Sharing our love of M/M Romance

The Innocent Auction by Victoria Sue: Guest Post, Release Day Review, Excerpt and Giveaway

December 30, 2015 by Denise

innocent auction

synopsisTheir love was a death sentence.

Deacon, Viscount Carlisle, was aware of the slums and gin-lanes of London. Just as he was aware of the underground traffic that furnished the brothels and bath houses with human innocents. He was also aware that the so-called justice system would hang the accused without much of an attempt at a defense, unless the unfortunate had deep pockets to pay for it.

He just hadn’t expected to be directly involved in any of it.

It started with a plea for help and ended with forbidden love, the love between a Viscount and a stable-boy. An impossible love and a guarantee of the hangman’s noose.

Will Deacon fight for Tom? Will he risk the death sentence and take that fight from the stately halls of his English mansion to the horrors of Newgate Prison and the slums of London?

Or will he realize that if he doesn’t, death will be a welcome end to the loneliness of the sentence he is already living?

Author Guest Post:

I joked with Denise that this book was so incredibly hard to write because nearly every paragraph took research. I guess we both thought it would be a good idea to prove it!

The Innocent Auction is set in London, 1810. It’s the era of Regency Romance – that some very well-known romance writers excel at – all the way back to Jane Austen and her famous Pride and Prejudice.

I wanted to be a little different.

Homosexuality in 1810 was a hanging offence. To be honest though, most offences in 1810 were hanging offences. In the main there were three types of punishment – death, deportation, or fines. Prison was not the long-term affair that it is today. Prison was merely a holding area. One of the worst types of imprisonment was the “prison hulks.” Old rotting ships in the Thames harbor. Prisoners would be held here until the next ship deporting them to the Americas or the Indies would sail. At night there were no guards. They simply locked the doors. The survival rate wasn’t high.

To give you an idea of the justice system then – there wasn’t much. Liberty was often bought. There was nothing resembling a modern police force. Prosecutions were usually done by the victim. In my book the charge of sodomy is brought by the supposed victim’s father, who has other reasons for his accusation.

Crime and punishment were high drama in 1810. Public executions were one of the most popular forms of entertainment, and were still carried out until 1868. England’s severe punishment system for major and minor crimes was known then as “The Bloody code.” Crowds to watch a hanging could be up to seven thousand people.

Most people buy calendars at Christmas. Animals, famous people, football teams even. One of the most infamous prisons at that time was Newgate. Newgate calendars were popular sellers – filled with engraved pictures of prisoners, executions, and trial scenes.

An alternative punishment was “Standing at Pillory.” The pillory was a devise made of wood or metal with holes securing the head and hands of the prisoner. The punishment was humiliation. Crowds would pelt the prisoner with everything you could think of. Rotten food was probably one of the most pleasant things. Sometimes the crowd would get too violent and the prisoner would end up maimed, or dead.

And often the ride in an open cart to the pillory was even worse than when the prisoner got there. In the 18th and 19th century, the population of England was so extremely hostile to anyone engaging in homosexual relations, the prisoners were lucky to survive the journey, and many didn’t.

To give you another example of the justice system – or lack of it – in 1810 a male brothel was raided by the Bow Street Runners, the pre-cursor of the police service. Around twenty-seven men were imprisoned, and the resulting sentence of pillory caused all the shops to close that were on the route as the crowds were so large.

The saddest footnote to this, and incomprehensible to our modern-day justice system, was that a sixteen year old boy was arrested two weeks later as a result of the publicity from the raid. He was not present when the brothel was raided, but he was still hung on hearsay and supposed confession for his involvement.

There were many other things that needed research. For example – how long would it take to drive a horse and carriage thirty miles? Did you know that tin baths were lined with soft linen as tin wasn’t pleasant to lie against? Servants hauled buckets of water to and fro, as there was no running water or indoor plumbing.

I’ll be totally honest and admit to cheating a little with the language, and not just the fact that I dialed the accents back a little. In regency England boys didn’t refer to each other by their first names. Their own mothers wouldn’t even call the eldest son and heir by their first names!

I also refer to the pox. Syphilis at that time was rife. Prostitutes were even named on lists that gentleman referred to. “Harris’s list of Covent Garden Ladies.” And “Man of Pleasure’s Kalendar.” (actual spelling)

There were no condoms, and definitely no handy tubes of lube. I had to be careful with my cursing, and learn how people spoke to each other, ate and dressed.

To end my research…the word “fuck” dates back to the fifteenth century. It used to mean “an attack or strike,” and not necessarily a pleasurable one. Funnily enough one of the first authors to use it in the fifteenth century was a man named Richard Head. I wonder if his nickname was Dick?

denise reviewI started reading Regency Romance when I was a teenager. I would get in trouble for staying up too late reading, or for taking two hours to wash the dishes because I would read my book (with rubber bands on each page) while I was doing said dishes. My grandmother had boxes of them, and I would just read them all. So, to say I love reading that period would be an understatement. I also hold it dearly to my heart, because it founded my love for reading romance novels, and the ever present HEA.

What a ride this book was! Deacon, such a man of honor, could not leave a young boy behind when he could see the suffering. Then having him sent to one of his properties, only to find him later and immediately feel a connection to him. That young boy, Tom, grew to be a man who had eyes only for Deacon, from the time he saw him. It was sweet and loving.

These two didn’t have an easy road, during a time when “buggering” was an offense punishable by hanging. But at the same time, they could not leave each other, despite thinking it was a better option for the other. Beau, meanwhile, broke my heart. What a sad story he brought on himself, and Deacon never felt anything but love and devotion for his blood brother, and would have done anything to be there for him, and truly did. I cannot imagine how challenging it must have been for gay men at that time in the world. At this point and time, it isn’t easy, but 200 years ago, it was such a heinous crime, you could be drawn through town, have rocks and garbage thrown at you, and it would be considered entertainment.

I will say, I could not figure out how these two men would be able to find their way into a life where they could be together, live together and love one another. And not only did Ms. Sue do that, she surprised me in how she got that to happen, without it seeming completely out of the blue. One hallmark of Regency Romance has always been, you must marry for money or convenience, and in the end, that came in to play, although from a different angle than I was expecting.

The research done on this book was incredible. Just as Ms. Sue indicates in her post above, every sentence needed research. I was in awe, having read so many, for so many years, of all the little things that came into play. Everything from a climbing kid, to the information on who was playing at the Theatre Royal was part of just every day conversation with these characters, and yet it lent realism to the story.

I truly enjoyed this story so much, angst and all, and would love to see Ms. Sue write another one. And the epilogue, well worth waiting for.

Deacon opened the door to his room and gaped in astonishment. A tin bath was set in the middle of the room. Steam rose from the water within and the sides were lined with fresh linen. There was a tray with all manner of breads, cheeses and meat laid out, as well as a bottle of Deacon’s brandy and a glass. Tom was just emptying another pitcher of hot water into the bath.

“Tom,” Deacon said delightedly.

“M’lord. I thought as you had no valet.”

Deacon smiled, a huge wide grin that lifted the darkness that had seemed to settle in his insides since they had come from Newgate. Then he paused. The guilt which had assailed him all day came back with vengeance, and he pictured Beau on that thin mattress.

“Don’t, sir.” Tom took a step towards him. “There is nothing you can do for Master Beau tonight, and you have done far more than most. I’m not naysaying its importance, just perhaps asking you let it go for a few hours?”

Deacon gazed at Tom steadily, then turned, took a pace back to the door, and turned the key very deliberately. He turned back and started unbuttoning his waistcoat. “On one condition.”

Tom’s eyebrows raised.

“You don’t call me sir…or m’lord…or your lordship. Not tonight.”

Tom took two steps until he was stood flush with Deacon’s body. “Let me.” Deacon’s hands fell from his buttons and he inhaled slowly, letting his head fall forward onto Tom’s chest. Tonight, Tom could do anything he wanted.

Tom slid Deacon’s jacket from his arms and tossed it onto the chair. He finished unbuttoning the waistcoat, which then joined the jacket. Tom unraveled his cravat slowly, Deacon unable to contain a moan as his fingers touched his neck.

Tom gave the low order. “Lift.”

Deacon obeyed immediately, the repeated memory tugging at both their smiles.

Once Deacon was shirtless, he thought Tom would unfasten his trousers, but he hissed in shock when Tom bent his head and fastened his lips around one of his nipples.

“Oh, God.” Deacon breathed, his eyes slamming shut as the glorious sensation of Tom’s teeth on his skin razed a fire in him that sped unchecked to his groin. Deacon sucked in air as Tom’s lips continued south, but Deacon’s hands caught him. “Get in the bath with me.”

Tom’s eyes caught the same flames that were burning in Deacon, and they both rushed to undress. Deacon stepped in the bath and sighed contentedly. The water was good and hot, and he settled with his back firmly to the edge. Tom hesitated “Come here,” Deacon instructed. “Sit in front of me.” Deacon caught Tom by the hips as he stepped in, then twisted him so he settled down in between his legs. Tom stiffened a little, but Deacon wrapped his arms around him and brought him snugly against his chest. Deacon groaned as Tom moved and settled against him, aware that Tom must have been able to feel the evidence of his arousal.

“Sir—”

Deacon grabbed Tom’s cock, and his voice cut off on a squeak.

“I’m sorry,” Tom gasped out as Deacon’s hand gentled. “I don’t know what to call you.”

“And you cannot call me Deacon?”

Tom groaned as Deacon rubbed his length firmly and circled his thumb around the tip. “I am frightened I will forget.”

Deacon licked the skin on Tom’s neck, a very sensitive patch from the way he moaned once more.

“I don’t think there’s any danger of that, but do whatever makes you feel comfortable. Sir if you like, just not m’lord for pity’s sake.”

Tom turned to lick the edge of Deacon’s jaw line. “Yes…sir.”

This time, Deacon groaned. “Every time you say that, I will be imagining you in this bath.”

“And every time I say it, I will be imagining your lips on my cock.”

Deacon’s cock throbbed at the visual, unable to respond further when Tom lifted his arm and settled his hand on Deacon’s face to pull him around for a kiss that silenced them both. His cock was rubbing hard in Tom’s crease and Deacon still had his hand in Tom’s groin, feeling the weight of Tom’s ballocks nestle in his fingers. Deacon stretched his head a little further and met Tom’s mouth. Tom made a little noise in the back of his throat at the contact, and Deacon felt himself grow even harder. He wanted nothing more than to thrust himself into that hot, tight hole. Deacon broke off a little, realizing he needed slicking up to do that. He wouldn’t hurt either of them.

Leaning Tom back, he sluiced water over his chest. He reached for the soap and the cloth, rubbing it up and over Tom’s nipples and making him quiver in delight; his nipples peaking, red, delicious. Deacon lowered the cloth onto Tom’s groin, and the lad thrust himself helplessly into Deacon’s hands. “S-sir,” he begged.

Deacon was as hard as Tom, and it nearly killed him to withdraw his hand. But not now. Tonight was going to be about lazy loving. About clean sheets and lots of time. His stomach rumbled; he was suddenly hungry. “Stand up,” he said gently, steadying Tom as he tried to rise.

“You’re bad for my balance, sir.” Deacon’s arse clenched at the word sir. Tom had been bad for his balance since the minute he had come home to Rawdenscliffe.

Tom stepped out and wiped a towel over his arms and chest, casually scrubbing his legs.

“No,” ordered Deacon, as the lad’s hand strayed to his groin. “I’ll dry that.”

Tom’s pupils distended and his face flushed. He picked up the other towel, letting his own drop heedlessly to the floor. “Sir?” He opened the towel wide for Deacon to step into as he got out of the bath. “Let me,” Tom whispered, then dried Deacon so thoroughly that every inch of his skin was thrumming in anticipation by the time he was done.

“Are you hungry?” Tom asked, going to toss the towel before Deacon took it off him.

“Not for food,” growled Deacon. He proceeded to gently dry Tom’s cock and ballocks until the lad was swaying where he stood.

Deacon raised Tom’s chin with his finger and stared into the heavy-lidded eyes. “You’re beautiful.” And he swallowed the moan as he kissed Tom’s swollen lips. He bent, swinging Tom into his arms.

Two steps barely and he was at the bed, gently laying Tom down. “Move up,” Deacon said. Tom shuffled a little so Deacon could lie beside him. “Tom, I have to ask…”

“Not with a man, sir,” Tom answered hurriedly, and Deacon nodded.

“Then we will go slow.” Deacon bent and nuzzled his neck, and he arched his head back to make more room.

“I- I’m not sure I can last for ‘slow,’ sir,” Tom stammered while Deacon sucked at his collarbone, working up a mark that would be hidden by his collar, whilst his fingers found Tom’s leaking cock fully pushed out from his foreskin.

“Then let me do this.” Deacon bent his head and quickly sucked Tom’s cock into his mouth.

“Oh, oh, my God, sir. I cannot—” Tom writhed and Deacon felt the man’s cock pulse in his mouth. His fingers strayed to the skin under it, then further until they touched Tom’s puckered hole. Deacon dragged his nail along the skin and Tom arched into Deacon’s mouth, filling it with the bitter taste of Tom’s seed. Deacon was a little stunned for a few seconds, then a pleasing sense of satisfaction when Tom’s inarticulate noises chased the bitterness away. He eagerly cleaned his cock with his tongue until Tom finally hissed, and he let go.

Tom groaned and Deacon moved higher to watch him as he lay, sated. Deacon traced Tom’s kiss-swollen lips with his finger, and his heavy lidded eyes fluttered open, a barely there smile lifted the corner of his mouth. “Sir…”

Deacon smiled. The satisfaction and pleasure imbued into three letters spoke volumes.

Deacon sat up a little, and Tom was immediately contrite. “Sir, I…you haven’t.”

“We have all night.” Deacon leaned over, pressing another kiss on Tom’s lips. He responded eagerly, and Deacon hummed in pleasure. Tom was good for his ego. He reached over for the brandy putting it between them on the bed as Tom sat up. “You only brought one glass.”

Tom blushed. Of course, thought Deacon, he would have. Tom would not have wished to assume. “It matters not, we can share.”

Tom smiled, pouring some of the brandy into a glass and passing it to Deacon. Deacon took a sip and swallowed, but made no attempt to take the glass. Tom took a sip and coughed a little. “Wow, sir.”

Deacon smirked. “There are still some Parisien jewels accepted in London.”

excerpt

That silence hid a lot from their friends, but Liam knew Chris was plagued with memories far worse than his. That’s why they decided not to celebrate alone this year. Billy and Owen were expected any minute and it was the first time they invited anyone to join them. The anniversary was bittersweet for them and they chose to celebrate it because becoming brothers meant that much to them. “Do you think they’ll find it stupid?”

Chris just shrugged as if it was no skin off his back what they thought and Liam knew that was just bravado. Fact was, they both very much cared what the two men thought. “Liar.”

His brother sighed and dropped his head back. As if shit wasn’t fucked up enough, they fell for two bastards just as fucked up as they were. “I know you’re worried about Owen. The business with Colin is growing out of their control and I’m not sure why he thinks it’s a good thing. Is he trying to prove something? And the middle of the night phone calls from the FTR? He’s looking more and more fragile every day.”Badge

Liam knew he wasn’t stating anything new. What he didn’t know was what Chris intended to do about it. Lately, when it came to Owen, Chris conveyed zero intent and seemed to be waiting for Owen to read him as effortlessly as Liam did. Their brother bond had been forged through blood and he was afraid Chris’s expectations of Owen were unreasonable. “Do you see his face every time he thinks he’s failed to understand you? The weight of it is crushing.”

Instead of regret, all Liam saw was anger in Chris. It wasn’t a common emotion for Chris and Liam could name every time he saw it. The fact that Chris knew what he was capable of if provoked had made him extremely conscious of that emotion and he often went to great lengths to contain it.

Owen was the very definition of insecure. Just the type to inspire Chris’s protective instincts, which Liam knew for a fact Owen did. Hell, he inspired Liam’s protective instincts. Owen was stubborn though and he often distanced himself, keeping things bottled up until they manifested elsewhere. Like in panic attacks that felt like heart attacks, which he also tried to hide. Liam nearly lost it when they found out that Billy was keeping Owen’s secret.

Chris nodded slowly, as if he completely followed Liam’s train of thought and waited for him to connect the dots. And just like that, Liam understood. “You’re pissed because he doesn’t come to you when the panic sets in. That he hides it from you and they hide it from us.”

It made total sense, but he had to wonder if they were expecting too much. After all, they couldn’t call what was going on with either man a relationship. No, they were four fucked up bastards trying to come together in some romanticwhat? Not a foursome, eww…he loved Chris, but yeah, that just wasn’t happening. And Owen wasn’t his type any more than Billy was Chris’s type. But—always with the fucking buts, right?—what was happening was very definitely happening to the four of them, and Liam now had to wonder if that was the problem, because trying to come together was definitely not the same as being together.

Chris shook his head and shifted in his seat. No, he was right. It wasn’t just their brother bond that made it impossible to move forward as two separate couples. Billy and Owen had formed their own unique friendship in prison and were no more likely to move forward without the other one either. “Just once, coulSIN 1dn’t we have done something the easy way?”

The fire door banged open and Liam turned to see Billy and Owen, arms full of brightly wrapped packages, struggling to pull a huge cluster of balloons through the door. It was a shocking contrast to their dark thoughts and so uncharacteristically sweet of both men. Billy caught their surprised stare and yelled, “Is this where the party’s at?”

“It is now.” It might seem silly, but it was exactly what they needed and exactly who they needed it from. Maybe they hadn’t been expecting too much at all. Liam rose to give them a hand and glanced down to see the look of longing in Chris’s eyes and thought maybe it was time they all expected more.

Interview with Jessie G

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Jessie G author of Safety in Numbers, book five in the Sizzling Miami series. Hi Jessie, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

  • What is the most satisfying thing about being a writer?960x350 (4)
Seeing the voices in my head become fleshed out “people” with pasts, hopes, dreams, things they regret and redemption for their own perceived faults. And then watching the readers fall in love with my men and their stories. Nothing makes me happier than knowing my readers are rooting for their favorite characters, or even get mad at me because they are so invested and I don’t get where they want me to go when they want me to go there. I am lucky that they stick with me in those cases, but they know I’ll always give them a happily ever after.
  • Do your characters ever take over your writing and make the story go somewhere you hadn’t originally planned?
Since I don’t do a lot of planning, the answer is definitely. I know who my characters are and a general idea of what I think the book is about, but when I put my fingers on the keyboard, it’s a crazy ride that has as many surprises for me as it does for you.
  • How did you celebrate the release of your book?
This book is being released on Halloween and I’m going to a Halloween party dressed as a writer J Easiest costume ever!
  • How did you come up with the idea for this book?SIN 3
Oh man, there are four different stories in this book. There is familial abuse, bullying, the dangerous allure of gangs, and redemption, of course. There is no one specific event or news story that I could pinpoint for those arcs, they are issues faced every day in real life that I have shined a light on and exaggerated as fits the story. Many of the books we read in this genre deal with real life issues that have been tweaked to fit the romance theme. We all use our voices differently and there are many worthy causes that need to be talked about—even if you’re talking about it because you read it in a romance novel.
  • Have you ever written naked?
Nope, no one needs to imagine that lol

Thank you so much for hosting Safety in Numbers today. Good luck to all who enter the rafflecopter and if anyone has any questions, I’ll be stopping by to answer. – Jessie

denise reviewThis one was definitely a departure from what Jessie G has written up until now. This book was all about the feels for me. There wasn’t a lot of “action”, as she normally has provided the reader in the past. That was all right with this reader. It didn’t need to be full of gunfire or explosions. This book, quite simply was about four men, two couples who’s lives were so interconnected that seeing one without the other was rare.

These men all had pasts that brought them to this one place in time in their lives, where they could finally connect with someone other than their counterpart. We had only gathered bits and pieces of these men. Knowing that Chris had kept silent for so many years, while protecting his brother Liam from the beatings he took from his step father. Meanwhile, Billy was the protector for Owen when they were in jail. They all leaned on each other, and this was their chance to learn to lean on someone else, and find the trust and love they had to give.

One of the most poignant scenes I’ve ever read was Chris standing guard over Ian in For a Reason, protecting him against the emotional threat to Red from his brother. That much steadfast devotion could only come through a true friend. That is how Chris viewed everyone who stood by him, he would stand by them until the very end, brothers to the finish.

These men all loved differently, yet found that they could all love each other despite those differences. Billy, Liam’s Billy Bear, was such a sweet soul when it came to his love for Liam, making sure that he could truly be the right one for Liam before jumping over that line.

One of the best relationships to me though, was the love of Chris and Liam. Never lovers, only brothers by marriage, and of the heart. My favorite line was “You should hate me and I honestly don’t know why you chose to love me instead, but I’m gonna hold you to it.” (Just typing that brings tears to my eyes again.) Their love for each other, through the hardest of times, was stronger than any hatred by any one man.

This series should definitely be read in order, and although to me, it may not have been the strongest book in the series, it still more than holds its own, showing a depth of love and devotion between all four men, as well as their friends on the periphery. The one challenge I had while reading this was trying to keep everyone “straight”, for lack of a better word. Knowing who was who, and who was falling in love with who was a mind challenge, and I commend Jessie G for being able to keep them all in line. I throughly enjoyed learning the dynamics of these two relationships, and how they could make it work on a day to day basis, feeling their way through how to be two couples in love, instead of two couples of steadfast friends and brothers. In the end, they were able to make it work on all levels, keeping their brotherly love, as well as falling in love with their other half. A very well done book in this series.

4 pieces of eye candy from me.

4-pieces-of-eye-candy2morgan reviewI was so excited to get my hands on this book. These guys have been so intriguing to me from the very first moment. Each of these men have gone through so many struggles and difficulties in their lives. With Safety in Numbers we finally learn what happened in the past to make the ‘freaky foursome’ the men they are today.

We get to meet some new characters with this one and there is a new addition to Bull’s garage as well. We also get to revisit a few of our favorite guys. This story is packed with different emotions so be ready. You have lots of tears and laughter ahead especially with the precious little Ava and Luc.

I loved this story!! This is another wonderful read from Jessie and I can’t wait for her next installment.

meet the author

Like many readers, the dream of being a writer has been with me a long time. After three decades of trying, I’d begun to doubt. Thanks to social media, I followed my favorite authors hoping to glean some words of wisdom as I pounded out half-formed ideas with alarming regularity. Two repetitive themes emerged: to be a great writer you must read a lot and your butt must be in the chair every day like it’s a job. The more you write, the easier it will be to write and the better you will be at writing. I took that advice to heart and write every day. With six published books to date, three series in the works and a full schedule of releases planned for the next two years, it’s been amazing to have made this dream my reality.

I am a firm believer in marriage equality, love at first sight, power dynamics and happily ever after. I’m a lover of strong secondary characters and series filled with families, biological or chosen. All are themes you’ll find throughout my books.

FRET by Sandrine Gasq-Dion : Blog Tour, Excerpt, Review and Giveaway

September 9, 2015 by Denise

Title: Fret
Series: The Rock Series #1
Author: Sandrine Gasq-Dion
Genre: M/M Romance
Published: August 31, 2015
Approx 170 Pages
 synopsis
WARNING: This book contains homosexual relations and crude language. A sneak peek at book 2 follows the ending!

Former Navy SEAL Axel Blaze lives a solitary life. He doesn’t do emotions, and he doesn’t do babysitting. Used to being on his own, his job consists of Wetwork (a charming term coined by the KGB) for his former Master Chief, Mac. When an out-of-the-ordinary job lands on his doorstep, Axel heads down a path that includes a famous heavy metal rock band and one quiet, vulnerable, guitar-shredding virtuoso named Gareth Wolf.

Gareth Wolf’s life changed in an instant when a car he was a passenger in crashed, hurting his brother’s best friend and the band’s lead guitarist. They created the band, Skull Blasters, as kids. Gareth had always been happy in the background, playing roadie. With the lead guitarist’s injury, Gareth is suddenly thrust into the limelight and into a frenzied life he never imagined for himself. Finally fed up with living a lie, Gareth comes out as gay in a newspaper interview and finds himself in the bulls-eye of a crazed stalker. Somebody wants Gareth hurt – or worse – and Mac has been hired to be sure that doesn’t happen. Babysitting duty is NOT Axel’s strong suit, but Mac won’t be budged.

Enter Axel Blaze.

Against his better judgment, the big man takes the job to protect the shy musician. The more time he spends with Gareth Wolf, the more he admires the man. Where’s a simple assassination when you need one? The situation becomes more volatile for each man as the attempts on Gareth escalate just as Axel finds himself falling for the quiet lead guitarist.

Strong, funny, smart-ass — and kinda sweet Axel is everything Gareth has ever wanted in a man. Too bad he’s off limits. As the stalker grows bolder, Gareth and Axel move closer emotionally – but is it too late? All Axel knows is that they don’t stand a chance if he can’t find the maniac trying to kill the man he’s come to care about. A lot.
Everyone knows that relationships that begin in pressured or volatile situations eventually fizzle out.
Or do they?

I have always loved Sandrine’s books so I was really excited about this new series. The story held my attention and I didn’t want it to end but I did feel like it was a bit rushed towards the last few chapters. That being said, I think this is a really great start to her new series.  It’s interesting to see how the relationship between Axel and Gareth develops since they have such different personalities and are the complete opposite of one another. Gareth is a loving person, sweet and somewhat shy when he isn’t on stage. Axel is exactly what I would expect for a former SEAL.  Rough, rugged, and someone who has seen more in life than anyone should ever have too. He’s a really good person down deep and a good match for Gareth.

We get to visit with some of the characters from Ann Lister’s Rock Gods series here as well. That’s pretty awesome. I love how Ann and Sandy have shared and meshed a little of their worlds with each other. It’s fun to see who will pop up where.
We got to see a little sneak peek of the next book in the series and I can’t wait for the next release. The rest of the band members were pretty badass and it’s going to be a ride getting to know each one.
4.5 pieces of eye candy from me. 🙂

excerpt
Thumping music was shaking the walls of the Dome as I headed for my designated spot. I guess I’m meeting Paul, the band’s manager.
I took mental notes as I passed through the crowd of screaming, jumping people. The band was rocking it out and I sought out Gareth Wolf. There were two guitarists, but I found him right away. Black hair touched his shoulders and his lean body moved with his guitar.
He was in his element.
The song was wrapping up and the floor was shaking from the bass drum. The floor-to-ceiling speakers pumped out the last notes of the song. The crowd immediately went wild as Ransom Fox leaned over the stage.
“Let’s hear it for the best lead guitarist on the planet!” he shouted.
Gareth shook his hair back and bowed with one hand out. Again, the crowd screamed, shouted and whistled. Ransom went on to give some love to the other members of the group.
I rolled my eyes and pushed my way through the crowd toward the side of the stage. A large man eyed me and then nodded as I walked by. Again, I could have been wearing a ‘Hello, I’m God’ tag and security wouldn’t have batted an eyelash. As it was, my tag faced backwards; he couldn’t even see my name or credentials.
Security for the Skull Blaster band was sorely lacking.
I sat through another hour of bone-jarring hardcore metal before the band finally left the stage. I scanned the area for their manager, but no luck.
I walked right behind the curtain and fell into step with the band members as they trudged toward their dressing rooms. They didn’t even notice me — and I’m really hard to miss.
They stepped into the dressing room; I followed and slammed the door shut behind me. Ransom turned and his eyes widened.
“Who the fuck are you?!”
“Nice of you to finally notice me,” I pointed out.
“Paul!” Ransom thundered. He immediately moved in front of Gareth, shielding him.
“Oh for fucks sake.” I rolled my eyes.
The door behind me opened and a startled man looked me over from head to toe. He flipped my name badge over and sighed audibly, clearly relieved.
“It’s cool, Ransom. This is the guy I was telling you about.”
“You could have mentioned he was a semi-truck.” Ransom’s eyes narrowed.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t meet you,” Paul apologized to me. “I ran into some media and couldn’t get away.”
“Not that this isn’t fun — because, oh so much fun — but I’m here to do a job. So I need to speak to whoever is in charge of ‘security.’ Now.” I leaned very slightly — but effectively — in to Paul’s face.
“Why?”
I turned to see Gareth peeking out from behind his brother’s broad shoulders. His eyes were a shade of green I’d never seen before, and with his pale complexion and dark hair? The guy was a looker and then some.
“Because band security royally sucks. I walked right on back here with them and not one person noticed or stopped me. That is not acceptable.”
“Who are you?” Gareth gaped.
I pinned him with a hard look. “I’m your bodyguard.”
Ransom chuckled.
“What the actual fuck?” Gareth stepped in front of his brother. “Is this a joke?”
“Nope.” Ransom shook his head.
“Jinx, Harley, Rebel. Give us a few, eh?” Paul opened the door and tilted his head toward the hallway.
“Sure thing, boss.” Rebel tipped his hat and winked at me.
I leaned against the wall as the members walked out. I overheard one of them, not sure which, talking to another.
“Did you see the size of that guy?”
“How could you miss him?” another one answered.
Paul shut the door and turned to Gareth with an apologetic smile.
“I knew what you’d say if we told you beforehand,” he admitted.
“Oh, did you now? You had to get me Conan the Destroyer? Jesus Christ!”
“Gareth,” Ransom warned.
“What? This is stupid! I don’t need a human shield!”
“You’re going to play nice and allow this man to watch your back, Gareth!” Ransom shouted. “You’re getting threats since you came out! I insist you be kept safe!”
“Gareth, why don’t you go clean up? Then you and Mr. Blaze can get acquainted.”
“Seriously? Blaze?” Gareth snorted.
I narrowed my eyes at the kid. Well, to me he was a kid, after everything I’d seen in my life. Gareth was almost twenty-three and I was pushing thirty. We locked eyes for a few seconds before he turned away.

BuchananHouse_Final-1synopsis

Eric Allen, thirty-three-year-old line cook, moved in with his grandmother, Jewell, after a disastrous coming-out when he was in middle school. She raised him, and he cared for her when she fell ill. When Jewell died she left everything to Eric—angering his parents and older brother. The inheritance isn’t much, but Eric and his bestie Nathan pool their money and buy an abandoned hotel on an isolated stretch of the Central Oregon Coast. The hotel isn’t far from Lincoln City—a town with its own Pride Festival and named for a president—so they christen it Buchanan House after James Buchanan, the “confirmed bachelor” president with the close male friend.

Eric and Nathan need a handyman to help them turn Buchanan House into the gay resort of their dreams. Eric finds Tim Tate in the local listings and over the months leading to opening weekend Tim reveals himself as a skilled carpenter with many hidden talents. Eric falls hard for Tim, but before he can see a future with the gorgeous handyman he has to get over twenty years of being bullied and shamed by his birth family. It would be much easier if Eric’s brother Zach weren’t trying to grab part of the inheritance or ruin opening weekend.

Timothy Tate knocked on the front doors at eight o’clock sharp. Eric had barely been up long enough to start coffee, and Nathan had yet to emerge. They’d slept in one of the rooms on the first floor. The official reason was to avoid having to clean two rooms, but the unofficial reason was to talk into the night like they had back in middle school. Slumber parties for thirtysomethings. Somehow that didn’t make Eric feel any better about meeting this Tim person.

But opening the door sure did.

Tim Tate was as tall as Nathan, so six one, and he had curly black hair and eyes so dark you could get lost in them.

“Morning.” He wasn’t much for smiling, though.Banner300x250 (2)

“Good morning. Please come in. I’m Eric.”

Tim nodded and seemed to be looking at something behind Eric’s right shoulder. As soon as Eric remembered to step aside, Tim came in. “You bought this place?”

“Yes. Isn’t it lovely? The inspector said the bones are solid, and someone did amazing work on the rooms. Right now, we need help with the kitchen and some reno on the public areas.”

“Should tear it down and start fresh.”

“I beg your pardon. That’s a horrible thing to say. You don’t discard something just because it’s not perfect. With a little love—maybe this isn’t going to work out.”

Tim shrugged and looked around the room. His face seemed to soften into… nostalgia? It held a wistful quality, of that much Eric was certain.

“Have you been in this room before?”

Tim had turned away a little, so the left side of his face pointed toward Eric.

Is that his best side?

He didn’t answer, so Eric repeated the question, a little louder.

“Huh? Oh, yeah. When I was a kid. Sometimes the local clubs would use it for summer camps. It’s been empty for over ten years.”

“Why? I mean, did something happen here?”

“No. The owners died, and their kids didn’t want to live out here. Can’t blame ’em. Entertainment isn’t easy to come by.”

Nathan chose that moment to enter, in his pink robe with the ostrich-feather trim. He spoke quickly, almost dancing through the room and toward the aroma of coffee. “Good morning. You don’t mind I borrowed your robe? And this must be Tim. Lovely to meet you, sweetheart. Coffee, then business.” He flounced into the kitchen.

Eric and Tim watched him go. The silence in his wake stretched out a little too long for Eric, mortified by the thought Tim might believe the robe belonged to him.

Curve Ball Excerpt © Sloan Johnson 2015

“If you have something to say to me, just say it.” I tapped my fingers on the steering wheel to keep from shaking Drew. He was one of the youngest guys on the team, and right now, his immaturity showed through brightly. It was about time someone knocked some sense into him, before he wound up earning a bad reputation, both on the field and off. “I won’t apologize, because I haven’t done a damn thing to offend you.”

“Really? I shouldn’t be pissed off that I had no clue you were gay?” Drew seethed, his brown eyes narrow slits as he glared at me. “And I should be totally cool with you loading up my friend in the middle of the night to take him back to your place, right?”

“Yeah, actually you should,” I quipped, twisting the wheel tighter. “Cam is a grown man, and if you truly care about him, you should be fucking ecstatic that he’s getting out there to meet people.”

Drew muttered something to himself as he went back to staring out the window. His shoulders slumped forward and he seemed to shrink in his seat. I knew that look. It wasn’t one worn by a concerned or pissed off friend, it was the look of a man who felt the love of his life slipping away from him.

“How long have you felt this way about him?” I asked. My chest tightened, knowing that I wouldn’t stand between them. Drew and I might not be close, but I liked to think of him as a friend, a brother on the team.

“Doesn’t matter.” The response was so quiet I could barely hear the words. As I pulled up to the stoplight, I placed my hand on Drew’s shoulder, unsurprised when he jerked away.

“It does,” I assured him. “And you have to know I wouldn’t have done anything with him if I’d known.”

“Don’t say that. I’ve known for a long time that he’d never feel for me what I do for him.” I suddenly missed the anger Drew showed earlier. “If the way he looked this morning is any indication, you’re exactly what he needs in his life. And if I put my own feelings aside, you’re more than that. You’re what he’s always wanted.”

That was not how I expected this conversation to go. It started exactly as I’d seen it in my mind, but I hadn’t expected Drew to step aside. Maybe I was wrong in thinking that he was immature and selfish.

“Drew, if you say the word, I’ll back off. I’m not willing to destroy two friendships just for a few nights of fun.”

“The only way I’d ask you to do that is if that’s all this is for you.” I pulled up in front of the grocery store, but neither of us moved to open our doors. “Cam is one of the best guys I know. He’s got a big heart, but sometimes, he’s a little too open with it. If you’re only in this for a couple of hot nights, then yeah you should walk away from him.”

I felt backed into a corner. Sure, I’d thought about what it’d be like to explore something more with Cam, but I wasn’t in a place to do that. It had nothing to do with being on the road most of the year and everything to do with my own inability to be open with those around me. I’d grown accustomed to never letting anyone get too close, and Cam had already seen more than people I’d known for years. There was no way I’d be able to hold back if last night and tonight turned into something more.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” It was the most I could promise him.

excerpt
TEN MINUTES. He was going to be here in ten minutes. Maybe. The website had given Elliot a window of an hour, but with ten minutes to, he was beginning to feel anxious. His heart was racing. His palms were already sweating. No one other than his sister and Dr. Mazur had crossed the threshold of his front door since it happened.

Nothing like throwing himself into the fire.

Elliot paced around the house, tidying what had already been tidied. He didn’t want this guy thinking he was a hoarder on top of being a shut-in. He double-checked that there was no clutter on his coffee table, that the newspapers his sister brought were neatly stacked and ready for the fireplace. The side tables had been dusted—twice—and the blanket on the back of the couch straightened. Pulling down the blinds on his front windows, he peered out, looking for a strange vehicle, but the street was deserted.Banner300x250 (1)

He walked back into the kitchen. Spotless. He wasn’t really sure how the whole delivery thing worked, if the guy just left his things at the door or if he brought them all the way into the house. Glancing at the clock again, he saw he had just enough time to fix—

There was a loud knock at the door. This was it. He hoped he wouldn’t puke on this guy’s shoes as soon as the door opened. He felt like he might. As calmly as he could, he walked to the front door and unlocked it.

Deep breaths, just keep breathing, he reminded himself before he clutched at the doorknob, turned it, and pulled his front door open.

He almost forgot to keep breathing.

The man that stood on the other side of his door, backlit by the sun, looked up and gave a crooked smile that made Elliot’s already rapidly beating heart hustle.

“Hi, are you Elliot Lawrence?” the man asked, his southern drawl warm and comforting somehow.

“Yes,” Elliot said unintelligently… and then forgot how to speak.

“I’m Colt.”

My review:Shadows Never Leave (Shadows duet book 2) by Lark TaylorThis is book 2 of a duet and you must read book 1 first...a.co/d/06h9mALvThis one was a bit tough for me. Mostly because I enjoyed book 1 so much I was expecting more from book 2.A note that cheating doesn't really bother me in books. But I felt that having Ryan engaged when Dominic returns was a bit too much...After 10 years Dom (and Max) are back. Dom wants to win Ryan back. Max wants his twin back in his life. But Ryan isn't that 18 year old kid anymore. And he isn't taking anyone's crap either.Dom is totally annoying at first. Ryan jokingly calls him a stalker, but there were stalker vibes there. Which fit with his personality but still.Too much of the book is them just rehashing what happened when Dom left and the fact that they have had zero communication in that time. Over and over and over again. It got to the point where I was ready to throw my kindle if Ryan said "BUT YOU LEFT!" one more time. And it is sooooooo obvious that he and his fiance Katie don't belong together. They liked each other. Probably loved each other. And they were the type of couple to make it work and make it look perfect on the outside. But they would have ended up miserable. So yes, we get the HEA. But we had to trudge through some mud to get there.3 pieces of eye candy ... See MoreSee Less

New release and my review for:Seven Minutes by Raquel Riley At times this was a difficult read for me (stress for ME). But that didn't make it a bad book. Quite the contrary. Any book that stirs feelings in you is a book that hits home.We aren't yet privy to the relationship between Adrian and Eli when a horrific car accident brings Eli to Adrian's emergency room. (maybe a nitpick here but how did none of the staff know it was his husband??) The title refers to the 7 minutes after you die when your brain is still functioning. Which is really kind of scary to me. But it is through those 7 minutes of recollection by Eli that we get most of the back story.Being that this is a romance, I don't think it is much of a spoiler that Eli survives. But what comes next is picking up the pieces of their lives, and more importantly, their marriage. There are fights and apologies and explanations.... Eli is still ready to give up despite his love for Adrian. Adrian is not giving up because of his love of Eli.You don't appreciate what you have until you lose it. Or almost lose it.4 Pieces of Eye CandyOne click here 👉 a.co/d/0e1X1vOC ... See MoreSee Less
