July 10, 2017 by Denise

Carlisle police officer Dwayne knows what Robin is doing the moment he lays eyes on the young man at Bronco’s club. But he doesn’t know that, like him, Robin also comes from a family who cast him out for being gay, or that he’s still lugging around the pain of that rejection. Robin leaves the club, and soon after Dwayne decides to as well—and is close by when things between Robin and his client turn violent.

When Dwayne finds out Robin is the victim of a scam that lost him his apartment, he can’t leave Robin to fend for himself on the streets. Despite Dwayne’s offer of help and even opening up his home, it’s hard for Robin to trust anything good. The friendship between them grows, and just as the two men start warming up to each other, Robin’s sister passes away, naming Robin to care for her son. Worse yet, their pasts creep back in to tear down the family and sense of belonging both of them long for.

Will their fledgling romance dissipate like fog in the sun before it has a chance to burn bright?

First, I love this series, so when I saw it was up for review… I had to have it!

In this one, we see all the guys from previous books, especially Red, as he’s Dewayne’s partner. I love that. Dewayne, is kind of new to Carlisle and is new to the police force there. After leaving his home town for unknown reasons (we find out eventually), he’s relieved that his sexuality won’t be a problem like it was before. Tired of going home to an empty apartment, he goes to the next town to a gay club to check things out… that’s where he meets Robin…

He and Robin didn’t have a great first meeting, Robin was doing what he needed to do to get by and it got him into a little bit of trouble… not because Dewayne is a cop, but because people just can’t be trusted…luckily, Dewayne was there to help him out… helping him out led to feeding him and that led to taking him home for a place to crash when things went from bad to worse for Robin. Of course, they were attracted to each other, but Dewayne giving him a place to stay and Robin not having anything in his life that didn’t come with a price (good or bad, but mostly bad), they were hesitant to act on anything.

I love the dynamic between these two, they’re such different people at different times in their lives, but yet they have so much in common and it’s heartbreaking. Parents that turn their back on their children is a touchy subject to me…not because it’s happened to me, personally but because I’m a parent to two boys and I can’t in my life think of a scenario where I”d turn my back on them…not ever. Not if they killed the pope or murdered a small villiage….I gave them life and they give me purpose… how do you turn your back on them for something as ridiculously simple as who they chose to love? I cannot understand. Although I will say, what I suspected the whole time, was kind of true….I did not see the twist, so well done, Mr. Grey!

I loved seeing Robin, despite his shortcomings and confusing time in his life, get a hand up from Terry. He didn’t judge what he learned of Robin during his interview, and that showed how much Terry had grown as a person as well. I mean, if you read their story, you know that that’s true anyway, but it was nice seeing it in deeper levels when you’re invested in each story and knew the kind of person Terry was in the beginning… Not that he was a bad person, he never was.. I loved him, but he was a bit judgemental and more than a little shallow. Red is good for him and I loved seeing them both in this one.

I also loved seeing Donald and Alex… when Robin’s sister passes and he gains custody of his nephew (which is in the blurb, so don’t shun me for giving that away), Donald has really come a long way from where we met him in his book. We also see some turmoil between Red and Terry, but that gets worked out too, in the best way.

I loved seeing Robin grow, he was really, in a bad way in the beginning, but with the help of Dewayne, he really comes into himself and transforms in the most realistic way. I loved that. Nothing seemed forced or hurried… Dewayne was amazing and understanding and patient and helpful… Robin has so many esteem issues that stem from such a crappy upbringing after losing his father and gaining a terrible stepfather so soon…. Then he got kicked out and got taken advantage of and then lost his sister…of course, he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop… it always does!

Sigh… I could go on and on about this series. I really could. It’s another fantastic addition to an already amazing series. I love them all so much for so many different reasons, but this one had me tearing up a couple times and it warmed my heart at other times. I just loved the chemistry between these two guys and the family they set on making together. Like I said, I saw the twist coming, I knew to a point that what I saw coming, was coming… but then it tossed me on my butt and I was like, whaaaaaaat? I love when that happens!

Great story, great storyline, fantastic character development and such amazing story telling. I loved every second, even when I didn’t. If you haven’t, you need to catch up and read the rest of this series… if you have, then don’t pass this one up… you’ll love it!

5 well deserved stars from me.

Setting the Hook by Andrew Grey: Release Day Review and Giveaway

May 13, 2017 by Denise

It could be the catch of a lifetime.

William Westmoreland escapes his unfulfilling Rhode Island existence by traveling to Florida twice a year and chartering Mike Jansen’s fishing boat to take him out on the Gulf. The crystal-blue water and tropical scenery isn’t the only view William enjoys, but he’s never made his move. A vacation romance just isn’t on his horizon.

Mike started his Apalachicola charter fishing service as a way to care for his daughter and mother, putting their safety and security ahead of the needs of his own heart. Denying his attraction becomes harder with each of William’s visits.

William and Mike’s latest fishing excursion starts with a beautiful day, but a hurricane’s erratic course changes everything, stranding William. As the wind and rain rage outside, the passion the two men have been trying to resist for years crashes over them. In the storm’s wake, it leaves both men yearning to prolong what they have found. But real life pulls William back to his obligations. Can they find a way to reduce the distance between them and discover a place where their souls can meet? The journey will require rough sailing, but the bright future at the end might be worth the choppy seas.

Andrew Grey‘s books are a must-read in the m/m romance genre. He simply knows how to write, and gives the reader stories about everyday people living everyday lives. These aren’t necessarily model beautiful men, rich billionaires whose only problems are which company to buy up. No, these are real men with problems that every person who reads will be able to empathize with.

I loved that William and Mike were attracted to each other from the start, but for five years, only saw each other twice a year for a day outing of fishing. A long distance romance of wishes and dreams. Neither acknowledged the attraction, until Mother Nature decided to give them a little shove together. Once they had the push, they jumped in with both feet, willing to see what would come of a few days together, then later two weeks together.

I do love when Andrew sets up a ready-made family. The loner William, who felt as if no one understood him, felt comfortable with all of Mike’s family, not just the man he’d been waiting for. And Andrew always gives us sassy kids, and moms with attitude. (Both Mike and William’s moms showed they weren’t just grandmothers, but women too!)

There were a couple things that played out a little neater than I expected, but it didn’t detract from the story at all. It simply would have given it a little more tension, in my eyes. And Andrew always gives us the happy ending we waited for. 🙂

Andrew, I love your stories! You have a little bit of everything in your arsenal. I’m such a sucker for your stories that I don’t even care what they’re about before I one click them or if I’m lucky, get to ARC them, like I did this one. It was no different. It reminded me of a cross between NR Walkers- Blind Faith series and your Senses series. It was just as sweet and comforting and a little sad but hopeful.

In this one, we have James, who is blind since he was about 10 years old. He has an overbearing mother but the most amazing sister and brother in law, who is raising the most amazing, adorable child, Zach, who loves his Uncle Jimmy. He’s gotten used to life as a visually impaired man and he’s living his life as independently as he can. Having recently lost his longtime service dog, he’s still doing great on his own. Unfortunately, being blind, it’s easier, I would think to be taken advantage of, and he was, thanks to a guy that his mother set him up with a while ago. You’d think he has a hard time trusting again, since the guy was a GRADE A A-HOLE… and he was, y’all, you’ll see for yourself. He makes an appearance in this story a time or two; but not enough to be truly angsty.

Then we have Trevor… I will be the first to admit, I thought Trevor was a giant D bag in the beginning. He was a player, plain a simple. Didn’t “do relationships” and was only good for a one nightery. You know how it goes… He wasn’t mean or jerky, I wouldn’t say that, he’s just hurting from something that we don’t understand until way, way, way later in the book… Almost til the end, so don’t expect to understand him straight way. It’s easy to fall for him though, he finds himself unexpectedly attracted to James. He’s patient and kind; he understands James’ limitations and strives to pull him out of his comfort zone, but in a respectable way, and James has such a good time with Trevor. He see’s James for the person that he is, inside and doesn’t see his disability as a hindrance at all. Yes, things are different and they might take a special kind of care, but it isn’t a bad thing. It’s not a burden….and because of the ex, and a lot of times his mother… that’s exactly what James felt like. My heart really broke for him, at times.

Through getting to know one another, after meeting at a club, Trevor was amazing with James, and James really took to Trevor. It was like the trust was immediate and he became smitten rather quickly. Trevor deserved it though. There was once or twice I doubted, but I shouldn’t have. He was so good for James. I also loved Trevors friend Brent… I hope he finds someone and we get to see it. I also felt for his other friend, Dean, but I’m not so sure of him. I felt sorry for him for a minute but then didn’t care much for him towards the end. At least he had his dad, Brent and a slew of loyal workers there for him. Even if one of them did screw him over, pretty good. More than once and often.

The whole story wasn’t angsty, which I love and we get a lot of closure by the end. I won’t go into detail and ruin it for everyone, but I will tell you that you’ll fall in love with these characters and you’ll love them so much for how much they love each other. I feel like they needed each other and came for each other at the exact time that they shoulda. I adored every part of it and the ending was as sweet and comforting as I could’ve hoped. Don’t pass this one up. It’s so heartwarming and sweet. Just like all of Andrew Grey reads. Read it! You won’t be sorry!

I am a romance junkie and a member of Romance Writers of America.  So each year I judge one of their contests and last year I judged a secret baby book.  I discovered something new.  To top it off a friend told me that she particularly loves secret baby books, so when she challenged me to come up with one, I rose to the challenge and Poppy’s Secret is the result.  Yes, my demented imagination came up with a scenario for an MM secret baby book.  It was fun to write and I hope it’s as much fun to read!!!!

Heather's Review

Poppy’s Secret by Andrew Grey is one of my first reads from the Dreamspun Desires line from Dreamspinner. Typically, I’m more of a fan of series, especially from authors like Andrew Grey. This is because I love the idea of getting to know a community of characters and see glimpses of previous couples in future books. If I was to say anything against Poppy’s Secret, it would be that I wish I’d get to see them again in the future, because I loved Edge and Pat.

This is a second chance story in every sense of the term. Pat and Edge were in love and planning a future. Then, Edge felt the weight of adult life weighing down on him and ran. Now, he’s back and hoping he can prove to Pat that he knows exactly how badly he screwed up. The problem is, life didn’t stop for Pat when Edge left and Pat moved forward with their plans to start a family even though he was doing it on his own.

As happens often in Andrew Grey’s books, little Miss Emma was as much of a main character as the men. The eight year old is now the center of Pat’s universe, and before he can let Edge in, he needs to know he’s not going to run again, hurting not only Pat, but also Emma. And he’s worried that when his secret is revealed, Edge will run.

I can’t tell you too much more than that, but I will say this story ended with a great case of the happy feels.

Definitely a great book to pick up when you need something with only a touch of angst and a great story.

excerpt

“I saw him yesterday,” Edge told his sister, Terry, when she called while he was waiting for his first coffee of the day. “I was at one of the clubs to have a good time. He was on his way out, and he literally ran into me.”

“Let me guess. He welcomed you back with open arms and said that he forgave you for being the biggest jackass of all time, and that now that you were back, the two of you could pick up right where things left off.” Terry could be the biggest smartass on the planet. “I told you then that you were being a jerk.”

“You were sixteen. Everyone was a jerk then.”

“Maybe,” Terry conceded. “But I was still right, and you know it. That job that started this whole thing was just an excuse because you were scared of all the things Pat wanted, and by the way, he has and you don’t. I still see him every now and then.”

“Does he talk to you?” Edge asked.

“Of course he does. I’m not the douche who left him. That was you. I’m just your sister, and that daughter of his is beautiful and wonderfully smart. I used to see them more than I do now that they moved.” She was taunting him—it was another of her skills.

“How come you know all this and I don’t?”

“Maybe because I still live in Harrisburg and you moved to Boston nine years ago and never looked back until everything went to shit and you decided to come home.”

Edge wanted to growl at her, but he couldn’t because she was right, no matter how much attitude she threw his way. “Can you knock it off for a few seconds at least?”

“Fine, but what fun is that? You still have feelings for the guy you ran out on years ago, probably when he needed you the most. Edge, I gotta tell you that if you did that to me, I’d probably tell you to fuck off too. I mean, it has been nine years, as I said. He has a life that doesn’t include you. What did you expect, that he’d spent the entire time you were gone wishing he had you back? Come on. You’re an interesting guy, but nobody waits around for someone that long.”

“Okay,” Edge sighed. “But it was good seeing him again. He looks good, and—”

“So you’re the one still carrying the torch. That’s priceless and pathetic. You were the guy who left, remember?” A cry rose behind her. “Look, I gotta go. Margie needs to be changed and fed, and I think you need to get over yourself and realize that the past is that past and that it’s probably best if it stays there. I know things fell apart, but you have a good job here, and you’re building a life again. You just need to realize that your life isn’t going to include Pat.”

That was harder than Edge thought it would be. He’d had nine years, and even after all the things he’d done and the places he’d been for his art, none of them had ever measured up to what he’d had with Pat. Edge knew he’d screwed up in a major way, though it had taken him months to realize it, and by then he knew it was way too damn late. “I know, but seeing him brought back all that stuff I thought I’d buried.”

“Nothing is ever buried for long. It always surfaces, and when it does you have to deal with it. Buried emotions are like those coffins that floated up in New Orleans during Katrina.”

“Thanks for that image. Now I’m going to see floating coffins.” He paused and closed his eyes as the images floated through his mind. “I’ll let you go.” His sister would need to get the kids ready for daycare.

denise review

Andrew Grey is one of the most prolific writers in the m/m romance genre, and you would think that after so many books, and how often a new one is published, his writing would be “same thing, different character names”. Yet, that has never happened with his books, and certainly did not happen with Can’t Live Without You.

This story is a second chance romance, which is not something I’ve seen much of in Andrew’s writing. These men were in love when they were teenagers, and through circumstances that teenagers sometimes are unable to deal with or fully comprehend, Justin left Pennsylvania and George to move to California. He meets a friend who helps him stabilize himself, and assists him as Justin becomes one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

His father is terminally ill, and George, as a home health nurse has been caring for him, as Justin returns to put the past to rest, despite his seething anger with his father. George and his mother take Justin into their home, and help him to deal with all the feelings that go along with not having closure with a dead family member.

What I enjoyed just as much as the second chance love that shone through for Justin and George, was the second chance that Justin took to relieve the anger and emotions that came from not being there when his own mother passed away, and having no more than two words from his father as he died. It wasn’t easy, it didn’t wrap up Justin’s feelings as he went through the funeral, or as he walked through his childhood home. He was angry, hurt and didn’t know what to do with all those feelings. Then on top of all that, he fell in love again with a man who lives across the country, when his own world is in Hollywood.

Of course, because it is an Andrew Grey book, it gets its HEA, and it wasn’t a simple ribbon wrapped box. These men still had to deal with heartache, and missing each other long distance. But finding the compromise that would allow them to love each other, their family, chosen and blood related took them time and a little intervention.

paula review
I really enjoyed this second chance romance. Malcolm was beautiful. He was so serious and kind of stiff. Hans was the perfect counterpart to him. He loosened him up a little, but also accepted him and his introverted ways. Malcolm had such a challenge to pull himself out of his grief. Hans was so great with Malcolm. I really like how understanding and accepting Hans was towards Malcolm’s feeling. He dealt with Malcolm insecurities very well. These were very real characters. The story was told very realistically. I felt for these characters.

It’s going to ruin me for the rest of my life, for any other person I ever sleep with after this.I’m going to leave most of my heart and part of my soul on this bedroom floor, and I won’t be coming back for it.Leo stares up at me under his long, dark lashes. He’s the same man I’ve always seen: shattered, exhausted, shaped by injury and grief. The man who doesn’t believe he deserves a second happily ever after. But he’s also something else now.Not quite mine, but I’m allowing myself to say he is, only for this moment.Lifting higher onto my knees, my hands creep along his thighs and I begin to tug the robe open. He doesn’t stop me. He watches with fevered eyes, one turned in slightly, but still so fucking focused on the way I’m touching him.I’m terrified something I say or do is going to break this spell and he’s going to banish me from this space, so I take my time drawing the tie on his robe open so I can see all of him.And every inch is fucking gorgeous.#emlindsey #mmromance The Author Agency ... ✨It’s cover reveal day for HUNT ME by @authoremlindsey & @coraroseauthor releasing August 7th!#PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/388EGa Why you need to #ONECLICK this book…🔥Strangers to Lovers🔥Stalking as a Love Language🔥Deaf Drag Queen🔥Panty Wearing🔥Autistic character rep🔥Coffins as a special interest🔥Cemetery flower bouquets🔥Only One Bed🔥Forced Proximity🔥MM RomanceDoing Deaf drag isn’t supposed to come with threats to my life, damn it. I’ve had a stalker before, and apparently—even after involving my friend from the FBI—he’s decided to come back and make my life hell. But this time, however, a slightly terrifying stranger shows up to play hero.He knocked my stalker on his ass and left me with blood smears on my jaw and a kiss on my lips so devastating, it threatened to rearrange my whole life. And then he disappeared into the shadows. But just when I think I’ll never see him again, I find him haunting my steps everywhere I turn. It’s not long before I realize hunting me might be his love language, and god help me, I think I’m into it. Especially when each time he catches me, he leaves me breathless and wanting more.My stalker is still around, but being with Archie is worth whatever the unwelcome blast from my past wants to throw at me.After all, having a boyfriend with a thing for knives, coffins, and funeral flowers is a great way to protect myself, and if his obsession and love for me isn’t enough to take my stalker down, my determination to get my happily ever after will.Hunt Me is the first book in the morally grey rom-com series Murder Hearts. It’s a spicy, MM stalker-to-lover romance with forced proximity, coffins as a special interest, an Autistic MC, a Deaf Drag Queen who doesn’t have time for anyone’s BS, stalking as a love language, a set of lovable murder brothers, an unhinged cat café, and a steamy, swoony, happily ever after.✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up here for this amazing release: bit.ly/HUNTMESIGNUPCover Credit:BreathlessLit#coverreveal #corarose #emlindsey #mmromance The Author Agency ... Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
✨TEASER: THE GEEK AND THE GHOST by Cambria Hebert releasing July 10th!#PreOrderNowa.co/d/07PLBaC9 Why you will love this book…🔥Hero with a villain complex🔥Pocket-sized Geek🔥Over the top possessive🔥MC Rescue Fantasy🔥Banter🔥Chronic illness rep🔥Touch him and die🔥Size difference🔥Dude in distress (suspense)🔥Hurt/Comfort🔥Homeless MC 🔥MM RomanceI’m about thirty seconds from a toe tag and my own freezer at the mortuary when he materializes from the shadows and fights like hell to keep me breathing.I had no idea homeless disasters like me got guardian angels—or that guardian angels punch people and smoke—but suddenly, there he is: a hero dressed all in black who ghosts me so hard I consider calling a medium. But that would be a waste of money I don’t have.I thought I’d never see him again, but just as I’m about to eat a bullet, he appears, using his body to protect mine. I might have swooned—okay, fine, I do but only on the inside—if it weren’t for the fact he thinks bleeding is an adequate apology for implying I’m a prostitute and running off with my heart.Spoiler alert: It’s not.Now the man with a PhD in vanishing, a tattoo that totally offends me, and eyes with their own force of gravity is suddenly stuck to me like glue and being wildly inconvenient about it.And he won’t stop calling me a pipgeek. What even is that?He insists I trust him, but I can’t trust anyone, not even my own body. Unfortunately, when the resident drug lord calls in that favor I foolishly owe, things go from bad to catastrophic with alarming enthusiasm. On the upside, having a villain with a hero complex for a stalker means staying alive will be easy. But not getting hurt again is a whole other story.✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up for this awesome release: bit.ly/TGATGSIGNUP#cambriahebert #mmromance The Author Agency ... Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
✨TEASER: DRIPPED by @charlienwrites releasing July 9th!#PreOrderNowmybook.to/lickittwoWhy you need to #ONECLICK this book…🍦Boss x Employee🍦Hooking Up For Stress Relief🍦“Just For The Summer”🍦Late Night Kitchen Dates🍦Friends To Lovers🍦Oops We Caught Feelings🍦Supportive & Nosy Friends🍦Pet Names🍦Spicy & Sweet🍦MM romanceFulfilling my childhood wish of opening an ice cream shop is meant to be a dream come true, not a stress-inducing nightmare. And it’s not meant to make my friends concerned for my health either. But I’ll be fine! All we have to do is survive the summer and then I’ll be able to breathe again. My employee Owen has a different idea, though. He’s seen me watching him swim every morning, and he knows I think he’s ridiculously hot, so he proposes a simple solution to my stress: a summer-long, no-strings hook-up arrangement. It’s the perfect plan on paper. Except, the longer summer goes on, the more I’m developing feelings for the sunshine swimmer who loves my dream as much as I do. But I can’t tell him that. Because Owen doesn’t plan to stay. And I can’t ask him to. Even if letting him walk away would be the worst decision I’ve ever made. Meet Darcy and Owen in the second book of the Lick It! series, set around an artisan ice cream parlour on the Yorkshire coast. It features a stressed out shop owner and his very laid back employee who’s determined to help his boss relax, a ‘just for the summer’ hook-up, late night kitchen dates, friends to lovers, oops we caught feelings (but we’re not talking about it), supportive and nosy friends, pet names, delicious ice cream, and plenty of sweetness and spice. ✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review this awesome release: bit.ly/drippedsignup#charlienovak #mmromance The Author Agency ...
