Two Chicks Obsessed with Books & Eye Candy

Sharing our love of M/M Romance

Unforgotten (Forgiven Book 2) by Garrett Leigh: New Release Review

February 22, 2021 by Denise

Billy Daley hasn’t been home in years, and he likes it that way. He’s just fine on his own—he has a cash-in-hand job at a scrapyard, a half-feral cat to keep him company, and many miles between him, his hometown and all the baggage that comes with it.

Until the job goes sideways. Suddenly he’s back in Rushmere, working for none other than his brother’s best friend—a man whose kiss Billy can’t seem to forget.

Gus Amour’s memories of Billy Daley are all spiky edges, lips crushed against lips and a reckless streak that always ended in trouble. But when Billy needs a place to stay, Gus steps in. He’d do anything for the Daley family, including living, and working, side by side with a man who makes his heart beat too fast and his blood run too hot—two things he’s been running from for years.

It doesn’t take long before their easy banter, lingering touches and heated glances become a temptation too hard to resist. But falling into bed and falling in love are two different things, and love has never come easy to either Billy or Gus. Only when fate threatens to steal away their opportunity for a second chance will they realize they don’t need easy.

They just need each other.

This is book 2, but can easily be a stand alone. I didn’t read book 1 as it is a traditional MF romance and that isn’t my jam any longer. It was pretty easy to extrapolate the background story that was explicitly told.

So there’s Billy. Left home when he was old enough and lived a bit like a nomad. Six months here, six months there, before moving on. Working odd jobs, sleeping where he can and dealing with the residual pain after and accident and shoulder surgery. His time at his current location is cut short when he gets fired for punching someone who hurt his cat. The cat is ok, don’t worry. I’d punch someone for hurting my cat too! With pretty much no options, he figures he would head back home where his brother lives. But they have a strained relationship at best AND his brother’s girlfriend lives with him. But Gus, Billy’s brother’s best friend. And the brother of Billy’s girlfriend, said he could stay with him.

And so begins forced proximity, grouchy Billy, far too sunshiney Gus and a fabulous cat named Grey.

Billy and Gus had kissed once about five years ago. And they both continue to think about it. But as men are wont to do, no one brings it up. They brood and daydream and fantasize about each other. While working AND living together.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Gus and Billy. They learned to live and work together before they learned how to be together. But of course there were still issues with that- mostly from things unsaid which lead to misunderstandings.

There were a couple of things that I would have wanted- Billy discovering that he was demisexual for one. It was never said, but it was fairly obvious to me. Gus had a breakthrough with Billy about his past, but never with Luke (Billy’s brother) or Mia (Gus’s sister). So I feel like a lot was left unsaid.

Overall, though, I enjoyed this book. The time spent building the relationship between Billy and Gus made for a deeper story.

Love Me Tenor (Perfect Harmony Book 2) by Annabeth Albert: New (Re-)Release Review

February 1, 2021 by Denise

Their fake relationship may trick the viewers—and also themselves…

Trevor Daniels is out of chances. The recent college graduate doesn’t know what to do with his life, and going back home to his family is no longer an option. The one thing he can do though is sing. A chance to be on a reality show designed to find the next superstar boy band group may be exactly what he needs to turn his life around.

But the show wants him to fake a relationship. With another guy. A really, really hot guy who is none too happy to be paired with Trevor. And now they have to room together too?

Jalen Smith doesn’t want to be stuck with the uptight tenor, but he might have no choice. He too wants a shot at stardom, and if he has to fake attraction, then so be it. Except as the show goes on, less and less faking is needed, and more and more lust is springing up off camera.

But Trevor’s hiding a dangerous secret, one that could ruin more than their chances at winning the show. Can the truth give them the opportunity of a lifetime?

Love Me Tenor was previously published. This version has received a light editing update, but otherwise it’s the same fan-favorite story. Contains two reluctant allies faking a relationship, fake boyfriend hijinks, bunkbed escapades, first time feel, plenty of steam, and a guaranteed happy ending.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

The second book in a series of 3 that were rereleased by the author.

Another singing competition, this time trying to create a boy band. We met Trevor in the last book as the best friend of Lucas. Since then, Trevor has come out of the closet and been disowned by his family. With no where- literally- to go, he reluctantly agrees to be part of a group competing to be the next big boy band.

Like the previous, perhaps a little dated in the concept of singing competitions and boy bands. But it was still kind of fun. Fake boyfriends, real boyfriends who are eerily alike, religious zealot parents all while being recorded almost 24/7.

We definitely get to see another side of Trevor, mostly because he assume Jalen is straight. I did like that those stereotypes were challenged. Just because Jalen looks like this, doesn’t mean he is straight. Jalen did cause a bit of unnecessary angst by not just coming clean, but that’s a bit understandable too.

The story was definitely more in the house and their everyday life rather than the competition, but we still follow that as well. Although there are only 3 groups competing and, again, a bit stereotyped. But with the addition of social media and how important it is for competitions like this, it was fun.

Cute read, especially if you are a fan of singing competitions.

Treble Maker (Perfect Harmony Book 1) by Annabeth Albert: Re-Release Review

January 19, 2021 by Denise

He’s all about that bass…

Cody Rivers wants to be a music star. And this a cappella singing competition could be his best, last chance to make it happen. However, his punk style and rocker attitude don’t exactly fit in with the world of clean-cut, wholesome a cappella groups or reality music TV shows. Even worse, a bumbling bass singer from a rival group might be his undoing.

Lucas Norwood isn’t cut out to be a star. He’s content being in the background of his college a cappella group, trying not to trip over his feet while attempting to fit in with his more conservative friend group. He’s also determined not to let Cody’s barbs—or his smoking hot good looks—get to him.

When the show forces them to work together, their chemistry is undeniable, both on and off the stage. But giving into their attraction may have real consequences, especially with elimination looming. Will making their dreams come true mean losing each other?

Treble Maker was previously published. This version has received a light editing update, but otherwise it’s the same fan-favorite story. Contains two rival musicians who couldn’t be more opposite, first time feel, plenty of steam, and a guaranteed happy ending.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

Treble Maker was Annabeth Albert’s first published book. It has been rereleased with very small changes. I might have read it already, but because of my fabulous memory and the amount of books I read, I don’t remember it. That isn’t a bad thing.

As such, I am going to review this as if it was her first book. Because I liked it, but I didn’t love it. And I found some parts problematic, which I probably wouldn’t have even noticed the first time around. The more you know and all that.

The scene is a reality show a cappella competition. Pitch Perfect on tv. Cody just wants to make it as a singer. If he has to gather together an a cappella group to do it, so be it. He isn’t great at sharing the spotlight though.

Lucas is the opposite. Quiet guy, part of a collegiate group. Said college is very conservative and religious and his father is a professor there who has a small amount of fame from books he has written. Lucas is gay. Even out. But he has chosen abstinence, as they are taught that being gay isn’t a sin. It’s that “gay lifestyle” that is.

This is my problematic part. Cody really pushes Lucas. Pushes him into something he said he didn’t want. Or wanted, but wouldn’t act on. BUT being that when this was first published, the idea of explicit consent wasn’t really at the forefront.

So the story is split between the competition and rehearsing for it, and Cody pushing Lucas’ boundaries.

It was a fun story overall and once Lucas was all in with the sexy times- whew! It was hot. Lucas had a little kink that Cody had no problem working with and playing to which lead to some incredibly steamy scenes.

I also enjoyed Lucas taking a stand for himself with his parents toward the end of the book. I always root for someone standing up for themselves.

If you want to know how Annabeth Albert started off, or if you just enjoy a fun story, give it a go.

Right Move: A Gay Cowboy Romance (Clean Slate Ranch Book 6) by A.M. Arthur: New Release Review

January 18, 2021 by Denise

Opposites attract in this sexy, slow-burn romance, the next installment in A.M. Arthur’s fan-favorite Clean Slate Ranch series.

Levi Peletier is settled—for now. With his life on the rodeo circuit reined in, he’s content doing trick riding demos for tourists at Clean Slate Ranch and spending his off-hours with three finicky felines. It’s a life he’s grateful for, one that keeps his heart safe.

George Thompson couldn’t be less like the ruggedly sexy Levi. A onetime figure skating star, he’s hung up his skates to live in introverted anonymity in San Francisco. An effort to shake up his regular routine finds him at Thanksgiving dinner, dude ranch style, and he immediately falls in love with the gorgeous view—the wide-open spaces and big blue sky aren’t bad, either.

The country cowboy and the stay-put city boy strike up an unlikely friendship that blossoms into something more. But getting attached is a bad idea. Because the open road is calling to Levi, and it’s a call George can’t imagine answering. When the past catches up to them, this odd couple will have to decide if a future together is worth fighting for.

Amazon

Carina Press

The Clean Slate Ranch series is branching out. This time we get to know more about the twins in the upstairs apartment that we met in the previous book. And Levi, the trick rider we also met previously. This is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone.

George and Orry are twins who are very quiet and keep to themselves. But, by association, get involved with the Clean Slate Ranch “family”. A big Thanksgiving dinner and an injured cat bring George and Levi together. Even though George is a complete introvert and is bordering on agoraphobia and Levi is outgoing and loves the outdoors.

Levi slowly romances George without even meaning to, I don’t think. But the calls and lunches are definitely romantic. Levi is hesitant because of the age difference and because George is so shy. But with Levi, he slowly comes out of his shell.

I really like how Levi was portrayed. He has done a lot of soul searching the past 4 years after a tragedy and you can tell by the way he speaks how mindful he is. “I hear you and I respect that”. Very new age-y, hippyish, but it totally works for him.

Even though we got to know George, I don’t feel like his story was fully told.

Ugh, sometimes when you are “friends” with an author, reviews can be difficult. There is nothing wrong with this book at all. It is written well, there is a good romance, hot sex, care and respect given to past traumas and current virginities. There are even cute cats. And even though I liked the book and will recommend it- especially for followers of the author and/or series, it might be time to put the Clean Slate Ranch out to pasture.

Angels in the City by Garrett Leigh: New Release Review

December 21, 2020 by Denise

A fake relationship with a stranger. An office romance with doughnuts and white knights. An addictive arrangement—friends with benefits—fast turns to love.

Jonah Gray is rich, successful, and the most eligible bachelor in the city, according to his mother, at least. But the truth is, despite her efforts to pair him off, he’s fine on his own. All he needs is a date to the Christmas ball.

Sacha Ivanov is a lone wolf, content in the cycle of long days, late nights, and anonymous hook ups, but when a chance encounter in a broken-down lift brings a gorgeous copper-haired CEO into his life, everything begins to change.

As Christmas fast approaches, a favour for a stranger blooms into something more. He doesn’t do second dates or relationships. But for kind-hearted Jonah, his angel in the city, he might just change his mind.

Angels in the City is a Christmas themed MM friends-to-lovers, forced proximity, office romance. Expect fraught days, steamy nights, and true love built around festive snacks and Christmas trees.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

Fake boyfriends is always a fun trope. But these guys were strangers to fake boyfriends in 20 minutes! And then fake boyfriends to a one night stand. But they work in the same building on the same floor and share the same break room.

Sacha is a Russian expat living in London. Everyone thinks he is grumpy and scary. But Jonah saw the real Sacha when they first met. It’s the Sacha that keeps drawing Jonah in.

This was Christmas themed, but definitely not just only a Christmas book. In fact, I loved that Sacha (being Russian) doesn’t even celebrate Christmas. It’s nice to see a character that is different from the norm.

Something that surprised me- the low angst! Garrett Leigh is a master of angst! But nope, except for a mother who died when he was young and a father he doesn’t speak to, there was no drama!

Being that it was tame, there was also quite a bit about their respective jobs. Those parts were a little boring. I don’t want to sit in on meetings at my own job, let alone fictional ones.

Overall, a fairly feel good, low angst, Christmas is involved story.

Secret Daddy by J.R. Gray: New Release Review

December 13, 2020 by Denise

I hadn’t admitted to myself that my life was going nowhere until I first had him.

Living back in my small mountain town, in my childhood home, with my older brother, working at the library wasn’t as exciting as I imagined.

That was until a stranger came to the library one night and turned my world around.

Night after night, month after month, I waited for him after dark.

He never let me see his face but he always showed me how well he knew me. No one had ever read my needs so well or pushed me so far and I was in too deep before I even knew who he was.

I just called him Daddy.

****Secret Daddy is a Holiday MM romance featuring a small town, a librarian, a park ranger, and some forced proximity.

Amazon – Kindle Unlimited

That opening chapter is NOT for the faint hearted. Wooo boy. This book jumps right in with some kinky sex between the 2 main characters. I mean, I am fine with that. But just letting you know, there is no foreplay.

There is virtually no set up to the story. We didn’t really get to know the characters until they get snowed in together. And Aiden learns who his secret Daddy is. So even though they had this kinky, secret sex relationship together for months, we only got to see one scene.

And one of the things Aiden asks or points out several times is that he doesn’t want to lose that. But it never happens again in the book. I mean, they do continue their relationship and there is some kinky af happenings. But never again at the library.

There is also a back story that we only get a glimpse of with an older estranged brother. It made me think that I was missing a previous book. I wasn’t and apparently we are getting more of that story in another book.

This book wasn’t my favorite- from the kind of backwards storytelling to Aiden being just a complete brat13, like way over the top and no Dom would deal with that, to the missing pieces of the back story. But the kinky scenes were well done and I could really feel how much Jensen cared for and loved Aiden.

Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less
