September 26, 2018 by Denise

Disgraced detective turned private investigator, Ray Clancy, left the force with a case unsolved. Finding the killer was no longer his problem, but it still haunted him. How long would he survive the frustration of not knowing before he gave into the compulsion of his nature to solve the crime?

Server, Andrew Shay, existed where he didn’t feel he belonged, living behind the guise of a costume. Yet it paid the bills, and he refused to complain about the little things in life. One night he returned home from work to find his roommate dead and the killer still there. Afraid and alone, his life spiraled and he didn’t know what to do. Rudy had given me a strange look when I’d walked in a few minutes earlier and didn’t take my usual spot at the counter. I was still mentally processing the call I’d received from one Andy Shay. I’d done a quick search for him and found several social media profiles from different Mr. Shays, but didn’t take the time to do a more thorough investigation.

When he’d stated he’d witnessed a murder, I’d resigned myself to dealing with another crazy person, but then after Andy had explained, my tired brain had quickly put the pieces together.

Andy sounded young and justifiably scared. His voice was soft with slightly husky notes. I didn’t know why out of everything the kid’s voice is what I remembered most.

I raised my mug to my mouth and downed half of it, hoping the caffeine would wake me up. I should’ve slept. I’d spent most of the morning researching and hadn’t come up with one mention of similar crimes. Even if there was only one detail the same, I’d grasped at hope, only to be disappointed when the suspect was dead or imprisoned. I don’t know how I felt about that, but I didn’t have time to think too much about it.

I curved my hands around the mug and stared into the dark liquid. The bell going off over the door had me lifting my head. A thin man walked in with clothes that hung on his frame. As soon as I’d looked up our eyes met. There was no doubt in my mind that he was the one I was waiting for, and I slid out of the booth. I sensed the young man’s fear, so I patiently stayed still as he prepared to approach me.

Andy’s first few steps were cautious, as if he hadn’t made up his mind on whether I was an ally or foe. I knew that expression, I’d lost count of how many times I’d seen it over the years. Two decades of dealing with terrified and reluctant witnesses prepared me for anything.

“Mr. Clancy?”

I was slightly taken aback by the sound of that voice in person and blamed it on my lack of sleep. The kid was young, maybe mid-twenties.

“Call me, Ray. Please, take a seat.” I motioned at the bench and waited for him to slide into it. “Coffee?”

“Yes, please.”

“Rudy, refill for me and another for my friend here.” Rudy smirked at me from behind the counter, and I knew what he was thinking. That was the farthest thing from the truth. I was impatient to find out what happened the other night, but I waited for Rudy to approach with the coffeepot and an extra mug.

“Does your date need a menu, or are you planning on being cheap, Clancy?”

“Rudy, don’t fuck with me today.”

The words must have come out harsher than I’d thought because I caught the kid flinching in my peripheral. Skittish. I was going to have to temper my normally gruff nature.

“Cranky,” Rudy muttered, and I waited for him to drop off the menu, then return to the opposite side of the counter.

I watched in horror at the amount of sugar the kid doctored his coffee with and tried to hide my disgust behind my own mug of straight, black coffee. The way coffee was meant to be drank. Andy’s hands shook, and if I hadn’t paid closer attention, I would’ve missed that. I warred with the decision to let Andy take the lead and start the conversation or broach the subject myself.

My curiosity won. “Why did you contact me?”

“I researched the case. A crime reporter, I can’t remember his name right now, well, he did some stories and your name was mentioned. Your name came up in several articles.”

“But why are you here? I’m not a cop.”

Those four simple words still stung my pride. I should be on the case. Who’s to say that I wouldn’t have caught the guy sometime in the last six months.

Holy thriller, batman…. this one was a doozy!

Ok, now I’m a huge Dabney fan, so I knew this one was going to be a good one, but it’s so different from her other reads, I didn’t know what to expect when she collabed with someone I’d never read before. So, we started out with Ray, who was a good detective in a cesspool of shady people. Being framed for a crime that he didn’t commit, I’ve gotta say, wasn’t a good start for me…. If you read any of my reviews, you’ve gotta know my biggest pet peeve is terrible people getting away with being terrible people, and it seemed like this happened ….. keep reading!

After taking a deal and losing his spot on the force, he starts a PI practice…. It allowed him to stay in the type of work he was in before, I reckon. He got to keep his gun, and it kept him out of jail at least… but I kept my eye on Captain Green, I didn’t trust him from the very beginning and had you asked me if he had a hand in the business what was going on in the book, I’d have said definitely. I was really kept in suspense with the who-dun-it and the why.

See, Ray was smack in the middle of a serial case where young men were getting mutilated and murdered when he got fired. As one could imagine, it was hard to let go, but he didn’t have much choice. He did have a friend or two that let him in on some details, but enough to keep track of what the serial killer was up to…. Other than the killing of course. That’s when he meets Andy…..

Andy came home from work to witness his roommate, and best friend murdered and being mutilated. The police (Captain Green), wasn’t doing much about it, not even informing the public that a serial killer was in their hood. Why they kept denying it, I still have no idea… but, Andy was scared, and nobody seemed to care that he was on the killer’s radar….I mean, he did see the guy…. That irked me, another black mark against Green… seriously, how did he still have a job at the end?

Anyway, he called Ray, having gotten his name by doing a little digging himself, and Ray, attracted to Andy, but also needing to solve this case, agreed to help…. It’s a confusing runaround, trying to gather evidence and motive and any link at all that would give them a clue who was terrorizing the young men of New West City… Ray used some of his old contacts that he knew growing up, and I had to admit, even though they were criminals….well-known criminals, I kinda loved them anyway… Especially Bradford and Richie. I wouldn’t mind a book about either one of them!

And like I said, by the end of it, when everything came together, I was surprised and no longer confused, and I felt like my heart was going to jump right out of my chest. It’s a real page turner for sure and if you enjoy murder mysteries with some man on man love thrown in…. don’t pass this one up. There are some typical Dabney errors, like, no question marks when one is obviously needed, but if you’ve read any of her books at all, you’ll know she’s allergic to the question mark. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest… but I know it’ll be a common complaint. So heads up…Overall…I really, really enjoyed it! Sweet ending….would most definitely recommend.

5 stars from me!

J.M. Dabney is a multi-genre author who writes mainly LGBT romance and fiction. She lives with a constant diverse cast of characters in her head. No matter their size, shape, race, etc. she lives for one purpose alone, and that’s to make sure she does them justice and give them the happily ever after they deserve. J.M. is dysfunction at its finest and she makes sure her characters are a beautiful kaleidoscope of crazy. There is nothing more she wants from telling her stories than to show that no matter the package the characters come in or the damage their pasts have done, that love is love. That normal is never normal and sometimes the so-called broken can still be amazing.

Hi everybody, I’m Crystel, and I’m so happy to be here at Two Chicks Obsessed today. Thanks for helping me celebrate the release of my m/m romance novella GLACIER GOLD!

I’m going to talk about the fun of looking for beautiful guys to cast for my two main characters, snowboarders Andi and Justin, online.

I love surfing the net on the lookout for cute men who could star in my stories (or be on my covers). I try not to do it before I’ve written the first draft, though: my characters tend to develop in unexpected ways during the writing process, inside and out, and while pictures can be inspiring, I’ve found they can also limit the imagination. And then there’s the problem of procrastination: you can kind of lose track of what you’re supposed to be doing once you embark on that google search for “black-haired blue-eyed actors”…

It’s funny with these searches; sometimes you find a picture of a guy who’s one of your heroes to a T, looking exactly like you dreamt him up. From the cool smirk to the color of his shirt (if minus the glasses, but maybe he just took them off for the photo). It happened to me with Andi from GLACIER GOLD. I’m sharing the picture here, to give you an idea what it was like for Justin to see Andi behind the hotel reception for the first time, looking all sleek and trim and perfect. A little arrogant, a little enigmatic, and his eyes this hypnotic mix of ice and fire… (I’m so in love with Andi!)

Only when I was knee-deep in the process of editing GLACIER GOLD and needed a break from the hunt for stray commas, continuity errors and the like and treated myself to an update on a few celebrities’ private lives did I realize that my protagonist, Justin, actually looks a lot like a younger, shorter Chris Hemsworth in the movie “Thor”.

I love Chris with the long blond hair and the extra twenty pounds of muscle. And the way he plays Thor, the way he lends the character that certain purity, that cheerful energy and charming simplicity of soul? I love that even more. His Thor could be Justin’s older brother any day.

Chris is a lovely sports guy to stalk online too: he does all kinds of sports, including snowboarding, looking great in any gear. It’s a safe guess he’d look nice in the sauna too.

I invite you to lean back and imagine him as Justin relaxing all alone in the vapor bath in this scene from GLACIER GOLD, the moment when it all started…

Leaning my head back against the wet wall, I close my eyes to soak up some warmth and think of the guy from reception for a bit.

A. Fankhauser. That’s what it said on his shirt pocket. It’s A for angel, in all likelihood. Honest to God, this man is the most beautiful guy I have ever laid eyes on, so beautiful I had trouble wrapping my head around it. I had expected a nice Austrian lady in a dirndl to book us in, the kind that was on the hotel home page. Not a supermodel.

God, he looked so damn trim in his black button-down and his horn-rimmed glasses and with his shiny dark hair slicked back over his pretty head.

I’ve moved my hand too close to my cock. It’s what happens when you’re relaxing on your own in a cozy place while being bare-ass naked. And I’ve got to stop this now. I’ve got to think of something else, and quickly.

Opening my eyes, I see another sign mounted to the wall opposite me, right above two bowls on a shelf. Squinting through the vapor wafts, I look for the part in English and learn that this is pine honey and rock salt, and that a honey-and-salt peeling will give me baby-soft skin.

It can never hurt to have baby-soft skin. I get up, slipping a bit on the melting ice cubes, and start slapping generous amounts of honey onto my chest, stomach, and back with a long wooden ladle. For good measure, I sprinkle a couple handfuls of salt onto the mess.

It quickly spreads everywhere, and I mean everywhere, causing a nasty itch where I need it least.

I still sit down and try to hold up for the sake of the promised effects, but after a minute or so I can’t take it anymore. Quickly I get up again, grab for the hose that’s attached to the wall next to the door, and switch on the water. Putting a foot onto the bench, I aim the jet straight at my ass to try and rinse the biting stuff away.

Phew, my blood pressure doesn’t seem to like this. And the tiles are even more slippery now with the honey-salt mix all over the place. Oh man, I need something to hold on to—

The next moment I’ve crashed to the floor in one smooth, curved motion.

As I struggle to process what just happened, I’m hit by a flash of brightness and a cool draft.

“Everything okay?”

Someone is in the doorway.

Through the vapor and the sweat running into my eyes, I can make out a tall figure looming above me. Must be Jay who came to look for me.

I rub at my eyes.

“It’s fine,” I say, looking up at Jay.

Only it isn’t Jay. It’s the angel from reception, without the glasses. …

Two decades of married life later, she still loves fictional men—especially when there are two of them who are meant to be! She likes it best when she can create their plights and fights herself, and she can always be counted on to throw in some sizzling hotness and a lot of feels. Here’s her author promise: no fade-outs when things get steamy or emotional, and an ending that will leave you smiling.

Crystel is a lawyer by training, a lover of pastry, and a believer in Happy Ever Afters. Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, and a North Sea girl at heart, she lives in the beautiful Austrian Alps with her husband and four kids.

“Dominic, you are amazing.” Another push. “Bedroom. Now.”

So he moved and entered, and it was all the colors he loved. Soft blue walls, like the color of the ocean. Green accents with pops of gold. Rich brown furniture. The hues were so Adrian, too. Dom made it halfway into the room when he spotted something hanging from the solid wood bedframe. “Are those manacles on your bed?”

Adrian gave him a less subtle shove toward said bed. “They’re leather cuffs. And yes, they’re used for exactly what you think they’re there for.”

“Tying guys up.”

“Tying people up.”

Dom turned to meet Adrian’s gaze. “You’re bi?”

Not even a blink. “Pansexual. Is that an issue?”

“No, it’s just—” He saw the flicker of hurt and annoyance in Adrian’s face. “No. It’s not an issue at all.”

Confusion lay in Adrian, and he crossed his arms.

Shit, shit. His big clunky mouth when he was out of it. “You’ve been entirely focused on me,” Dom said. “Like, completely. Whenever I’ve been with someone else, they notice other people. But you—”

Adrian bore down on Dom, his smile back in part, but the lines on his face so fucking intense. “You need better lovers, Dominic Bradley.”

Dom’s thighs hit the bed, and his ass a moment later. A second after that, Adrian’s mouth was on his neck, and Dom’s back was pressed against the mattress. A hand skimmed his thigh, as that masterful tongue and mouth moved over Dom’s jaw before claiming his mouth.

His mind was a reeling pile of mush when Adrian drew back. “How could anyone look anywhere else when you’re in the room?”

“You’re such a fucking flatterer,” Dom said, “I’m nothing special.”

“Mmm. I’m gonna disagree with you there.” Adrian took his mouth again, and under Dom went until Adrian finally relented and stood. “I need out of the fucking suit.”

“Yeah, you do,” Dom said.

Adrian grunted. “Don’t give me lip.”

“And this is probably where I shouldn’t say ‘yes, Daddy.’”

That got Dom a huge laugh. “Fuck, you’re mouthy. Ever been gagged, Dominic? Because I can totally give your mouth something other than my cock or pie to suck on.” There was just a hint of warning in those words, though.

Dom shivered from the weight of Adrian’s gaze. “Never been gagged.” He paused. “I’ll be good.” But then the other thought crossed his mind. “Wouldn’t mind trying being gagged.”

Adrian let out a huff of air and worked at his tie. “Of course you wouldn’t. But for now, lie back and watch.”

Dom did. Adrian didn’t put on a show or anything, but watching him undress was something else. The tie went first, and it landed on a nearby chair. Stained suit jacket followed, with the casual ease of someone who’d been wearing them for years. Cufflinks—pretty silver ones that flashed in the light—came next, and Adrian turned to put them on his dresser.

His ass was spectacular, and Dom let out a grunt. The leer Adrian threw over his shoulder burned straight through Dom, and despite his instant orgasm earlier, his cock hardened at the sight.

Adrian turned as he unbuttoned his shirt, opening it to reveal what looked suspiciously like really well-defined abs, and when he shrugged it off, Dom murmured his appreciation.

Not just abs. Adrian was built. Not in a bulky way, but his frame was covered in lean, chiseled muscles and dusted with the same red-brown hair that graced his head. A thicker trail led from his stomach down into his semen-spotted dress slacks.

“You’ve already seen my cock,” Adrian said.

Dom shook his head. “Just swallowed it. Didn’t get to admire the look.”

So, this is a first for me with this author, and I’m not usually a fan of celebrities of any kind….like, at all…but, something about Dominic’s nerdy, bow-tie wearing submissive self, had me curious about him and his story. I didn’t originally know this was book 2 in a series, but it read as a standalone, and I didn’t feel I missed anything from the previous story….

Now, Dominic, is the guitarist in a high-school band with his friends- gone famous. He was incredibly shy and reserved….until he transformed himself into Domino…the sexy guitarist in Twisted Wishes. Now… I’m not sure, I’ve never needed to have a different persona, so I’m not sure quite how that would work, being in two different headspaces enough to be two different people. I know that Domino seemed like kind of a slut though, and it just didn’t seem like Dominic…. That’s the point though I guess, but it just didn’t feel genuine for me.

Then, Adrian, I forget what he does….but he’s the office type, a little bit older than Dominic, and he seemed a little pretentious when they met at the little bar that they both frequent when Dominic has down time. Now, what I didn’t care for, is just like Dominic was two different people, Adrian seemed like two different people to me too. He was flirty and kind of sweet, wanting a date and to get to know more about Dominic, but then next scene, when he was at the gym with Jackson, his trainer/friend/friends with benny’s that occasionally had threesomes with I guess… I dunno, I actually thought he was a different peron altogether. I just didn’t like how he acted then. Why are all the guys so easy and whorey and promiscuous? Gross. (yes, I can slut shame… I think it’s gross)…. Once I got to know Adrian a little more, it didn’t bother me, but it put me off at the beginning.

Now, because Dominic seemed he could be two different people when he needed to be; he was able to do things without being recognized… again, I don’t see how, but whatever… but, Adrian didn’t know anything about Domino…. Now, I didn’t mind this, because they’d only just met and Dominic wanted to keep his anonymity. Not to mention, he was able to let himself go, and let Adrian give him what he needed. In saying that, I’ll also say that I’m not a fan of BDSM…. Light stuff is kind of hot, but flogging and the whole pain scene just isn’t for me. I liked this though, it was light, there was no flogging or canning and I thought it was actually kind of beautiful how Dominic needed Adrian, and the ways in which Adrian helped him let go.

Of course, anytime a relationship starts out with a big secret (like Dominic being a megastar)…. It’s absolutely going to come out eventually, and when it does, you’re going to look like the dishonest one and feelings are going to be hurt and the whole time, you’re going to be wishing that you just told the truth from the beginning when it started becoming more than just a hookup. I mean, they were telling each other they loved each other, and Adrian still didn’t know, so of course that’s exactly what happened.

Fortunately, Adrian was sweet and patient and understanding, and it was over as quickly as it came on. What I also didn’t like, was I really wanted Adrian to get some karmic justice from that awful man that he worked with. It seemed like a sideline problem, just mentioned for something to mention, but I would’ve loved to have seen him get put in his place, or at least if Adrian would’ve quit and his boss and William flounder a bit…. Didn’t happen though, oh well. It was just another snibbit that irked me.

Overall, I probably wouldn’t read anymore in this series, but I was happy with cute way it ended and as always, I’m a sucker for a happy ending.

Tanner’s eyes snapped open. He didn’t know what had woken him so suddenly, but the moment he did, he realized he’d fallen asleep with Cole on the couch, that Cole’s head was on his shoulder.

It was a little weird…and a little not weird…or maybe he was looking for it to be weird or not? As he sat there a moment, focusing on the heat of Cole against him, the feel of his head on his shoulder, it felt good. Christ, Cole felt good to him.

It wasn’t the first time that seeing Cole, touching his skin, studying his hands or his back, felt right. That truth hit him in the gut, so the moment Cole groaned in his sleep and turned his head, Tanner slipped out from under the blanket.

For a moment he considered trying to lay Cole down. Did his knee hurt? Was the position uncomfortable? But he didn’t know how to do it or if he should do it, and he suddenly really fucking needed to get out of the house.

Tanner shoved his feet into his shoes. Thankfully, he was wearing jeans and a tee he’d put on before going to look for Cole last night. His keys were on the kitchen counter, so he swooped them up and quietly sneaked out of the house.

Last night had been…something. How he could breathe easier after the loss of Emma, how much Cole’s friendship meant to him, Tom and Charlie, and falling asleep on the couch. It was…a lot, and he wished like hell he had his fishing supplies so he could go fishing.

So what could he do?

Guilt made his stomach tumble because he knew Cole would wake up and wonder where he was, might even think he’d done something wrong, which he hadn’t. Tanner just didn’t know how to do…whatever he was doing. It was like he was learning how to live again.

He drove around for a little while, taking in the small town he and Emma had loved. What would she think about his friendship with Cole? He knew Emma, and she would be glad Tanner had him, that he’d allowed himself to have someone.

The more he drove, the more he began to feel slightly foolish for leaving the way he had. Who cared if they fell asleep on the couch together? Who cared if having Cole around eased some of the weight in his chest?

So instead of driving around town for no reason, Tanner turned and headed for the general store. He’d get some bacon and eggs, then go home and make breakfast for them.

This book was really two stories in one. Tanner and Cole now and Charlie and Tom then. One completely broke my heart, but the other gave me hope.

Tanner buys and moves into his wife’s dream house. Except that his wife died a year ago. Since then, Tanner is just a shell of a man. His wife knew he would be like that and begged him not to. The depiction of Tanner in his grief for his wife was just so real. He didn’t hate the world. He didn’t proclaim how the world was unfair. He didn’t say he would never love again. Instead, he was more just existing. Living day by day, missing his wife. Wanting to live up to her expectations of him. He seemed to mostly just feel nothing. And if you’ve ever had depression, you know the feeling of nothing.

Cole is fresh out of prison and trying to just make it in life. But getting a job is difficult when you check the felon box on an application. A chance meeting and a bit of kindness bring Cole and Tanner together.

I’m going to say my biggest critique is that Cole’s crime and subsequent punishment were kind of weak. A little more of a solid crime for 4 years in prison wouldn’t have been hard to do and still stick to the story line.

Yes, that is my biggest critique. Because I really loved this book.

I loved that both men stick to themselves even though they both crave intimacy. I love that there wasn’t even flirting for almost half of the book. There are a few mentions of Cole admiring Tanner, but quickly putting it away as inappropriate. And I loved that they not only read the journal together, but did it slowly.

Both of these characters could have been the the that really annoy me. Tanner could have put up the proverbial walls that Cole would have to knock down, but he didn’t. Cole could have been a total jerk with a chip on his shoulder, but he wasn’t. So instead of getting slogged down with 2 characters with “issues”, we watch 2 characters gravitate to each other and learn to love again.

I was warned by someone who beta read this book that I would cry. I got like 75% in and no tears. False sense of security there. Holy sobbing mess.

I’m fairly certain this is my favorite collaboration of theirs. So far.

Honey From the Lion by Jackie North: Exclusive Guest Post and Excerpt with Release Day Review

September 21, 2018 by Denise

Soulmates across time. A love that was meant to be.

In present day, Laurie, tired of corporate life, takes a much-needed vacation at Farthingdale Dude Ranch.

The very first night a freak blizzard combined with a powerful meteor shower takes Laurie back to the year 1891. When he wakes up in a snowbank, his only refuge is an isolated cabin inhabited by the gruff, grouchy John Henton, who only wants to be left alone. His sense of duty prevails, however, and he takes Laurie under his care, teaching him how to survive on the wild frontier.

As winter approaches, Laurie’s normal fun-loving manner make it difficult for him to connect with John, but in spite of John’s old-fashioned ways, the chemistry between them grows.

Sparks fly as the blizzard rages outside the cabin. Can two men from different worlds and different times find happiness together?

A male/male time travel romance, complete with hurt/comfort, true confessions, a shared bed, fireplace kisses, the angst of separation, and true love across time.

Time Travel and Me by Jackie North

I am a voracious reader, and even when I was a kid, I loved time travel books. There are a bunch of good ones out there for kids (The Ruby Ring, When Marnie Was There, A Wrinkle in Time, Tom’s Midnight Garden, The Time Garden, Charlotte Sometimes), and I devoured them!

What drew me was not the “clever kids having adventures” trope, though that was fun. No, it was the idea of going Back In Time. I longed to escape and was desperate to get away from a home life that was hectic and scattered and unpredictable. I wanted something simpler, more structured, more gentle and slow-paced.

I wanted to wear a bonnet and button-up shoes, a gingham dress that went to my ankles, and an apron. I wanted to carry my lunch in a tin dinner pail, and drink cool well water from a dipper. I wanted to carry a slate and do sums with a slate pencil. In short, I wanted to be Laura Ingalls, minus the grasshopper plague, the prairie fires, and Nellie Olsen, of course. (Although Nellie, to her credit, made a very good foil for Laura.)

Now that I’m grown, my own life is very simple and unhectic. You’d think it was boring, but I call it peaceful. I live inside of a rhythm that suits me. When co-workers ask me what plans I have for the weekend, I have to scramble to come up with something suitably entertaining because the reality of what I have planned would not be pass muster.

The irony of all of this is that now that I’m writing my m/m time travel romance series, Love Across Time, I put my characters through the most hectic and rugged experiences imaginable. They do not get to drink cool well water from a dipper until they’ve been through the fire of adapting to a time not their own. They are misunderstood and isolated, experience hunger and wild weather, and function with a 21st century mentality in a world that simply doesn’t understand them. They represent one of my favorite tropes: Fish Out Of Water.

All of my characters get an HEA, of course, but I like to be mean to them first. There are all kinds of ways that allow me to do this and contrast our time with theirs. Take, for example, the food. With a Lucky’s and a Whole Foods nearby, I can have pretty much any food I care to eat. But for my characters, well, that’s another story!

Take this moment from my new book Honey From the Lion. Laurie (the protagonist hero), through the magic of blizzards and meteor showers has been transported back to the year 1891.

He’s given shelter by John Henton (the love interest), who is living out the winter in an isolated cabin with the job of looking after the railroad’s surveying equipment. (John just wants to be alone, and yet Laurie has nowhere else to go, and voila, Cabin Fic happens!)

John, as a dutiful host, serves a meal that consists of bacon, potatoes, onions, and cornbread. (And oh, my gut clenches at the thought of surviving on this fare, but that’s what folks ate in the year 1891 on the high plains of Wyoming.)

On the table is a bowl of something white and lumpy that is meant to be butter. Laurie comments (or complains, depending on your point of view) that butter should be yellow. John replies with the sagacity of his age that butter is the color it is when it’s churned, not the color you want it to be.

Partly this is fun, because it lets me show how Laurie thinks (and yes, to me, butter should be yellow), and how John thinks. I’m pretty certain that John would say what my Nana used to say when I wanted something my own way: “What do you want, egg in your beer?” Although now, I think the Cool Kids would say, “Why you gotta be extra?” Which is pretty much the same thing!

As the story develops, Laurie comes to adore the food John serves because he comes to realize how much effort it takes to not only prepare it, but also to gather the food, to keep the cabin warm, and to help them both survive until spring.

To bring this back to the time travel trope, Laurie gains a new perspective on how easy his own life in the 21st century was, and how hard John’s life is in the year 1891. Time travel is like any other travel, it opens your eyes wide to the differences that separate us, and makes you appreciate how we are the same under the skin.

For your reading pleasure, here is an excerpt where John is serving up dinner; he doesn’t know that Laurie is from his future, but instead, that he’s come from Back East:

When Laurie went to join John at the table, John had just placed the last of the food down, and was bending to light a kerosene lamp, which cast bright silver circles on the wood.

John sat down with his back to the fire, so Laurie took the other seat with his back nearest the door. He could feel a cold draft coming from somewhere, but was distracted by the meal that John had prepared. There was a plate of fried bacon slices, a bowl of cornbread bricks, and a bowl of what looked like fried potatoes and onions. None of it resembled Laurie’s idea of what supper was. Still, he didn’t want to be rude.

“What’s in the jar?” asked Laurie, pointing.

“Tomato preserves,” said John with a bit of a grunt, as if Laurie should already have known that. “There’s butter, if you want it.”

Laurie looked where John was pointing, which was at a wooden bowl with several pale lumps in it. It might be butter, but it actually looked like old white frosting scraped from a can.

“That’s not very yellow,” said Laurie, reaching for it. “Butter is yellow,” he told John, nodding his head to emphasize this.

“Maybe back east, where you come from,” said John. “Out here, butter is the color that it is when it’s churned.”

Laurie gave John a mock salute and points off for being so gloomy and serious. And just as he reached for the plate of bacon, John lifted it and scraped off half onto Laurie’s plate. He did the same thing with the hunks of cornbread and fried potatoes and onions, each dish divided neatly and fairly into two portions.

“Help yourself to the butter and tomatoes,” said John. With his fork gripped in his fist, he began to shovel in the food, slowly and methodically, as though it gave him no pleasure at all and was merely sustenance. Which, as Laurie considered it, in 1891 was how it probably had been.

Square One by JJ Harper: Release Day Blitz, Review and Excerpt

September 20, 2018 by Denise

Xander is angry and fed up of being signed off work for something that was out of his control. He loses himself in alcohol and one-night stands, anything to dull the pain in his head.

Jonah is enjoying the freedom away from his small-town life, living life to the full in a big city. A few weeks away from starting his job as a firefighter, he embraces the nightlife and the men found in the clubs. One man, in particular, catches his eye, and not even exchanging names, they spend a night lost in each other, and then another. Still not bothering to find out any more about each other, they go their separate ways.

Until they find themselves face-to-face at work.

Unable to stay away from each other, they embark on something that soon morphs into so much more. Deeper, more intense, looking a lot like love.

But will it be enough when Jonah hears some life-changing news and he turns to Xander for support?

Square One is part of the Under The Uniform series by Aubergine Publishing.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

Waking up, I stir and move my hand across the bed, finding it empty. I hate it when he does this. I want us to wake up lazily wrapped around each other, then mess around, getting all hot and sweaty again. Listening out, I can hear him moving around downstairs. I look to see where my clothes are because I have come to learn that Jonah doesn’t do mess. Not one bit, so it’s no surprise to see them folded neatly on the chair in the corner by the window. Before I can move to get out of bed, I hear him whistling softly, almost under his breath as he comes back upstairs.

Pushing upright, I lean back on the headboard and wait for him to come back in. I smile when I see him with a tray full of coffee cups and toast.

“You’ve brought me breakfast.” I laugh softly as he blushes slightly.

“Yeah, I woke up and was hungry, so I thought I’d bring it all back up to you too.” He hands me the tray, then slips his joggers down his legs and folds them neatly on the end of the bed. Climbing back in next to me, he drops a soft kiss on my eager mouth.

“This is awesome. I can’t remember the last time I had breakfast in bed. Thank you, Jonah.” I kiss him again.

Looking at the tray, I see he’s done more than just coffee and toast. There’s orange juice and waffles with some strawberries too. His eyes shine bright with happiness as he reaches over and snags his mug and a slice of toast.

“What do you want to do today?” he garbles at me with his mouth chewing his toast noisily. This should annoy me, but with him, it seems cute.

“I’ve got boring stuff like my laundry and a trip to the supermarket. I got back later than I thought yesterday and really only had time to shower and change before coming here.” I look at him as I grab a strawberry. “What about you?”

“I don’t have anything planned, so I can hang out with you if you’d like?”

“You won’t be too bored. It’s only Tesco and dirty clothes?”

“Nope, I’ve missed you. I’d like to spend it with you, if you don’t mind.”

I grin at him and kiss his cheek. “I’d like it too.”

So, after breakfast and a lot of fooling around in bed that ended with needing another shower, we make it out of the house.

Looking up at the clear blue April sky, I can feel the warmth of the spring sun on my face. I smile at Jonah as he slides his Oakley sunglasses on.

“You look fucking sexy, Jo. C’mon before I drag you back inside.” I hold out my hand for him and give it a squeeze as he clasps it.

“Yeah, we’ve done enough of that this morning.” He chortles.

“Never. There’s no such thing as too much sex! As a gay man, you should be ashamed of yourself.” I pull him up to me and kiss his grinning mouth. “Get in the car,” I mumble against his lips.

Okay, so two hot firefighters, that’s really all I needed to want to read this book. I kind of went into it blind apart from that… LOL, I’m easy. So, in this one, we have Jonah and Xander.

Xander is off on medical leave until he can get his head sorted after a call gone bad where they lost a twelve year old little girl. Although there was nothing he could do, he carried the weight of it, and understandably so… I can’t imagine how hard it must be to be a first responder of any kind. I liked the realness of his situation and the way it was handled…. In this aspect at least. There are other parts of this story that I did not agree with, but we’ll get to that in a minute.

Now, meeting at a club, Jonah and Xander have an incredible connection, though they don’t catch each other’s names the couple times’ theyd run into each other. What I didn’t like was that everyone seemed to sleep with this bartender Curtis…. Literally, everyone; even Xander’s ex that pops up out of nowhere. And they’re all okay with Curtis, knowing that he sleeps with everyone, including their boyfriends?? Even Xander didn’t care that he’d slept with the ex, as well as Jonah, after he slept with Jonah?? I didn’t like that at all…. I’m a slut shamer. Absolutely.

Anyway, after another weekend hookup without exchanging names, Xander is set to go back to work. He’s been cleared, and the next day he’s back on rotation…. Problem is… the nameless hookup he can’t stop thinking about is his new partner! Then…. They go from 0-100 in about a day. Neither of them do relationships, neither of them hook up with the same person twice, but the first day they work together, they decide that after two weekends of hooking up…. They’re boyfriends….. they didn’t call it that til the next week, but that’s what it was. It felt like the story should’ve been over at 50%….. but then we get thrown a curve ball.

Jonah has a son…. A teenage son with the only girl he’s ever slept with. His teenage best friend from 15 years ago. Cliché, eh? Except she was supposed to have had an abortion and moved away back then. Unfortunately, when her husband- that has raised Jonah’s son his entire life, finds out that Jonah’s son (Christian Grey- yes, that’s his actual name) Kit (nicknamed, thankfully), when he finds out that he’s gay, he flips and all the sudden doesn’t want to be his dad anymore…. And Kit’s mom just goes along with it. Of course, she cries… but are you kidding? You’re going to choose a homophobe over your child???

I didn’t like how everyone kept blowing this kid off. I understood that it came out of left field for Jonah, and he needed to get his head around it and all, but, even he said that if it was going to cause problems with Xander, he’d choose Xander…. What is wrong with these people? This is a kid…. YOUR kid, and for neither of them to put that kid first, made me sick. And I loved Xander and Jonah together, even if it did go at warp speed and the dialogue was cringy at times… I enjoyed them together, they were good for each other. But, seriously…. You’re going to make the whole second half of the story about the kid, but, nobody really cared about the kid. Least, not in my opinion.

Anyway, I loved Xander’s family, but we get a face full of Jonah’s mom several times. She seems awful, but then she just disappeared. No more mention of Kit’s mom, after she said okay, the kid can live with you so I can keep my husband….(okay, she didn’t say that, but it’s what it felt like to me)

Overall, I felt there was a lot going on in this story, and a lot of it I didn’t agree with….I kind of felt on the fence with it, but it ended well.

Cute. I’ll go with 3 pieces of eye candy for me on this one.

You will normally find her in the living room—typing away—with her dog, Maud. As a hopeless romantic, JJ dives into her stories, always falling in love with her men, making sure they get the happy ever after they deserves, even if they do have to work hard for it.

As a bona fide bookaholic, coffee-addicted, wine-drinking and swear-like-a-sailor type of girl, she has yet to work out how to act her age!! LOL. And she has no intentions of growing up or growing old gracefully.

JJ lives in a small, very quiet, village in Lincolnshire, UK, with her husband and dog, and spends all day dreaming up stories full of really hot men.

football talent, and I was always a disappointment. That’s not Hunter’s fault, but I still hated him for it, and even more so when he was kind to me. Looking at me with those soft blue eyes when my father said something hurtful; sticking up for me with my brother.I knew he was beautiful the first time I saw him, felt my heart race and my stomach flip, but when I started looking at him the way a guy shouldn’t look at his brother’s boyfriend—or hell, even his best friend—it gave me another reason to hate him and myself.#rileyhart #sportsromance The Author Agency ... And I'm starting to believe it.Chase is a standalone MM romance about two guys who don’t make any sense together, but they're pulled to each other in a magnetic, obsessive, all-consuming love story.✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review this awesome release: bit.ly/CHASESIGNUP#coverreveal #raleighruebins #mmromance The Author Agency ... ✨Let’s celebrate! It’s release day for HEARTSMASHED by @brookeblaine1! Grab it in KU!#OneClickNowAmazon U.S. amzn.to/4sljgbqAmazon Worldwide mybook.to/HeartsmashedWhy you need to #ONECLICK this book…🔥Fake Boyfriend/Fake Dating🔥Mistaken Identity🔥Opposites Attract🔥Jealous Ex🔥Forced Proximity🔥Emotional Healing🔥Fake Escort Mix-Up🔥Heartbroken Radio Host🔥Late Night Love Advice Gone Wrong🔥“I Didn’t Mean To Fall"🔥MM Romance He hired a fake boyfriend for the weekend. The man who showed up wasn’t the escort.Sawyer Montgomery spends his nights broadcasting heartbreak on his prime-time radio show—spinning sad songs, giving terrible love advice, and pretending he’s totally over the ex who shattered his heart.(Spoiler: he’s not.)But when he needs a fake boyfriend to survive a weeklong family celebration with that very ex, hiring an escort seems like the perfect solution.Simple. Efficient. No emotions required. The only problem? The man he mistakes for the escort… isn’t one.Beckett Calder walks into the hotel lounge expecting to meet his blind date. Instead, he finds Sawyer—a romantic disaster who clearly thinks Beckett is the escort he hired.Beckett should correct the misunderstanding. He should walk away.(Spoiler: he doesn’t.)Because there’s something about Sawyer—maybe it’s the sarcasm, the bruised heart, or the way he looks like he could really use someone on his side—that makes Beckett say yes.Now he’s pretending to be Sawyer’s devoted boyfriend. For an entire week.Which would be manageable…if the chemistry between them didn’t feel so dangerously real.Because the longer they pretend, the harder it becomes to remember it’s all an act.And when the week ends, Beckett might be the one mistake Sawyer never wants to stop making.#newbookalert #brookeblaine #mmromance The Author Agency ...
