Two Chicks Obsessed with Books & Eye Candy

Sharing our love of M/M Romance

Just Say When by Aimee Nicole Walker: New Release Review

January 2, 2023 by Denise

.                                   .
Someone wants Police Chief Emilio Mendoza dead. And if his unknown assailant doesn’t kill him, pining for Sheriff Abraham Beecham just might.

Abe and Lio’s thirty-year journey has taken them from heated rivals to best friends with countless labels and pit stops along the way. Romance is the only avenue left unexplored but not from lack of love or desire.

Abe pushes people away before they can get too close, and Lio doesn’t engage in situations he can’t control. They’ve reached an impasse, and neither are willing to risk their friendship until fate intervenes, forcing them to reassess their priorities.

But when an unhinged enemy targets Lio, will their gamble be too little too late, or will their love truly conquer all?

Just Say When is a standalone romantic suspense novel within the author’s Savannah universe. This book contains mature content and is attended for adults.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited – All Regions

Just Say When is a story that a lot of readers have been waiting for. I was really looking forward to seeing how Chief Mendoza won his man. However, this was one of those cases where the book just didn’t completely work for me, which considering how much I love the author’s Savannah universe, failed to live up to my expectations. In the author’s defense, I have missed the last couple of books in this series, which is why I was counting on the stand-alone portion.

Probably my biggest issue with this story was the feeling of starting the book in the middle, as if the story was already unfolding, and I missed the first several chapters. While we’ve seen these other characters, and their interactions, for a stand-alone, it felt as if they were already in a relationship, which in many ways they were. We learn more about their “issues”, and why Abe is hesitant, but then those issues just seems to disappear, and they finally fall into bed. (Side note, Abe’s issues are addressed further in the last chapter/epilogue.) I wanted more of the feelings, and the connection on the page, versus being told about all of the things that make them the people, and best friends they were into the couple they were becoming.

One of this author’s strengths though is the romantic suspense portion of her books. Although there wasn’t much of it until about the last 30% of the book, she does a good job of building up the suspense, and creating questions as to who the villain is, and their motive. I would have liked a bit different portion of the motive, but understand where it came from, and for me it was just a personal preference. It was well done, and the climax was great in its involvement of so many of the characters.

The side characters, Alyssa, Alex, Ross, and some quick appearances by Rigsby and Locke helped to round out the storyline as well. They all did a good job of creating a deeper storyline, and understanding more about the relationship between all of them. One pet peeve that I have to mention…I counted at least 6 characters whose names began with an A. I wish authors would not do that. Especially with minor characters, it becomes a little difficult to remember who had what name, unless you are reading in one sitting. It can also lead to editing errors (although in this case it did not). I know character names can be an issue, but keep it to 2 or so, if possible, in my opinion.

Anyway, I think if you have read every book in this universe, you are going to love this story, but if you missed a book or two, you might feel left on the outside. For me as a reader it was a misstep, but how much of that is due to missing some of the books, I can’t quite say.

The bicurious cop and his sharp-dressed man…

Detective Christopher “Topher” Carnegie is unlucky in love. He either tries too hard, doesn’t try hard enough, or hasn’t found the right person yet. But recently, he’s started seeing Julian Fine, his sister’s best friend, in a new light. If there’s one thing a fabulous tailor knows, it’s how to take a person’s measure. Julian recognizes a straight man when he sees one, but that doesn’t stop him from falling head over heels for the unattainable man.

Just a few short days and one shared bed…

When a white lie backs Julian into a corner, Topher steps in to save the day. He’s worked plenty of undercover assignments before, but pretending to be Julian’s boyfriend during a family wedding might be his most dangerous mission yet. Julian challenges everything Christopher knows about himself, and soon, reaching for each other feels as natural as breathing. But can their newfound feelings survive the real-world challenges they face? There’s only one way to find out.

I bolted upright. “Are you hurt?”

“Nah,” he said, waving me off. “I just had an incident with the ground tonight, and my shoulder is stiff.”

I scooted back deeper on the couch, spread my legs, and patted my thighs. “Let me see if I can ease some tension for you.”

Christopher gave me a tentative smile and shook his head slightly. “I’m okay.”

“Take him up on his offer if you’re hurting, Toph,” Harper said as she returned her attention to the drama on the TV. “He has magic hands.”

“Words I never want to hear my sister say again,” Christopher said.

I lifted my hands and studied them as if seeing them for the first time. “They look pretty average to me,” I said.

Harper snorted. “Magic. Capital M.”

I waggled my brows at Christopher, then patted my thighs once more. He smiled and shook his head, even as he eased off the couch and scooted over to sit between my feet. Christ, his shoulders were broad. I had to spread a little wider to make room for him.

I looked at my ordinary hands once more. Please don’t fail me now. I gently placed them on Christopher’s shoulders and noted the tension tightening his body. Was it from being so close to me, or was he in more pain than he was letting on? I carefully pushed my fingers into the meaty part of his shoulder. “Tell me where you need me most,” I said, moving my thumbs around to probe the areas.

“Warmer,” he said when I moved lower. “Maybe both hands on my left shoulder since that’s where I hurt most.”

I move my right hand over and used both thumbs to dig into each new knot I discovered.

“Oh!” Christopher said, his entire body stiffening.

I stilled. “Oh or ow?”

“Maybe both,” he said. “I want to pull away and lean into your touch at the same time.”

Harper snorted. “I’m getting grossed out.”

“Yeah,” Christopher said, “and I didn’t like hearing your headboard banging against my wall when you had a visitor on Saturday night.”

Harper’s face flushed red, and she narrowed her eyes. “You were supposed to be on a date.”

Trying to head off a fight, I adjusted my pressure and said, “How’s this?”

Christopher let out the sluttiest moan I’d ever heard. “Holy fuck, that feels good. God, give me more.” I pushed a little deeper into the knot and worked it until the muscle relaxed. “Magic hands, indeed. Not just a capital M. All caps and bold print.”

I leaned closer to his ear. “But not underlined?”

Christopher’s head fell back onto the couch cushion between my legs, and he stared up into my eyes. “Double underline,” he said huskily, then closed his eyes. “Please don’t stop.”

“Seriously, should I go to my room?” Harper asked.

“Yes,” Christopher replied while I said, “No.”

This story was so fun for many reasons. Topher is a detective working with Sawyer Key at the Savannah PD. So it’s a character we know but who is finally getting his story. Because of that, we get SOME Locke and Key interaction, but not a lot. This is not their story.

Another reason is the seamless way Julian’s story, starting with when he moves to Savannah, is told and then there is a 3 year time jump. In a short time we get to know him, his new bff Harper, where they live and most of Harper’s family. Including her brother Topher. Julian flirts with Topher starting at their first meeting. And never stopping. Even though Topher is straight. And his best friend’s brother. But that is just who Julian is. Out, loud, proud and doesn’t hold back. Even though he does curtail his flirting while Christopher is in relationships. Plural. Because they never last.

Instead of various mysteries and cold cases, this book gives us a story about just the two men. I mean, mostly. There’s a wedding and an ex boyfriend and lots of family members. But the main story is Julian and Topher falling in love with each other. Julian realizing that his dream man is really that dreamy as a boyfriend. And Topher realizing that he’s not nearly as straight as he thought.

There was never that “don’t use me as an experiment” thing or “you should try out other guys”. I hate that plot device. No one was out to prove anything because how they felt for each other was obvious. And of course it was obvious to EVERYONE ELSE besides them for a long time.

Savannah to Atlanta and back and Julian does a full circle with Topher right there with him.

It was swoony and sexy and funny and I loved it.

Killer Honeymoon (Sawyer and Royce: Matrimony and Mayhem, Book 3) by Aimee Nicole Walker: Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

July 12, 2022 by Denise

.                                           .
Honeymoon, happily ever after, and…homicide?

Newlyweds, Royce Locke and Sawyer Key, embark on a honeymoon road trip where their biggest threat should be dodging drunk tourists on golf carts. But their arrival on South Bass Island lands them in the middle of a contentious battle between lifelong islanders and a property developer who won’t accept no for an answer. Tempers soar as the barometric pressure drops, signaling a dangerous storm brewing on the horizon and across the street. Minding their own business becomes impossible when a homicide wrecks their vacation and puts Royce and Sawyer in the path of a twisted killer.

Will their honeymoon be two tickets to paradise or a one-way trip to the morgue?

Killer Honeymoon is book three in the Matrimony and Mayhem trilogy, the second story arc for Royce Locke and Sawyer Key. ** New readers should start with the Zero Hour trilogy before reading Matrimony and Mayhem. ** Killer Honeymoon is a continuation of Royce and Sawyer’s happily ever after as they move into the next phase of their lives—professionally and personally. Though some storylines span the trilogy, this book does not end in a cliffhanger. Heat, humor, heart, and homicide abound. You have been warned. 18+

Marriage is Murder (Sawyer and Royce: Matrimony and Mayhem Book 2)

“Where are you going?”

Sawyer whisked his shirt over his head but kept walking. “Now it’s time.”

Royce pushed back from the table so fast his chair crashed to the ground. He caught up to Sawyer before he reached the hallway. Sawyer laughed when Royce pulled him into his arms and ghosted a finger over his lips.

“The only thing more beautiful than seeing your lips curve in a smile just for me is seeing them wrapped around my cock.”

“You charmer,” Sawyer teased, though he was utterly enchanted by his man.

Royce pushed him against the wall and caged Sawyer’s head between his hands. “Less talking, more kissing and sucking.”

Sawyer pushed off the wall, forcing Royce to take a step back. He grabbed his hand and led Royce to the bathroom. Sawyer turned on the water to let it heat up, then focused on stripping his husband bare. He was so eager to touch and suck that he nearly stepped into the shower fully dressed before checking the temperature.

Royce snagged his wrist and dragged him back. “I love that you want me so badly, but maybe you should take your clothes off first.”

Finally, FINALLY…Sawyer and Royce make it down the aisle and are married. But before that, I cried. Yes, literally 2 percent into the book and I was blubbering.

Anyway, luckily the wedding was uneventful as far as catastrophes. Evangeline made everything absolutely perfect.

Off they go on their honeymoon. First to TN and Sawyer’s sister’s cabin. Idk, this seemed like a weird stop for me. SC to TN and from there to MI where Sawyer’s parents have a house on one of the little islands.

Being that I live in a seasonally active vacation area, some of the descriptions were just so spot on. Corporations buying up properties so that they can use them as vacation rentals and slowly pushing the full timers out. It’s sad that it is so real. So when Frank, the permanent resident who lives across the street from Sawyer’s parents place has issues with the barely legal kids renting next door, I sympathized.

The “kids” are nasty too. Just mean and rude and ridiculous. But then there is a nasty storm and when the debris is cleared, several people are missing and others are turning up dead. So OF COURSE Sawyer and Royce stayed out of it. Laughing yet? I know.

Figuring out the murderer wasn’t difficult. Their motivation I didn’t guess and it was pretty cool.

This was mostly a light hearted, schmoopy honeymoon book with a murder mystery that wasn’t difficult to figure out, but that’s fine. It was a nice closure on this chapter of their lives.

Pack tissues.

Marriage is Murder (Sawyer and Royce: Matrimony and Mayhem Book 2) by Aimee Nicole Walker: Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

May 5, 2022 by Denise

Spring is in full bloom, love is in the air, and Cupid has taken deadly aim in Savannah.

Newly engaged, Royce Locke and Sawyer Key are ready to set the date and charge full-steam ahead into their happily ever after, but homicides and unresolved conflicts keep getting in their way. Neither detective has met a case they couldn’t solve, but their latest investigations will push their limits and challenge their faith when the line between friend and foe becomes blurred. And if that weren’t enough, a random encounter with a stranger will trigger a series of events that could either make or break the couple.

Love—often a thriller, sometimes a killer, but always worth the battle.

Marriage is Murder is book two in the Matrimony and Mayhem trilogy, the second story arc for Royce Locke and Sawyer Key.

** New readers should start with the Zero Hour trilogy before reading Matrimony and Mayhem. ** Marriage is Murder is a continuation of Royce and Sawyer’s happily ever after as they move into the next phase of their lives—professionally and personally. Book 1: The Magnolia Murders (Sawyer and Royce: Matrimony and Mayhem Book 1)

Book 3: Killer Honeymoon (Sawyer and Royce: Matrimony and Mayhem Book 3) (out 7/1)

When Royce had pulled up to The Pirate’s House restaurant, he figured he’d seen it all and that nothing could shock him at that point in his career. He’d gone through the usual steps of putting on his PPE, signing in at the scene, and chatting with the responding officers, Jennifer Wang and Sierra Knight, who happened to be two of his favorites. Something in their expressions had tipped Royce off that this crime scene was like no other he’d ever seen. His brows edged toward his hairline as they described arriving on location.

“Shot through the heart with an arrow?” Royce had asked when they’d finished.

Wang nodded. “He landed on the wedding cake.”

“Smashed it to bits,” Knight added. “Vanilla cake with strawberry filling.”

Tara arrived before Royce could say anything further. She greeted the patrol officers and asked them to bring her up to speed. Royce noticed what looked like the top of a hickey peeking out from the collar of her shirt. He knew Tara and Candy had gone out a few times since he’d reintroduced them two months ago, but neither had mentioned the dates to him, and he didn’t push. He really, really wanted to, though. As if sensing Royce’s attention on her, Tara rolled her shoulders and adjusted her shirt before meeting his gaze with a quirked brow.

“Shot through the heart with an arrow?” she asked Royce.

“I had the same reaction. Does that make Cupid our prime suspect?”

“Or someone living out Bon Jovi lyrics,” Tara replied.

More adventures for Locke and Key.

Both are settling into their new normal. Sawyer investigating cold cases and Royce working on current homicides with his new partner until his new program for teens is ready. The last book solved a cold case (and a current murder) so they worked in tandem. This time they are working independent cases. Sawyer is mostly closing a couple of cold cases without a ton of fanfare. But Royce has a murder to solve that has some interesting twists and turns to it.

And throughout it all Sawyer’s mother is planning their wedding. Spoiler alert: we get a wedding date!

The book was a fun read, the story uncomplicated with a lot of different loose ends being tied up. And while solving the murder turned out to be pretty interesting, it wasn’t a huge page turner. Like I said, fun. But not really gripping.

I think the next book might be the last and even though I really want them to get their wedding, family and happily ever after, I would love to sink my teeth into a juicy mystery.

Must read for fans of the series.

The Magnolia Murders (Sawyer and Royce: Matrimony and Mayhem Book 1) by Aimee Nicole Walker: New Release Review

March 8, 2022 by Denise

Everything old is new again in love and murder.

Work together, live together, and play together is the name of the game for Royce Locke and Sawyer Key. But one of those things changes when Chief Mendoza taps Sawyer to lead the newly formed cold case unit. His first task: solve the Magnolia Murders that spanned three decades and suddenly stopped in 2000.

Chaos ensues when a fourth Magnolia Queen contender is murdered during a preliminary round. With the pageant’s one hundredth anniversary looming, the pressure is on to produce results. Royce and Sawyer, along with their new partners, have to team up to solve the Magnolia Murders—old and new.

As the investigation continues, a surprise visitor and an unexpected phone call force the men to face painful things from their pasts. The future Royce and Sawyer dream of is within their grasp, but first, they’ll need to uproot the seeds of discontent they’ve buried deep.

The Magnolia Murders is the first book in the Matrimony and Mayhem trilogy, the second story arc for Royce Locke and Sawyer Key. ** New readers should start with the Zero Hour trilogy before reading Matrimony and Mayhem. ** The Magnolia Murders is a continuation of Royce and Sawyer’s happily ever after as they move into the next phase of their lives—professionally and personally. We are back in Savannah with the power couple Locke and Key. We had a break from the guys being the main characters but now they are back, snarkier than ever and still under the control of their cat Bones. Gotta love it.

I admit I am not usually a blurb reader when it is an author I enjoy. So I was a little surprised that the crime fighting duo were taking different paths. Key’s new path starts immediately- he will be heading the newly formed cold case unit and his first assignment is to try to solve three beauty queen murders from 1984, 1996 and 2000. Dubbed the Magnolia Murders, Sawyer is all in.

And then another beauty queen is murdered. The MO is different though. This wasn’t at the finals, other details are different. So before his snark gets rusty, Locke and Key are chasing down leads together again.

They do a good job of trying to keep the cold case and new murder separate as they know they are different murderers. It was a fun whodunit ride. You think it is this person, then that person. The mystery was woven well and I was surprised at the reveal. Looking back at it all though, it made sense. And I love who ultimately helped them figure it all out. Or at least planted the seed to help them figure it all out.

Being that Sawyer and Royce were an established couple I wasn’t expecting so much…schmoopy. It got to be a little much for me but it didn’t detract from the overall storyline at all. Honestly, I will put up with all the schmoopy to read about their interactions with Sir Bonesington.

There were some nice cameos in there, Royce’s family, Felix, Sawyer’s old partner (is that really going the way it looks like it is going?) and the chief’s wife- baker of the perfect bear claw.

There was a lot set up for future books that I look forward to.

Shadows Never Lie (Shadow Duet Book 1) by Lark TaylorMy review:Ok, going into this knowing that there is a book 2.....And I just have to start by saying I really appreciated that they are identical twins who don't get along. So often they are BFF and twin telepathy and all that. And it does happen. But not always.I have to admit I was sucked in from the start. Especially since the first chapter was present day and then chapter two starts the back story. Just from chapter 1 I wasn't expecting their younger years to be as they were. And I really wanted to hate Dominick. But once more information about his life came to light AND how he started treating Ryan, I had a soft spot for him. Max (Ryan's twin) on the other hand, can go scratch. It will take a lot for him to redeem himself in book 2 if that even happens.I kind of saw the cliffhanger coming. I still wasn't prepared. Oh my heart just broke. And I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! Good thing book 2 comes out in 2 weeks...4 pieces of eye candy ... See MoreSee Less

Everything I secretly want. But then, Dominic suddenly sees me and issues an offer I can’t refuse. A challenge, actually. One he never expects me to follow through on.With anyone else, I wouldn’t have considered it. But I’ll be damned before I let Dominic get the better of me.It has me sinking to my knees. Literally.A decision that changes everything.Dominic pulls me out of the shadows, and I never want to go back. But it’s not the shadows I need to be afraid of.No, it’s the path that leads somewhere far darker than I could ever have imagined. Avalanche (Ricochet Ridge) by Jillian Wray My reviewI really liked these two characters and how they aren't exactly what you expected.First, yes they are step brothers. But they are 4 years apart AND Stone left when he was 18. You can extrapolate that there wasn't even a crush between these two guys until this book. Hero worship, yes. Romantic crush, nah.Stone, kind of a hot shot on the mountain because he is part of the blasting crew who set charges to trigger avalanches when no one is on the mountain. He is obviously good looking and popular, but the outside doesn't necessarily match the inside. And Hanlon, babied his whole life because he has a mild case of cerebral palsy, but he also grew into a independent college senior who has a gym body, is confident, out and proud. The quiet kid grew into a confident adult and the confident kid turned into a quiet adult. There was animosity between the step brothers for different reasons. But once they pushed past that and they started feeling things, it got interesting.Again, role reversal of the stereotypical characters. And that made it so fun.It sucked that they basically had to stay in the closet. Because of family and because of work. But we all know that doesn't last forever. And I totally understand their parents feeling the way they do. But like good parents, they found acceptance in their hearts. The CP representation was done really well. Showed that there are different levels of CP and even when it isn't overtly obvious, there's still a lot that a person has to deal with.AND I learned more about avalanches.4 pieces of eye candy ...
