Stranded_600x900synopsis

Cabe got out of the gun-for-hire business the hard way—by nearly dying. Except then his former boss calls in one last favor for one final job. The mission should be simple: get a message to a retired operative in Alaska. But it puts Cabe face-to-face with the one man he doesn’t want to see and can never forget. Not after all the secrets and lies. Not after Brax almost killed him.

Brax Hughes lived hard and retired young to a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Well, that was the plan, but before he can hang up his sniper rifle, he has one last mission: win back Kyle Cabe. Brax wants another chance, wants to come clean, but after months of lying to Cabe, he knows he could face a bullet—or worse—when they meet again. And they will meet. Brax made sure of that.

With a storm moving in and someone lurking outside the cabin, time is running out. Brax needs to talk fast and keep his weapons ready. And his best weapon is the truth.

excerpt

“Ah, the acrid smell of insulin in the morning.” Patrick’s voice is still gravelly from sleep as he turns on the shower and pulls down his black boxer-briefs revealing his tight ass.

Will looks quickly away and back to the syringe he’s filling by the bathroom sink. “I can never get the last dose to eject from the insulin pens. I always have to pull it out with a needle.”

“After living with you, I have an entire list of ways they can improve insulin pen injectors.”

“I should have my lawyer queue up an appointment for you with the pharmaceutical company.”

“You do that, puddin’-pop, and I’ll be there with a PowerPoint presentation. It’ll consist of four words over and over. ‘Do your damn job.’ If pushed, I might throw in a ‘Don’t make me do it for you’ as a closing argument.”

Will pinches a bit of fat from his abdomen and sticks himself quickly. He’s done this for years, but he never stops hating it. Especially syringes. They’re somehow worse than the insulin pens. “I’ll ask Owen to make that happen.”

Patrick snorts from behind the curtain. Will glances over and heat floods his gut as he notices the shadow outline of Patrick’s morning wood. “Oh, um, let me just—” He hustles to deal with the used needle and ends up dropping the syringe in the sink. The scent of insulin grows stronger. “Why does it smell like Band-Aids?” Will muses as he finally gets rid of the used needle and cleans up the syringe, tossing the now-empty insulin pen.

“It’s the preservative. Meta-cresol,” Patrick says. “Mmm, so clinical. So sexy.”

“And you’re so weird.”

“Nothing like the smell of a hospital to get my motor running.”

Will glances back at Patrick’s shadow behind the shower curtain. He’s still got a half chub flopping around as he washes his hair. Will clears his throat.

“Have you considered an insulin pump?” Patrick asks.

Will tries to drag his mind from Patrick’s erection. “I don’t want one.”

“Because?”

“I don’t like the idea of having something attached to me. All the time. Something I have to rely on to do its job.”

“You trust insulin pens have the right dosage, that the dial works, that they’re—“

“I know, Patrick. But I have the right to my own preferences when it comes to my medical treatment.”

“Fair enough. So what’s the deal with your daddy?” Patrick asks sans segue.

“What are you talking about?” Will packs up his testing kit and uses a black marker he keeps in his murse to make a dot on the back of his left hand. He can’t forget to drop by the pharmacy and pick up his replacement insulin pens.

“Papa Molinaro. What’s the deal with him and the holidays? He wasn’t around for Thanksgiving. Will he be dropping down the chimney on Christmas Eve with a bag full of presents for you and a nice hard dick for your mommy? Or what?”

Will rolls his eyes. “Thanks for that image.”

“You’re welcome.”

“He spends Christmas with his daughters. Or at least he used to. I don’t keep in touch with him.”

“Ah, the half siblings you’ve never met. So, no Christmas phone call from Papa?”

“No.” Will feels the familiar hot, impatient squirm of nastiness in his gut. Conversations about his father usually bring it on.

“No Christmas card stuffed with cash?”

“No card, no text, no Skype, no email.”

“Huh.”

“What?”

“He’s obsessed enough with you to have you followed by mobster spies but he can’t pick up a phone. At best, that’s inefficient.”

“At worst?”

“At worst, Starshine, you have a deeply dysfunctional father/son relationship.”

“Wow. You really are a genius.”

Patrick barks a laugh and then begins to hum the new Madonna song he’s been singing off and on for the last two days.

“That’s still stuck in your head, huh?”

“Mmm-hmm.”

“Better than ‘We Three Kings’ mixed with ‘Scarborough Fair,’” Will mutters. Finished with his morning insulin rituals, he starts the water in the sink to begin his shaving routine. “Tony doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to do, and being a reliable member of our family was never something he was good at.”

“When did you last see him?”

“It’s been three years. It can be ten more for all I care.” Will pumps shaving cream into his hand and smears it on his face. “He sweeps in on a whim, wreaks havoc on our lives, and sweeps out again.”

Patrick is quiet behind the curtain and Will glances over to see that he’s rinsing out his hair.

“There’s no pattern, unless you count my mom getting serious with anyone. As soon as my dad gets wind of her being happy with someone else, he has to come to town and wreck it.”

“With his dick.”

Will sighs. “Everything’s about sex for you, isn’t it?”

“Nope. A lot of things. But not everything.” He turns off the water and throws back the curtain. Will averts his eyes quickly, but his hands are already shaking enough that he’s not sure he should be trusted to shave himself. Patrick goes on. “But it’s all about sex between your parents. The Hurting Times churns with scintillating tales of your mom inappropriately hopping on your dad’s pole.”

“Like you know anything about ‘inappropriate’.”

Patrick laughs. “Like I know about that time they banged in the bathroom at some old lady’s funeral. The Hurting Times forum had pages dedicated to that one.”

Will’s ears grow hot.

“And, hey, for the record, even I know a funeral home toilet is a bad place for sex. Public bathrooms are tourist destinations for germs.” He shudders and slings a towel around his hips, thankfully covering his dangling dick. “It’s not sanitary.”

“You are such a jerk.”

“So you tell me.” Patrick grabs a hairbrush and runs it through his wet hair. The dark auburn looks almost brown and glistens brightly in the overhead bathroom lights. “There’s evidence of a genetic component to addiction.” Patrick’s eyes go foggy as he muses, “But is it addiction or abuse? Both probably.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You, mainly. But I’m also talking about them. If The Hurting Times gossip about the two of them is even half true, they are their own kind of addicts. Addicted to each other. Addicted to sex. Addicted to falling in love. Especially your mother. But it’s possible your father uses the intense sexual connection between them as abuse.”

“I…” Will’s fingers clutch at the razor and he drags it against his skin carefully. “I didn’t think you believed in psychology mumbo-jumbo.”

“I don’t believe in spiritual mumbo-jumbo. And, yes, psychology is a lot of bull-honky, but as a neurologist, I can’t deny that thoughts and experiences have physical effects on brain tissue. Dubious and whoo-hoo as most psychological theories seem compared with hard science. What’s your dad’s sign?”

“Really?”

Patrick shrugs and sidles up next to Will at the sink, examining his own face in the mirror.

Will sighs. “Early November. So, what’s that? Scorpio?”

“Ah. And your mother’s a Scorpio too.”

“How do you know? The Hurting Times again?”

“I know because I’ve met her.”

Patrick’s arm slides against his as he reaches for the can of shaving cream. Will moves slightly to the side but Patrick just scoots closer. Will can smell soap on his skin and shampoo in his hair. He wonders what those curls would feel like slick and wet under his fingers.

Patrick rubs on shaving cream and reaches for his razor. His naked chest slides against Will’s bicep.

Will tries to concentrate on shaving, but Patrick’s reflection in the mirror is distracting. His normally pale skin is flushed from the shower and his nipples are pink and peaked. Will clears his throat and scrapes his razor over his face again.

“Addiction,” Patrick muses on. “You didn’t stumble into that on your own. You drink…and your parents screw. That’s how these genes play out. And with both of them being Scorpios…”

Patrick’s arm rubs against him, and Will clicks his tongue against his teeth. Between this touching and Patrick’s speculation about his parents’ sex life, Will can’t tell if he’s going to pop an inconvenient boner or if his balls are going to shrivel up into his body.

“Two Scorpios can burn down a barn from the heat of their mutual orgasms.”

Ball-shriveling wins out. “Okay, well, this conversation has covered everything I never wanted to think about. I’m going to be late to work.”

Patrick studies Will in the mirror.

Will wipes his face clean of cream, decides not to care that he’s got one stripe of shiny skin on an otherwise stubbly face, and, grabbing his murse, leaves the sink to Patrick.

He dresses quickly. He really is going to be late. Not that anyone at Good Works would say anything to him.

“Do you have surgery scheduled?” Will calls out as he slides his wallet into his back pocket and hitches his bag on his shoulder.

“No.”

“Meet you here tonight?”

“Will there be more Capheus?”

“Yes. And more Lito.”

“It’s a TV date with the hubby, then,” Patrick says, stepping out into the room with his sharp grin in place.

The hubby.

“First person home calls room service,” Patrick adds. “Order stuff we both like. We can share.”

“Deal.”

“Oh, and Will? For the record, you’d still be hot even if you wore an insulin pump.”

“Thanks. But I’ll stick with the pens.”

Walking out of the pharmacy twenty minutes later with his new insulin pens, Will wonders what kind of sex Libras and Aries are supposed to have. You already know the answer to that. Hot enough to burn down a barn.

“God, just stop.”

He rubs a hand over his hair and decides to focus on the day ahead. He’ll take it one step at a time. Just like AA has taught him.

paula review

Will and Patrick just keep getting better. In this installment we get a more in depth look into Will and Patrick. I liked learning more about Patrick’s past and his family. Will starts to figure things out about himself and his previous relationship, which I have been waiting for. I don’t know what to make of his family and their unfailing loyalty to Will’s ex. I was so happy to see things heating up between Will and Patrick. I am really enjoying continuing on this journey with these two. The one thing I would like to see is Will become more self assured about his family and how he deals with them telling him how great his ex is.

Chapter ONE

JONATHAN SHIVERED in the early morning air but not from the chill. He wrapped his arms around himself and groaned as his wound tugged against the movement. He relaxed slowly as the pain eased. From where he stood, he could see between the two apartment blocks to where the sun glinted off the Brisbane River. Five years ago he used to watch the ferries puddle their way up and down the river, dropping passengers here at Hamilton and across the way at Bulimba. He’d missed that view for a long time. He wondered if he’d miss the house now that he was leaving it.

The house was gray—morning gray, Anthony had called it, but it had always looked like unwashed, neglected underwear to him. The lines of the house were precise and symmetrical, unlike the yard. The front lawn bore scars, just like his chest. They were from his Cruiser skidding to a stop the night Anthony had sent him to kill Mark. His eyes burned as he thought how close he’d come to doing what his boyfriend told him to.

At the time, he didn’t think he had any other choice. It was kill or be killed. Literally. By the end of that night, Mark had been the only one left uninjured. Liam’s leg had thankfully healed quickly where Anthony had stabbed him. Anthony was still in hospital with a self-inflicted knife wound to the stomach, and Jonathan… Jonathan was done with that life. Anthony’s knife in his chest—so close to his heart it was clearly intended to be fatal—had cured him of whatever delusions he’d held onto that let him believe he was in love with the man. Even Anthony’s assertions that Jonathan was responsible for him being in a wheelchair since the car accident two years before wouldn’t get him to stay.

He was out of it now, or at least he would be as soon as the removalists came and took his stuff away. Then he could begin to heal. The first step had been to learn to breathe again after his lung collapsed when Anthony stabbed him. The next step… he didn’t know what the next step after this was. He wasn’t going to admit it to anyone, but he was just as terrified now, starting a life of his own—on his own—as he was when he thought he was going to die.SGEERC

The trembling began again. Dizzy. Couldn’t catch his breath. He leaned beside the front door and forced himself to bring his mind back to the here and now and looked around again. There was a new section of fence now, and the Cruiser had been repaired and sat at the curb, waiting for him. His cousin must have had the damage repaired while Jonathan was in the hospital—learning how to make his lung work again after his boyfriend had tried to kill him. He shook the thoughts from his head. He had to stop thinking like this or he’d go mad.

Sleep last night had been impossible. The house had been cleaned, but nothing was going to completely remove the blood splattered on the white carpet. His blood.

A low rumble burbled through the air, and a truck turned onto the street. Jonathan’s heart raced. “You can do this,” he whispered, although he wasn’t quite sure which part of “this” he was talking about. It could be dealing with strangers on his own, or it could be leaving Anthony—finally. He pressed the heel of his hand over the dressing on his chest. Staying with Anthony was no longer an option.

The truck stopped and turned to reverse into the driveway. The high-pitched beeping made Jonathan jump and, to calm himself, he focused on the two men sitting in the cab. The driver looked young and blond, the passenger older and shriveled, his hair sticking out in unkempt tangles.

“Two people. Not Anthony. You’re outside, everything’s marked. You don’t need to go inside with them at all if you don’t want to. You can do this.” He counted his breaths in and out. The beeping stopped, the engine cut out, and the driver’s door opened.

Long, well-formed legs slipped from the cab, by-passing the step completely as a muscled body slid to the ground. Khaki cargo shorts bunched enticingly around a spectacular package before settling loosely around slim hips as the man’s boot-clad feet landed on the ground and he stood away from the truck. Jonathan moved his gaze up the body. The worn T-shirt did nothing to hide the trim stomach and prominent pecs and the sleeves framed the rounded deltoids perfectly. Jonathan sighed as he lifted his focus higher to see the man’s wide smile.

Author Interview:

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing E E Montgomery author of Just the Way You Are.

Hi EE, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

I’m very lazy. I also like to achieve things. It took me some time but I finally worked out that those two things aren’t mutually exclusive. I just have to work out the easy way of doing things for the best results. Organisation is the key. When I focus, I’m completely focused, so I try to achieve as much as I can during that time, because as soon as I stop, I stop completely and become distracted by anything that floats by. I’m currently trying to bring a little more organization into my writing because I think it’ll speed the process, but I have to be careful not to organize myself out of the chase. I write because I have to find out what happens. If I plot too carefully, I know how the story is going to end and I lose interest in it.

Part of liking to achieve things goes hand-in-hand with my constant need to know. That means I keep going back to school. I have four degrees—two undergrad and two post-grad—and I have numerous certificates that qualify me for various things (business administration, picture framing, therapeutic massage, plus others). I also take on part time jobs (on top of my usual full-time job) that will teach me something different. I did that several years ago when I wanted to learn about the jewellery industry and how jewellery was made. I ended up staying in that job for seven years.

It might sound cold, but I’ve used the same system when dating. I’ve dated people to learn about golf, sprinting, wine, theatrical performance, tax laws, and costuming among other things. My current partnership began because I wanted to learn about ballroom dancing. This one has stuck.

Writing is another way of fulfilling my need to know. When I get an idea, I have to find out what happens.=

Just the Way You Are is the fourth book in the Just Life series. When I started the series, I had no idea I was writing more than a short story with an unhappy ending, but every time I got to know the characters, and met a few more, I wanted to know their stories too. This last book is Jonathan’s story.

Jonathan has lived with Anthony for ten years. Anthony is selfish, dishonest and abusive and Jonathan hasn’t been happy for a long time. He stays because he feels responsible for Anthony being in a wheelchair, and he can’t see any alternative. At the end of the third book, Just in Time, Anthony attempts to kill Jonathan and then himself. It takes that violence for Jonathan to understand he has to make a different choice with his life, or die. The opening scene of Just the Way You Are is of Jonathan, only just out of hospital, moving out of the house he shared with Anthony. This is his journey from downtrodden, frightened abuse victim, to the man he once thought he could be.

  • How do you develop your plots and characters?

My plotting methodology varies according to the length of the story and the number of sub-plots to be woven into it. Short stories and novellas are usually written fairly quickly with one major plot and little layering. They aren’t plotted anywhere except in my head scene by scene. If I’m writing short, I generally only work on that one project until I finish.

Plotting for my novels varies, but incorporates one, two or three of the following:

  1. I have a notebook where I write down thoughts, background, character descriptions, goal/motivation/conflict for characters, various plot points, descriptions of setting and minor characters and wildlife. Most of the time, by the time the book is finished, edited and submitted, more than half of those descriptions bear no resemblance to the finished product. Sometimes I write scenes in the book and print chapter summaries and stick them in there. I draw maps of the setting and put them in there as well. Anything that helps me build the world.
  2. I use index cards to record a scene map, where every scene is summarized in one or two sentences and then slotted into the place in the plot in which it belongs. I spread the cards out under specific headings (beginning, middle, end) to make sure the plot flows and has the right balance of highs and lows to keep the pace moving and interest high. This is really good when I’m writing a book by the scene rather than chronologically, because I know I’m not going to leave any glaring gaps in the plot.
  3. I use Scrivener for particularly problematic plots because I can move scenes from one place to another easily without disrupting the rest of the document. The program is particularly useful for those books I haven’t plotted at all (just written because it’s there and has to get out) and have structural problems. I’m beginning to rely on the features of Scrivener more and more as it does something similar to my notebook and index cards and keeps an electronic copy of it all. I still like having the book/cards in front of me while I’m working because flipping between screens on the computer, or dividing the screen so I can see everything (and making everything too small for comfort) irritates the socks off me. If I had a 2m wide screen, I’d be happy but I don’t have the wall space for it in my office.

My characters also grow in a three-part process:

  1. I start writing with them, not knowing much about them at all. As I progress, I have to make decisions about appearance, job, background. I keep writing until I hit a wall, then…
  2. I write a character profile, sometimes more than one. I list physical characteristics, family background, education, work history. I interview the character using a set of standard questions. The character profile is changed and added to throughout the writing process. I keep versions of profiles in case I delete something then decide I want it back later. I keep versions with my writing too, for the same reason.
  3. I write a monologue, or scene with another person who might or might not be in the book, just to make sure I have the character’s voice.
  • Who doesn’t love a good hero? Tell us about your protagonist. Was there a real life inspiration behind them?

Jonathan grew out of the third book in the Just Life series. He was the man Anthony moved onto after he’d left Mark. Jonathan was very protected by his family and Anthony was the first person to treat Jonathan like an adult. He moved in with Anthony after their third date, and ended up stuck in a relationship that wasn’t healthy for him. His loyalty and guilt kept him there much longer than he should have stayed. Just the Way You Are follows Jonathan after he leaves Anthony and begins to build a new life for himself.

I have some experience with rebuilding my life after a long-term relationship. I know how difficult it can be to leave and how difficult it can be to stay out. It wasn’t difficult to show that with Jonathan. What was difficult was both recognizing and writing all the emotions that went with it. I hope I’ve done him justice.

  • What real-life inspirations do you use when world building?

Settings: Anything and everything that works. Every world I operate in, even this current one, is different in every book. Some things are the same, eg oxygen to breathe, but a lot of things are different. The characters and the story dictate the kind of world I need to build, from an apartment in New Farm to a space ship in orbit around a planet. I look for the things I have in mind in places like Google maps or images, Flickr, Tumblr, all those *r places on line. If I can’t find something that will help me describe what I want, I describe the image in my head. I make it up.

Society: With contemporary stories, most things are the same. I just focus on one or two topical subjects and drop my people into an extreme situation (extreme for me, not necessarily others).

For SF, I generally choose from one to five things to make different to what most people would accept as normal. That’s usually enough difference for people to feel like it’s another world without it being so different they’re uncomfortable and don’t want to continue reading. At least one of those things will be taken to an extreme. Others will be subtle differences.

Characters and wildlife: The main characters have to be someone most readers would be able to identify with in some way. Other wildlife can be as weird and wonderful as I want it to be. In one book I’m editing at the moment, I have a lifeform that’s based on a smooth leafed cactus plant but it’s sentient and secretes very powerful digestive juices. (Cross The Day of the Triffids with a fly-catcher.)

  • Did you learn anything from this book and what was it?

The most surprising thing I learned while writing Just the Way You Are was something I learned about myself. I was once in Jonathan’s situation—leaving a relationship and dealing with an ex who didn’t want the relationship to end. I’ve moved past it all now. I no longer feel the debilitating fear or total lack of ability to make simple decisions. The thing I learned is that I didn’t process the emotions I felt at that time. I was never even aware, at that time, of the myriad emotions I felt. Fear was there, always, but that was about it. The rest of the time I was an automaton, going through the motions because I knew I had to. I had to get through and out the other side. That’s all I focused on. While I was writing Jonathan’s journey, I became very aware of all the things I’d suppressed at the time. It was both a difficult and enlightening discovery.

  • It’s your last meal on earth. What do you choose?

As I mentioned before, I’m very lazy. Most of my meals are cooked in one or two containers to minimize the cleaning up. If this is my last meal, someone else is going to cook it for me (someone who can really cook). It’ll be something totally different to what I’d normally cook for myself, like fresh Tasmanian salmon. I don’t cook fish because I don’t like the smell in the house and I try not to handle any animal flesh even though I’m no longer vegetarian. It’ll be fresh foods prepared in wonderfully imaginative ways with unusual flavor mixes. It’ll contain lots of vegetables and be organic because the last thing I’ll want on my last day is a migraine from additives.

And someone else will clean up afterwards.

Her philosophy is: We can’t change the world but we can change our small part of it and, in that way, influence the whole. Writing stories that show people finding their own ‘better place’ is part of E E Montgomery’s own small contribution.

Thankfully, there’s never a shortage of inspiration for stories that show people growing in their acceptance and love of themselves and others. A dedicated people-watcher, E E finds stories everywhere. If Only In My Dreams by Keira Andrews: Book Reviews

November 23, 2015 by Denise

if only in my dreamssynopsis

To be home for Christmas, they must bridge the distance between them.

Charlie Yates is desperate. It’s almost Christmas and his flight home from college has been delayed. For days. Charlie promised his little sister Ava he’d be home for her first holiday season since going into remission from leukemia. Now he’s stuck on the opposite coast and someone else grabbed the last rental car. Someone he hasn’t even spoken to in four years. Someone who broke his heart.

Gavin Bloomberg’s childhood friendship with Charlie ended overnight after a day of stolen kisses. With years of resentment between them, they don’t want to be in the same room together, let alone a car. But for Ava’s sake, Gavin agrees to share the rental and drive across the country together.

As they face unexpected bumps along the road, can Charlie and Gavin pave the way to a future together?

denise review

I don’t usually read YA/NA. Not that I have found it to be bad, just because I usually find (and this could totally be in my mind!) that our life experience is so different, I find it hard to connect with the characters. However that being said, I will always read anything by Keira Andrews. She has yet to disappoint me (made me want to throw my kindle, yes, but disappoint, no), and everything I have read I have just loved, and been pleasantly surprised by, in some way.

If Only In My Dreams was another surprise love for me. I had just been asking for an enemies to lovers book, and there comes Keira’s Christmas book to save my day. Gavin and Charlie really worked for me. To have been friends, and then secretly loving each other all this time, made sense. Teenagers find ways to create their own problems, and just don’t know how to get out of them. These two young men did just that. Yet, when thrown together, they find a way to connect back to each other, and bring themselves to another level in their relationship. They had pain, anger, and leftover hostility, and they had to work through it to find a way to meet each other in the middle.

Coming home and dealing with the families they each had wasn’t easy. Charlie’s family truly had no concerns about him, other than his safety, so allowing a man he loved into his life was simple. However, dealing with Gavin’s family, put a fresh coat of pain on all the things they had already dealt with. Yet, they handled it like adults, and moved forward until the time came for healing to begin.

I’m putting my request in now for this couple for next year for a holiday novella from Keira. Maybe see where they are while they are in college? Just a thought. 🙂

guest review

Holiday stories are some of my favorites. There’s something magical about love that starts during what’s been touted as the most wonderful time of the year. If Only in My Dreams by Keira Andrews brought so much hope, love, and healing that I’m sure it’ll leave me smiling the rest of the day.

Okay, so the concept of Charlie running into the boy who broke his heart when they were younger on the complete opposite side of the country and needing to rely on his help to get home might be far-fetched. But it works! Especially because Charlie is so desperate to get home.

There were times when I wished Gavin and Charlie had gotten over the past a bit sooner since this is a novella, but if I’m being honest, I don’t think that would have worked. We needed to see and feel their struggle. We needed the pain to make their reconciliation that much sweeter. And it was!

When I reached the end of the book, I was left wanting more. Not because anything was missing, but because I’m dying to know if Gavin and Charlie are able to make it work once they head back to school. They’re still going to have struggles to overcome, but I truly think they’re going to make it. Maybe they’ll even give Gavin’s mom those grandbabies she was so worried about and prove to her that being gay doesn’t mean they’re missing out on anything in life, it simply means their normal doesn’t look the same as “traditional” families.

If Only in My Dreams will definitely be added to the list of Christmas books I re-read every November and December.

excerpt

Justin’s phone chimed with a text, interrupting Sean’s train of thought.

Justin picked up his phone to read the message. “Ugh.” He put the phone back down without typing a reply and ran his hands through his hair.

“What’s up?”

Justin sighed. “It’s our work Christmas party next weekend. I’ve already got a ticket, and nearly everyone in the office goes, but it’s for partners as well. One of my co-workers, Jess, is bugging me to come, but I can’t face it. I bet Andy’s going to bring his new boyfriend. I know he’s a shit and I shouldn’t let him get to me, but the thought of him parading around with my replacement, and me being there on my own, isn’t very appealing.”

“Is it too late to find someone to take?”Banner300x250

“No, they don’t need final numbers till Monday.”

“Well, then. Take someone else and flirt like crazy in front of him. Show him you can do better and that you’ve already moved on.”

“But I’m not ready to date. It’s only been two weeks, and I’m still at the feeling-sorry-for-myself stage.”

“I’ll go with you,” Sean offered. “I could be your date. We could pretend we’ve got together and are a couple now.”

“Yeah?” Justin looked thoughtful. “Are you sure?”

Duh. It would hardly be much of a sacrifice to flirt with Justin all night. It would actually be a relief not to have to hide the way he felt for a change.

“Sure,” Sean replied. “I think I can manage to fake that I’m arse-over-tit infatuated with you. As long as it’s only for a few hours.”

“Gee, thanks.” Justin rolled his eyes. “You really know how to make an already-wounded ego feel better. But if you’re up for it, we should totally do it. Andy was always jealous of you before you went away. He saw you as competition because we lived together and were so close. I’d love to see his face when I walk in with you on my arm. I think he’ll hate it even if he’s moved on.”

“Okay.” Sean rubbed his hands together, excited at the prospect of getting to piss off Andy. “Let’s do it! Text your friend Jess back and tell her you’re in—with a hot date.”

Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less
