Hard To Let Go by Jaclyn Quinn: Release Day Review

February 19, 2018 by Denise

Owen Richards lives a quiet life in his small hometown of Haven’s Cove. He has a rewarding life consisting of three very supportive—not to mention feisty—women, and a successful bakery that he owns and absolutely loves. Yet, Owen can’t seem to shake this emptiness inside or the intense feeling that something is missing. A sudden encounter with a man from his past, one he despises, turns his entire world upside down. When Owen finds himself attracted to that sexy man, he questions everything, including his sanity. After all, only an incredibly disturbed person would find that he can’t stop thinking about his high school bully.

Brody Walker never expected to return to Haven’s Cove. He’s made a life for himself in Boston where he can truly be the person he was always meant to be. But an unexpected call has Brody facing all the demons he’d left behind so long ago. Now, he’s faced with not only a difficult goodbye, but one long overdue apology to a man who is no longer that lanky kid from high school. The challenge is to convince the guy he’s changed—and also prove he’s worth taking a chance on.

When passions ignite, truths are exposed, changing beliefs these men have held on to for years. Faced with the knowledge that things aren’t always what they seem, will they choose to hold on to the incredible thing they’ve found…or is it easier to give in to the fear and let go?

I don’t do love triangles so I was a little bit worried about this one in the beginning. See, Owen and his boyfriend Jonah were best friends that turned into more, Jonah was there for Owen when he needed him the most and he’d always have love for him…. Unfortunately, as of lately, they both knew that things weren’t that way with them anymore. They had all the love in the world for each other, but they weren’t in love with each other. I respected how maturely they handed everything and was glad that there wasn’t a bad guy in the situation; they were both very likeable characters.

Now… on his way to work one morning, Owen runs into an old high school bully, Brody. Brody and his friends weren’t just bullies, they were BULLIES… especially the ring leader, Chuck, and it’s heartbreaking what they put Owen through…. What’s even worse though, is the heartbreaking, terrible life that Brody was hiding from. I couldn’t stomach the way his father treated him and I’m really bummed that he didn’t get the karmic justice that he deserved. Somethin akin to ripping his flesh off the bones and keeping him alive for days to be tortured…. Too much? Meh, doubtful….

Anyway, although Owen is angry at seeing Brody and very mistrusting of him, he didn’t know that Jonah had already hired him to some remodeling work at Owen’s house. It starts off terribly, but, once Owen knows why Brody is back in town and finds out the way he suffered alongside Owen all those years ago, just in a different way… things change for the pair.

I love how jealous both men get in regards to the other man while they try to hide their feelings for each other. I love Owen’s family and Brody’s best friend Gabe, I really hope he gets a story with Nate, as well as Jonah gets his happy with someone perfect. I love that Owen cared so much about Brody and was there with him every step of the way when tragedy strikes and Brody needed him.

These two had the best chemistry, and not even just during sexy times….this author done an awesome job expressing such deep feelings of confusion, lust, anger, regret, guilt, sadness and overall love. This is my first by this author, but it for sure won’t be my last!!

4 heartbreaking and hopeful stars from me.

Family Ties by Poppy Dennison: New Release Review and Giveaway

February 13, 2018 by Denise

Every family has a story to tell…

Blake Bartlett needs a do-over, so he’s going back home to Havendale, Florida, with his three-year-old daughter in tow. The perfect life he built is in ruins and he’s determined to create a new one. The Bartletts are fixtures in the small town of Havendale, and Blake’s extended family welcome him back with open arms. He’s settling in and getting back in his family’s good graces, when he meets Lincoln Coleman. Suddenly, he’s starting to want things he shouldn’t, and their relationship is beginning to heat up.

Linc may have the reputation for being a one-night stand kind of guy, but the rumors aren’t quite right. When he meets Blake and his daughter, he imagines family life and settling down for the first time. There’s only one problem: Blake has taken on a leadership role in the Bartlett Construction business and now Linc works for the man he’s falling in love with.

Blake’s well-intentioned family may have them tied up in knots, but only they can untangle their heart strings…

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

What an incredibly cute story!

Anyone who knows me or my reviews, knows that I am a sucker for a single dad. In this one, we have Blake and his daughter Caroline. They’re moving back to Florida to be closer to his gigantic family after losing his husband (who he was separated from), and Caroline’s other Daddy, Michael. Not telling his family about the separation was hard, but he found it easier to avoid them than disappointing them; but now he’s going home to face the music and lean on his family for a while.

Blake’s family is…..amazing. He has the biggest extended family, filled with cousin’s who are more like brothers and sisters and, Aunt’s and Uncle’s, and of course, his parents and actual siblings. There are a lot of them, but every one of them are there for Blake and head over heels in love with Caroline… and how could you not be, she’s so cute!

Going to work for his Uncle, doing office work at his construction company….that’s where he meets Linc. Linc is gorgeous and ripped and charming and good friends with the family, so when he asks him out, of course he goes. We’re kind of lead to believe that Linc is a playboy, but we never see any of that. He seems smitten with Blake from the beginning.

Because they work together and Linc is so close to the family… they belatedly remember all this and think maybe it’ll cause problems. In all honesty, I thought all that was ridiculous and unneeded.   I loved the way Linc was with Caroline and how much he cared about her and Blake. He might’ve been apprehensive and went about things the wrong way, but, he showed Blake what he meant to him, I felt like. I wanted to smack Blake a time or two. Luckily, his family talked him around, and alls well that ends well…. But it was an unnecessary bump in the road I felt like.

Overall though, it was such a cute read and you really can’t go wrong with big families and cute babies. I’d love to read more of this family, and especially Blake, Linc and Caroline!!

4 pieces of eye candy from me!

The Good Fight by Andrew Grey: TBT Quick Review

February 8, 2018 by Denise

*A new feature we are bringing to TCO, TBT, Throwback Thursday Reviews. A chance to review that book you’ve been “meaning to read” for a long time! So check out what some of the “older” books have to offer!*

Jerry Lincoln has a problem: his Sioux Falls IT consulting business has more work than one man can handle. Luckily, that means he can hire some help. Jerry just hopes his new employee, John Black Raven, ends up being more helpful than distracting—but John’s deep eyes and long hair are very distracting.

John came to town for an education and a chance at a life he couldn’t have on the reservation, but what’s important to him now is getting a job and keeping it. Six months ago, his sister died, and now her children are in foster care. Despite having the law on his side, John can’t get custody—can’t even see his niece and nephew.

As Jerry and John grow closer, John discovers he doesn’t have to struggle alone. Jerry helps him win visitation rights and provides much-needed support. Yet their victories aren’t without setbacks. Child Services is tangled up with money, politics, and red tape, and Native American children are their bread and butter. But John and Jerry are determined to fight the good fight and to win—in more ways than one.

Loving this cover! I feel like I’ve had this one on my TBR list forever, because I love this author and hello….hot Native American’s? Yes please! So, here we have Jerry, a consulter for some tech stuff with coding and all that stuff I know nothing about so I can’t tell you the actual name for it…. But, with more work than he could handle on his own, with a suggestion and help from a good friend, he decided to hire someone that could help him out. He found two prospects, both were qualified, and things happen in which he could hire them both…. Only problem, one of them was John Black Raven, and he was extremely attracted to him. To the point of distraction.

Fortunately, it worked out and while working together and getting to know one another, Jerry learns of a family matter that John needs help with. His niece and nephew has been taken by child services when their mother died and because of their heritage, they aren’t likely to be given to John, because they earn the state money being in care. I’m not sure how true this is, or if things like that do indeed happen, but I was really hoping for more karmic justice with the terrible state worker who actually lied and deceived to keep John from his family.  When his sister passed, shed wanted John to have the kids…. The social worker was awful though and she fought him every step of the way. That’s where Jerry came in.

Jerry wasn’t having it with the social worker and heled John as much as he could. How could you not fall for someone like that…. That’s exactly what John did, and Jerry, seeing how much he loved his niece and nephew and how badly he wanted them to be with him… it was impossible not to fall for him too!

Overall, it was just a really cute read with a really sweet ending… and I’m looking forward to reading the next one!

4 pieces of eye candy for me.

January 30, 2018 by Denise

Caleb White has been a lot of places and made a lot of decisions he isn’t proud of. He’s ready to settle down and figure out who he really is. Where better to do that than Last Chance, the home he was ripped away from at sixteen? A fresh start is in order, but he has no idea how the hell to do that when he’s not even sure what he wants in the first place.

Ryan Daily is a pro at hiding his insecurities. He’s never fit in and has spent most of his life knowing there’s something missing. Just when he thought he’d found it, his whole world fell apart and he lost everything.

Then comes a sleepless night in a twenty-four-hour café, where Caleb and Ryan forge a connection full of laughs, junk food, and whispered secrets. In the middle of a budding friendship, they see the blossoming of desire neither of them expected. Ryan has kept his heart protected after having it shattered, and Caleb—no stranger to attraction—finds what he has with Ryan is on a whole new level from anything he’s experienced before. In a world of black and white, they bring each other color.

“It’s weird…getting touched by you this way…by someone this way. I feel it in my bones. Like this sweet, relentless sensation I’ve been denied so long.”

Jesus, he really fucking wanted to kiss Ryan. His lips tingled with the need, but Caleb knew it wasn’t the time or place.

When Ryan’s eyes opened, he saw a moment of panic there. “I’m not trying to get heavy. I know what this is, and frankly, that’s all I can handle. We’re friends. For whatever reason, we’ve connected with each other and I’m attracted to you. I know it ends there, and truthfully, I don’t know how far it’ll even go sexually.”

Was that a warning, or was Ryan just being honest? Caleb didn’t know, and he wasn’t sure how he felt about it either way. It wasn’t as if he was looking for anything serious either, but Ryan’s need to put it out there did make discomfort slide down his spine. If those were the rules, he guessed he should know about them.

Caleb dropped his hand and nodded. “bGotcha. Sounds like we’re on the same page. I appreciate your honesty.” He could keep this at just making Ryan feel good. Fuck, he wanted to keep touching him until he lost his fucking head, and when they were done, they’d be done.

“We should probably go inside.”

“You think? I’m not sure…”

Ryan rolled his eyes. “So damn funny.”

“Glad you think so.”

When they got out of the car, they were both smiling. *

Ahhhh…yet another Riley Hart book I loved. This is book 2 in the series, but seeing as how I missed book 1 (who??) you definitely don’t have to read book 1 to enjoy book 2.

Caleb returns to Last Chance- the town he grew up in until he was 16. That was when his parents forced them to move without notice or word to his best friend Shane. Shane, the boy he had been friends with forever and who he started experimenting with. And then they got caught.

After a quick reconnection with Shane, Caleb is out of sorts. He still feels like things are unresolved with Shane, he has no job- and doesn’t need one- and he is living in a big house by himself. He finds himself at the town’s all night diner where he runs into Ryan. They quickly bond over cars and late night snacks. And even though Caleb is out, he thinks Ryan is straight. So instead of a flirtatious romance, Caleb shoots for friendship.

Their friendship is, at times, awkward. But they forge ahead, both needing the connection. Caleb never crosses the line though. Lots of fantasies and longing looks- but hands off. Until they start talking one night and it comes out (haha!) that Ryan just doesn’t feel sexual attraction to anyone. Caleb gives him a name, a label, of demisexual. And it is like a light bulb went off.

Their friendship turns a corner. It grows into experimentation, flirting and a bit of romance. But they are both holding back secrets that need to be told.

I really love that more colors of the rainbow are being represented in books. Acknowledging that there are more than gay/straight/bi people out there. And this was beautifully done. Seeing Ryan blossom into the man he was meant to be, accepting affection and enjoying sex. He is still scared of what the world will think, but that isn’t surprising. Identifying as straight his whole life and now being with a man can rock the boat.

Caleb and Ryan have their ups and downs. And even though some of their misunderstandings are silly- they always end up talking to each other and working things out. Being that they started out as friends, they have that solid base to work from.

Ms Hart does an excellent job of explaining demisexual. Not only to us, but to Ryan. It was really well done, sensitive and loving. Of course I am going to recommend this book!

California native, Matt is in for a culture shock when he moves from the big city of San Francisco into a tiny backwoods town in Georgia. In a place where everybody knows you AND your Mama .it takes a bit of getting used to…especially how backwoods some of them seem. There were a couple, *who I suspect, and hope will come out in the next book, and I hope its Santiago that blows him wide out in the open!!* But, anyway…I did not like the use of the word Fag and nobody calling anyone out on it, but that was really the only problem I had with the whole book…

So, now that Matt was in town, he decided one night to take a drive, too hot to stay in his apartment, he didn’t plan on going a couple towns away, or having a random hookup with the only guy hes felt attracted to in while…Having the guy run out on him afterwards wasn’t something he was used to. Still…they had a connection and were left wanting more for them…Or I was at least!

Wouldn’t ya know it…Small world and all that, the hookup must’ve had the same idea, because a week later, with his partner, he runs into the guy he hadn’t been able to keep off his mind. Only one problem…he had a fiancé! A woman fiancé…

But, of course, not everything is as it seems.. not for any of them. Matt wasn’t out at work and who could blame him, especially with that A hole, Jay…. I wasn’t fond of him and I never warmed up to him…tho I do suspect he’s the one Santiago was talking about…Fingers crossed…Santiago is Matt’s old partner from the force in San Fran…but, still very much apart of his life.

Now, things get a little muddy because everyone, including Johns family thinks hes been with his bestie Chloe for the last decade and since neither of them dispel the rumors, neither of them say otherwise. Its just easier for everyone…Until something happens to Chloe and everyone seems to blame John…

Well, not everyone…I was kind of upset by that too…How everyone had known him his entire life and yet, some didn’t believe his innocence or nonability to do something like that. He loved Chloe, she was his best friend….more than that really, they were all each other had. Sure, they both had family, but not ones that knew them heart and soul like they did about each other. I loved their relationship and I was gutted by what happened and how and who did it…Cuz I gotta be honest, who I swore done it the whole time was nowhere near accurate… I love that. It kept me on my toes, that’s for sure! It was a page turner for sure!

One thing though, Matt never lost faith in John and eventually, John gave in and stopped running from Matt…Well, and everything else really as well. There were a few unanswered questions that I would’ve liked the answer to, but I’m really hoping for another story after this one and maybe that’ll shed some light on a few things.

Other than that though, it was a fantastic, suspenseful story and I really, really enjoyed it!

Hurricane Reese by R.L. Merrill: Exclusive Guest Post, Release Day Review and Giveaway

January 29, 2018 by Denise

The life of Tony-winning musician Reese Matheson resembles a natural disaster, and caregiver Jude De La Torre is caught in the eye of the storm. But can the love of two opposites survive caring for an ornery octogenarian with wayward balls and a meddling family insistent upon tradition?

Fresh off the successful London run of his musical, the last thing Reese expects when he comes home is a house surrounded by paparazzi and his girlfriend throwing his stuff into the pool. All he wants to do is spend time with his beloved grandfather and musical mentor who suffers from Alzheimer’s. Reese knows he doesn’t have much time left before the elder Matheson forgets who he is. In classic “Hurricane Reese” form, he moves into the cottage by the sea and displaces Jude, the intriguing caregiver he hired two years before. When Grandpa proves too much for Reese to handle on his own, Jude comes to his rescue, taming Grandpa… and the Hurricane as well. Soon all Reese can think about is how to get Jude out of his scrubs and into his bed—permanently. Will Hurricane Reese destroy everything in his path, or will this odd couple learn to harmonize together?

Hurricane Reese is the result of many pieces coming together to create a funny and heartfelt romance. Those pieces include a beloved grandfather with Alzheimer’s disease, interracial dating in the LGBTQ community, musical theater, the Rat Pack days, and a new relationship with not only a power differential, but an age and cultural gap that threatens to halt any progress Reese and Jude make. Throw in an ex hell-bent on making Reese’s private life public, homelessness, a disappearing best friend, and a troubled younger brother and you have the natural disaster that is Hurricane Reese. Readers who enjoyed my self-published works like the Teacher trilogy and The Rock Season will find this new book a natural progression and new readers to my books will hopefully fall in love with Reese and Jude and the crazy families they bring along for the ride.

I haven’t read anything by R.L. Merrill before, but I knew when I read the description that I wanted to. And in a way I was not sorry, but more like I paid the price to read it. For the last six months, I’ve been dealing with something similar to what Reese was dealing with. My father had a couple of strokes, and has been left with some lingering effects that six months later we are still trying to manage, and cope with. So, reading about the deterioration of Grandpa and how Reese and Jude dealt with it, had me in tears more than once. I’ve felt some of the pain that Reese felt when my father didn’t recognize me. Or when he said things to me that were hurtful, because it was his disease talking and not him. So, I wasn’t sorry I read it, but my gosh, there were so many flashes of pain there, that it tells me that she hit me a little bit hard in the feels.

The story was well planned and thought out. The characters all written with such detail in their backstory, it really helped to understand things like why Jude struggled with coming out. The opposite side, you could see why Reese really didn’t give a fig about who knew what. There were pieces in the story that I certainly wasn’t expecting, but certainly made sense when you figure that stories like this don’t happen in a vacuum. As your characters are living their lives, so too are the other characters in the story living their own.

There were some areas that seemed a bit rushed, but I think that had more to do with the number of side stories rather than not wanting to hit those areas at all. It didn’t detract from the story, it just made me want just a little more length to some of the scenes where they are acknowledging and addressing their feelings.

In the end, I was happy to read this, and find a good way to address what has been a dark cloud looming over our family for a while. Reminding me that the world does continue to turn, and love continues to flourish, even during dark days was a great way to look at it overall.

Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less

✨TEASER: LICKED by @charlienwrites releasing May 12th!#PreOrderNowmybook.to/lickitoneWhy you need to #ONECLICK this book…🍦Very Nerdy Meet Cute 🍦Low Angst🍦Slow Burn🍦Lingerie🍦First Times🍦Blowjobs in Beach Huts🍦Supportive & Nosy Friends🍦Sweetness & Spice🍦“Let Me Help You” 🍦MM RomanceLick It Like A Good BoyIt’s not often you meet gorgeous gothic men at wargaming tournaments. So, of course I tripped over my tongue instead of asking for his number. And despite my friends’ numerous offers to help find him online, we’re too busy opening Lick It!, our new ice cream shop, to spare time for my non-existent love life. But when Jonathan walks through the door on a sunny Friday afternoon, I can’t help but feel like it’s fate. He’s shy, sweet, and we immediately click. Jonathan doesn’t have much experience with relationships, so I’m determined to give him the attention he deserves, even if it means I’m pulled in two directions. With summer heating up and the shop getting hectic, spending time together is getting harder and harder. I don’t know how to balance the long hours and being a good boyfriend, but I know I have to figure it out. Because meeting Jonathan is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. ✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review this awesome release: bit.ly/lickedsignup#charlienovak #mmromance #kindleunlimited The Author Agency ...
