Dirty Job: Dirty Deeds: Book Two by TA Moore: Blog Tour, Exclusive Guest Post and Giveaway

July 8, 2022 by Denise

.                          .

All Grade Pulaski wanted was a quiet life, a few low-profile murders to clean up after, and his hometown in the rear view as he headed back to LA. Simple, attainable goals. All he had to do was keep his nose down and everyone else’s hands clean…as far as the law was concerned…and he’d been able to show Sweeny his heels sooner rather than later.

Problem was that Grade’s ‘thing’ with local mob boss Clay Traynor—currently somewhere between a one-night stand and a bad idea—was a lot of things, but it wasn’t quiet or simple.

For example, Judge Charity Parker was the last person in Sweeny who needed to know Grade’s name. Yet here he was in her basement after midnight, cleaning up a mess that could derail a couple of political careers in one fell swoop. All because Clay owed Judge Parker a favor… or three.

Grade should have known better than to go along with it. Amateurs always made a job messy, and politicians didn’t have a grateful bone in their bodies. Now the only chance he had of seeing LA again meant he had to break his professional code of conduct.

He needed to get his client caught.

Title: Dirty Job: Book 2 in the Dirty Deeds series

Hi everyone!

Thanks for letting me pop in to talk about my latest book, Dirty Job, which comes out on July 5. This is the second book in the Dirty Deeds trilogy, and I had a lot of fun with it! It’s available online – https://books2read.com/DirtyJob – and I hope you like it! There’s a third book in the works, after all!

If you want a ‘taste’ of the Dirty Deeds world, I thought I’d talk a little bit about where it came from. Which is, of course, me.

People have been surprised before when they meet me because I’m quite pleasant and a bit daft. ‘You seem,’ they say with surprise, ‘so nice.’ Because what I write isn’t always. The thing is, I grew up in Northern Ireland in the dog days of the Troubles, I worked in the charity and voluntary sector over here for years before I was published. What I write? Could be a lot worse.

And that isn’t to imply that I am, in any sense of the word, a hardcase or tough or even brave. I’m a coward. My only instinct in a difficult situation is flight or tea. However, I’ve met people who are hard and dangerous and who told me stuff about the things they’d done that made me moderately worried I was now somehow implicated.

There is nothing like sitting in an office talking to a man who’s just served his time for murder while he tries to jog your memory about why he went down. “Ah, g’wan, you’ll have heard of me.” But I digress.

I’m also a bit like Grade in that I know how easy it is to become desensitized to terrible things. I worked for a documentary company, and I remember going into the BBC archives and looking through old footage from the Troubles. At first, you’re horrified and uncomfortable in the way that watching someone else’s worst day can make you, but that doesn’t last. This is your job, so you have to keep looking, and eventually, disgust turns into ‘Wait! That segment there with the blood spray up the walls? I want that. That’s perfect’.

I also worked on a documentary series about a coroner, and it was fascinating how detached he was from the bodies. Everyone differs, of course, but I don’t see how you could be anything else and do that job. If you saw the corpse as a person, how could you peel their face off? Which they do. It’s quite noisy.

There’s a detachment that comes from any violent occupation—legal or not. Because the human body, the human mind, is built to adapt to its environment. The first time someone does something gross or awful, something that crosses that moral event horizon, the aversive reaction is going to hit hard. Because socially, we’ve been conditioned to ‘not do this,’ whatever it is. If you keep doing it, though? Your body gives up on that because it obviously isn’t working.

Most of the crooks that I crossed paths with? They weren’t particularly sorry. Some of them were proud of what they’d done, some joked about it, and others just thought it had been a day’s work. They had no plans to re-offend, but they’d not had the scales drop from their eyes to see what awful things they’d done. It had just been a day in the office for them.

Just like it is for Grade.

Hex Work by TA Moore: Blog Tour, Exclusive Guest Post, Excerpt and Giveaway

November 24, 2021 by Denise

My name is Jonah Carrow, and it’s been 300 days since I laid a hex.

OK, Jonah Carrow isn’t actually an alcoholic. But there’s no support group of lapsed hex-slingers in Jerusalem, so he’s got to make do. He goes for the bad coffee and the reminder that he just has to take normal one day at a time.

Unfortunately, his past isn’t willing to go down without a fight.

A chance encounter with a desperate Deborah Seddon, and a warning that ‘they’re watching’, pulls Jonah back into the world he’d tried to leave behind. Now he has to navigate ghosts, curses, and the hottest bad idea warlock he’s ever met…all without a single hex to his name.

But nobody ever said normal was easy. Not to Jonah anyhow.

Hi! Can you believe it’s November already? I feel entirely adrift in the calendar these days. It’s 1934th of March! One thing I have managed to keep on track for, more or less, is the whole publication schedule for Hex Work…more or less!

Hex Work is NOT the book I was meant to be writing, but it’s the one that wanted to come out of my head. So I hope people like it in order to make the absolute shambles it made of my writing schedule worth it. I like it, so I guess that’s a good start!

Thanks for having me and I hope you enjoy the exclusive short story prequel to the Hex Work novella!

Stories of Babylon – Chapter Three

Wife growled at him. Jonah reached down to gently tug her ears and settle her down.

“That’s what I want to know,” he said. “Sorry about this.”

John opened his mouth to ask why and Jonah stuck his finger in his mouth. It felt like a corpse, clammy and dry and slack. Before John could react Jonah dug his finger down into the stiff flesh of the tongue.

“A nail, a thorn, and a splinter,” Jonah rattled off. “Fear not, the Lord take us home before winter.”

He pulled his hand back and absently wiped it on his coat. Ghosts didn’t have spit, or germs, but hags could be another story. Cut the last threads that kept this one tied to John’s identity—his name, his life, his favourite food—and that’s what John would be. Or already was, even if he didn’t remember just yet.

John stood there, his chalky face slack and almost peaceful. The way he’d look in the coffin, once his face had been rebuilt by the mortician.

“Time to go home, Johnny,” Jonah said. “Your dad is waiting. Come on. I’ll give you a lift.”

Johnny stroked Lot’s head as they drove. Lot leaned into the hex-reinforced touch and panted happily, while Wife disapproved from the back seat. She was a one ghost sort of dog.

Home wasn’t the neat, ranch-style house on the outskirts of town, with a basketball hoop mounted on the garage that already felt poignant. It wasn’t the undertakers either, where John’s body was laid out in a suit his parents had bought just to bury him in.

Those were for the living.

Home, now, was the caster who’d made John.

John and the Woman in White hag who’d killed him, and maimed five other teenagers dumb enough to answer a knock at the door after dark. Three boys, two girls – too young, dumb, and horny to know better. It had been bad enough that someone came to the Carrow house to pay far, far too much for a basket of odd eggs from Gran’s hobby chickens.

It was bad luck to ask for money to cast a hex, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t a price. People in Babylon knew that. It was a lot cheaper to pay a grand for a basket of eggs than let Esther Carrow decide what she was owed.

Of course, once the money was in her pocket Gran was free to solve the problem how she saw fit. Which at the moment, while she was hobbled by gout, meant she subcontracted it to Jonah.

On your left, on your left, Johnny whispered suddenly. He had thinned out as they got further away from the site of the accident, just an outline of chalk and shreds of smoke.

Jonah was going to have to have the Plymouth cleaned when this was over.

He turned left onto the hard-packed, dirt Zoba Road and slowed down. Just in case he flicked the headlights off and rolled along in the dark. Lot whined, a thin noise, and lifted his head from John’s lap. There was a patch of chalk dust white on his chin and when he pricked his ears they passed through John’s fingers.

I don’t like scary movies, John said. His voice was strained and brittle as the hexes pulled at him. The faded imprints of the original conversations he was cannibalizing for this plea painted the edges of the words, reluctance and impatience and a general good nature. I’ll do it later.

Jonah thought about it for a second, but he had what he needed from John. He reached into the inner pocket of his coat with one hand, the other braced against the steering wheel to keep the car steady. The spool of thread he pulled out was almost finished. He made a mental note to rewind it from Gran’s sewing box when he got home.

Shiftless by TA Moore: Blog Tour, Exclusive Short Story Excerpt, and Giveaway

June 16, 2021 by Denise

Night Shift is the city’s thin, silver line- and some nights it’s thinner than others.

It isn’t the fact he almost died last night that’s thrown Night Shift officer Kit Marlow. He’s used to that. It’s the fact that instead of a werewolf trying to rip his throat out, it was his friend and colleague who tried to put him in the ground.

Well, ‘friend.’

Now Marlow’s been framed for a murder he didn’t commit by a man who’s committed more than his fair share. Half the cops in San Diego want to see Marlow behind bars for what he’s supposedly done, and the other half want him dead before he can tell his side of the story. The problem is that he can’t tell them apart.

There’s only one person in town that Marlow can trust, even though he knows he shouldn’t drag Cade Deacon into his problems. The sharp-tongued CEO of a private security firm might have gotten close to Marlow over the last few weeks, but taking on the SDPD is a lot to ask.

Marlow doesn’t have much choice, though. If he can’t clear his name before the last full moon of the month sets, he might not see another one. That’d be a shame since Marlow would really like to spend the night with Cade without needing protective gear.

Book 1: Shift Work

Book 2: Split Shift

First of all, thank you so much for having me! I’m thrilled to be here with my new release, Shiftless by TA Moore, which completes the Night Shift trilogy! I believe it is still technically a novella, although it’s the novella that kicked the other novellas out of the nest and ate all the food!

For the blog tour I’ve written a short story set in the Night Shift world. I hope you enjoy!

Chapter Four

It was a re-run.

Half the programs Marlow had TiVo’d were re-runs. There wasn’t a lot of downtime when you were on the Night Shift or training to get into the academy. Marlow had missed a lot of must-see programming over the years. Some of it was just comfort food, though—old enough that the last time anyone had talked about it around the water-cooler, it had been weekly.

This month it was Quincy. He’d watched it the first time around with his grandmother—probably, he couldn’t remember it, but she’d never missed an episode—and there was something comforting about how simple life was on the show. Murders happened, sure, but if Quincy didn’t solve them with his coroner’s experience, he’d sniff out the killer on the full moon.

Handy trick that.

Marlow sprawled back in the bed and watched the flannel-faced detective scowl intently over a slide before he raced off to save the day. Despite the soporific effect of sentimentality, Marlow’s brain wouldn’t shut off.

He wanted to be wrong.

For a good six months, every time he felt uneasy about a call Piper made or didn’t make, he’d told himself he was wrong. Of course he was. They were Night Shift, the good guys of a hundred stories. Piper was a goddamn legend, a literal poster boy for the department.

Except… he wasn’t.

His phone buzzed next to the bed. He grabbed it in case it was Gil—he might not be scheduled to work, but he was still on call every night until the moon waned—but Bennett’s name was stamped over the text notification.

Marlow flicked it open.

Why were you at the Crate? I told you to let it go. It’s not your problem.

Marlow really wished that was true, too. He set the phone back on the bedside table without answering Bennett and flicked the TV off. It hadn’t been Gil that time, but if she did call him in, he’d rather have gotten some sleep.

By rights, it should have taken him half the night to grab some shut-eye. His head was stuffed with unresolved doubts and questions. His body knew better. His head hit the pillow, and he was out.

His dreams weren’t peaceful, but they didn’t disturb his rest either.

What woke him up was the crack of his door being kicked in.

Shift Work (Night Shift, Book 1) by TA Moore: Blog Tour, Exclusive Short Story, Release Day Review and Giveaway

March 18, 2021 by Denise

You’d think the werewolves would be the worst thing about the Night Shift; you’d be wrong.

All Officer Kit Marlow wanted was a cup of coffee and some downtime before his next night shift. Instead, he got a naked man in the elevator and an unaccounted-for dead girl in the morgue. He’s going to need to deal with both before he can head for his bed.

Or anyone else’s. Although not much chance of that.

Reluctantly partnered with the acerbic security consultant Cade Deacon—last seen naked in the elevator—Marlow delves into the dead girl’s life. Between them, they uncover a new crime scene with the whiff of old corruption. A corruption that, five years ago, nearly took Marlow’s life and ended his career.

Finding out who killed the dead girl on the slab might only be the start of this investigation. Oh, and it’s the second night of the full moon. So 80% of the city, including Cade, will turn into werewolves in the middle of the case.

So, there’s that.

Split Shift: Night Shift: Book Two

First of all, thank you so much for having me! I’m thrilled to be here with my new release, Shift Work by TA Moore. It’s a novella. It’s a longish novella, but still a novella. It’s the first book in a three book series that will be coming out over the next….three months. So that’s easy! Well, for you. I’m going to have no nails left.

For the blog tour I’ve written a short story set in the Night Shift world. I hope you enjoy!

Chapter Five

She was blind.

Temporarily at least. As Marlow watched, the blisters were absorbed back into the skin, and the burned tissue stitched itself into shiny scar tissue.

Home-made flamethrower probably—it was a popular self-defense for nulls that had to be out. It didn’t work well, and they’d been lucky she was young. Once someone shifted, they weren’t a person anymore, but they weren’t a dumb animal either. Werewolves were smart enough; they just didn’t think like people. Werewolves were smart enough; they just didn’t think like people or want what people wanted. Annie would forget her blistered eyes when she woke up. The wolf wouldn’t. This wouldn’t work again.

Drool splattered on the floor as Annie swung her head around and snorted at the air. Her ears twitched on top of her head, first one way and then back toward Marlow. She took a step forward, down on all fours, so the muscles bulked in her heavy shoulders, and licked the air.

Marlow didn’t try to hold his breath. It just made your heart beat faster, louder, and eventually you’d have to suck in some air. He just kept his breathing slow and steady, his heart rate calm, as he slid backward on his ass.

The stack of boxes at the end of the aisle were old-fashioned scales. $50 a pop. Marlow hoped he wasn’t going to have to pay for damages. He kicked them over on top of Annie. As the wolf reared back in surprise, he used the time the distraction had bought to scramble to his feet.

“There’s a whole city out there, Annie,” he said as he jogged backward ahead of her. “Deer. I heard they released some pigs.”

She crushed the boxes underfoot as he stalked him. Her eyes were gunked with pus, but the glaze of cataracts had faded. When he shifted direction, she turned her head to track him.

One step back.

Another.

Marlow mentally plotted his route through the department. He needed to keep her away from Beth. They might have been friends in the daylight, but the wolf wouldn’t care if she smelled blood.

Suddenly something crashed against the floor on the far side  of the store.  Three men, backpacks on their shoulders and kitted out in half-assed body armor, kicked over some of the shelves and stitched a spray of bullets down the aisle. The tiles splintered and shattered in divots and chunks until one of the projectiles caught Annie in the shoulder.

She threw her head back and roared in pain as the metal punched through flesh and bone. The next bullet docked her ear, the point shredded off in a spray of bloody hair, and then Annie threw herself out of the way and disappeared into the darkness.

“Idiots,” Marlow snarled. He gestured back the way he’d came—toward Beth—but hopefully, they’d more sense than to indulge a grudge now. “Get out of here.Go.”

One of them shot at him. It missed, punched into the shelves behind him, and then they ran.

Annie snarled, a low, wet sound, and then lunged out of the darkness.

Read the rest of the story on https://bit.ly/2Ojm6jQ!

This novella is set in a new world, and I had a bit of a time trying to understand what a few of the words meant initially (still not sure I understand what a null is 🙂 ) However, it is easy to catch up and figure out where things were headed.

I’m glad to see there is a second book with these MC’s, because I definitely want to know more about Kit and his past. That was piece that was revealed very slowly, in little chunks, and I want to know more!

There’s a bit of a murder mystery that sneaks into a lot of TA Moore’s books, and to give you a heads up there are definitely a few gory details that you might expect along with a murder among werewolves, but it definitely keeps you guessing.

I enjoyed the interactions between Marlow and Cade, but in many ways, I enjoyed their internal conversations with themselves almost as much. They kept trying to talk themselves out of their crush on the other, and it was such a back and forth it made me laugh.

I am looking forward to seeing how these things play out in the next book.

Every Other Weekend by TA Moore: Release Day Review

October 23, 2018 by Denise

Divorce lawyer Clayton Reynolds is a happy cynic who believes in hard work and one-night stands. He also believes that being an excellent lawyer means he never has to go home to the miserable trailer park where he grew up and that volunteering at a women’s shelter will buy off the conscience that occasionally plagues him. So when Nadine Graham comes in with a broken arm and a son she desperately wants to protect, Clayton can’t turn down their plea for help.

Taking the case means appealing to investigator “Just Call Me Kelly” for help. That wouldn’t be so bad if Kelly weren’t a hopeless romantic… and the hottest man Clayton’s ever met.

Kelly has always had a crush on the unobtainable Clayton Reynolds. He agrees to help, even though he has enough on his plate with the motherless baby his widowed brother left him to care for.

As Nadine’s case turns dangerous and the two seemingly opposite men are forced to work together, they discover they have a great deal in common—but solving the case and saving Nadine’s life might cost Kelly everything.

What the F?!

I absolutely hated almost every person in this book. Literally.
First, we have divorce attorney, Clayton. He’s a commitment-phobe, which I kind of get I guess, I mean he hands out divorces all day long. I’d be jaded too if my job was literally the dissolution of love and marriage. So, I kinda get it. Kind of. He’s still pretty jerky in the beginning… BUT, when an abused woman and her five year old son come to him for help, he knows he needs additional help from private investigator- Kelly.

Kelly has the most whacked out family. His mom is an enabling psychopath. I didn’t understand her at all, and every compliment she paid Kelly, just seemed backhanded and insincere. His whole family was crazy, though his dad kind of won me over in the end. His brother Byron though was an actual psychopath…. Which is why Kelly had his newborn son, taking care of him until he got over the death of his wife, or whatever. You won’t understand the brother, so go into with the knowledge that you shouldn’t even try… It literally made me sick to my stomach… he’s the equivalent to a serial killer, beats his wife and scares the crap out of his kid…. Gets in with the wrong people, and still…. The mom babies him, makes excuses for him, so do his brothers, and yet….Nothing happens to him?? Does he even go to jail?? Why did we get no closure from that when the flippin story was halfway all about him!????? Did I just miss that part? I mean, I did skim some, but surely I didn’t miss that part.

So, while the guys are working together to help out the abused woman and her helpless child, I wanted to smack her around for being so stupid, but all the while, the guys are hookin up and fallin in love. Cool, right? Except, kind of, but not really, because I didn’t feel any connection between the two at all for the first half of the book and then by the end… they loved each other. I was so out of my element here.

I mean, give me a hot guy with a baby, and I’m all over it! These guys were no different, and I did get into their love story that wasn’t really a love story by the end. I love love love how it ended, but mainly because I wanted Clayton to not be so jaded and bitter, and I knew Kelly could give him that.
I was also glad that they gave the baby some stability instead of the dad he was cursed with. The ending was worth almost all the turmoil because I love me a happily ever after with two hot dads. I just wish the rest of it wasn’t so blood-boiling. I mean… I’m all for a mystery and suspense… but I need closure! I needed the brother to pay with his life, or his freedom or an arm or something…. He laid so much pain and devastation and stupidity in his wake…. I needed the justice, and it never came. I’ll stew on that for days…. Ugh.

Anyway… it was a good story if you don’t mind that sort of thing lol and the love story really was sweet at the end, so I reckon, 3 pieces of eye candy from me. I won’t be reading any more about this family though. They’re all crazy!

His Reaper by Cora Rose...my reviewSigh. I love Bane. Why? I mean he is quite obviously psychotic. A murderer. Deranged. Violent. He gives friends jewelry made of body parts but also wants to snuggle. But he is also like a golden retriever. And he has no boundaries. To say I couldn't wait for his story is putting it lightly.Bane has been around for several books. I think back to Diablo. He was intriguing then, but got moreso. Every book gave us more and more of Bane. So who would be able to be with Bane? Of course it would be another...reaper. Bane discovered Georgiy. Reaper for another family on the east coast where Angel lives. Just read them all. Trust me.Georgiy ends up on the Costello compound and immediately claims Bane. But as much as he wants him, he fights it. But they are SO perfect together. This book is not for the queasy. It's like a horror movie crossed with a Hallmark movie. He loves love. He loves seeing his friends in love. And he wants that too. And he has Georgiy- sort of. But the golden retriever gets his feelings hurt as well. Poor Bane. All the past characters come into play in this book as well as someone new. Who Bane pretty much immediately adopts as his new bff. The way he played his new friend and someone else was just hilarious. The only thing I didn't love was one part of the epilogue. It fit Bane, but it felt like Georgiy wouldn't do it. Even for Bane. But still. Not a reason to not love this book. But definitely, seriously, you need to start at book 1 The Silencer.4 1/2 POECThe Author Agency ... See MoreSee Less

✨Let’s celebrate! It’s release day for HIS REAPER by @coraroseauthor! Grab it in KU!#OneClickNowbooks2read.com/u/3GZL2nWhy you need to #ONECLICK this book…💀Dark Romcom💀Touch Starved💀Voyeurism💀High Heat💀Bondage💀Cages, Rope & Orgasm Control💀Taboo Found Family💀MM romanceSome say I’m too soft and cuddly for a guy who wields bone saws and strings friendship necklaces with human eyeballs—but I just call that work-life balance. And honestly, I love my job as the Costellos’ reaper.Lately, though, my biggest problem isn’t the dismembered corpses, it’s something far more seductive. Georgiy Sokolov. He smells mouth-watering, like disinfectant and fancy aftershave.Plus, he comes with a stern promise to ruin me with surgical precision—and believe me, I will be begging him for it.If only I could get him to return my texts…But when a shadowy evil threatens my found family, and my nightmares stir up repressed memories that somehow feel connected, Georgiy and I will stop at nothing to protect what is ours.Armed with my bloody handsaw and Georgiy’s dainty scalpel, we try to uncover the dark truths about the past that haunts me and the Death that stalks me. It’s all very romantic. So if you've come to witness my final chapter…good luck, friend. My name’s Bane. Say it while you still have your tongue.#newbookalert #mmromance #corarose The Author Agency ...
