Guest Post

Hi, Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy *waves*

You probably haven’t heard the name Bree Cariad before. I’m the inspirational side of A Thia Thing.

As Bree, I’ve been focused on writing m/f as that is where most inspirational books reside, but when I saw the open submission from Dreamspinner Press about this wonderful anthology where the proceeds go to help those in the LGBT community in Florida who were affected by the Orlando shooting, the need to help struck and the hugest plot bunny attacked my brain and I saw a way to bring out an m/m inspirational series.

The first draft of Everyday Miracles, the story featured in the One Pulse Anthology, poured out of me in about two hours. As if the story had to be told and I couldn’t move until it was out of my head.

Certain characters are overwhelming to an author, and Reverend Jonathon Neiland is one. He has so many levels to him and has this incredibly strong need to help and this belief that right will always overcome prejudice as long as he leans on the Lord. Unfortunately, that belief sometimes overshadows the darker side of the world and how to make his way through it. Thus enters the other hero in Everyday Miracles – Court Brecker.

Brecker lives in the world, knows how to make things work, though he is admittedly woefully unaware of the issues in LGBT community. However, when he sees something that needs to be done, he ignores what others say, goes with his gut, and makes things happen. And it takes only a couple hours for him to know that their community needs what Reverend Neiland is asking for: a shelter for homeless LGBT youth.

Unlike my books as a whole, this short story is not a romance. It is, however, a case of Love Conquers All, which incidentally is the name of my new series. Everyday Miracles is a prequel to the first novel in the series, of which the 1st draft is complete and just under 80,000 words. Light in the Dark Night is a romance and I plan to release it next year.

I hope to find more inspirational m/m romances. While I have a wide classification of genres I read *and write*, I love M/M Romance and would love to see more inspirational stories out there.

Now you’re probably wondering about that A Thia Thing reference from above, aren’t you? *grins* I’m an author who writes in many genres. And some of them are different enough that I published them under different pseudonyms. But a year ago I started outing that I was all those names and a few weeks ago I launched a main website ~A Thia Thing~ which aggregates info from all my sites.

I’m me – You remember that old song “I’m a little bit country. I’m a little bit rock and roll”? Well, that basically covers me. I’m not a one concept person.

Under the name Bree Cariad, I write inspirational, sweet, and clean romance.

Under the name Thianna Durston, I write M/M Romance with a hint of spice. (Some call it erotic romance but I don’t because my stories are based on the characters and the romance. The sensual stuff is just added spice.)

Under the name Thianna D., I write m/f romance with a hint of spice.

And under the name Cynthia Kimball, I write a wide range of subjects: non-fiction, poetry, young adult, romance, and sci-fi/fantasy. If you look deep, you’ll notice there is one thing that ties them all together: Metaphysics.

While I’m most prolific under the names Thianna Durston and Thianna D. – thus A Thia Thing – sometimes the need to write inspirational romance or metaphysics-based fiction/poetry overtakes me and I love it when that happens. I’m a very eclectic non-normative individual and love differences and the full spectrum that is life.

I thought I’d leave you with a snippet from Everyday Miracles—Reverend Jonathon Neiland has been working for four years to open an LGBT youth shelter, but the city council has shut him down every time. That the new leader of the council, Court Brecker, is on his side seems nothing short of a miracle.

excerpt

onepulse_cover_dspJonathon Neiland paced slowly back and forth in front of the city council doors. His hands shook slightly, a folder gripped firmly between them. They weren’t shaking from fear.

“Please, Lord,” he murmured under his breath. “Please fill me with your grace. I’m fighting the anger I feel toward the men inside that room. For years, they have blocked each move I’ve made to finish this center. You helped me find a way around each one. But we’re at the finish line. I need their okay to finish the home and make it an official part of the trust. All I need is a three-to-two vote in our favor.”

For four years, the council had pushed back his request. They needed more information or they required proof of something or…. But they couldn’t push back any more. He did everything they asked—even when it was redundant and nothing more than busy work—and the place was ready. Once he had their approval, they could open the doors officially as a youth shelter which would allow him to widen his reach for more money and more options for his kids.

“And my anger isn’t helping,” he admitted in a rush, feeling tears prick his eyes. “This isn’t for me. Please, Lord. Please. This is for your sons and daughters who have been kicked out of their homes just because of who they are. Please help this go through.”

The fact was, Jonathon had put all his money and that of his friends into the venture. The sheer number of homeless LGBT teens in the county was staggering, and every month it went up. Each month he saw that the house he’d renovated and made ready would not be big enough if they were lucky enough to round them all up. But he couldn’t afford any more. If the five men beyond that door would give their official stamp on it being a youth shelter, they could go forward.

The house was signed off on as far as the inspectors were concerned. All they needed were beds and food. Thirty-four youth were living in tents he had erected on the property. It wasn’t much, and they were tightly smooshed with six of them in each four-man tent, but he saw their gratitude daily for not having to live on the streets. For not having to beg or steal to survive. For not having to prostitute themselves to stay alive.

“And now all I need is their okay,” he murmured frantically, his fingers tightening on the folder. So close. So close to giving those kids a home, a home they would never be kicked out of because of who they were.

I hope you’ll enjoy this amazing anthology.

One Pulse

Stories drive life. Sometimes life is good; sometimes life is bad. But it’s the nature of our community that in the aftermath of an act of hatred, we respond with love. Because darkness cannot exist in the presence of light. Cruelty cannot stand against compassion. Negativity will never overcome hope.

To show our support for those affected by the Orlando shooting, our authors, editors, artists, and staff have volunteered their talents to create this anthology. All proceeds will be donated to LGBT organizations in central Florida. Join us as we celebrate the triumph of love over every obstacle.

synopsis

After his parents kicked him out for being gay, Marc Villegas lived on the streets before getting a second chance. Now he’s giving back by working at a shelter for LGBT teenagers—because helping fight their demons keeps his own at bay. Including his infatuation with the former best friend he’s sure is straight.

Anthony Romano hasn’t seen Marc since Marc left home eight years ago. In his confidant’s absence, Anthony turned to heroin. Now at rock bottom, he has an offer from Marc to help him get clean. Detox is hard and ugly, but not as hard as admitting the truth: he’s in love with Marc. Always has been.

Marc swore he’d never date an addict, but he never dreamed the one in question would be the man he’s always wanted to be with. As the two explore their feelings for each other, Marc faces a difficult choice. Say yes, and it could cost him his sobriety; say no, and it could cost him his heart.

excerpt

Marc jerked upright in bed, instantly alert, but uncertain what had woken him. A hint of light made it through the blackout curtains on his only window, enough to show he was alone in his room. He snagged his phone off the bedside table, but no one was calling him. No texts, and the alarm wasn’t going off.

Only a little after noon. He’d gotten home from his overnight at the shelter less than two hours ago and crashed right away.

Why the hell am I awake?

The distant chime of his doorbell, then muffled banging.

He sat up, covers falling to his waist. No one ever knocked on his door. The Beware Pit Bull sign on his front gate deterred solicitors, and he rarely ordered anything that needed to be delivered. People didn’t ring his bell for no good reason, and that sent Marc diving for a pair of workout shorts.

Sleeping in the nude wasn’t conducive to quickly answering the door.

The stairs challenged him a little, but whatever. Two hours of sleep. At the bottom, he pressed his eye close to the peephole. A young Latina, maybe late teens or early twenties, stood on his stoop. Familiarity hit him in the heart. Her face was thinner, her hair longer, but he knew her.

He snapped the two locks and flung the door open. “Maddy?”

“Hey, Marcos.” Madeline Romano haunted his stoop like a ghost from the past—which she very much was. Maddy was the little sister of his high school best friend, and he hadn’t seen her since he was sixteen years old.

“It’s Marc now.” Stupid thing to say. “What are you doing here?”

“I need your help.”

“Okay. Come in.”

He stepped back, shut the front door once she was inside and out of the January cold, then ushered her toward his lumpy sofa. “Can I get you something to drink?”

“No, I’m fine.” She was pretty far from fine, or she wouldn’t be here after eight years. “Did I wake you up?”

Marc glanced down at his backward shorts. “Um, give me one sec, okay?”

He fled upstairs for proper clothes. Whatever was wrong, he didn’t need to hear it in his underwear. After finding clean briefs, he put on jeans and a sweater. Maddy hadn’t moved from the couch. She clutched at a small purse like she expected it to disappear at any moment.

“How did you find me?” Marc asked as he sat next to her.

“The internet. You stayed in the city.”

“I did. Where are you living?”

“Philadelphia. Sort of. It’s where we moved to when I was twelve. I’m home on winter break. Senior year of college.”

“Good for you. What school?”

“Wesleyan.”

“Damn, chica. Congrats on that.”

She smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Thanks.”

“What’s Anthony up to?” Marc hadn’t thought about his former best friend in a while. After Marc’s parents had kicked him out at the end of his junior year of high school, Anthony’s family refused to help him or let them remain in contact. Marc hadn’t had any real way to keep in touch, anyhow. No money, no phone, no place to live. Maintaining a friendship hadn’t been part of his survival plan, and the one time he’d sought Anthony out, he discovered the entire family had moved. Apparently to Philly. And after enough years passed, finding Anthony again stopped feeling important.

After all, Anthony had never come looking for him.

Maddy squeezed her purse tight enough to make the leather squeak in protest. “He’s why I’m here.”

Marc’s heart kicked. “What happened?”

“After you left, he became a different person. Moody, angry, acting out. He quit the soccer team. Started getting into fights. He barely graduated, and our parents didn’t know what to do. A few months after graduation, he was arrested for possession.”

That news punched Marc in the gut. Anthony had always been about getting a soccer scholarship that would carry him to college first, then all the way to Europe. He’d dreamed of being a big-name soccer star, and he’d hated the idea of drugs. He’d turned his nose up at weed and didn’t even like to drink at parties.

“He got probation the first time.”

“The first time?” Marc squawked.

“Less than a month later, he was arrested again. He served four months.”

“Jesus Christ.”

Anthony had been in prison for drug possession.

“It destroyed our parents,” Maddy said. “None of us understood what happened. Why he changed l

ike that. When he got out, he was clean for a while. Even got a job at a car wash. We all thought he was doing good. Then Mom’s jewelry started going missing. Cash was missing. He kept staying out.”

“He was using again.” The words were bitter in Marc’s mouth.

“We had a family intervention. Rehab, or they’d kick him out. He chose rehab, got his act together and came home. He went to meetings, got a job. He was fun to be around again. Everyone thought he was okay until this past summer. Same thing, different day. But instead of rehab or begging for another chance, he just left. He left, and no one knows where he’s been for months.”

The heartbreak in Maddy’s voice put hot tears in Marc’s eyes.

Months.

“Fuck.” He blinked the tears away, then tucked Maddy close to his chest, acting on instinct. She clung to him without crying, and he tried not to tense up.

Marc knew the dangers of living on the streets better than anyone. He knew all of the different fates that could befall someone, especially an addict. He’d seen acquaintances overdose on bad shit. Seen them beaten up for what little they had on them, be it cash or dope. Seen them killed outright for standing on the wrong corner.

“How can I help?” Marc asked.

“I saw in the paper about your homeless shelter. It’s awesome that you do that.”

“Thanks, but Anthony’s never come to the shelter.” He wouldn’t have been admitted by Dave or Tate, even if he had. The shelter was for LGBT teenagers, not twenty-four-year-old former soccer stars. And no one brought drugs inside. “Why do you think he’d come back to Wilmington? Your family moved to Philadelphia not long after I lost touch.”

“It’s a guess. I’ve searched all over Philly. All of his old hangouts, his old friends. Dad even checked in with his detective buddy, and no one can find him there. Plus he talked about you a few times after the last rehab.”

And here Marc hadn’t thought anything else could surprise him today. “He did?”

“He wondered what you were doing, if you were okay. Said he owed you an apology, and part of staying sober was making amends. I figured searching here was worth a shot.”

Marc wasn’t sure how to respond to that. Anthony could be right around the block, shooting his own death up his arm, and Marc wanted to cry almost as much as he wanted to punch something. “If he came back to Wilmington, he’s never tried to make contact with me.”

“But don’t you know people? Someone who could help us find him?”

“I’m not sure.” Marc had more resources for this kind of thing than Maddy, but addicts weren’t quick to snitch on each other. Not unless money was involved, and Marc didn’t have a lot of spare twenties to flash in front of people for what would probably be worthless information.

One thought came to mind, though. An acquaintance who might be able to give him a lead.

Heather's Review

By this point, I feel like I should know that reading an AM Arthur book is going to be like turning on my 80s power ballads playlist. There are going to be all these emotions, I’m going to ugly cry more than once, but in the end, I’m going to feel like a new woman.
Come What May, the first book in the All Saints series, was emotional, but nothing like Say It Right. Marc and Anthony share a very tragic, painful past together as well as separately. One thing I completely respect AM Arthur for is not skirting around tough issues. It would’ve been easy for Marc to fall into the role of caretaker for Anthony, forgetting there was so much on the line for himself as well. But he didn’t. As much as he loved Anthony and wanted to help him, he wasn’t willing to put his own life on the line for his first love.
This is not an easy book to read. It’s going to make you hurt. It’s also worth pointing out that if you’re in the mood for a hot, steamy read, this isn’t the book you want to pick up. There’s not much sex, but that’s because there couldn’t be. That’s what I was saying about not taking the easy way out. It would’ve been easy if a good orgasm solved all their problems, but AM Arthur chose to write a beautiful story, not only about two men loving each other, but about two men trying to love themselves, first.

As the elevator door opened I saw Kenny and another waiter standing by the door, each carrying a large tray of dirty glassware.

“I don’t even know if he’s—” Kenny broke off as the door opened. His eyes widened when he saw me. He blushed. Kitchens can be capricious places. Maybe the last catering chef had discouraged talk among the waiters. I gave them both a nod and a smile and held the door open to show that it was fine with me. As long as the guests didn’t hear, what did I care what they talked about? Kenny was a good waiter. I made a mental note to have him on crew as often as possible.

I write contemporary gay romance. My characters are flawed and damaged adult men who may not even know they’re looking for true love, but when they meet their bershert, their true love, their lives are transformed. My stories are set in the real world where gay men have gay friends, families who do or don’t accept them, personal histories they’re not necessarily proud of and a myriad of experiences that have made them who they are.

I live in Northern Wisconsin with my Boston Terrier and Chicago spouse. I’ve published short stories, poetry, newspaper articles and academic papers and have worked in nearly every profession from restaurants to retail to open-water diving and now write m/m romance out of my fascination with love, courage and gender.

Relationship Troubles in Romance

Grand Opening is the fourth installment in the Kiss of Leather series, and as the name implies, the club is finally going to open to the public. Several additional events happen throughout the course of the story; relationships deepen, formal commitments are made and the mystery surrounding Corey’s kidnapping advances as new information is uncovered.

When I originally conceived the idea for the series, and had sketched out my three Doms who would own and operate Kiss of Leather, I’d intended for each of them to get their stories told in the first three books before I introduced other characters. But that silly muse… A side character sub (Marshall) demanded my attention, so the third book became about him.

Since one of the co-owners of the club, Josh, already had an existing committed sub, I’d intended for their story to be more of a prequel to show how they got together. However, as I worked on the first few books, that storyline didn’t take hold for me. I didn’t want to write it. What I really wanted to know was what happens to a committed D/s pair who live the lifestyle 24/7 when major changes occur in their day-to-day world. Something as big as starting a new business with friends, building it from the ground up over the course of two years when only one partner is involved – that would definitely impact the most stable and loving of relationships.

I can speak about this firsthand. I don’t have a romantic partner, but I do have good friends and kids. It’s taken a lot of long hours and hard work to build my author business, and many times, it’s been at the expense of socializing. The kids still come first – even though two are adults, they’ve had their own challenges over the last couple of years – but then that means that the friends really do drop down lower on the list. I can’t even imagine having a relationship right now, it would be massively unfair to anyone. That’s because my writing is not only my income, but it’s my passion.

Josh and David love each other very much. Neither one can imagine living life without the other. They’ve lived together in a successful and fulfilling 24/7, D/s relationship for five years. But Kiss of Leather is a demanding mistress, and gradually, Josh has let things slide. As David says in the book, how can he serve a Master who’s never there?

Not surprisingly, this story has a lot more angst in it. When I started to really sort through their real-life issues, it was gut-wrenching for me to go through their struggles with them. And because the men from Kiss of Leather are like family, the other men became involved in the quest to keep Josh and David’s relationship from falling apart. I hope you enjoy this latest installment, and if you haven’t started the series yet, I suggest you begin at the beginning. The underlying thread of mystery as well as the journey with each couple as they draw ever closer to the club opening will make a helluva lot more sense! J

excerpt

As he pulled on his black gloves, the buttery soft leather slipping on easily, the door knob to the office jiggled. A knock sounded. “Yes?” Josh twisted and stretched some more in his outfit. Yee gads. I’ll be walking around like Frankenstein all night. Thank God I’m not the one doing a demo.

“It’s me, Master.”

“Hold on, sweetheart.”

Josh padded over to let David in. He opened the door and gasped. David had obviously already changed into his club outfit in the members’ locker room. He’d wanted to surprise Josh and he’d certainly achieved his objective in quite a hot way.

David’s chest was covered in straps of shiny vinyl, placed asymmetrically across his torso, the glimpses of his creamy flesh a striking contrast to the black material. The light definition in his biceps was highlighted by the armless shirt. But it was the pair of vinyl shorty-shorts, silver studs lining the sides, and the fishnet stockings that’d caused Josh to react so strongly, his cock swelling against the restrictive leather of his own outfit.

“Turn around. Show me the back.” Josh’s tone had been soft, almost reverent.

David did as he was told, his delectable, round ass showcased to perfection. Josh allowed his gaze to travel down the length of David’s legs to the combat boots that boasted a thick, studded strap wrapped two times around the ankle. David completed the turn.

“Do you like it?”

Josh grunted. “Damn, sweetheart. You’re going to be the most gorgeous boy here tonight.

A sweet blush rose to David’s cheeks. Josh kissed the pink of his skin on either side of his face, then pressed his lips to the heavy, engraved sterling collar he’d placed on his boy’s neck well over a year before. He was charmed all over again by how beautiful and unaffected David was.

“Thank you, Master.”

David tipped his chin up, closing his kohl-lined eyes, and silently offered his lips. Josh gladly accepted, taking his mouth gently, but thoroughly. The scarlet lip tint David wore tasted of strawberries, his skin scented with a sugary vanilla.

Oh yes. I could eat him up right this minute.

House of the Rising Son by Trevann Rogers: Book Blast, Excerpt and Giveaway

August 16, 2016 by Denise

25808967synopsis

Sex. Rebellion. Rock and roll.

Cheyenne is a half-human incubus whose star is on the rise in the Unakite City rock scene. His father, the leader of the supernatural races, would prefer he keep a “low profile”, but screw that. Cheyenne has as much music in his veins as royal incubi blood.

Alexander’s future is all set—finish law school, join the family firm, and marry someone who’d be good for business. Not that he has a say in any of it. He’s barely met the woman his father expects him to marry.

As Cheyenne’s musical career takes off, his carefully constructed life begins to unravel, exacerbated by an ex-lover who can’t let go, a crotchety barkeeper with a dirty mind and a pure heart, a drag queen who moonlights as a nanny, and Alexander—who’s not sure if he’s falling for the incubus or the rocker.

Cheyenne denies who he is, while Alexander hides what he wants. Together, they learn that getting what they truly want means being who they truly are.

excerpt

Cheyenne reached the corner of 77th Street and looked up at Alexander’s building. He had a lobby and an elevator ride to figure out what to say. He didn’t let many people into his life, but the big guy had wandered in and taken a seat, and Cheyenne wasn’t going to let him go like this. He would find a way to help Alexander make sense of his life and be happy again.

When he let himself into the apartment, he found Alexander with a beer in hand, stretched out on the sofa, the darkness broken by the light of the television. Cheyenne retrieved a bottle from the refrigerator and sat in a chair next to him.

“Your door was open.”

Alexander shrugged. “Pretty sure I could handle an intruder.” He pointed at his chest. “Were-tiger.”

“Good point.” He felt Alexander’s eyes on him. “Who’s winning? And please tell me that was the right question to ask. I’m not much of a sports guy.” And spectacularly bad at small talk.

“It wasn’t a wrong one. The Raiders. And it’s DVR’d. They won.”housersbanner

Cheyenne nodded as if he had some idea what he was talking about. They sat in silence. When the game was over, Alexander turned on a lamp and powered off the TV. “Why are you here, Chey?”

“To make sure you’re all right. You didn’t seem to be when you left.”
Alexander swung his feet around to the floor. “No, I’m not all right. I just realized that my life is shit. Wait, no, I suspected it before. But at least getting married and being a lawyer, that life I understood. This life? I don’t have a clue.”

“Everybody’s life is shit, Zander. Okay, maybe not everybody’s. But everybody I know. Everybody who’s trying to live the life they want instead of what their parents, or society, or whoever, thinks it should be.”

“You’re telling me I’m in good company? Gee, thanks.”

Cheyenne scooted to the edge of the chair. “Look, if you’d been happy with your father’s plans, would you have been at the club night after night with me?”

Alexander looked away and raked his fingers through his hair.

“You knew there was something missing. You were out there searching for it.” At Alexander’s scowl, he continued, “Maybe you would have found it with a woman if you’d kept looking. But you didn’t, and your world shattered.”

“Think you’re all that? How I’m feeling, it isn’t about you.”

“The fuck it isn’t…”

Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less
