *crosses fingers* I could sooo do that job because I’m so obviously awesome, but until they do…

I’m a full time author of M/M Romance and Erotica, and somehow I have several bestselling books under my belt. I’ve been writing for four years, and I self publish all my work under Hidden Pleasures Publishing along with my amazing team of helpers in the form my cover designer Kellie Dennis, editor Jessica McKenna, and all of my beta readers and PA’s.

I’m a wife to my beloved hubby and mother to two young girls, and I do in fact have two cats who I adore, but no dog, as the hubby put his foot down. I live in Leeds in the North of England and I love it, despite the terrible weather.

My men are all seeking what everyone is, true love mixed with passion and their own happy-ever-after full of laughter and tears.

Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less

✨TEASER: LICKED by @charlienwrites releasing May 12th!#PreOrderNowmybook.to/lickitoneWhy you need to #ONECLICK this book…🍦Very Nerdy Meet Cute 🍦Low Angst🍦Slow Burn🍦Lingerie🍦First Times🍦Blowjobs in Beach Huts🍦Supportive & Nosy Friends🍦Sweetness & Spice🍦“Let Me Help You” 🍦MM RomanceLick It Like A Good BoyIt’s not often you meet gorgeous gothic men at wargaming tournaments. So, of course I tripped over my tongue instead of asking for his number. And despite my friends’ numerous offers to help find him online, we’re too busy opening Lick It!, our new ice cream shop, to spare time for my non-existent love life. But when Jonathan walks through the door on a sunny Friday afternoon, I can’t help but feel like it’s fate. He’s shy, sweet, and we immediately click. Jonathan doesn’t have much experience with relationships, so I’m determined to give him the attention he deserves, even if it means I’m pulled in two directions. With summer heating up and the shop getting hectic, spending time together is getting harder and harder. I don’t know how to balance the long hours and being a good boyfriend, but I know I have to figure it out. Because meeting Jonathan is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. ✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review this awesome release: bit.ly/lickedsignup#charlienovak #mmromance #kindleunlimited The Author Agency ...
