Like Real People Do (Breakaway Book 1) by E.L. Massey: Release Blitz, Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

August 29, 2022 by Denise

.                                         .

Nineteen-year-old hockey phenom Alexander Price is the youngest-ever captain in the NHL. With a polarizing social media presence and a predilection for dirty play, he typifies the stereotype of young, out-of-control athlete. But away from the cameras, Alex is a kid with an anxiety disorder and the expectations of an expansion franchise on his shoulders. And maybe he tries too hard to fit the part of asshole playboy, but it’s better than the alternative; in his line of work, gay is the punchline of an insult, not something he can be.

Eighteen-year-old vlogger Elijah Rodriguez is a freshman in college recovering from an injury that derailed his Olympic figure-skating dreams. Mixed-race, disabled, and out of the closet since he was fourteen, Eli is unapologetically himself. He has no qualms about voicing his disapproval of celebrity jocks who make homophobic jokes on Twitter and park their flashy cars in the handicapped spaces outside of ice rinks.

After an antagonistic introduction, Alex and Eli’s inexplicable friendship both baffles and charms the internet. But navigating relationships is hard enough for normal teenagers. It’s a lot harder when the world—much of it disapproving—is watching you fall in love with your best friend.

There are admittedly worse things in the world than having to walk two blocks on a Wednesday morning in July.

Eli knows from experience there are worse things in the world.

Like being diagnosed with epilepsy at sixteen.

Like having heat-induced seizures and living in Texas.

Objectively, he knows there are worse things, but right at this moment, he can’t think of many because it’s 6:00 a.m., and he isn’t allowed to have caffeine because they’ve changed his medication again, and he’s had to park in the visitor’s garage because the only two handicap spaces at the north entrance of the Houston Hell Hounds official practice facility had been occupied by one parallel-parked Land Rover decidedly lacking handicap tags.

“Motherfucking hockey players,” Eli says to the empty sidewalk.

So now he’s running late because it’d taken him an extra ten minutes to find the visitors’ lot, and he’d still needed to stop and let his dog pee before they entered the complex. Because being the disabled kid whose service dog pees in the rink on the first day of practice will guarantee he never has a collegiate social life to speak of. Not that he holds out particularly high hopes for that anyway.

The security guard at the door barely glances at his newly printed student ID before waving him to the left with a tired, “Rink Three, end of the hallway on your right.”

She looks like she could use some coffee too.

“Right. Thanks.” Eli shifts his backpack, sparing a last hateful glance at the Land Rover outside.

“Hey, do you happen to know whose car that is out front? License plate AP23?”

She lifts one eyebrow. “You mean Alexander Price?”

Because of course. Of course it was Alexander Price. Eli tries to avoid too much familiarity with the hockey world, but there are some things you just know if you spend enough time around ice, and one of those things is the name of the youngest current captain in the NHL, who is apparently just as much of a douche off the ice as tabloids would suggest.

Eli takes a steadying breath. “You know where I could find him?”

The security guard considers Eli’s expression, then the dog at his feet, then the ill-parked vehicle outside.

“I take it you don’t want an autograph?”

“No.”

She gives him an apologetic smile. “I don’t think I can have his car towed, but I can file a complaint if you’d like.”

“That would be great, thanks.”

He starts to move forward again before pausing. “Do you know if Jeff Cooper is back from IR?” he asks. He doesn’t make a habit of following hockey, but when he’s potentially in the same building as a gold-medal-winning, world-junior-figure-skater-turned-NHL-player, he’d like to know.

“Yeah. As of this week, he’s cleared to skate no-contact in practices.” She grins. “He also parks in the players’ lot like he’s supposed to.”

Eli would expect nothing less.

“They’re in practice for another hour and a half,” she adds. “But sometimes Cooper does the meet and greet afterward.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, Rink Two.” She nods to the right hallway. “Price will be there, too, but he almost never comes out afterward.”

“Shocking.”

The doors open behind him and an entirely too-awake girl wearing a hijab that matches her leggings waves at them both and hands over her student ID.

“Morning,” she says, careful not to run over Hawk’s tail with her rolling skate bag. “Your dog is beautiful.”

“Thanks,” Eli says. “Are you a freshman too?”

Which is a stupid question because he knows the rest of the figure skating team isn’t supposed to start practice for another week. Obviously, she’s there for freshman orientation just like he is.

“Yeah!” she says, apparently immune to his idiocy. “I’m Morgan. Just moved in last night. Thank god for coffee, right? I’m so nervous I didn’t sleep at all.”

“Right,” he agrees wryly. “I’m Eli.”

She gets her ID back from the security guard, and they start down the left hallway together.

“It’s so cool the Hell Hounds share their facilities with the university,” she says. “Did you know their practices are open to the public? I think I might go try to get an autograph or two later if we have time.”

“Yeah,” he says. “I might join you.”

What a fantastic read! E.L. Massey is a newly published author but I will definitely be looking for more from her. The characters in this book felt so real. With disability representation, as well as a mixed race character, these two have a little meet-cute (aka a bit antagonistic) at college.

Elijah is a vlogger and figure skater that suffers from epilepsy due to an accident.  Meanwhile, Alex is the youngest captain of an NHL team.

They begin a tentative friendship and it grows, while everyone watches online. It felt so realistic. There is a great cast of secondary characters with Cody, James, Jeff, and Kuzy.

The story was very well written, and had a good amount of realism. The pacing of the book kept me thoroughly engaged.

Overall, just a phenomenal story. And looking forward to the next in the series. I definitely recommend this one.

E.L. Massey is a human. Probably. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her partner, the best dog in the world (an unbiased assessment), and a frankly excessive collection of books. She spends her holidays climbing mountains and writing fan fiction, occasionally at the same time.

“It is what it is. I’m the one who keeps an eye on the old man. Scott won’t set foot back here. Which, to be honest, I’m fine with. Scott and I do not get along. But enough about me.” Wade looked back at Dutch. “What about you? What skeletons do you have in your closet?”

Dutch blinked, feeling the spotlight swing his direction. He’d had just enough beer to be sort of honest. “Oh, you know. Chaos, mayhem, anarchy, and a little destruction here and there…”

“The cousins of the four horsemen.” Foster snickered, not knowing how close to the truth Dutch had come. Luckily the waiter returned with their beers and two bowls of popcorn, and the conversation veered away from the past. Dutch breathed a sigh of relief. He didn’t even like thinking about his history, as if it might find its way back to him.

When their second beers were gone and the popcorn bowl empty, he and Foster both declined Wade’s offer to buy them a third. “I’m not the man I used to be.” “Dutch shook his head. “If I have another, I’ll need a ride home, and I need to be on my toes tomorrow.”

“Suit yourself,” Wade grumbled. “I’m gonna stay here a bit longer and drown my sorrows.”

“Dutch clapped him on the back as he scooted around to leave. “Take care. See you at work. Don’t let the raccoon sex get you down.”

“I keep promising myself I’ll quit.” Wade barked out a laugh. “Damn raccoons definitely have a better sex life than I do.”

Foster walked with Dutch to his car. “I never did find out your favorite band,” he complained. “Next time.”

“Definitely. My schedule is settling into something normal-ish, so just text me when you’re free.”

Dutch beeped his lock, watching Foster amble down the sidewalk to wherever he’d parked. Or maybe he’d walked here? Pulling onto the street, Dutch realized he was smiling. The evening had been fun. Even running into Wade had been fun. The squishy feeling in the center of his chest was a fledgling sense of belonging, and he wanted to keep it growing.”.

Tide To You (Destination Daddies Season Two) by JJ Harper: Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

August 16, 2022 by Denise

When a much-needed holiday turns into so much more than sun and sand.

Hudson

Why have I even entered that competition? I never win anything. Ever.

Colour me surprised I won a weeklong holiday in a resort for Daddies and boys. And at the right time too.

A break from work.

A break from bad choices.

A break from being seen only as a sugar Daddy.

The Hôtel Plaisir looks the perfect place to unwind, relax, and have some fun. Even more perfect is the beautiful young man waiting for me. He’s everything I’ve ever looked for. He’s also the host for the week, which makes him out of bounds.

Doesn’t it?

Yannick

The chance to organise my own event and prove to my father I can be trusted to run our family hotel landed in my hands thanks to Cuffd and their competition. The winner gets an all-inclusive week at our resort.

I didn’t expect him to be my dream Daddy.

I didn’t expect to hurt so much when he played with the other boys.

I didn’t expect to give myself to a man who will leave.

But it is too good to pass up. Even if it breaks my father’s trust.

Tide to You is part of the Destination Daddies Season Two multi-author series. It features an older, jaded Daddy and a boy who knows he has more to lose than his heart. Each book can be read as a standalone, but there are so many destinations and Daddies to discover, why not grab them all?

I can’t tear my eyes away from the erotic and compelling sight. Hudson looks up, his lips still on Roddie, but his eyes blaze and fix on me. I turn and flee the room, rush through the gardens, past the pools, and onto the beach.

I come to a halt, drawing long breaths into my lungs, then drop onto the still warm sand. I sit with my knees bent, my forearms resting on them, and stare out at the ocean. I love it here. Even as a child, I would sneak out to listen to the soft swell of the water as it broke on the shore. It calms me, even though I know the current is treacherous, that under the smooth surface, the undertow could take you away before you’re even aware. I lie back and gaze up at the stars. The sky seems to be so full of them tonight, each shining as dazzlingly as it can. The brilliant, almost full moon casts a silver glow over all it touches.

My anxiety slips away. I’m in no hurry to go. I have nothing I need to be doing. The twinkling stars and the gentle laps of the water on the sand soothe me. My mind empties.

A cool wind picks up, and goosebumps break out over my skin. Time to go inside. I’ve got a busy day tomorrow.

After brushing as much sand as I can from my clothes, I stroll back to the hotel. On the terrace, a solitary figure walks towards the rooms. The moonlight lights up his silver hair. Hudson.

He’s alone. Where is Roddie? I thought they would be spending the night together, for sure. My heart lifts a little, knowing he isn’t wrapping his strong arms around another body tonight. I go through the private door, a small smile on my lips.

After my shower, as I lie in my bed, the smile is still there. Sleep comes quickly.

This book is part of a multi-author series, Destination Daddies, Season Two, where the winners of a contest on the Cuffd app receive a weeklong vacation in resorts around the world. I love the premise behind this, and did read a few of the books from Season One. Men meeting other men with the same wants and needs, Daddy/boy.

This one is based around a business owner and architect from the UK, choosing his holiday in Southern France, where he meets and falls in love with the part owner of a luxury hotel that caters to many special weekends, one of them being a Daddy/boy weekend.

One of the best things about this is that it isn’t just about what Hudson and Yannick are looking for, but also the friendships they develop with the other Daddies and boys through the week. As in, I am definitely curious to see if any of those characters make another appearance in the future. 🙂

This book had insta-love, with both men realizing what they wanted within two days of Hudson arriving at the hotel, and they never really questioned it. There was no back and forth, does he love me or not. They knew almost immediately that they had found their other person, and it was left to them to figure out how to make it work with the two of them having successful businesses in two entirely different countries.

Along the way, we learn a little bit about the actual fathers that Yannick had, and how they both lived their lives somewhat neglecting Yannick. I was slightly confused during the early parts of the book, as it seemed that the father (Thomas) Yannick lived with was stern, but still loved him. Later it turns out that the absent father is the one Yannick is able to turn to when he’s struggling with Thomas about running the hotel. There was also one other piece that I didn’t quite understand why it wasn’t presented a bit earlier in the book, as I felt it was key to understanding why Yannick felt so passionate about the hotel.

Yannick and Hudson, despite their 20+ year age difference, had a lot in common, and seemed to fit right from the beginning. Although days one and two were…a bit difficult for Yannick to see, they did find their way into each other’s arms, dealt with the absent father, and his unpleasant husband, and decided how to move forward with their HEA.

A good beach read, especially with the beach being so prominent in the story. 🙂 Sit back and enjoy the silver fox, and his sweet boy.

Horribly Harry by Lisa Henry & Sarah Honey: RB, Excerpt, New Release Review and Giveaway

August 15, 2022 by Denise

.                                  .

Bad Boyfriend, Inc—when you can’t find a good boyfriend, why not hire a bad one instead?

To supplement his income while he’s completing his Early Education degree, Harry Townsend hires himself out as a terrible date—for a set fee, he’ll horrify parents and family members in all sorts of interesting ways. But when it comes to actual relationships—and sex—Harry doesn’t get the appeal. He doesn’t get the same tingly feelings everyone else seems to when they meet someone attractive, and he’s fine with that. He’d rather spend his evenings watching TV anyway.

Jack Windsor abandoned his uni degree to do an apprenticeship as a mechanic, much to his parents’ dismay. He’s happy with his choices, but leaving uni meant losing his accommodation, and now he’s crashing on his sister Mia’s couch. It isn’t ideal, but it’s only until he finds something else—which is proving difficult in Sydney’s brutal rental market.

When Jack almost kills Harry with a strawberry smoothie, he discovers that not only was Harry’s disastrous date with Mia a set up, but that Harry is looking for a roommate. Moving in with Harry is great, if only he wasn’t so distractingly cute—and totally uninterested in Jack. Except as they grow closer as friends, for the first time in his life, Harry tells Jack he’s developing feelings for him—tingly ones.

But how can Harry and Jack be together when Jack’s family thinks that Harry is the worst human being in the universe? And how can Jack convince them that his Bad Boyfriend is the best boyfriend he’s ever had, without admitting that Mia hired him to be terrible to them? When an approaching family event brings everything to a head, Jack’s going to have to step up to prove to Harry that he wants him in his life. And it might just take some bad timing, some good luck and the ugliest suit known to mankind.

“Hello, Beryl,” Harry said through clenched teeth as he slid the garish Hawaiian shirt onto the counter.

Beryl narrowed her one good eye at him. “Mr Townsend. I believe you’re banned from this shop.”

Harry stared her down as he lifted his chin. “No. I spoke to Agnes, and she said that you’re not in charge so you can’t ban anyone. And she said, ‘looking at someone funny’ wasn’t grounds for a ban anyway.”

A flicker of fear passed through her good eye and, he thought, something almost like admiration, too. She clearly never would have thought he’d have the balls to go above her head to Agnes, but she’d underestimated him and his need for this incredibly ugly Hawaiian shirt. It was blue, with a typical background of islands and boats and palm trees and flowers, but what made it truly terrible was that, at one time, it had been someone’s custom gag gift. Harry had no idea whose grinning face it was that had been printed all over the fabric, but the second he’d seen it hanging in the slightly grimy front window of the Newtown Op Shop, he’d known he had to have it. The guy on the shirt had a combover. It was perfect!

Beryl’s mouth pressed into a thin, wrinkled line as she tugged the shirt over and inspected the tag. “Twenty dollars,” she announced.

“It says five.”

Beryl reached up and adjusted her not-even-close-to-flesh-coloured eyepatch. She told people she’d recently had cataract surgery, but Harry suspected she was hiding an evil eye. The sort that would melt people’s faces off if she looked at them. “Agnes might be the manager, but I’m in charge of pricing, and this shirt is twenty dollars.”

She picked up a pen from the jar beside the cash register and changed the price.

“I need that shirt!”

Her sour mouth turned up in a grin. “And you can have it, for twenty dollars.” She tapped the handwritten sign taped to the side of the register—No arguing with staff.

“That sign wasn’t there last week.”

Beryl’s grin widened. “I wrote it when I saw you at the door.”

Harry gasped. “But I really need that shirt, Beryl! Please!”

She unpeeled the sign from the register, wrote Or begging on it, then stuck it back up.

Harry drew a deep breath, then wished he hadn’t, because, like all op shops, this one smelled musty and weird. He pulled his wallet out of the pocket of his jeans. It was depressingly thin. He tugged out a twenty, watching Beryl’s eye light up with victory, then hummed and put it back. “Actually, I think I’ll save my money.”

Beryl glowered at him.

“Yeah,” Harry said, even though she hadn’t asked him anything. “I came past the bakery on the way here, and they were just icing the coffee scrolls. I might have to buy a couple. They’re so good. They always sell out really quickly, don’t they? Like, there probably won’t be any left at all in about twenty minutes, once word gets out on the street.”

Beryl’s sweet tooth was legendary, and it was the only sweet thing about her. She looked at her watch.

“Oh, well,” Harry said. “I guess I’ll just…browse some more. Maybe find something in my price range.”

He stared at her and she stared back at him.

He sighed. “It’ll probably take me a while. A good, long while.”

Beryl vibrated with murderous rage.

Four minutes later and five dollars poorer, he was stepping outside the op shop with the ugly Hawaiian shirt in his backpack.

When he wore it, it was going to feel like victory.

* * * *

Harry met Angie Lau outside the old geology building where she was sitting with a group of friends. She was short and button-nosed, and wearing a bright pink sweater with a cat on it. Harry was tempted to show her his amazingly ugly Hawaiian shirt, then thought he’d better not, just in case she wasn’t wearing the sweater ironically.

“Hi, I’m Harry.”

Angie’s friends looked him up and down speculatively. Angie sighed and shoved her lunch containers into a tote bag before climbing to her feet. “I’m Angie. Let’s go talk over here.”

Harry walked with her to the shade of a large tree. “When we talked on the phone, you said you were interested in a lunch date? With your parents, right?”

Angie chewed on her bottom lip and bobbed her head in a nod.

“Tell me about them,” he suggested. “What are you looking for out of this? Do you have a boyfriend they don’t approve of?”

Her eyes grew large. “No! I don’t have a boyfriend. I don’t want a boyfriend. I want to do my Master’s, but my dad is super old-fashioned and thinks that if I study any more my womb will shrivel up and fall out, and my mum agrees with him, and last week we were arguing and I said I was sick of them trying to set me up with every nice Chinese boy they meet, and Mum said that wasn’t true, and they’d be happy with literally any boy I dated, as long as I found one.” She stopped at last and drew a breath. “I’m babbling, aren’t I?”

“It’s fine,” Harry assured her. “So you want to test that theory?”

Angie rolled her eyes. “It’s so stupid! But they’re driving me nuts, and my friend Anna said she knew this girl who hired this fake boyfriend who was a theatre kid, and…” She shrugged. “And here I am.”

“That would be Ambrose,” he said. “I took over from him. Okay, so basically you want to turn up to lunch with a boyfriend who is so awful they’ll be happier you’re single, right?”

She flashed him an anxious smile. “Right.”

“Okay,” he said. “So, the deal is, you pay for my lunch and also my fee on top of that. I have like a sliding scale thing, depending on how big you want me to go, or if I have to get anyone else involved.”

Her brow crinkled. “Anyone else?”

“Yeah, for an extra fifty my housemate will turn up and say he’s my parole officer and remind me that I can’t be within two hundred metres of a school.”

Angie’s eyes grew even larger.

“For an extra hundred, he’ll pretend to be a detective and arrest me on a warrant.”

“Oh, wow. I don’t think any of that is necessary.”

“Okay, then. What flavour of awful did you want? Ambrose specialised in ‘hot but an asshole’ but, well”—Harry gestured to his distinctly un-muscled physique—“I’m built in a way that lends itself more towards awkwardly terrible. Bad clothes, bad past, ‘society’s out to get me’ kind of thing. Would you prefer me to be unemployed, or working at something really questionable?”

Angie gave a grin that was ever so slightly evil. “Definitely unemployed. And if you could turn up late and drunk, that’d be ideal.”

“Easy done.” Harry nodded. “I do a great sloppy drunk. Now, let’s talk rates.”

I did not read the first book in this series…although I am seriously wondering how I missed it. However, I didn’t feel that I missed anything. This book was definitely stand alone. I’ve read a few books by Lisa Henry so I had no illusions that I wouldn’t enjoy this one, even without having read anything by Sarah Honey.

I loved the concept of having someone get paid to be a bad date, to scare the parents in some way. That was fun, and set poor Harry up for quite a challenge once he met Jack, the brother of a recent “bad date” that ended in the father having water poured on his head.

Harry was super sweet. He had never had any interest in dating anyone for real, no matter the gender, and wasn’t interested in sex at all, until he met Jack. This was a great representation of ace/demisexual. Harry truly needed that connection with Jack in order to want any sort of relationship, sexual or otherwise with him. And there was never any rush to sex with them. They could cuddle, kiss, and then sleep. They took everything very slow, which was exactly what Harry needed.

Jack had his own issues with having disappointed his parents by dropping out of uni to become a mechanic, and couch surfing  until he ended up on his sister’s couch. Moving in with Harry and Tristan was great for everyone. Jack liked to cook and clean, Harry and Tristan had no idea how to do it. Jack did as much as he could just to make Harry happy.

The humor in this book was at times subtle, at times laugh out loud. (I read some of this on a plane, and still I’m sure some people heard me laughing over the noise of the plane). The stops at the op shop, seeing Beryl, with the eye patch…I loved those scenes (read the excerpt above for the first of several of those encounters with Beryl)…the peacock suit, etc. The inner monologue of Harry was so hilarious. He was just so clueless when it came to so many things, especially with a romantic relationship, and the thoughts running through his head, just made me laugh. Here are two examples of his inner monologue that kept me laughing.

Harry ordered duck, because that seemed safer than snails. He wondered who first saw a snail and decided it looked like it needed to be drenched in garlic and butter, because it was one of the worst ideas he’d ever heard.

He wondered if he was meant to wait half an hour after eating to have sex. No, wait. That was swimming.

Secondary character, Tristan is the next book, and is set up quite well in the second to last chapter. He’s a man slut, 100%, with a different man every night. But you still love him from his interactions with his “puppies”. *Do not miss reading the first part of Tristan’s book at the end of Horribly Harry, Terribly Tristan.

All in all, a sweet romance, laugh out loud funny, and set in Sydney, Australia, all things that I want to read.

Lisa Henry

Lisa likes to tell stories, mostly with hot guys and happily ever afters.

Lisa lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia. She doesn’t know why, because she hates the heat, but she suspects she’s too lazy to move. She spends half her time slaving away as a government minion, and the other half plotting her escape.

She attended university at sixteen, not because she was a child prodigy or anything, but because of a mix-up between international school systems early in life. She studied History and English, neither of them very thoroughly.

Lisa has been published since 2012, and was a LAMBDA finalist for her quirky, awkward coming-of-age romance Adulting 101, and a Rainbow Awards finalist for 2019’s Anhaga.

Sarah Honey

Sarah started life in New Zealand. She came to Australia for a working holiday, loved it, and never left. She lives in Western Australia with her partner, two cats, two dogs and a life-size replica TARDIS.

She spends half her time at a day job and the rest of her time reading and writing about clueless men falling in love.

Her proudest achievements include having adult kids who will still be seen with her in public, the ability to make a decent sourdough loaf, and knowing all the words to Bohemian Rhapsody.

Awfully Ambrose will be her fifth published novel in collaboration with Lisa Henry.

Wei

As the new music professor at Korham University, I need to focus on my job. I can’t get entangled with that tall and handsome Facilities Manager who I keep bumping into on campus. Did we have a hot moment together at Christmas? Maybe, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s taking my music lecture. Students are off limits, no matter how flirty and sexy they are.

The problem is that Logan’s not just a student; we’re co-faculty, neighbors, and we’ve become good friends. I’ve started to peel back the layers that make up who he really is. It turns out there’s more to this sweet guy whom I’ve been growing closer and closer to. As the semester winds down, the days of him being my student are numbered. Pretty soon, nothing will stand in the away of us hooking up. It’s scary, but can an athlete like him really fall for a performing artist like me? Because I’m afraid I’m already there.

Logan

I’ve been broken for a long time, so I make my job at KU my life. No one has been able to tug on my heartstrings for years. So of course I’m blindsided by this talented and gorgeous new professor I meet. He makes me smile and gives me something to look forward to for the first time in so long. The one catch: I’m taking his intro to music class.

That’s fine by me, I can push down these feelings. I can totally ignore the blazing hot chemistry Wei and I have in the tiny practice rooms while he teaches me scales. But as the semester goes on, I realize he can offer me so much more than just a pretty face; it’s possible that everything I lost all those years ago exist in Wei. When he plays a song, or whenever it’s just the two of us, it feels just like magic.

I refuse to make a move on my professor, even though we’re both faculty. Good things come to those who wait, right? I just have to not let him realize I have a massive crush on him and not let him kiss me…again. And again.

The Strings We Play is a low-angst, male/male romance about two working adults. It involves music lessons, workout sessions, kissing under the stars, soccer-themed birthday cakes, and discovering the love that only a found-family can bring, HEA guaranteed. It is the third book in the Artists and Athletes series but can be read as a standalone.

The next Saturday afternoon, my sister is kind enough to drop me off at the KU Athletics Center. I’m dressed in my suit and tie, and my black hair is expertly styled in spikes in all the right places. I’m super early, but I want to get in some practice time at the stage setup since every keyboard feels different.

As I wander into the large complex, I notice lots of Christmas decorations, but no staff. The rest of the catering company won’t be here for another hour. I walk past one corridor, unaware of how to get into the events space where I presume the formal will take place. Eventually, I come upon one open door to a room where I hope to find at least one staff member.

Peering in, I spot something that takes my breath away: a tall man with brown hair is putting on a white button-down shirt over his naked torso. I swear, time slows down as he shucks it on, unaware I’m standing there. I don’t want to ogle, but his body is magnificent. He’s got tuffs of chest hair—a genetic trait I never got—and miles of muscle coursing over his six-feet=something stature.

My mouth goes dry, but I finally shake my head in an effort to speak. “Um…excuse me?” He turns to look at me, finally buttoning up his shirt. He looks to be about my age, and his brown eyes and chiseled jaw are all gorgeous. Clearly, my gay ass needs to get laid. “I’m looking for the music department?”

The tall guy just stares at me, hands frozen, allowing me a glimpse of his perfect chest for a few moments more. He opens his mouth, but no noise comes out. Weird.

“Wei!” I turn to see Professor Reyes down the hall from this guy’s office. She’s standing in front of an elevator and waving me down. I turn back to the hot guy who is still giving me deer-in-the-headlights eyes and nod at him.

“Never mind. I got it,” I mutter, turning away from his handsome face. I don’t know who he is, but he just became a potential work-related perk here at KU.

Okay, so I’m coming into this one smack in the middle of a series but I didn’t feel like it took anything away from the flow of the story, so I don’t guess they have to be read in any particular order? Anyway, in this one, we have Wei and Logan.

Logan, I wasn’t sure about in the beginning. He wasn’t very likable to me. He went from an overconfident dude bro to an overzealous fan-girl any time he was around Wei, and I thought it was kind of cute, though the dude bro kinda became silly after realizing how he really felt by his inner dialogue.

Both men are as opposite as night and day and I love that about them. I love the opposites attract thing, especially, like these two, the power dynamic and coupling aren’t the way you’d stereotypically think of them. I love that too! These two feel like a real couple to me.

Plus, I’m such a sucker for a good dad figure, or in this case, an uncle. It’s what sucked me in!

Overall, very cute story.

CD Rachels has been coming up with stories since he was little. At first it was all about superheroes and pocket monsters, but his genre of choice has expanded since puberty.

He’s been consuming young adult gay fiction since he was a teen, but within the past five years moved up to the big leagues of gay adult romance. In 2020 during quarantine, he burned through more male/male romance books than he ever had in the previous 29 years combined.

He lives in New York City with the love of his life and works in health insurance. When he’s not reading and writing, he’s playing board games and practicing music. He is honored to become a self-published author, and if you’re reading this, your support means so much to him that it’s giving him a tingly feeling (in a good way).

The Professor’s Date by Lane Hayes: Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt, and Giveaway

August 8, 2022 by Denise

.                                 .

The professor, the hair stylist, and a wedding date…

Tommy

Help! My sister is getting married and according to her, I need a date. And a makeover. I’m a busy man, though. I don’t have time to meet eligible bachelors, and the tape holding my glasses together works just fine. Until my hair stylist steps on them.

Yes, Noah, my dazzling dreamboat of a hair guru created a mini-disaster, but I don’t mind at all. He’s a sweet, funny, kind jock who—

Screech! No jocks. I have nothing in common with sporty people.

Except…Noah is different.

Noah

I don’t date. However, I’m not opposed to offering fashion advice to a sexy professor in need. A haircut, a quick shopping expedition…

Boom! Mission accomplished.

Not so fast. I’ve misjudged the situation and my attraction to the geek with the tragic sense of style. Sure, Thomas is too smart for me by a long shot, but there’s something about him that makes it easy to forget my past. It might be his quietly commanding nature or his movie-star good looks. Or maybe it’s just him.

All I know is that I’m very tempted to be the professor’s date.

The Professor’s Date is an MM geek/jock romance featuring a nerdy professor, a soccer-playing hair stylist, and a quest for the perfect date!

“My plan was to take you to a couple of my favorite places, all within walking distance of this one. You probably need a few button-down shirts, trousers, a nice sports coat, right?”

“Um, yes.”

“And maybe a belt and socks too. How are you doing on underwear?” he asked casually. As if it was no big deal to talk about underwear on a busy street in West Hollywood.

Okay, maybe it wasn’t, but I cast a quick glance to my left and right because this was my underwear we were talking about.

“Fine, thank you,” I whispered tersely.

Noah grinned, suddenly seeming more at ease as he stepped toward the store’s entrance. “If you say so, but they sell delicious unmentionables at Harrisons’.”

“Delicious?”

“Yes. Soft cotton that doesn’t bunch around your balls or get stuck in your crack.” His matter-of-fact delivery contrasted with the mischievous glint in his eyes.

I chuckled in spite of myself. “Well, okay. I prefer boxer briefs, if you must know.”

“Me too. Follow me, sir.”

Noah held the door open with a flourish, leading me through the athletic gear and sporting equipment sections to the clothing department. He bypassed the basic tees and made a beeline to a wall filled with men’s underwear, then struck a Vanna White pose.

“Color preference?”

“Black, white, or gray.”

He tsked. “Oh, that’s a tad boring.”

“I don’t need my boxers to be exciting,” I said primly.

“Oh, honey, yes, you do. We all do.”

And there he was again. The slightly sassy and flirtatious man who threw casual endearments like beads at a Mardi Gras parade. I took that as a sign that he felt comfortable with me, though I’d admit I didn’t understand his initial hesitation.

Did I make him nervous? Was that even possible? He seemed so confident, and I wasn’t exactly the mysterious or dangerous type. The only time I incited anxiety was when I assigned pop quizzes on top of lab work to my freshman students.

Lane Hayes loves a good romance! An avid reader from an early age, she has always been drawn to well-told love story with beautifully written characters. Her debut novel was a 2013 Rainbow Award finalist and subsequent books have received Honorable Mentions, and were winners in the 2016, 2017, 2018-2019, and 2020-2021 Rainbow Awards. She loves red wine, chocolate and travel (in no particular order). Lane lives in Southern California with her amazing husband in a not quite empty nest.

Whit by Cora RoseNew release and review!Whit by Cora Rose was my first book by her and I believe her first book. And I was really impressed. It's not easy to find a first book that I don't nit pick. But I really enjoyed it and she has been quite the prolific writer since.Caleb is the same story told from Whit's point of view. (Whit was Caleb's point of view)This is a good young adult (21ish) romance, opposites attract, gay for you, rich boy/poor boy...all the tropes. It was fun to read the story from Whit's POV. How he was really feeling about Caleb, about meeting family, about dealing with his own family, etc. And to hear how dirty his mind really was since he's so buttoned up (figuratively) to the world.I loved seeing Caleb's family just immediately accept him as part of the family. Jokes, hugs and all.If you enjoyed Whit, you'll enjoy Caleb. Same story, different perspectives.Do I need all of her books to have this companion piece? Nah. But I'm glad I revisited these guys.4 Pieces of Eye Candy ... See MoreSee Less

✨EXCERPT: CALEB by @coraroseauthor releasing April 24th! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/4En91A I shake my head, even though it is. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my body. The choice I have to make. Is it even a choice? “I…I overreacted. I’m…I’ll be fine,” I tell him, clutching at his hand and turning it to kiss that rough palm. Because I have to be fine with whatever I choose. And I don’t know if I can choose a future with him. Not after everything I’ve been through. My parents owe me for what they put me through. I’ve earned it with my blood and tears. Can I give it all up? For him? Caleb’s thumbs rub over my cheeks. “Okay.” He doesn’t sound convinced. Not that I expect him to. I’m a liar in the worst way. Selfish, thoughtless. He will never forgive me once this is over. My eyes water, and Caleb’s face crumples as he pulls me into his chest and holds me. I should never have let him be my roommate. I should have let him go about his life, never knowing me. It would have been simpler, better. But I was too greedy. Wanted him too much. And now look what I’ve done. I’m set to ruin him. I need to pull away before I do more damage. I need to end this. Soon, I tell myself. Just one more day. Let me have one more day.#mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less
