Definitely Deacon (Belong to Me Book 2) by Vawn Cassidy: Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

April 18, 2022 by Denise

Jesse Ainsley’s life running his busy veterinary practice in the sleepy Cornwall bay he grew up in leaves no time for a serious relationship… at least, that’s what he tells himself, but the simple truth is much more cliché. He’s been in love with his best friend forever, but when he starts pulling away and goes radio silent on him for six months, Jesse begins to wonder if their friendship is finally over.

Deacon James lives his life at two speeds, a hundred miles an hour and stop. He’s spent the last decade travelling the world, winning races, partying with the most beautiful men and women, and living life on his terms, a life which was pretty close to perfect… with just one caveat… he’s never quite been able to get over the boy he left behind. His best friend Jesse has always made him yearn for something he’s too afraid to face and cutting him out of his life seemed like the only answer.

But things are never that simple. When Deacon wakes from an accident in Italy with Jesse asleep in the hospital chair beside him, he discovers Jesse’s been keeping secrets of his own.

At a crossroads in their life, they’re faced with a choice, build something deeper and stronger from the ashes, or let words unsaid and secrets tear them apart forever.

From author Wendy Saunders writing as Vawn Cassidy comes this second chance, friends to lovers, hurt/comfort with a HEA.

He shuffles out into the hallway with me hovering over him protectively. It must be really annoying, but I can’t seem to help myself. My mind keeps trying to remind me how close I came to losing him, and I keep having to elbow that annoying voice aside otherwise I’ll end up morphing into a stage five clinger.

Deak climbs the stairs, and I can’t help but stare at his firm arse. Why am I torturing myself like this? I’m happy just to have our friendship back, I can’t start dreaming about more, that way lies madness… and blue balls apparently.

“Jesse?” Deak says with a hint of uncertainty in his voice as he stops at the top of the stairs. “There’s two doors.”

“Well done, you can count.” I reply dryly.

“If that room is the bathroom, then that means this is a one-bedroom house,” he reasons out.

“And they said you were just a dumb sailor with a pretty face who only likes fast boats and even faster bed partners,” I say easily.

“Read that article, did you?” He turns to glance at me over his shoulder.

“Read?” My brows rise. “It’s framed and mounted on the wall in the downstairs toilet.”

“Fuck off,” he snorts. “Seriously though, where am I sleeping?”

“In the bed.” I blink at him as if the answer should be obvious.

“And you’ll be sleeping…?”

“On the play dough sofa,” I reply. “Did you miss the part where I called it the napping sofa? It is so named for a very obvious reason.”

He stares at me silently with a small smile playing on his lips. “I’ve really missed your sarcasm, Jess.” He shakes his head with a little laugh. “But I’m not kicking you out of your bed.”

“You’re not.” I shrug. “I offered it.

“Well you didn’t exactly, did you?” His brow folds. “You kind of got stuck with me because Garrett decided to start re-arranging the walls in his place.”

“Deak, it’s fine.” I shake my head again. “Seriously, I’ve slept in worse places than my incredibly comfy sofa thanks to Ryan’s beer tasting sessions.”

“Oh yeah?” he replies with one dark brow raised questioningly.

“Last time, I woke up naked on a golf course wearing nothing but a pair of argyle socks,” I admit ruefully. “I’m still not sure where the traffic cone came from. Still, I was better off than Ryan, he was naked and handcuffed. Not sure where the handcuffs came from either to be honest.”

Okay, I seriously needed this book in my life. Before Definitely Deacon, I picked up, and quickly put down no less than three other books. Not that they weren’t good, or that I won’t go back to them, but at that moment in time, they were not what I was needing. Now, full disclosure, I didn’t read Suddenly Beck, (although it is still in my tbr pile, and it got moved up quickly after this book), but I read Vawn Cassidy’s Dead Serious and FLOVED it. If you haven’t read it, go right now, grab it…I’ll wait…hurry up…it’s just fantastic. So, I snatched this one right up and wasn’t disappointed.

I don’t generally use the phrase “all the feels”, but this one really did give me all the feels. Childhood friends turned into first loves until grief was too much for Deak and he had to leave. And he really couldn’t come back until he found what it was he was looking for, which as it turned out was there all along. See? All the feels. Deak really had it rough. He held it together a long time, despite having some heavy sh!t happen to him along the way. He still managed to keep a sweet, loyal and funny personality. Impressive considering, but a testament to all the people who helped him along the way, as well as his inner strength.

Jesse, so very different from his twin brother, but you can definitely see how connected they were. Beck didn’t even hesitate to drop everything and take Jesse to Rome when he needed to be there for Deak. Jesse was sarcastic, made me laugh many times, but also didn’t have the best opinion of himself, which seemed to be very much wrapped around how Deak kept distancing himself further and further from him, causing so much additional strain on Jesse. Even something as impressive as becoming a veterinarian he described as “playing with puppies all day”. He was the rock that Deak needed, but didn’t know it, until almost too late. Definitely some hurt along the way, and it isn’t easy to move past that kind of pain and secrets..

I’ve realized between the two books that I’ve read from this author, that a strength of hers is side characters. They don’t just appear, do what they are supposed to do, then disappear. They are funny, quirky, memorable characters. Maybe they’ll get a book, maybe they won’t, but you don’t finish the book and think “now which of the side characters did X”. That’s a talent to be cultivated and enjoyed. Whether it was Deak’s friends, Jin, Kyan, Damien or his silver fox Uncle Garrett, they all had their own personalities and quirks.

There’s definitely more to explore in the bay, so I hope to see where this goes.

The Moves We Make by CD Rachels: Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

April 15, 2022 by Denise

Landon
On my university soccer team, people see me as an obnoxious loud-mouth, but this semester, I’m turning over a new leaf. Part of that involves supporting my best friend and his new relationship (with a guy!). Ravi being gay has really thrown me for a loop. The way he looks at Steven, it makes me feel… jealous? I’m not gay, but no girl has ever made me feel the way those two feel about each other. To top it off, I’m forced to take my university arts requirement in the form of a dance class! I have to fumble around trying not to fail while the teaching assistant Dane refuses to take it easy on me.
Still, the longer I spend in dance class, the more I get to know the real Dane: he’s fun, interesting, sweet, attractive, and… did I say attractive?! No way, that’s not what I meant. Because if I actually feel that way then… turning over a new leaf just got a LOT more complicated.

Dane
Dance is my life, and being a performing artist is my ultimate goal. That’s why I took this university TA position and why I’m hoping to secure an internship in the big city. I refuse to get distracted by some (admittedly handsome) jock that I’m tasked with teaching. He’s uncoordinated, but eventually, I can tell that he’s actually trying, so I cut him some slack. There’s also the tiny detail that he admits he may not be 100% straight.
That’s fine by me. It’s not like a guy like that would go for someone with a messed up face like mine. Still, as the weeks go by, something shifts and we become closer. I can’t let myself become sidetracked in catching feelings for a boy who’s new to being queer. I just need to disregard the burning chemistry we have whenever we’re in the dance studio alone. It’ll be easy to ignore the way he makes my heart flutter when he talks to me, or how charming he is when he lets down his guard.
Well… maybe one kiss won’t hurt, right?

The Moves We Make is a low-angst, male/male romance, opposites-attract story involving hands-on movement lessons, road trips, drunken dance floors, soccer games, and discovering what love and sex with the RIGHT person can actually lead to, HEA guaranteed. It is the second of the Artists and Athletes series but can be read as a standalone.

Going through my closet, I manage to find an old dark-brown suit and a white button-down I haven’t used in ages. They’re still clean, and I’m sure they’ll fit Dane, so I grab them and some black dress shoes and walk next door to the guest bedroom. I lay out all the clothes on the bed and stare at them intently as if they’ll soon reveal to me some secret code.

“Hey, you’re back!” I hear Dane close the door behind me.

“Yeah, I got you some—” My words are cut off as my brain short-circuits. Dane is standing in front of me all wet and wearing only a towel. The remnants of shower water dribble down his rippling abs, and all of a sudden, I can’t speak. I knew dancers were fit, but I didn’t realize Dane was hiding the body of a Greek god under all those sweaters.

“Nice! A brown suit!” He thankfully doesn’t seem to notice my thirst. “Thanks, Landon!”

He walks over to the bed and puts on his white boxer briefs right in front of me under the towel, then lets the towel drop to the floor. Now that I have a direct view of his sculpted ass packaged in thin fabric, I can say for sure he’s nothing like the chicks I’ve been interested in before. Yet, with his back on full display as he pulls on my pants, it feels like…Do I think Dane is sexy? I can’t stop staring at his body, and these urges are pulling me toward him just like during puberty when I started jerking off to girls, but…Dane isn’t a girl. That would mean I’m…

I shake my head and take a step back. “Uh…” He turns to look at me. His right eye is so soft as he puts on the button-down shirt. “I’ll meet you downstairs!” I bolt out of there and shut the door, trying to catch my breath.

—

I stand outside by the buffet table, putting dressing on my salad. The inner courtyard of our house has been set up with a dozen round tables and heat lamps because it’s winter. Twenty guests roam around, most of whom are either chatting with my parents or talking to my siblings—Link, Kara, and my older brother Lars with his wife. Eventually, Dane makes it outside, and fuck, is he hotter with the suit on than he is half naked? Is that a thing?

I try to push down all these bi-curious thoughts. “Dane! Come get some food!” I smile and wave him over.

“Thanks man. This is”— he looks around— “lavish.”

“My parents like to do it big for these parties.” He smiles at this and starts putting food on his plate. Eventually we sit down at a table in the corner away from the crowds.

“You think you got the internship?”

“I hope so. They seemed genuinely interested in me.”

“I hope you get it too. Just think, if you get it, since I live nearby, maybe we can hang out in the summer.”

I eat some salad and look at him. An expression I don’t recognize flashes across his face before he smiles again. “For sure.”

Okay, I came into this one in the second book so I need to go back and read the first one because I feel like it’s going to be about Ravi and Steven, who are so very cute in this one, I really wanna read their story… in saying that, having started with this one, it didn’t take anything away from this one, so I didn’t feel lost or out of the loop with anything. This story is about Dane and Landon…

Landon, I was unsure about in the beginning. He’s your typical dude bro and obnoxious is putting his personality lightly. He wasn’t intentional about it though and he quickly became a lovable obnoxious dude bro… does that make sense? Anyway… a star player on the school’s soccer team, he’s forced to take an artsy class and his coach pulled some strings to get him into Dane’s dance class.

Dance is Dane’s life. He’s a TA for the dance class that Landon has just been enrolled in for the semester and he is not happy about. Dane has a physical abnormality and if you add that on top of being openly gay and a dance major, I can imagine the dude bro types are not his cup of tea.
Or, well, they are, but he doesn’t want them to be. He’s been bullied by those types because of those things and Landon just seems like one of them. He treats him accordingly in the beginning, but as Landon did with me, he won Dane over pretty quickly.

What I love about this story, is how real it feels. It was all really genuine, especially in Landon’s quest in curiosity. He was very narrow minded or maybe just uneducated in his idealization of what gay or bi means and the type’s of people that are. I liked how he didn’t really bat an eye at it once he realized his feelings or attraction for Dane.As a matter of fact, nobody really batted an eye about it and I loved seeing that. I have teenage kids that are heading into college in the next year or two, one of them is gay. We live in a small conservative town with zero support for the LGBTQ community, so I’m hoping they can find a place where there’ an open community and such acceptance. Fingers crossed, right?

All in all though, I enjoyed watching Landon’s growth in not only himself but just his understanding. I loved how once he developed feelings for Dane, he didn’t question them and he was proud to be seen with him, especially because Dane has not really been self conscious about his appearance because of the eye but because he never expected someone like Landon to see him in any sort of romantic light and the fact that fell for him and let himself fall of Landon was so cute.

I really need to go back and read book one, but this series is going to be an insta-click buy for me because i can’t wait to see who’s next!

If you like charming loud mouths who occasionally sticks his foot in it, then you’ll love watching these two dance around each other…(see what I did there? Wink wink) Super cute story!

Rising Heat by Elizabeth Hollows: Release Blitz, Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

Can a sweet and sexy fireman change a fling into a happily ever after?

Neil Farris is your typical ‘love ’em and leave ’em’ type. He’s been told his biggest fear is commitment, but he’s not bothered by that. He doesn’t see the point of a long-term relationship. He either gets bored or his partners realize he’s too bossy and scathing. It’s easier to stick to one-night stands.

When his boring work conference in Brisbane sends him to the wrong hotel, he finds himself surrounded by gorgeous firemen. Luckily for him, one of them is gay and interested in a good time.

Scott Fields is everything Neil looks for in a fling—gorgeous, good in bed and temporary. He’s also nice and considerate, which is a bonus. It’s a shame Neil only gets two nights with the fireman before he’s returning home.

However, much to his surprise, he runs into Scott a few days later. It turns out they’re both from the same town. When Scott asks him out, Neil is hesitant but agrees. He really isn’t interested in dating or relationships. Can the sweet and sexy fireman change his mind?

Neil Farris had never seen the point to relationships. They only seemed to breed drama and boredom. Why choose one person to sleep with when the options for many were only a bar trip away?

His co-worker Denise often joked that he could find a fling in a haystack. He took it as a point of pride. He didn’t need to settle down into monotony when he could be the envy of many with a few well-placed flirtations. Sex was what he was after, not some white picket fence.

Yet despite her remarks, Neil hadn’t expected to have much luck at his yearly manager’s meeting. Not only did he know better than to sleep with his colleagues if he wanted his flings to remain flings, but the last three years had been the same boring routine.

He managed a men’s clothing store that specialized in affordable formal and stylish casual wear. Hardgroves was a leader in the industry with twelve stores in Queensland alone, and they wanted to maintain their foothold in the market. He’d driven the four hours down to Brisbane with the plan to check into his hotel and catch up with the few other managers he liked.

Instead, he found a mistake in the booking culminating in his lost reservation. Thirty minutes of back and forth with the company and he had alternative accommodation in a different hotel twenty minutes across town.

When he finally arrived, tired and annoyed, the last thing he’d expected was a lobby full of eye candy. A dozen muscled men were carrying duffel bags and chatting in small groups. Some were tanned, and some had tattoos. There were a few women with them, but Neil only had eyes for the guys.

Let it be a convention for gay singles.

He didn’t know where to look, but Neil quickly found his attention grabbed by a man at reception. His upper body had an attractive V-shape, his arms were muscled without bulging and the view only got better farther down. Neil crossed the lobby to stand behind him. The man’s khaki pants hinted at a firm bottom and taut thighs. He was a head taller than Neil with short black hair that was spiking at the top. He was compact in a way that showed he was no stranger to working out.

Now that’s a man I’d happily show a good time.

Neil would have continued his admiration if the man hadn’t stepped backward and turned. He nearly collided with Neil but jerked away in time.

“Sorry,” he apologized. “I didn’t realize someone was there.”

The man’s eyes were as blue as the sky, and his smile was friendly. Neil swallowed down three pickup lines.

“Don’t worry about it.”

The man flashed another grin before taking a better grip on his bag. He walked over to a group congregating farther inside the hotel. They welcomed him with laughter, backslaps and familiarity. Neil forced his attention to the reception desk rather than the man’s biceps. The young woman behind the desk gave him a knowing smile.

“Annual fireman’s training,” she explained. Her eyes flicked toward the men before back to Neil, and she lowered her voice. “It gives us the best view in the city for the next week.”

“I suddenly don’t mind being in a different hotel from my colleagues.”

“Ooh, you get all the firemen to yourself. Well, half of them.” She winked. “I want my share, too.”

Neil laughed. He glanced at the men again, lingering on the one who’d almost bumped into him. He was just Neil’s type. Being a fireman only added to his appeal.

When Neil turned back to the receptionist, he matched her grin.

“How about you get the straight ones and I’ll get the gay ones?”

“Perfect!” They shared another smile before she cleared her throat. “Now, how can I help you?”

“I’ve got a reservation.”

She took a few minutes to sort everything out, but Neil soon picked up his small suitcase and headed to his room. The hotel wasn’t the height of luxury, but it was well-maintained. The two-story building had a bar off the lobby, along with a small restaurant. His room was on the ground floor and down a hall just past reception. It had all the standard amenities with a decent-sized bed. He placed his suitcase on the luggage rack and opened it. Originally, he’d planned to order room service and relax, but the firefighters changed things. Pulling out a nice dress shirt and jeans, Neil headed to the bathroom. It didn’t matter that it wasn’t a club. He needed to look his best if was going to catch anyone’s attention. A quick shower helped Neil feel refreshed, and he double-checked his reflection in the mirror. His sandy-blond hair looked naturally tousled and fell just below his ears. The shirt he wore was white with a subtle pattern of small palm trees. The leather bracelet around his left wrist partially obscured his tattoo of a sun. He grinned at the mirror, knowing he looked good.

Grabbing his wallet, room key and phone, Neil slipped them into the pocket of his jeans and stepped out of the room. The hall was empty, but when he reached the lobby, he noted that there weren’t as many firemen as there had been before. Neil was quick to spot the one from reception. He was at the bar, ordering drinks with four others. It only took one more once-over for Neil to make his choice. He crossed the room and took a place leaning against the bar two stools down from the group. His chosen firefighter glanced at him, his blue eyes locking onto Neil’s green. Neil smiled. He held the man’s gaze, feeling a thrill go through him. Neil knew the game well, and he was certain there was interest in the fireman’s eyes. Neil only looked away when the bartender approached.

Once his beer was poured, he glanced back at the man and subtly listened to the conversation. They were talking about the upcoming training course and their travels to get to Brisbane. Three of them were from the same town but the other two were from different parts of the state.

It sounded a lot like Neil’s own management meeting. He took a sip of his beer and glanced at the men again. His blue-eyed fireman was already looking at him. If they had been at a club, Neil would crook his finger and gesture the man over. Or maybe he’d turn on his stool, sprawling his back over the bar and making it easy for the fireman to step between his open legs. However, with the man surrounded by his friends and colleagues, Neil knew it would be better to wait. He settled for smiling again before taking his beer and heading into the attached restaurant.

Neil selected an empty table with a good view. The group from the bar plus nine more firefighters entered the restaurant for dinner. There were attractive men wherever Neil turned, but he found his gaze kept falling back to the same man. He was watching Neil, too. They exchanged glances throughout dinner, and that found anticipation and desire sparking through Neil. He felt confident enough to move back to the bar after his meal. He ordered another drink and waited. A few of the firemen left to return to their rooms, but the one Neil cared about was soon stopping at the bar stool beside Neil’s.

“Mind if I join you?” he asked

“Not at all.” Neil shifted to better face him and held out his hand. “I’m Neil.”

“Scott,” he replied.

Their palms lingered together for longer than necessary and a noticeable tension was thrumming through the air as their gazes stayed locked. It didn’t take a genius to realize the guy was interested in him, too.

Gay, hot and only meters from my hotel room. Could this be any more perfect?

When they dropped hands, Scott took a seat on the stool. He angled his body close enough that their shoulders brushed. Neil’s desire grew from that small touch.

“I didn’t think there would be anyone else here,” Scott said. “I thought we’d have booked out the hotel.”

“Seems I lipped through the cracks,” Neil replied. “Lucky me.”

When the bartender came over, Scott ordered a matching beer. Neil had another sip of his but kept his gaze on the fireman. Scott was lightly tanned and had a cluster of three small moles on the side of his neck. Neil wanted to mouth at them until the skin surrounding them was red and flushed. This was the type of fireman who’d be perfect for their famous, shirtless charity calendars—only Neil wanted him removed of all his clothes.

“So, what brings you to the hotel?” Scott asked, dragging Neil’s attention from Scott’s neck.

“Annual manager’s meeting,” he said. “There was a mistake with my booking, so I ended up here.” Neil openly ran his gaze over Scott. “Not that I’m complaining. In fact, I’m going to take advantage of my good fortune.”

Because if a one-night stand was practically falling in his lap, he wasn’t about to ignore it. Lately, it took more effort and drinks for Neil to get into someone’s pants. Right now, Neil felt he could score before they reached a second glass.

“Sounds like a good plan to me,” Scott said, his attention dropping to Neil’s mouth. “A lot of the guys are having an early night.” He caught Neil’s gaze again. “But I figure that I’m in a new city, and I should have some fun.”

There was a suggestive note to his voice that filled Neil with eagerness. He held out his glass for a toast.

“To a night of fun, then.”

Scott brought their glasses together with a soft clink. They never broke eye contact, and Neil already knew they would have sex by the end of the night.

In fact, if he played his cards right, Neil was certain it could happen within the hour.

Scott and Neil…. siiiigh…
I saw firefighter and lost all sense of rationale. I had to read it. I have a kink for them I think. I wasn’t disappointed.

In this one we meet Neil and the story is told from his POV. He’s a tough nut to crack at first. I’ll admit and I wasn’t sure I was going to warm up to him. I tend to roll my eyes at the overuse of the ‘I don’t do relationships so much so, that I have an open dialogue about how I don’t do relationships’…because those are the hardest to fall, right? It’s inevitable, of course, it happens….Because of that, I’m not a fan of the troupe, if I can be honest.

However, Neil and his internal dialogue were so so very relatable. He wasn’t unreasonable, his actions weren’t out of nowhere and he was wary, but honest from the beginning and throughout, so it was such a genuine feeling of going through that with him that made this an enjoyable read for me.

Scott is the best. We meet him while he’s attending a convention or a seminar of some sort doing training while Neil is staying at the same hotel. They have instant chemistry, and it was only supposed to be one night. What’s the worst that could go wrong? Right? Well when Scott goes looking for a new shirt a couple of weeks later, he walks right into the store where Neil is the manager of and he can’t believe his luck. They live in the same town.

I liked how confident Scott was in going after what he wanted with Neil, especially when Neil could come off as standoffish and unsure. It was just one of the reasons I liked them so well together. They were complete and total opposites but they worked so incredibly well together.

Scott has a huge family and is close with all of them. They all get together at least once or twice a month and his work family count just as much. Neil has a big family, but they aren’t as close. Not in a bad way, just in a way that means they have their own lives and see each other when they can. Scott is so easy going. He’s goes with the flow. He doesn’t get upset by much…

Neil seems kinda neurotic at times and is a little standoffish until you get ot know him… and then, maybe a little even still…He’s so worth getting to know though. He really takes us through it while he works through in a healthy way, how to get over his aversion to trust and commitment and it feels genuine and real and honest, and I really related to it in a way that had me reading this book in a single afternoon. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down.

If you like slow burns, with a sweeter than sweet guy and the guy he cares so much about…you’ll love this one!

“We’ve been seeing each other for weeks, but I’m nervous too. Something has shifted, hasn’t it?”

Oliver’s breath hitched. Something had shifted. Everyone said love was simple, but it wasn’t. It was layered and complicated. And there were different levels of love.

Childhood love. Adult love. Instant love.

Lasting love.

Still shaky, Oliver made his way to Nico. He had loved Nico in secret. Could Oliver love him in the light? Where every flaw would be exposed, Nico’s and his own? He hadn’t realized how heavily those fears had been inside of him until this moment.

Finally accepting the loan had been like turning a glaring spotlight on, and he’d been fearful of what he’d see.

Only he’d seen Nico. Standing with him, whatever path he chose. And something had shifted. The fears oozed away. The darkness stopped pressing on his chest.

And now, his heart could beat, could soar.

Oliver smiled. Slowly, at first, and then wider and wider. By the time he reached Nico on the couch, he was weightless, gliding on air.

Oliver swept him up and wrapped his arms around him.

“What the hell.” Nico laughed.

Oliver spun him in his arms. And, just the way he’d always fantasized about that long-ago hotel room night, he carried Nico to the bed.

Undressing, touching, kissing, Oliver kept some part of them linked. Nico’s braces and their clothes came off, but they never ceased caressing each other. Usually, he used sex to forget himself, to escape for a while, but this was the opposite.

Touching Nico, Oliver was totally himself. His skin flushed. Joy bubbled through him as they kissed. Nico’s lips on his made his pulse pound. Their tongues, tasting and teasing, made him ache. Their torsos pressed, leaving no space between them. It was timeless. Today felt like yesterday and tomorrow converging. Their touches were more than a memory. Without beginning or end. Without distance or boundaries.

No music except the music of their bodies. No light needed, except their hearts.

This book is fourth in the series, although I haven’t read any of the previous. However, the cover for The Christmas Lights Battle (Book 1) is so darn adorable, I think I have to go back and read it anyway. I didn’t feel lost at all by not having read the previous books, although you do get to see all the previous couples make appearances in this second chance romance, friends to lovers book.

This book is super sweet, with an MC with an ongoing disability (yeah for representation!), although sadly that disability led to abuse from his father towards his mother. The other MC is his high school sweetheart (are they sweethearts if they aren’t out?) who was left in pain with no answers, and built a wall that nobody has been able to tear down in all these years.

It took a lot of plucking at those bricks, over and over and over by Nico, to get through that wall. Even when he did, Oliver patched it right back up again, not trusting himself when it came to loving someone. For me, it was a bit too much of back and forth by Oliver. He kept seeing Nico, falling in love with him and his daughter, but then pulled back often. He did finally let go, including swallowing his pride some, but it seemed a bit too prolonged for me.

Nico definitely had his reasons for leaving, and it would be easy to condemn him for making a “promise” to show up that night. However, at that age, how many people are able to make those types of decisions, taking people outside themselves into account? It’s unlikely, especially with the differences in situations. Also, I really didn’t understand the name thing, especially after he was of age. That one was a complete mystery to me. What a fantastic father though!

This one didn’t quite hit the fluffy beach read that I was expecting, and had some unexpected pieces that didn’t work as well for me. Overall, a sweet romance, that brings back characters from previous books, that should make readers of this series happy.

Craig leaned forward, his heart caught in his throat. Perspiration dripped down his face, and he shuddered as excitement thrummed through him. So close. Oh God, he was close. So close.

He tensed, words lodged in the back of his throat, almost ready to be released but Not. Quite. Yet. Fingers curved, digging for purchase on something, anything, around him.

A few more seconds. He could hold out. He wouldn’t let go until he was sure. That strain on his body didn’t matter two seconds later.

He erupted, launching up from the hard bleacher seat he’d been on as he watched his son and his team compete in the semi-finals of the Little League World Series.

“Yes!”

All around the parents and friends of the team were cheering beside him. His son, Cody, was twelve this year, and it was his last year to participate. And Cody’s double had allowed his teammate to get that winning run.

Craig’s legs were weak as he continued cheering. He wanted to sink back down to the seat, but wouldn’t. Tears burned his eyes as he watched all of his son’s teammates gather and cheer to celebrate their win.

“Congrats, Craig.”

He accepted the hug from the father of another player, Christopher.

“Same to you. This is great for them.”

The man crossed his arms and nodded. “Sure will help line up the women.”

Craig frowned. “They’re twelve.”

Christopher smirked. “Never too young to start.”

Craig disagreed. “Yeah, they are. And it’s not happening with my boy.”

The man’s wife dropped between them with a squeal. “What are you two talking about? Colleges that will come after them?”

“Something like that,” Christopher said.

Emily kissed Craig’s cheek. “Congratulations, Craig.”

“You too, Emily.”

The blonde bounced down a few more bleacher steps to continue chatting it up with other families. Their son was one of the pitchers on the team.

“I just mean,” Christopher continued, “I need him to know he should have a bitch on his arm, not be sucking dick, isn’t that right?”

Holding Christopher’s blue eyes, Craig clamped his mouth down on his initial response and weighed his words. The last thing he wanted to do was make the year difficult for his son.

“Right now? Right now, I’m going to be the supportive and very fucking proud father of my son. I’m not thinking of his choice in a partner, because he’s twelve.” He stepped closer and lowered his voice. “I’ll support my son regardless, because it’s not only his choice but as his parent, it’s mine to support and love him unconditionally.”

Leaving before he put his fist in the man’s face, he walked to the steps and made his way down, progress hampered by all the celebrating. Not that he minded.

Okay, I’m coming into this short read, right in the middle. I had no idea who these people were or anything about the previous stories, but it didn’t take anything away from this story, so I was thankful for that because I saw a single dad and…well….they’re hot, right?

In this one, it’s action from the second you open the book. We meet Craig, who is at his son’s little league game and they’ve just won. In the first few pages, you get a homophobic teammate’s dad and a terribly obvious, terrible mother of his own child. Both of these people and their hateful views seemed so out of the blue and it was a lot all at once, then, the next paragraph… an accident. So, it was a lot, all at once. In saying that…

Because it’s a quick read, we don’t get to know much about Dr. Pearson (Bobby) other than he seems outspoken and kind of invasive for a doctor. I found it kind of charming but putting myself in a patients place it seemed kinda weird to me. He spoke to Craig as if they were old friends and it didn’t feel like a patient/doctor relationship at all.  Craig was also very cussy, and I’ll admit, I’ve got a mouth like a trucker, but it was all so overused and unnatural. Cody’s dialogue too… how old was this kid? 12 or 30? I’m unsure.

I had a hard time with Craig’s ex, Cody’s mother. I have a hard time believing that people actually act that way. That they say things like that out loud, knowing how stupid they sound. I was cringing at her character the entire time.

When the ex finds out that Cody is going to be on TV because of his baseball championship that is called “World Series Finals” or something like that, she all of a sudden wants to be in his life again, and even takes them all to court.

It was a quick read and angsty read, so if those are your things, I’d say this one is for you.

There is a lot to unpack in this book. Book 1 had fallen a bit flat for me, but I really liked that the author had representation from the Asian community, as this one also does. So, I wasn’t sure what to expect with book 2, as sometimes the second in a series can be underwhelming. I enjoyed this one quite a bit more.

One of the biggest reasons why I enjoyed it, was the reality that was brought into it. Ray was super rich, and along with that, he had a job where he did things as he wanted, no matter what, and always got away with it. The consequences, thus far had been minimal. However, in the case of the situation he found himself in, Ray was going up against something unexpected at a paper company of all places (I won’t say what, because spoiler), and clearly had no idea how to handle it. In the end, that is quite obvious. Even that, though, shows a reality when you get yourself in over your head, and you think you can do what you want. Sometimes life will just kick you in the nuts and say “Nope, I win”. Meanwhile, though, Ray finally figured out what a great person he had in Elvin, his assistant, but more than that, his person.

Elvin, very clearly, was in love with Ray. How nobody saw that, it’s truly a mystery. Even knowing, though, that he would likely never get a chance to be with Ray, he continued to help him with what he could, (even in a particularly yucky situation), knowing he was making Ray’s life easier. Ray was a fixer, always wanting to clean up for everyone in his life, and taking so very little for himself. It was lovely to see him finally get a chance at the love of his life finally. And once they got together, they were good for each other…other than some dumb stuff Ray did…but he got his crap together, so we’ll forgive him. 🙂

Having an MC that was pansexual and one that was demisexual (and a virgin!) was great. With Ray being the type of person he was, Elvin as well, it seemed appropriate for both of them.

Side note: Ming grew on me quickly.

Definitely recommend this one. It has some action, some unexpected twists, some heart-wrenching moments, but an HEA.

Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less
