The One I Want by Megan Slayer: New Release Review

March 26, 2019 by Denise

Book one in the Must Love Dogs series.

Who knew love could be found at the dog park?

Cameron Johnson wants to fall in love. He’d also like the man he’s interested in to like dogs, too. Why? He considers his black Lab, Winston, to be family. If the dog and the guy don’t get along, the deal is off. Except there’s one man who’s caught Cameron’s attention…and he’s got a Collie.

Josh McDowell didn’t start visiting the dog park to find a date. He wanted to exercise his Collie, Dolly. His dog, though, has other ideas. Once she meets Winston, she’s smitten. His owner is rather easy on the eyes, too. Josh gathers his nerve and makes the first move. Cameron is his kind of man—sweet, quiet, smart and a dog person. Their connection is strong, but with Josh’s insecurities and Cameron’s fear of commitment, will it last?

Amazon

I wanted to absolutely love this one. I mean look at that cover! Two dogs feature prominently, more so than the two men. And those two dogs fell in love instantly, similar to their owners.

I liked the book, and I felt horrible at the treatment that Cameron dealt with from his ex, even when the ex decided he had to have Cameron back. I did find though that, in my opinion, I thought it took him too long to stand up to that horrible man. If he felt so strongly about his dog, and his ex clearly hated the dog, it seemed like there should have never been a moment when he vacillated. It should have been over at that moment.

That being said, Cameron and Josh seemed to come together very well. They connected through their love of their dogs, and from there the connection between the two grew stronger, despite their differing job issues.

In the end, their dogs brought them together, and there was no doubt that all four ended up with their HEAs. I’m looking forward to the next in the series of this book.

Viper (Fallen Angel Book 2) by Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine: Release Day Review

March 25, 2019 by Denise

Scorching chemistry. Red-hot lyrics. An irresistible bad boy.
Halo, the new lead singer for Fallen Angel, never stood a chance against Viper, the legendary lead guitarist for the band.

From the moment Halo set foot in Viper’s lair, the match was lit, threatening to consume the two men with the heat of their desire. But when their casual flings begins to morph into more, will it leave the entire band in flames?

After all, it may have been Halo who fell from grace, but it’s only a matter of time before Viper falls for an angel.

VIPER is the second book of the Fallen Angel Series and should be read following HALO. Halo and Viper’s story concludes in book three, ANGEL.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

Let me tell ya something. These two, Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine, have probably the hottest covers in all the land. Whether they are co-authoring or not. You know what else they can do? Write a really hot book. *fans self*

Book one we got to know almost everyone (save for the elusive Trent who abandoned the group). The formula was a bit too much like “Try”, but I still enjoyed it. Let’s be honest. Hot rock stars? Ok, yes please.

This next installment definitely did not remind me of the “Try” series. And I absolutely love that they are releasing the books so close together. I have a shit memory, so fast releases help me.

This book picks up right where we left off. They guys are in Florida to make an album. But now Halo absolutely cannot resist Viper. Halo thinks they are being sly, but they aren’t. Viper really doesn’t care if the other guys know or not. But he doesn’t want it in public because he wants Halo to be huge. And he feels like if he comes out as in a relationship- let alone with a man- he will alienate the fans.

But they are in their cozy compound in Florida where everything is perfect. Until they head back to New York.

Learning to navigate the real world again, Halo starting to realize what being famous entails. Back to people who know them and hiding their sexy fun times. And they are super sexy fun times.

We get a little more info on Trent, but not a ton. And I am not going to spoil anything.

And the ending. OMG THE ENDING!!!!!!!! Seriously. Such a great ending which doesn’t leave you hanging, but still leaves you wanting more.

So yes, BRING ON ANGEL!

I liked the idea of this story, and felt like Brady might have been the sweetest guy on earth. Organization was clearly his game, and he took no prisoners. 🙂 Jordan meanwhile seemed like a man who was very much internalized into his business. Spent all his time dealing with all ends of the business and kept it running well.

When Brady does get sick, and Jordan starts seeing him as more than his PA, that is where I became a bit confused. There was so much that Jordan wanted to change with Brady. He bought him a new wardrobe, etc, and in my eyes took away some of Brady’s personality. Although Brady slightly objected, I felt like perhaps he should have been a little more forceful in his objections.

Either way, I did like their connection, and even the way they brought themselves full circle once they returned to work. It was an easy camaraderie, and Brady knew everything about Jordan. Jordan meanwhile still had much to learn. By that point, though, he had learned he didn’t’ want to live without Brady in or out of the office.

Merry-Go-Round by L.M. Somerton: New Release Review

March 25, 2019 by Denise

Book two in the Fairground Attractions series

Even the brightest places have shadows.

Stevie is sweet and shy—the only hint of an independent spirit comes from his lilac hair. For years he’s harboured a crush on his best friend, Adam, who is everything Stevie isn’t. The problem? When it comes to love, Adam is a bit slow on the uptake.

On top of that, Stevie fears the escaped killer known as Harlequin is targeting his friends, and clings to his role managing the merry-go-round for some semblance of normality. But someone is watching from shadows even the summer sun can’t penetrate.

Realising that life can be all too short, Adam takes steps to ensure that Stevie will be his. All his protective instincts kick in when Stevie attracts some unwanted—and very dangerous—attention, but he can’t take care of him alone. The group of friends needs to band together because the bright lights and whirling horses of the merry-go-round won’t be enough to keep Stevie alive. Some killers are far too good at hiding in plain sight.

Amazon

This novella series is about a group of college men who are spending their summer working at a local theme park. So far one has met his love while also finding a dead body, while two of them finally find their HEA together, while dealing with more death and bad guys.

I’m enjoying this series. Has some elements of BDSM, although very little on screen, some suspense, and a group of men who have all touched each other’s lives.  My best guess as a reader is the the finality of Harlequin will come at the end of the series, but I’m going to love these guys the entire way there.

They are hopeful, funny, and give each other tons of grief over the smallest things. I laughed a bit during this one as Stevie, the shy one finally gets the man he has always wanted.

I can’t wait to see what is next for these guys.

I know it’s well past Christmas but I couldn’t help but read this quick short story one night when I was digging through for something different. And a book set in that area during Christmas seemed like the perfect one. 🙂

First the way WE meet these two gentleman had me laughing. They already knew each other (which I always appreciate in short stories), but our introduction to them was slightly unique…and later we find out it was even more unique than we first imagined!

Sam made me laugh, but he also was so caring with Jago. He made sure Jago understand that he wanted him, and he was there for the long haul. Jago wasn’t going anywhere, and Sam was clear that he wasn’t either. They were a very good match together. And since it was the first time they were single at the same time, they took full advantage.

A sweet story, with some fun elements as well. Even though I hadn’t read anything in this series, I was able to follow right along.

CHAPTER 1

How could they have so much stuff?

When Donnie and Ben had moved into the duplex just over six months ago there had been ten boxes, eight of which had been Ben’s. Donnie had had a ruthless clear-out of his and Floyd’s little house, and had thrown away most of his meagre possessions.

Of course, adding a baby—toddler now—to the mix meant a lot more stuff, and it all needed packing up.

Still, fifteen boxes in the bedroom alone seemed excessive.

Ben straightened and wiped his brow. He surveyed the result of three hours’ hard labor. Only a small suitcase remained open, with a couple of changes of clothes for each of them. The living room and kitchen were equally crammed with boxes, though they’d held back packing the crockery so far. The kitchen was chaotic enough with all of their different dietary requirements without having to hunt around for plates to eat from, too.

The new house, a find of Arthur’s just like their condo had been, was less than a mile from the apartment. Ben and Donnie had both come to love Ormewood with its quiet, leafy streets. The small bungalow had two bedrooms, which they’d badly need. The smaller one was going to be the nursery, with a second bed for Laura. Unlike the condo, the house wasn’t freshly decorated, but the road it stood on was quiet, and they would have a large yard at the front and back, where flower and vegetable beds had already been in good use.

The front door banged shut. “Evening,” Ben called, but there was no response. He put down the parcel tape and scissors and went into the hall.

Donnie stood by the front door gripping the doorknob hard, his head lowered. His breath came in painful-sounding gasps. Zac, who stood by Donnie’s side, looked around. The confusion on his round face cleared as he spotted Ben. “Pa!” He came running, and Ben picked him up. Fear churned his gut at the sight of Donnie’s bent-over form.

Hoisting Zac onto his hip, he asked, “What’s the matter?” In response, Donnie lifted his head and Ben’s question was answered at once. His face was white as chalk. “Whoa,” Ben exclaimed. “You look terrible.”

“Some kids got the stomach flu, and… shit…” With a low moan, Donnie staggered past Ben into the bathroom and shut the door.

“Dadda?” Zac asked tentatively.

Ben stroked his back. “I think Dadda’s not feeling so good. We gotta be nice, all right?”

Zac nodded, looking scared.

Ben hugged him. “It’s gonna be okay,” he whispered into the little boy’s dark curls, as much to reassure himself as Zac.

Donnie reemerged a long few minutes later, seemingly on the verge of passing out, his face ashen and sweaty. Ben hurriedly stood Zac on his feet and took Donnie by the elbow, his own heart hammering. “C’mere.” Donnie leaned his head against Ben’s neck, breaths ragged, his forehead burning. They stood still for a moment until Donnie began to shiver. “Let’s get you horizontal,” Ben murmured. Zac trailed them into the bedroom.

Ben struggled getting Donnie out of his shoes and pants. He had sweated through his shirt so Ben got a fresh T-shirt from the open suitcase. Great timing. As if moving wasn’t stressful enough already.

“Here, stretch out.” Ben pulled the blankets back. Donnie curled up, shuddering, his hands pressed hard to his stomach.

“You sure it’s just flu?” Ben asked, dread twisting his insides.

Donnie buried his face in the pillow. “What else?” His voice was tense and despondent.

“Could be your pancreas again?” Ben swallowed, dismayed at the thought. He sat on the edge of the bed and put a hand on Donnie’s neck, which was clammy and hot.

“Daycare kids’re sick,” Donnie insisted. “I just picked up their virus¾”

“Even if that’s true,” Ben interrupted. “We need to get you looked at, have your T-cells checked¾” He broke off as Donnie groaned and struggled to sit up.

Ben helped him to his feet, but Donnie pulled away. “Can manage.”

To distract himself and give Donnie some space, Ben went into the kitchen to locate a basin in one of the boxes. He was on his way back to the bedroom when Donnie reappeared, looking even whiter than before. Ben took him into his arms and Donnie clung on hard.

“Feeling any better?”

“Not really.” The hands went back to Donnie’s belly. Fear gripped Ben like an icy fist, but he said nothing.

Zac had somehow managed to climb into their bed. He looked at them with a serious expression on his little round face. “Dadda,” he said and stretched his arms out.

Donnie stopped dead. “He’ll get sick, Ben.”

“If he’s going to catch this it’s already happened,” Ben said. “But I’ll call Arthur, ask him if he can take Zac until you’re over the worst. I can’t look after you both, not with the move, as well.”

Donnie’s face creased. “I don’t like it when he’s away,” he whispered. “But you’re right. I’m real sorry, Ben.”

“It’s okay.” Ben hugged him and kissed his temple. “For now, give bub a cuddle. You need it.” He helped Donnie back into bed, and Donnie pulled Zac close, curling around him with a whimper. Ben watched them a moment. Donnie shivered and shifted around. With a sigh, Ben went to find his phone which he last remembered seeing in the chaotic living room.

When he returned to the bedroom Donnie had fallen asleep. Zac was stroking his face, but when he saw Ben, he started to wriggle free. Ben extracted him with care. Donnie sighed and turned over without waking. Ben put Zac in his cot, then, phone pressed to his ear, he started to pack a bag for Zac’s visit to Arthur.

Mel was born in Germany, where she spent the first twenty-six years of her life (with a one-year stint in Los Angeles). She has always been fascinated by cultures and human interaction, and got a Masters in Social Anthropology. After finishing university she moved to London, where she has now lived for ten years.

If you were to ask her parents what Mel enjoyed the most since the age of six, they would undoubtedly say “Reading!” She would take fifteen books on a three-week beach holiday, and then read all her mom’s books once she’d devoured her own midway through week two.

Back home in her mom’s attic there’s a box full of journals with stories Mel wrote when she was in her early teens. None of the stories are finished, or any good. She has told herself bedtime stories as far back as she can remember.

In her day job, Mel works as PA and office manager. No other city is quite like London, and Mel loves her city. The hustle and bustle still amaze and thrill her even after all these years. When not reading, writing or going to the theater, Mel spends her time with her long-time boyfriend, discussing science or poking fun at each other.

Shadows Never Lie (Shadow Duet Book 1) by Lark TaylorMy review:Ok, going into this knowing that there is a book 2.....And I just have to start by saying I really appreciated that they are identical twins who don't get along. So often they are BFF and twin telepathy and all that. And it does happen. But not always.I have to admit I was sucked in from the start. Especially since the first chapter was present day and then chapter two starts the back story. Just from chapter 1 I wasn't expecting their younger years to be as they were. And I really wanted to hate Dominick. But once more information about his life came to light AND how he started treating Ryan, I had a soft spot for him. Max (Ryan's twin) on the other hand, can go scratch. It will take a lot for him to redeem himself in book 2 if that even happens.I kind of saw the cliffhanger coming. I still wasn't prepared. Oh my heart just broke. And I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! Good thing book 2 comes out in 2 weeks...4 pieces of eye candy ... See MoreSee Less

Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
Avalanche (Ricochet Ridge) by Jillian Wray My reviewI really liked these two characters and how they aren't exactly what you expected.First, yes they are step brothers. But they are 4 years apart AND Stone left when he was 18. You can extrapolate that there wasn't even a crush between these two guys until this book. Hero worship, yes. Romantic crush, nah.Stone, kind of a hot shot on the mountain because he is part of the blasting crew who set charges to trigger avalanches when no one is on the mountain. He is obviously good looking and popular, but the outside doesn't necessarily match the inside. And Hanlon, babied his whole life because he has a mild case of cerebral palsy, but he also grew into a independent college senior who has a gym body, is confident, out and proud. The quiet kid grew into a confident adult and the confident kid turned into a quiet adult. There was animosity between the step brothers for different reasons. But once they pushed past that and they started feeling things, it got interesting.Again, role reversal of the stereotypical characters. And that made it so fun.It sucked that they basically had to stay in the closet. Because of family and because of work. But we all know that doesn't last forever. And I totally understand their parents feeling the way they do. But like good parents, they found acceptance in their hearts. The CP representation was done really well. Showed that there are different levels of CP and even when it isn't overtly obvious, there's still a lot that a person has to deal with.AND I learned more about avalanches.4 pieces of eye candy ...
