Curve Ball by Sloan Johnson: Blog Tour

August 5, 2015 by Denise

Title: Curve Ball

Series: Homeruns #2

Author: Sloan Johnson

Genre: MM Sports Romance

Published: July 29, 2015

Jason Klein’s living with the fallout from a decision he knew was the right one at the time. He never told anyone about the love of his life, which left him to mourn alone when he found out the man he gave his heart to had been killed in combat. Now, his heart has had time to heal, but he’s not sure he’s ready to let himself move on. Until he meets Cam Morgan…Without a job lined up following graduation, Cam Morgan took his best friend up on his offer to move to Milwaukee and stay with him until he could get on his feet. The last thing he wanted to do the day after getting to town was go to a party filled with a bunch of jocks. Sure, they were “professional athletes” but Cam was convinced that bigger bank accounts didn’t make them any more accepting of people like him. He certainly didn’t expect to meet Jason, the Mavericks’ catcher who broke every stereotype he’d had. What started out as one hot, sweaty night together quickly grows into something deeper. Jason welcomes Cam into his home and his life, but now he has to teach the younger man that it’s not a sign of weakness to let people help you.

Curve Ball Excerpt © Sloan Johnson 2015

“If you have something to say to me, just say it.” I tapped my fingers on the steering wheel to keep from shaking Drew. He was one of the youngest guys on the team, and right now, his immaturity showed through brightly. It was about time someone knocked some sense into him, before he wound up earning a bad reputation, both on the field and off. “I won’t apologize, because I haven’t done a damn thing to offend you.”

“Really? I shouldn’t be pissed off that I had no clue you were gay?” Drew seethed, his brown eyes narrow slits as he glared at me. “And I should be totally cool with you loading up my friend in the middle of the night to take him back to your place, right?”

“Yeah, actually you should,” I quipped, twisting the wheel tighter. “Cam is a grown man, and if you truly care about him, you should be fucking ecstatic that he’s getting out there to meet people.”

Drew muttered something to himself as he went back to staring out the window. His shoulders slumped forward and he seemed to shrink in his seat. I knew that look. It wasn’t one worn by a concerned or pissed off friend, it was the look of a man who felt the love of his life slipping away from him.

“How long have you felt this way about him?” I asked. My chest tightened, knowing that I wouldn’t stand between them. Drew and I might not be close, but I liked to think of him as a friend, a brother on the team.

“Doesn’t matter.” The response was so quiet I could barely hear the words. As I pulled up to the stoplight, I placed my hand on Drew’s shoulder, unsurprised when he jerked away.

“It does,” I assured him. “And you have to know I wouldn’t have done anything with him if I’d known.”

“Don’t say that. I’ve known for a long time that he’d never feel for me what I do for him.” I suddenly missed the anger Drew showed earlier. “If the way he looked this morning is any indication, you’re exactly what he needs in his life. And if I put my own feelings aside, you’re more than that. You’re what he’s always wanted.”

That was not how I expected this conversation to go. It started exactly as I’d seen it in my mind, but I hadn’t expected Drew to step aside. Maybe I was wrong in thinking that he was immature and selfish.

“Drew, if you say the word, I’ll back off. I’m not willing to destroy two friendships just for a few nights of fun.”

“The only way I’d ask you to do that is if that’s all this is for you.” I pulled up in front of the grocery store, but neither of us moved to open our doors. “Cam is one of the best guys I know. He’s got a big heart, but sometimes, he’s a little too open with it. If you’re only in this for a couple of hot nights, then yeah you should walk away from him.”

I felt backed into a corner. Sure, I’d thought about what it’d be like to explore something more with Cam, but I wasn’t in a place to do that. It had nothing to do with being on the road most of the year and everything to do with my own inability to be open with those around me. I’d grown accustomed to never letting anyone get too close, and Cam had already seen more than people I’d known for years. There was no way I’d be able to hold back if last night and tonight turned into something more.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” It was the most I could promise him.

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s life. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass. When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book? Now, Sloan is a tattooed mom with a mohawk and two kids. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself with a good book and forget she has somewhere to be.

excerpt

The bass singer was gay. Cody wiggled his hips in an exaggerated move that always got him company on dance floors, waited a beat, and … there. Right on cue, the curly-haired singer gave him another sidelong glance.

A straight dude might grant Cody the occasional double take because, yeah, it was damn hard to ignore Cody’s style of fabulousness. Today, for example, the style gods had smiled on him—his hair was the perfect combination of deliberate spikes and casual falls, the silver specks in his eyeliner complemented his stBanner300x250 (2)udded leather belt, and his red skinny jeans showed off his ass. So when the bass’s double take had turned into something more like a quintuple take, Cody knew what those lingering glances meant. Knew it despite the fact that the bass looked fresh off the farm, all wholesome and rosy-cheeked and wearing a tie/sweater vest combo perfect for performing in a church choir.

Crash. The bass missed a step, sending a speaker skidding across the stage. One of the camera guys groaned. On second thought, maybe the bass hadn’t been checking out Cody. Maybe he had trouble controlling his big blue eyes the same way he had trouble controlling his big-assed feet.

Whatever the dude was, he was screwing up Cody’s big break. Twitchy farmer boy and the rest of his all-boy group had screwed up multiple run-throughs of the opening number for the new season of Perfect Harmony. No one would notice Cody’s singing if the other groups kept crashing into one another and losing the chorus. He’d worked damn hard to earn this solo, and he didn’t need farmer boy messing it up with his clodhopper feet that kept tripping over thin air.

Prickly Business by Piper Vaughn & Kenzie Cade: Book Review

August 3, 2015 by Denise

11846308_872727952813579_1095273045_nsynopsisSome people might call Avery Babineaux a prick. He’s a hedgehog shifter from an old-money Louisiana family, with a penchant for expensive shoes and a reputation for being a judgmental snob. His attitude is why he and his fated mate are estranged. Not that Avery cares. He doesn’t want to be mated to some blue-collar werewolf anyway. Or so he keeps telling himself.

No werewolf likes to be looked down upon, least of all Dylan Green. He doesn’t need a mate, especially not some snotty hedgehog who sneers at his custom motorcycle shop and calls him a grease monkey. But when Avery gets into trouble with a shady loan shark, Dylan can’t stand by and let him be hurt—whether he wants the brat or not.

Yet once Dylan steps into Avery’s world, he realizes there’s more to Avery than his prickly exterior, and that unexpected vulnerability calls to Dylan’s protective instincts. The sassy little hedgehog needs a keeper, and despite their horrible first impressions, Dylan starts to believe he might be the wolf for the job.

A hedgehog shifter? I was pretty intrigued when I heard about this. How are you going to make that work? They are so little and definitely not your typical idea for a shifter story. Piper Vaughn and Kenzi Cade pulled it off nicely. The story kept my attention and the plot is very believable. There is humor, angst, romance and mystery all rolled into one and I really enjoyed the story.

Both of the MC’s have very different personalities. It wasn’t love at first site for these two. They both had a bad first impression that caused them to have to work harder for their HEA.  The love scenes were very well done and smoking hot. I was not disappointed in the least.

This was a pretty fun and creative read and I’m excited to learn there will be a second book coming out as well. I’m definitely looking forward to that.

I’m giving this 4.5 pieces of eye candy. 1-4.5 pieces of eye candy

Piper Vaughn wrote her first love story at eleven and never looked back. Since then, she’s known that writing in some form was exactly what she wanted to do. A reader at the core, Piper loves nothing more than getting lost in a great book—fantasy, young adult, romance, she loves them all (and has a two thousand book library to prove it!). She grew up in Chicago, in an ethnically diverse neighborhood, and loves to put faces and characters of every ethnicity in her stories, so her fictional worlds are as colorful as the real one. Above all, she believes that everyone needs a little true love in their life…even if it’s only in a book.

Kenzie Cade was born and raised in the South where she spends her days in the sometimes stressful field of private medicine observing interesting people and committing them to memory for later use. When she isn’t reading, experimenting with recipes, or being distracted by social media, Kenzie spends time with her family, friends, and the Pomeranian/Long-haired Chihuahua mix who likes to keep her company while she writes. As a young girl, Kenzie dreamed of princesses and their white knights. As an adult (or sort of adult), she dreams of princes and their proverbial white knights, which she attributes the fellow Arkansan S.E. Hinton and her novel The Outsiders. Writing to keep the fictional voices at bay, Kenzie enjoys the journeys her characters travel to find their happy endings, and she loves the challenge of writing a great love story.

denise review

When I was given this book to review before release date, I freaked out a little. I mean I would have read it either way, but as we all know I gush a lot when Charlie Cochet is even in the room, much less when I get to read her books. So, I received the book, and then didn’t read it for a day or two…needed a few moments to calm down. 🙂

And then…well, I wasn’t sure what was happening! I started the book and, I’ll be honest, there was a moment where I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. I say that without taking a thing away from Charlie as a writer. I wasn’t sure merely because it was different, different than the previous four books, and I didn’t know if that would work from me. Then I read from a pure reader standpoint and realized I should never have doubted Charlie in the least. She did exactly what was right for these characters at this time.

Ash and Cael’s book should not have been like Dex and Sloane’s books. They are different characters, with different backgrounds, and different ways of thinking. So, having their book be similar to Dex and Sloane’s would have been a disservice to Ash and Cael, who the readers have been wanting to get together since book 1.

Charlie did an amazing job drawing me into Ash and Cael’s story. Yes, it is one book for their love story, but we know we will see much more of their relationship as we continue to move through the series. There was still action to be had in this story, the cover tells a tail (he he) that the reader might expect to be one way, but is quite another.

At the heart of it all is a love story. Cael patiently waiting for Ash to come around and realize that he has loved him all along, and to stop fighting the inevitable. Interestingly, even with Cael patiently waiting, there is a scene in there, that had me laughing out loud, as Cael explains how he was “prepping” for Ash. Imagining the shock on Ash’s face was enough to make me , and going back to re-read the entire scene again.

My sincere apologies to Charlie for doubting her for even a second, and I promise to never do it again. 😉 (And if you can question my love for this book, know that I preordered it, even though I received an arc for an honest review). Cannot wait to see what Charlie has ahead for Calvin and Ethan.

I have to throw a few of my favorite quotes in:

“My Cheesy Doodles!” Dex dropped to his hands and knees. “Noooooo! They were so young. So delicious.”

“You sure you don’t want to maybe date a cactus? Less prickly.”

“This is payback for every time he called me Simba, for that fucking puppet, for every smartass remark.”

Another brilliant book, Charlie. Thank you for continuing to share the THIRDS men with all of us. This could be nothing but a five pieces of eye candy review for me.

morgan review

With this newest installment to the THIRDS from the adorable Charlie Cochet, It’s time for Ash and Cael to have their story told. This book has a different feel to me than the others. It focuses more on the romance and we get to understand Ash and Cale on a different level. These two have loved each other for a very long time. Ash has had a lot of emotional struggle and things he has had to work through before he could give himself fully to the relationship. I learned about issues in Cael’s past that made me understand  him more. I never realized he struggled as much as he has. This story made me see each character in a completely new light and they have become my favorite. To be honest, I wasn’t too fond of Ash to begin with. He now holds a special little place with me.

Dex is still here with his humor and antics and Charlie keeps us laughing. Destructive Delta faces new struggles and I began to worry for their safety towards the end. My nerves were on edge but things always seem work out in a pretty cool way for these guys.
Charlie is gonna kick ass with the next installment and I can not WAIT. I was not disappointed with Against The Grain and this gets 5 Pieces of eye candy from me for sure.

denise review
So, shifters…not normally my thing at all. But when I was asked to review this Audible version of CC’s Johnnie, I thought, why not? It’s CC, and I always love her stuff, so I can try to step outside my box and see whether I can do shifters or not. I have to say, I was more than pleasantly surprised. So much so, that I would really like to see what else this series has in store for us. Although shifters may not be my go to type of book, with CC, I knew that I had a good chance of enjoying it.
What always impresses me with books like this is the imagination it takes to come up with these ideas that in our reality don’t exist. In the case of Johnnie, Hugh is a Premier lion shifter, and his Siphon (who we later come to know as Johnnie) is always near by, holding the extra power that Hugh is not using. I would have never thought of something like that! It made absolute sense, and it gave us a glimpse into why Johnnie felt as he did, watching Hugh for all those years, never speaking, and never being spoken to. Such a lonely life.
I found myself really wanting Johnnie to find his happiness, to see whether he would be able to be seen or not, not just by Hugh, but by the rest of the pride. Hugh meanwhile struggled with being able to care for his pride, and thinking that was all he would have in life, until he SAW Johnnie.
CC always writes a hot story, and this is no exception, as you will see in the opening scene where Hugh is spreading himself around. But hotness wasn’t the only thing I enjoyed. I loved seeing Johnnie gain confidence, and being willing to say how he felt, and speak his mind. He became not just the Siphon for Hugh, but also his confidante, his friend, and his true mate. Their bond was organic, beginning with mistrust, and very little communication, but continuing to expand on that as their confidence in each other’s strengths grew. Finding love was inevitable.
Greg Tremblay, the narrator, did a great job on this book. He gave the characters’ voices life, and used his range very well to give everyone distinct sounds. It did not feel like he was reading it to me, as I can sometimes feel with audiobooks. It truly felt like I was reading the book myself, which to me is the ultimate compliment to the narrator. Hats off to you, Greg!
I hope you will take a chance on this audiobook, or even the ebook version. What a fantastic story, from one of my favorite authors! Definitely want to see what Book 2 has in store. 4.5 pieces of eye candy.

Random facts about Greg Tremblay

10 bits of random trivia, with Greg.

1) I actually studied acting in college, along with opera; but got a degree in

Computer Science.

2) My recording booth itself is only 3’ x 5’ x 6’ . . . so when I read MM romance, I

go INTO the closet. Ironic, no?

3) It takes between 5 and 7 hours of total production time with the finished

manuscript to create 1 hour of final audio. Fiction Audio reads at about 9800

words per hour.

4) In addition to voice acting, I have been a Whale Watching guide, a Paramedic,

and a Farrier (shoeing horses)

5) I rarely, if ever, listen to a complete book again once the production is

finished. By the time I am done, I’ve read the book to myself, read it aloud,

and listened to it for editing… and I’m on to the next story.

6) Anguish is the easiest emotion for me to portray, because a well-written

script pulls you in, and it’s a completely one-person emotion – but it’s

draining. I have cried in the booth more than a few times. Comic passages

are the trickiest, because the proper timing and reaction between characters

are essential.

7) I drink an average of 1.5 liters of water per hour, while recording. Average

recording sessions are 2-4 hours long between breaks.

8) As a kid, I lived with my family on a sailboat for a year.

9) My personal record for most distinct voices in a single book is 73

10) Coffee, Dairy and Alcohol are all bad for the voice. . . which means I have to

moderate some of life’s greatest pleasures. (not eliminate tho, I’m not crazy)

Cardeno C. – CC to friends – is a hopeless romantic who wants to add a lot of happiness and a few “awwws” into a reader’s day. Writing is a nice break from real life as a corporate type and volunteer work with gay rights organizations. Cardeno’s stories range from sweet to intense, contemporary to paranormal, long to short, but they always include strong relationships and walks into the happily-ever-after sunset.
Cardeno’s Home, Family, and Mates series have received awards from Love Romances and More Golden Roses, Rainbow Awards, the Goodreads M/M Romance Group, and various reviewers. But even more special to CC are heartfelt reactions from readers, like, “You bring joy and love and make it part of the every day.”

synopsis
You are cordially invited to the wedding of Jon Connor and Ian Jones!

When I think about my guys and who I think marriage would mean the most to, I always think about Red. Growing up in foster care and spending his first twenty-five years just trying to survive, the concept of family is a dream he never thought would become a reality. He found a family with Bull, the Connors and our favorite guys in the garage, but marriage would really make him a Connor. Not just the piece of paper, but the vows in front of all their loved ones, the promise of forever…it’s everything Red deserves.

In this sequel novella to For A Reason, we follow Bull and Red through the wonderful and crazy adventure of planning a wedding. From setting a date to saying those two magical words to their surprise Irish honeymoon, we get to see how love has transformed everyone’s favorite couple. And stick around for the outtakes, Red and Bull’s marriage has had quite the impact on all the guys!

Authors Note: 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the Trevor Project, the leading national organization focused on crisis and suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.

Series Note: This book is not a standalone. For A Reason is a must read so you have Bull and Red’s full back story. That said, the sequence of events in this book picks up about five months after Tricking Chase (Devils Pride MC, Book #1) and I do suggest reading them in order. After this book, the two series will move forward separately.

excerpt
For a second, Bull forgot what he’d been trying to do. All he could think about was what he was going to do when they got back from the courthouse. “I’m anticipating a lot of things. Getting our marriage license today…”

“There’s a three day waiting period, remember?” Red teased.wedding invitation

“Marrying you in two weeks,” Bull continued, refusing to be derailed. “Having all our friends with us when we share our vows, our first kiss as husbands, our first dance as husbands…”

“I can’t dance.” The teasing smile slipped away and Red ducked his head. “I never have and there’s not enough time for me to learn and if my body doesn’t cooperate then I’ll look stupid. I’ll make you look stupid.”

“It’s cooperating just fine now, though, isn’t it?” Bull nudged his head up and pressed a kiss to his wrinkled brow. “Cause we’re dancing, Ian, right here in the bathroom.”

Red’s eyes widened in surprise. “We’re dancing?”

“Well, our bodies are swaying, our feet are moving…yeah, that’s dancing.” Watching the realization sink in and seeing Red’s smile bloom again was everything.

Red leaned in, silently begging for a kiss, before slapping him on the ass. “We have an appointment to get to, but maybe later we can try this again without clothes.”

denise review

How do I start this review off? I guess I should do that by telling you how much this book affected me. I found myself reading this on the way back from Rainbow Con, in the window seat of the airplane, next to two older women who didn’t know each other, but found a ton to chat about. Next to them was me, curled into the window, headphones on, crying as I was reading this lovely novella.

Why was I crying? I mean it wasn’t as if there was any doubt that this would be the happy ending that Bull and Red so desperately deserved. I was crying happy tears, as they worked through their plans, worked on getting themselves to a place that would remind them that THEY were the most important things to each other, and was able to see how the other couples (and non-couples) in the series were moving ahead in their relationships.

It was all happy tears, I promise! This wasn’t a long novella, but it was just right to get these two men, who love each other so much, to the place that they longed for so badly. Their connection was palpable, which is definitely one of Jessie G’s strength as a writer. She doesn’t just write situation, she writes connections, and those connections are felt throughout any story you read by this author. By adding in connections between the characters, even on levels not fully aware of by the reader, you can feel the layers underneath, and the importance to the couple (or triad) that the other person has created in their life.

This novella spoke to me as a reader, and someone who really loved Bull and Red’s story the first time I read it, but it also spoke to me as a lover of HEA’s. That is why most of us read romance novels, in any genre, for the HEA. Without it, quite often we feel unfulfilled and unsatisified with the story. That was not the case here, you knew the happy ending was there just waiting for you, along the way, the journey drew you along in that HEA. The bonus in this novella was that you were also drawn along in the other stories that Jessie G has either already written, or still has forthcoming as a story, and there you know there will be another HEA just waiting for you.

Did it give me everything I wanted? Of course not, it’s a novella, there is always more I want. That being said, I know the more is coming, and I am willing to sit back and wait for October 31st (see Family Tree below). 4.5 pieces of eye candy.

Writing has been the elusive, life-long goal that seemed to be getting further away as the years went by. It took 30+ years to achieve, but Jessie’s decided that timing is everything. The world wasn’t ready for m/m romance back then and, now that it is, the girl in the closet has finally found her writing home.

Jessie is a firm believer in marriage equality, love at first sight, power dynamics, and happily ever after. She’s a lover of strong secondary characters and series filled with families, biological or chosen. All are themes you’ll find throughout her books.

Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less

✨TEASER: LICKED by @charlienwrites releasing May 12th!#PreOrderNowmybook.to/lickitoneWhy you need to #ONECLICK this book…🍦Very Nerdy Meet Cute 🍦Low Angst🍦Slow Burn🍦Lingerie🍦First Times🍦Blowjobs in Beach Huts🍦Supportive & Nosy Friends🍦Sweetness & Spice🍦“Let Me Help You” 🍦MM RomanceLick It Like A Good BoyIt’s not often you meet gorgeous gothic men at wargaming tournaments. So, of course I tripped over my tongue instead of asking for his number. And despite my friends’ numerous offers to help find him online, we’re too busy opening Lick It!, our new ice cream shop, to spare time for my non-existent love life. But when Jonathan walks through the door on a sunny Friday afternoon, I can’t help but feel like it’s fate. He’s shy, sweet, and we immediately click. Jonathan doesn’t have much experience with relationships, so I’m determined to give him the attention he deserves, even if it means I’m pulled in two directions. With summer heating up and the shop getting hectic, spending time together is getting harder and harder. I don’t know how to balance the long hours and being a good boyfriend, but I know I have to figure it out. Because meeting Jonathan is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. ✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review this awesome release: bit.ly/lickedsignup#charlienovak #mmromance #kindleunlimited The Author Agency ...
