June 2, 2022 by Denise

.                    .

Months after saving their flamboyant theatre friend from disaster, Dannel Ortea and Osian Garey are back with a thrilling murder investigation in the third London Podcast Mystery series novel.

Dannel and Osian’s breakfast double date rapidly devolves into a murder mystery when a dead body is found in their solicitor friend’s car. Wayne is taken for questioning by police. He was last seen arguing with the deceased.

When Wayne’s tie is identified as the murder weapon, it’s hard to refute the growing evidence stacked against him.

Convinced of their friend’s innocence, Dannel and Osian throw themselves into the investigation. When Wayne’s boyfriend, Roland, finds himself suspended from the police, they realise powerful people are involved in the murder.

With a philandering crown court judge, two disgruntled wives, and an angry client as suspects, the clock is ticking for them to find the killer before Wayne winds up arrested—or dead.

“We’re here.” Osian nudged him out of his thoughts. “Not sure the Uber driver wants to idle forever.”

“Sorry.” Dannel muttered an apology to the driver and got out of the car. He leaned his forehead against Osian’s shoulder after the vehicle had driven away. “Maybe we should’ve stopped for coffee.”

“Poor lad.” Osian reached up to gently massage Dannel’s neck. “It could always be worse.”

“How?”

“Chelsea could’ve already won.”

“Arse.” Dannel went to push him away when flashing lights caught his attention. “Ossie.”

“Hmm?” Osian followed his gaze to the numerous police vehicles blocking off a section of the car park. “Someone’s died.”

“Checked your crystal ball?”

“Don’t be daft.” Osian gestured to a group off to one side near the entrance to the building. They walked closer, trying to see what was happening. “Haider’s over there. Why else would they call him in, since he mostly handles homicides?”

“Rolly.” Dannel spotted his brother speaking with Detective Inspector Haider Khan. Roland was waving his hands about quite animatedly. “He’s not happy.”

“Inside voice,” Osian murmured. “Let’s not draw the attention of the nice constables and detectives just yet.”

“Look.” Dannel elbowed Osian in the side, nodding his head toward a familiar figure seated in the back of one of the police vehicles. “Not good.”

“Wayne locked up in the back is more than not good.” He caught Dannel by the arm, guiding him forward. “Let’s see if Haider will tell us anything.”

“Wayne’s car.”

They’d moved close enough to easily see the vehicle cordoned off with caution tape. Several detectives were inspecting the interior while others, who Dannel recognised from the coroner’s office, lifted a body out of the boot onto a stretcher. He had a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach.

“Danny.” Roland drew their attention, jogging over. He gripped Dannel’s arms tightly as if he’d fall over without the hold. “They won’t listen to me.”

Gone was his confident and strong brother. Dannel awkwardly hugged Roland. He couldn’t recall ever seeing him so affected.

Dannel didn’t quite know how to help his brother. He couldn’t tell if Roland was angry or sad; deciphering emotions didn’t come easily to him. “Who’s not listening to you about what?”

“DI Khan. Any of them.” Roland shook his head, stepping back and standing up straight. “They’ve taken Wayne in for questioning because they found Barnaby’s body in his boot.”

“I’d honestly hoped we’d run out of dead bodies to find.” Dannel kept a hand on his brother’s shoulder.

“Maybe third time’s the charm?” Osian suggested.

“We’ve discovered more than three bodies.”

Another fun (can that be a word for it?) cozy murder mystery with Ossie and Dannel and the rest of the crew. Poor long suffering DI Haider, although he is great at pretending to not care, but he does.

I love that these guys are not supposed to get involved, but really can’t help themselves. They have people they care about, and are not willing to let them be railroaded, so they just poke around until they find what they need, usually when it’s too late and someone is in danger. It’s just fun, enjoyable to read.

The relationship between Osian and Dannel is perfect. They do not feel the need to be glued to each other’s sides. And Osian knows when Dannel needs time on his own, and not only respects that, but doesn’t allow anyone else to disrespect that. Meanwhile, Dannel knows that Osian will take care of those things that Dannel just doesn’t have the capacity to deal with. He doesn’t question it, he just knows that Osian will cover it, and that kind of love and trust shows that not only are they an established couple, but one that has known each other for their entire lives. The short crayon story by Dannel’s father really showed how integral they’ve always been in each other’s lives.

I won’t give any spoilers on this, other than to say that the entire group gets involved in this one…and who knew about Ian??? 🙂 …Another really good story, and I can see how this series just blooms in different directions but still can focus on two such different MC’s but with such a loving and companionable relationship.

You will definitely want to read this if you’ve read the first two books.

May 13, 2022 by Denise

The truth hurts. But in the end, honesty wins. Or does it?

Warren Prescott loves a challenge. He knows how to play the game and adapts when necessary to succeed in his cutthroat world. Tired of pining for a man he’s wanted for months, Warren intends to seal the deal. Until that man throws him an endearing curveball…

Be honest.

Gian Benedetti doesn’t play games. Success has cost him the personal connections he craves, and he doubts he’ll take another chance on a relationship. Until the attractive, younger man with the brazen personality and confidence stirs his interest.

Except…someone else is playing games.
And threatening everything Gian has worked hard to achieve.

Warren won’t rest until he uncovers the new player and gets his forever with Gian.

But they’ll soon face a hard truth—
Honesty may be what brings them together…
Or it could be the one thing that tears them apart.

Honestly Yours is an age-gap standalone romance. It features a snarky younger man with a giant crush on a good-hearted, affectionate, bisexual older man. Expect some banter, a little mystery, a few twists, a dash of angst, curious parents, animal trivia, and a whole lot of love…and hugs (so many hugs).

Honestly (see what I did there?), it took me a chapter or two to suck me in. On the surface, both Gian and Warren seemed kind of…boring. But as you quickly get to know them, they are anything but.

Both men are so driven and by completely opposite things. One of them comes from nothing, one of them from money. One is pretty well known in the building/construction world, the other stays in the background.

They are as much opposites as they are similar. They navigate their differences while building a relationship that is so organic. These men were meant to be together.

Gian (and his parents) open hearts help Warren acknowledge and begin to heal from his pain and trauma. And while it seems very one sided that Gian is always there for Warren, always forgiving with arms wide open- Gian NEEDS to be able to be that person to someone. He has so much to give and just needed the right person to give it to.

There’s a bit of mystery in the plot from a couple of different directions. And while there is some angst, there is never that big break up to only get back together. Been there, done that, breaking up over silly conflicts is high school stuff. The maturity level is nice to see.

There are definitely bits of levity that are welcome, but not out of context. There were also tears, including mine.

Good story, great characters, all the feels. And a fun Easter egg that made me smile.

Forever, Con Amor (For Him, Book 4) by A.M. Johnson: Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt, New Release Review, and Giveaway

May 12, 2022 by Denise

Chance,

I never in a million years thought I would want a guy who smells like a tree and probably hugs them on the daily, but alas, you’ve somehow snuck your sexy, khaki-covered ass into my life. It doesn’t help that we’re stuck living in this apartment together for God knows how long, but I can’t stop thinking about that kiss. I know I said it was one and done, and maybe that’s the smart thing to do since I’m not convinced of your emotional availability. Maybe I’m a masochist. Or, maybe I might kind of like you. I said what I said.

No regrets, Marcos~

***

Marcos,

Your ability to simultaneously compliment and insult me is probably one of my favorite things about you. I think it’s part of your charm. Does that make me a masochist as well? I definitely like to torture myself. The night I kissed you, I knew it had the potential to push you away, but I couldn’t stop myself from wanting you. I still can’t. You can flirt and bully me all you like. I’m not going anywhere. I’ve finally found my home, and it’s here. And just in case you need me to be more specific, I like you too.

Forever, con amor…

Chance~

For Him, Book 4

God, he tasted all warm and minty and something perfectly him. His beard burned my skin, something I hoped would linger long after this kiss ended. I scratched my nails through the coarse hair, gripping his chin, his jaw, anything to get him closer. His large hands snuck under the hem of my shirt, and the heat of his palm enveloped my waist. I was fragile in his hold, delicate in a way I’d always wanted, breakable, and I wanted him to break me. A low, rough sound rumbled in his chest as his hands slid along my rib cage. I was surrounded by him, by the scent of clay and sandalwood and rain, and as I pulled my fingers through his hair, he groaned, tugging my hips forward, dragging me from the countertop until I was in his arms. He held me like I weighed nothing, our mouths melded together in a scorching war of teeth and lips, and walked me toward the living room, dinner somewhere distant in the background of my memory.

Panting, he broke the kiss long enough to utter one word. “Couch.”

I smiled against his mouth before I bit his bottom lip. “You sound like a caveman.”

He hummed, his tongue pushing into my mouth, taking control of the kiss as he sat us both onto the sofa. I adjusted my legs, straddling him, the kiss more frantic as I rocked against him. I planted my knees against the cushion, leaning back, I took a moment to breathe. Chance brushed the back of his fingers along my cheek, his eyes on my mouth, and swept a curl from my forehead as I stared back at him.

“These are my favorite,” he said, drawing the tip of his finger along the bridge of my nose.

“What?”

“Your freckles.” His touch was reverent. My stomach clenched at the sincerity of his tone. The room overly warm all of a sudden. “You cover them when you wear makeup, but I think they’re beautiful.” The blue color of his eyes danced with shadows as the flames of the candles flickered on the coffee table. “You’re beautiful.” The force of his gaze was too much. No one had ever looked at me like this, with such raw candor.

This is book 4 and while it can be read as a stand alone (I didn’t read the other three), the backstories of some of the other characters intrigued me. So if I have time I might go back.

Chance is the guy who puts duty above all, especially himself and his relationships. But he finally has a job that keeps him in one place, as the director of an LGBT nonprofit.

Marcos is finally himself. Kicked out at 17 for being gay, in the Air Force at 18, he is once again a civilian wanting to be a clothing designer. He isn’t afraid to express himself with clothes, heels or make up either. Basically the opposite of Chance. Like, complete opposites.

The snark Marcos uses toward Chance “tee hugging hippie”, etc is both cute and an obvious way of Marcos trying to keep Chance at a distance. Because those two have sparks. So when Marcos is suddenly in need of a place to live, Chance offers up his second bedroom. It almost kills Marcos to accept but he does.

They had a great back and forth kind of snarky, but also flirty thing going on for a while. ALL of their friends saw the sparks. ALL of the kids at the house saw the sparks. But it takes them a while to get there. And it’s worth it.

And as much as Marcos makes fun of Chance in his t shirts and cargo shorts, Chance is very free with the compliments to Marcos. Telling him he is beautiful. Loves him with make up but also without when his freckles show. Just swoony.

Chance always had a sense of duty which sent him all over the world, but he is really a romantic relationship guy. He just needed how to put himself and his partner, if not first, then second only behind the kids they help.

Fun, sexy, snarky…definite recommend from me.

Embrace Me (Love in the Pacific Northwest Book 2) by Beck Grey: Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

May 10, 2022 by Denise

Tadhg: After a nasty breakup with my manipulative ex, I returned home to Seattle to lick my wounds. I’m done with relationships. From now on I’m focusing on my career.

There are just a few issues with that.

1. It’s not that easy for a Deaf man to succeed in a Hearing world, even with the right degree and experience.

2. Quinn MacDougall. He’s my co-worker. He’s also incredibly talented, driven, and distractingly handsome.

3. He’s hearing. And that’s the biggest problem of all. How can someone who isn’t Deaf ever truly understand and accept me?

Embrace Me is a 95,000-word contemporary MM romance about language barriers, loving but demanding families, crappy bosses, and sexy guys in speedos. It contains no cheating, and a guaranteed Happily Ever After.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

Goodreads

I glance back at Tadhg to find him watching me curiously. I drain my beer and jump up. ‘Need another. You want one?’

He finishes his bottle and stands. ‘I’ll come with you.’

Oh. Okay. That’s. Fine? Sure. It’s fine. We’re just two people who work together, getting a beer. Together. As co-workers. I spin on my heels and hurry into the kitchen, with Tadhg trailing behind me. I toss my empty bottle into the recycle bin and pull two fresh beers out of the fridge. When I spin around, Tadhg is so close I have to lean back so I don’t bump into him. “Oh!” His beautiful blue eyes look into mine and it sucks all the air out of the room. I stand there like an idiot holding a beer in each hand, panting as if I’ve just run a mile flat out.

He gently pulls one bottle from my hand and carefully opens it, his eyes never leaving mine. I hadn’t even noticed he’d picked up an opener. He hands the opened beer back and takes the second one, repeating the process just as easily, like he does this solely by touch all the time. It’s kinda hot.

We stand there, so close I can feel warmth rolling off his body, and he smells so damned good I want to press my face into his neck and inhale lungfuls of him. His gaze drops to my mouth and then snaps back up to meet my eyes. And oh god, he’s going to kiss me. He leans forward and I move closer, unable to fight his pull.

This was my first book by Beck Grey, but it won’t be my last. And although this is book 2, it is easily a stand alone.

First, big props to the author for not only deaf representation, but Deaf representation. That isn’t seen as often- at least not in books.

This book does a great job of combining Deaf culture with hearing people. How difficult it can be, how isolating. But Tadhg is lucky in that he meets Quinn in a coffee shop when he steps in to try to help. And then finding out that he works at the same architectural firm Tadgh is starting at that day.

Quinn works on his rusty ASL with his roommate and other friends who speak it. Good thing as they are put together on a project. Another employee, Tom, is also put on the project as the landscape architect. On his own, Tom starts learning ASL (a little too quickly to be true, but still).

The beginning of the book had a lot of descriptions of various ASL signs. To me, that is hard to visualize. Signs that use two hands with various motions, etc. Luckily that mostly stopped as I felt like it was taking me out of the story instead of pulling me in.

I also loved that Tadgh was just fine with being Deaf. He didn’t wish he could hear, wish he could speak, wish his life were easier. It was just part of who he was. Even when he was starting a new job he only had an interpreter the first day and then at the end for a big presentation.

The entirety, pretty much, of this book is Tadgh, Quinn and Tom working on one project. But they were picked by the one owner who generally doesn’t do that kind of work (green, eco friendly, low footprint) and the other owner who’s passion is green design was never heard from. It was odd since their difference was pointed out.

ANYWAY

Quinn’s family is big, loud and very loving. And while they welcome Tadgh with open arms, the communication issue is what finally drove the conflict with he and Tadgh. And that conflict kept them apart “on a break” for a bit. I hate when they get in a fight and then just make up the next day. After some stubbornness on Tadgh’s part, they actually hashed out their issues and problems.

Besides a couple of minor missteps, I really did enjoy this book. I really loved that Tadgh was never the victim, never acted like a victim.

Oh So Oscar (Forever Love Book 3) by Charlie Novak: Release Blitz, Excerpt and Release Day Review

May 6, 2022 by Denise

What happens when a prickly travel journalist falls for his fake boyfriend?

Oscar Moore has two problems. One: He’s accidentally managed to convince his boss, the legendary editor of The Traveller, that he has a boyfriend. And two: he now has to persuade photographer and casual acquaintance, Ilias Verrati, to play along for a week-long couple’s retreat in Hawaii.

Ilias is full of sass and sunshine, but his constant flirting grates on Oscar. Unfortunately, unless Oscar wants to confess and risk his job, he has to keep up the ruse. He can manage a week, and if he can pull this off then editorial glory awaits.

Oscar and Ilias both have their own reasons for avoiding relationships—even if they desperately want one—and their work makes finding love even more difficult, but maybe a fake relationship is just what they need to give them a nudge in the right direction.

Under the Hawaiian sun, Oscar discovers there’s more to Ilias than meets the eye. But before Ilias will risk his heart, Oscar will have to find a way to open it.

Oh So Oscar is a 78,000-word contemporary MM romance featuring fake dating, luxurious hotel rooms, star gazing, and delicious food. It also contains discussions of grief, including the past loss of a parent, and the past loss of a partner.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

Across the horizon, the sun turned the sky into an unearthly spectacle of colour and fire. I’d watched sunsets before, hundreds of them, but this one took my breath away in a whole new way.

I slotted my camera together at speed, lifting its bulk to my eye as I attempted to capture the majesty before me. I knew that any photo I took was never going to do the sight justice, but I had to try.

Beside me, Oscar let out a slow breath. I lowered the camera for a moment, turning my head to see his dark eyes fixed on the flaming clouds that danced across the sky.

“Wow,” he said softly. “It’s beautiful.”

“Yeah,” I said, never taking my eyes off him. “It is.”

He turned his head and I felt my face heat as I suddenly pretended to be very interested in my camera, praying that he hadn’t noticed me staring at him. This was just supposed to be fake. I wasn’t supposed to be developing any kind of feelings for Oscar.

Oscar. The oft talked about but rarely seen brother. Because he is a travel writer and lives in London, he isn’t around the family as much as all of the other siblings. This time the focus is on him as the series moves out of Lincoln and the surrounding area.

Another thing that sets Oscar apart from his siblings is that he is demisexual. Yes, gay, but also demi. Hard to deal with when you are a travel writer and can be away for days and weeks at a time. So it didn’t even cross his mind when pitching LGBT+ inclusive destinations that to review them, he should be going as half of a couple. So when put on the spot he throws out the name of a gay travel photographer he has met a few times. Ya, a few times. Not even someone he would call a friend.

But Ilias is up for the adventure, if for nothing than to get a vacation in Hawaii and some exposure in a famous publication. Going with Oscar is a definite plus, even if he is grumpy.

But when they are together in Hawaii Oscar opens up more. And Ilias is a perfect gentlemen. With a little light teasing. Once Ilias knows that Oscar is demisexual, he takes that seriously. And they also agree to date each other.

In the cold light of day- in London- things are awkward again. The vacation rose colored glasses are off. But Oscar’s editor has another assignment. Fifteen boutique hotels all across England, and one in Scotland. For him and his boyfriend.

And it is during that several week 15 stay assignment that they REALLY get to know each other. They aren’t scheduled every minute of the day with resort amenities. Besides staying overnight and having one meal at each place, they are free to do whatever they’d like. And Ilias opens up as well.

This is a slow slow burn due to they whole demisexual thing, but let me tell you. WORTH IT! I thought Finn was hot. Oscar, once he feels desire for someone, let’s himself be free. Even when he realized he was ready for more, what he whispered to Ilias over a table nearly lit my kindle on fire.

Damn.

We not only get to revisit all of our other favorite characters, we also get a cute Easter Egg. I love when authors do that.

And again, a great epilogue.

Definitely a must read. The subject of demisexuality is treated with care without making it feel odd. Or that the person who was demi was odd. Nice representation.

Broken Things (Lost & Found book 4) by Barbara Elsborg: Release Day Review

April 26, 2022 by Denise

An ancient book of faerie magic. A renegade who will stop at nothing to possess it. And the two boys who stand in his way.

When fifteen-year-old Tar, part vampire, part something else, helps his father break into a remote house, he doesn’t care about the book his father is looking for. What he does care about is the little locked-up faerie kid. Merrick is alone, vulnerable and deaf.

The break in goes wrong, but Tar refuses to leave the eight-year-old even though it means facing his father’s fury. Events spiral from bad, to worse, to out of control: the book disappears, and Tar and Merrick are wrenched apart.

The boys grow into men, one living in the light and one in darkness, yet neither has forgotten the other. As powerful forces rise, the search for the missing book gains momentum, and Tar and Merrick’s paths collide once more.

Merrick is the key to the missing book and Tar is faced with a near impossible task: to keep the man he cares for safe, and do everything he can to stop the book and its secrets from falling into the wrong hands. And maybe, just maybe, save the world as we know it.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

If you have read the previous three and are fans of this series, you know you want to know about the mysterious Tar. The guy in charge of PR, the guy who won’t say what he is, although many have guessed vampire. But he isn’t just vampire. And he is more than the stoic, stand off-ish guy that not many like to be around.

The book starts when Tar is 15, so we get a lot of his backstory and what made him the man he is today. A mother who disappeared when he was young, a conman for a father, a deaf 8 year old boy and a magic book that too many people want to get their hands on.

Then book then jumps to present day. We already know from previous books that Tar is the head of Paranormal Relations, kind of a paranormal police. That is secret because most people have no idea that paranormals exist. We also catch up with that 8 year old boy, who now wears cochlear implants and is a traveling doctor.

Even when they were kids and only knew each other for a few days, you could tell that their souls were connected. The way Tar took care of Merrick, defending him, was quite literally willing to put his life on the line for this 8 year old he never met before. And Merrick just implicitly trusted Tar and looked up to him.

So when their paths cross again in London twenty some odd years later, it seems like kismet. But Tar isn’t who Merrick remembers. He is a broken man who doesn’t trust anyone and can’t stand to be touched. And even though Merrick didn’t have an ideal life, he is just the kind of positive person that can’t help but be positive. Even though he has been running and looking over his shoulder since that fateful day in the forest.

The story brings back old enemies looking for the magical book. Tar and Merrick are trying to get to the bottom of it, using what little magic Merrick has and the resources Tar has. We also see Tar and Merrick as adults falling in love with each other. Tar, the man who is never happy, always grumpy, often scary turns into a bit of a marshmallow with Merrick. There’s a learning curve, though, for the man who doesn’t let people get close, doesn’t touch unless he has to, doesn’t share his life. But Merrick integrates himself like a stray kitten that you don’t want but it keeps showing up on your doorstep so you feed it until you finally break and let him in.

This was by far my favorite of the series. I don’t know if it was because of the change in Tar, or that so many previous main characters are involved in the story or because the magic was just wonderful. And by magic, I mean really faerie magic. It was a beautiful little world hidden inside… well, you’ll see.

You can read this as a stand alone easily, but the others are very good reads as well.

4 pieces of eye candy

Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the South of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.

After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.

Her books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they were to write.

Shadows Never Lie (Shadow Duet Book 1) by Lark TaylorMy review:Ok, going into this knowing that there is a book 2.....And I just have to start by saying I really appreciated that they are identical twins who don't get along. So often they are BFF and twin telepathy and all that. And it does happen. But not always.I have to admit I was sucked in from the start. Especially since the first chapter was present day and then chapter two starts the back story. Just from chapter 1 I wasn't expecting their younger years to be as they were. And I really wanted to hate Dominick. But once more information about his life came to light AND how he started treating Ryan, I had a soft spot for him. Max (Ryan's twin) on the other hand, can go scratch. It will take a lot for him to redeem himself in book 2 if that even happens.I kind of saw the cliffhanger coming. I still wasn't prepared. Oh my heart just broke. And I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! Good thing book 2 comes out in 2 weeks...4 pieces of eye candy ... See MoreSee Less

Avalanche (Ricochet Ridge) by Jillian Wray My reviewI really liked these two characters and how they aren't exactly what you expected.First, yes they are step brothers. But they are 4 years apart AND Stone left when he was 18. You can extrapolate that there wasn't even a crush between these two guys until this book. Hero worship, yes. Romantic crush, nah.Stone, kind of a hot shot on the mountain because he is part of the blasting crew who set charges to trigger avalanches when no one is on the mountain. He is obviously good looking and popular, but the outside doesn't necessarily match the inside. And Hanlon, babied his whole life because he has a mild case of cerebral palsy, but he also grew into a independent college senior who has a gym body, is confident, out and proud. The quiet kid grew into a confident adult and the confident kid turned into a quiet adult. There was animosity between the step brothers for different reasons. But once they pushed past that and they started feeling things, it got interesting.Again, role reversal of the stereotypical characters. And that made it so fun.It sucked that they basically had to stay in the closet. Because of family and because of work. But we all know that doesn't last forever. And I totally understand their parents feeling the way they do. But like good parents, they found acceptance in their hearts. The CP representation was done really well. Showed that there are different levels of CP and even when it isn't overtly obvious, there's still a lot that a person has to deal with.AND I learned more about avalanches.4 pieces of eye candy ...
