Our conversation faded, and we sat watching the tide creep up the beach with every set of waves. The sound of a girl shrieking in the distance followed by rich laughter made me smile. I tipped my head back and closed my eyes, wishing I felt up to a walk across the island tonight because the weather was perfect for it.

When I opened my eyes, I couldn’t believe what sat on the table. A green notebook with the edges curled up from use. “Where’d you get this?”

Dane’s cheeks turned pink, the corner of his mouth lifting upward in a shy smile. “I figured you hadn’t been out to the mailbox since the night we were there. Thought you might miss your reading time.”

“So you made a four-mile round-trip for me?” Maybe I shouldn’t have been shocked, because that was the type of guy Dane was, but no one had ever gone out of their way like this for me. I didn’t have a lot of dating experience, but I’d never even been able to get any of my boyfriends to walk out there with me. They all thought it was a redneck tourist trap, not worth wasting hours of their time. But Dane, who I’d treated like crap last Saturday morning, had walked out there and brought back a book for me to read without me even asking.

“Go on, pick a page and read it to me.” Dane slid lower in his chair and closed his eyes.

I flipped the notebook open to a random page.

“What’s it say?”

“This one’s cheesy,” I warned him.

“Don’t care. Whatever page you open it to is the one you have to read.” He sat up and smiled. “That’s a new rule I made up. The people who write those notes want to be heard, so let’s hear them.”

Heart. Melting. “Okay, just remember you asked for it. Based on the handwriting and what it says, I’m pretty sure this was a teenage girl, probably out there with her parents, but maybe not.”

“You’re stalling,” he pointed out, smirking again. If I was bolder, I’d have lunged over this table and kissed that cocky grin off his face.

“I met the most amazing guy yesterday, but I probably won’t get to see him again. He was funny and really cute. And he said I had a nice smile. No one’s said that to me before, probably because I had those stupid braces for so long. But he liked my smile…”

I kept reading until the end of the letter, signed with a heart with two sets of initials.

“That wasn’t so bad,” he said when I finished. “I wonder if she did get to see him again before they left. Or if they at least kept talking. I hope so.”

“If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were a closet romantic, Dane Montgomery,” I teased.

Sloan Johnson is a big-city girl trapped in a country girl’s body. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields, while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool, and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Leave a comment for Sloan about her upcoming book, and you could win an ebook from her backlist.

Inseparable by Sloan Johnson: Exclusive Excerpt, Release Blitz and Giveaway

December 2, 2017 by Denise

Trevor and Gabe never knew life without the other. As only children, they grew up as close as brothers, but their love grew to something more. Something they couldn’t talk about because their parents wouldn’t understand.

Gabe is gay and unapologetic about his sexuality. He refuses to live his life in the shadows, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t harboring secrets.

Trevor is his parents’ miracle child and he doesn’t want to hurt them. Coming out, admitting he’s in love with Gabe, could ruin everything.

Heading off to college was supposed to finally free them to be together, but nothing is as easy as it seems. Can they find a way to navigate this new world, living and loving openly?

The only upside was Gabe and I laid out a blanket near the edge of the circle. I was testing the waters, because eventually I’d have to find the balls to come out. Both of us leaned back, and I inched my hand towards Gabe’s behind us until our pinkies touched. His eyes shone in the firelight when he looked at me, but it was more than that. He let out a contented sigh and I realized these small changes might be enough for now.

A while later, I leaned closer to him. “You about ready to get out of here? I think we could have a much better time back in our room.” “Yeah?” He wiggled around on the blanket, drawing my attention to the bulge in his shorts. No questions about where he was hoping tonight would go. I wanted that, even if I couldn’t come out and say it. For a moment, I closed my eyes and leaned in, wanting to feel the stubble of his jaw abrading my skin as we kissed. Someone cleared their throat behind us and I shot back. The lust in Gabe’s gaze was briefly replaced by disappointment that I couldn’t let myself just be with him.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered. He shook his head and stood to face Chris. The guy had a knack for turning up everywhere at the wrong time. “You guys heading to the after party?” he asked. It seemed strange for a senior to invite freshman to parties, but maybe that was how this school worked. After all, this wasn’t high school.

“Nah, I’m about done with human interaction for the day,” Gabe announced in the way only he could without coming across as a huge dweeb. “We’re gonna head back to the dorms.”

“Oh, sure.” Chris raised an eyebrow as he looked between us. He traced his tongue across his lower lip when his gaze landed on Gabe, and I felt a possessive urge building inside of me. He was my boyfriend, and I wasn’t a fan of other guys checking him out. Of course, other guys wouldn’t know they were doing anything wrong as long as I was locked in the closet. “Maybe next weekend.”

“Yeah, maybe,” Gabe told him. He snatched up our blanket and shoes. I followed him to the boardwalk, leaning on him for support as I rinsed my feet.

“You could’ve gone to the party,” I told him, not wanting him to feel like he had to go wherever I was. Once school started, there’d be plenty of time when we’d be on our own.

“I could if I wanted to,” he countered. “Turns out, I have a much better proposition on the table for tonight.”

“Yeah? What’s that?” I asked, a teasing lilt in my voice.

Gabe leaned in, nipping my ear where anyone could see, and it took everything in me to keep the anxiety at bay. “Unless I’m mistaken, I’m pretty sure this sexy guy invited me back to his room for some naked time.”

“Mmm, that does sound enticing.” I cautiously reached out to brush the back of my hand over his prick. “You should probably get back to his room before he chickens out.”

False Start by Sloan Johnson: Exclusive Cover Reveal, Excerpt and Giveaway

April 28, 2017 by Denise

Title: False Start

Author: Sloan Johnson

Series: Wilmington Breakers Book 2

Cover Artist: Cover Me Darling–Marisa-rose Shor

Nixon Cross isn’t wired to share his life with anyone. He’d considered a relationship once, but after the one man patient enough to put up with all his quirks shut him down, he committed all of his energy to football and helping his players. Now, one of his players need more help than Nixon can provide and his former flame is the one man who will know what to do.
Retired NAFL player Lincoln Sims had no choice but to stay in the closet; he was a professional athlete at a time when it was impossible to be honest about his sexuality. After retiring, he confessed his secret to his wife and son because he was tired of living a lie. Now, he’s ready to live his life. Nixon Cross is the man he left behind but could never forget.
Can these men find a way to recover from their false start years earlier?

“Nixon, you can tell me it’s none of my business if you want—”

“It’s none of your business,” I deadpanned. If he was starting off like that, I was sure he was getting ready to dive into a topic he had no place talking about.

“Not going to stop me,” he shot back, taking a sip of his own drink. “What really happened between you and Lincoln Sims?”

Aww, hell. I could lie or I could tell the truth; both options were equally unappealing. I wasn’t a liar, unless you counted carefully avoiding topics I’d rather stay buried as lying. But if I told the truth, there was a chance I’d be outing Lincoln, and that broke the second rule I lived by: never make a promise you can’t keep and never break a promise made. I chose to do what I did best; go for the vague response. “You know how it is. Life gets complicated and sometimes you drift apart.”

“Look, I’m not trying to upset you, but I need to know if him being here is going to do just that. I’m already dealing with the show, rookies who don’t think they should have to play by the rules now that they’re out of college, vets who’re certain we’d never cut them because they’re invaluable to the team, the league’s coming down on me about the situation with Zach, Zach trying to pretend he’s not waiting for the world to crash down around him, and the list goes on,” Teddy rambled, leaning in close enough to speak without fear of being overheard. “While it’s not healthy for you to do the very thing we’re trying to break Zach of, I’m willing to act as a buffer if there’s a reason you don’t want to see or talk to Lincoln while he’s in town. I need you focused on getting those boys ready, and right now, I’m pretty sure the only reason they’re busting ass in the gym is fear.”

“Nothing wrong with that,” I quipped. I often wondered if Teddy got sick of having to act as a buffer between me and the rest of the world. He’d been doing it for years now, and it definitely wasn’t something he’d counted on when I was hired.

“There is when they’re all pushing so hard,” Teddy countered. “It’s not just Zach I’m worried about. A few of the veterans have come to me, asking what’s been going on with you for the past week. And the only thing I can think of that’s changed is I asked you to talk to Lincoln. So, I’m going to ask you one more time; are you capable of being around him without it fucking you up more than it already has? You don’t have to tell me why talking to him affected you the way it did, just assure me you’ll work on pulling your head out of your ass.”

“You have my word,” I promised. And speak of the devil, Lincoln chose that exact moment to walk onto the patio. Our eyes met and what felt like a jolt of electricity zinged through my body. I could feel Teddy watching for any sign of discomfort, ready to kick me out if he thought it was best for my emotional stability or current lack thereof. Shrugging him off as I stood, I took the first step towards reconciling my past. At least for the next few days, Linc was going to be in town and I’d do everything in my power to keep my promise to Teddy.

And now, the hotness of this cover…

“I want to hate you,” he admitted, scrubbing a hand over the back of his neck. “Life would be so damn easy if I hated you. But I realized tonight that I don’t hate you. I love you. I always have, even though I shouldn’t. I can’t change that. And now, my teammates know about me and they said they’ll have my back if anyone gives me shit for it, so there’s no reason for me to not love you. Expect that part about how you wrapped a chain around my heart and dragged it down the road when you left. Maybe Nate’s right. Maybe what we need comes into our life when we need it and it’s up to us to recognize that.”

“Zach, don’t. Please,” I begged again. His words were giving me hope, and I’d been through that before. With him. If he was sober, I’d have thrown myself into his arms and thanked him for cracking open the door to reconciliation. But he’d been drinking. He’d had a stressful night. He’d come out to his teammates. There was far too much going on in his mind for him to be thinking clearly. “If you really mean what you’re saying, you’ll still mean it tomorrow. Let’s talk when you’re not so… excitable.”

“Fuck that,” Zach spat out. “You think I’m saying this because I’m drunk, don’t you?” I did, but I’d be damned if I was going to admit that to him. “You’re right. I am. But that doesn’t mean I’m talking out of my ass. If anything, being drunk is helping, because I can’t hold back what I’ve been wanting to say to you since I saw you in that meeting. This shit has been there the whole time, but now, I’m not trying to convince myself it’s a bad idea. And what do I get in return? You telling me it’s a bad idea. Maybe I should take that as a sign that this really is a stupid fucking idea.”

He turned to storm out of the room and I jumped off the bed. It’d be smart to let him walk away and cool down, see where his head was at in the morning, but fear was stronger than logic. If he walked out of what I’d started to think of as my bedroom, he may very well shut down and we’d never have this chance again. I reached for him and he jerked out of my weak grasp. His shoulders slumped and he leaned against the wall. “I’m not trying to fuck you because I’m drunk.”

“I didn’t realize you were trying to fuck me at all,” I quipped. My cock twitched, reminding me how long it’d been since anyone had given me a good, hard fuck.

“Well, not just that,” Zach admitted with an empty chuckle. “But I can admit I’d thought about the night ending that way.”

I placed my hands on Zach’s shoulders and turned him around to face me. We stood so close our feet were touching. I leaned in slightly, resting my hands on his hips. If this went the way I feared, tonight would be my biggest regret in life, not the night I walked away the first time. “I know you think I’m being an asshole by telling you we can’t do this, but I think you also know I’m right. I’m not saying never, I’m just saying not tonight. Not when you’ve been drinking. At all. If we do this, I want both of us clear-headed. Because if I’m with you again, I’m not walking away. And I won’t let you run, either.”

“That’s what I want, Grif. It’s what I always wanted,” Zach admitted. He lifted his hand to my face and I closed my eyes, reveling in the warmth of his body. I felt his body shift and I knew what was coming. I swallowed back the emotions overtaking my body. Bit back the pleas for him to ignore everything I’d just said and throw me back on the bed again, consequences be damned. His breath ghosted over my neck as he spoke, the words shooting through my body like an electric shock. “I know you don’t want to hear it right now, but I still love you. It was always you, and no matter how much I tried to hate you for destroying what we had, I knew why you did it. Deep down, I knew you did what you thought was best for both of us. But it wasn’t, because now we’ve both spent three years alone and miserable, because no one since then could compare to what we had.”

Not trusting my voice, I did what any man would do when they’re that close to the other half of their soul. I opened my eyes so I could watch him as I pulled his hips closer to mine. And then, I kissed him. It wasn’t sloppy and desperate, it was a promise to him that we would be talking about this more in the morning. Hopefully, early enough that we’d be able to spend the rest of the day not talking. Zach moaned into my mouth, sliding his hand around to the back of my neck, carding his fingers through my hair, tugging slightly to expose my neck. He broke the kiss and I knew we needed space between us, but I was frozen in place. His mouth moved lower, sucking and biting at the side of my neck. My knees nearly buckled when he found the hollow behind my ear and started teasing me.

“Always you,” he whispered before standing straighter and pushing me back just enough to slide out from between me and the wall. “If you change your mind tonight, you know where to find me.”

It would’ve been easy to climb into the bed next to him. And if he was still the way he was in college, he’d be so sound asleep that he’d barely even move as I settled against his side. I could take one night next to him, just in case he did change his mind in the morning. But I didn’t, because when I was next to him, I wanted him to know I was there. I love you, too, Zach, I whispered into the darkness and rolled over, trying one last time to get some sleep. It never came.

Never Too Late by Sloan Johnson : Exclusive Cover Reveal, Excerpt and Giveaway

January 26, 2016 by Denise

nevertoolateIGsynopsisDax: My life ended six years ago. No, really. I was dead on the side of the road following a gruesome motorcycle accident. From what I’ve been told, it’s only because of one stubborn man that I have another chance to make something of my life. I no longer hate him for screwing up what I thought I wanted. I want to thank him. NEED to tell him what his actions mean to me.

Now, I’m headed back to the town I’ve never set foot in even though it’s a huge part of my life. I’m not thrilled about that, but the job offers haven’t exactly been flowing in. They’ll probably think I’m crazy, because there’s no way I won’t be able to look at every guy I walk past, wondering if he’s the one who saved me.

Michael: My entire life, I wanted to save lives. I’d earned a full-ride scholarship and had been accepted to med schools across the country. I was so close to making those dreams a reality until the night I held a dying man in my arms. I’ve never been able to get the images of his lifeless body, caked in mud, out of my head. Even when the paramedics tried to take over saving him, I couldn’t let go. I never let go. Eventually, my guilt over not doing more cost me everything but my son. And now, I worry I’ll lose him if I don’t get it together.

I’ve often thought that if I could find him, maybe I could get some closure and finally get my life back on track. Now he’s here and I’m more of a mess than ever. Once the truth comes out, will he keep trying to save me or will he realize that it’s too late?

excerpt

The doorbell rang and I rushed to the front of the house. When I opened the door, I was met with a smug looking Dax and a very sheepish looking son. “Lose something?” Dax asked as he pushed his way into the house.

“Jagger, did you go to Dax’s house without me?” I asked, crouching down to hug him. My entire body shook and I nearly lost my balance, but Dax reached down to steady me. I offered him a quick smile before turning my attention back to Jagger. “What do I have to do to get you to see how much it scares me when you do shit like that?”

“I just wanted to help you.” Jagger’s explanation was muffled as I cupped the back of his head, pressing his face into my shoulder. “You were worried you’d be late for work, so when you got dressed, I ran down to talk to Dax.”nevertoolatesloanjohnson

A boulder settled in my stomach. My kid was once again running to my rescue. God, what type of parent was I? “That was nice of you to do, but you still can’t leave without me,” I reminded him, every bit of anger seeping out of my body. I wanted to be pissed at hell with him for what he did, but he wouldn’t understand that it was only because he’d scared me so damn much.

“We had a talk on the way back down here,” Dax told me. “Now, if what the kid says is right, you need to get your butt to work. He and I have big plans tonight, and you’d just be the third wheel.”

It may not have been his intention, but that cut deep. I hated knowing that I was getting ready to go deal with a bunch of drunks for the night while he stayed and took care of my son. Again, my job not his.

Sensing the drastic drop in my mood, Dax reached out a hand to help me up from the floor. “Hey, you know I didn’t mean anything by it,” he said softly once Jagger ran off to start pulling blocks out of the bins in the living room. “I know you’d rather be here with him, but that’s not possible. And kids don’t like changes in their routines, so I’m going to do whatever I can to make sure he has a good night. Plus, he told me he’s worried about your mom. Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, she’s got a fever and a nasty cough. It’s probably nothing, but my dad wants to take her in to get checked,” I told him, even though I was still struggling to convince myself that it wasn’t anything serious. Somewhere along the way, I’d lost the ability to think rationally and I’d become convinced that everyone I dared to care about would leave me eventually. “Are you sure you don’t mind staying with him tonight? I know you already gave up most of your day for us.”

✨ EXCERPT: TINSEL & TOOLS by @authorkimberlyknight & @rachellynadams releasing November 7th! Pre-Order now at your favorite book vendor as it will be exclusive to Amazon on release day! #PreOrderNowbooks2read.com/u/mZDeWy “You know, I don’t remember the last time I sat like this, with a fire going and snow falling outside. Kind of feels like something out of a book.”I arched a brow. “One of yours?”“Yeah, I’ve written a scene like this before,” he said, grinning.“Guess I’ll take the credit in the next one. Hot water, cold beer, and a little inspiration.”“Inspiration, huh?” His eyes lingered on mine a beat longer than before. “Careful, Cole. You’re starting to sound like you want to end up in my story.”I smirked and tipped my bottle toward him. “Only if you make me look good.”He laughed, then set his empty bottle on the table and glanced toward the kitchen. “Think I could get another one of those?”“Yeah.” I pushed up from the couch. “Come on.” He followed, carrying his empty bottle. I opened the fridge, leaned in, and grabbed two more. When I turned, we almost collided.“Sorry,” he murmured, stepping aside.“You’re fine.” I handed him the bottle, my fingers brushing his as he took it.The space between us closed before I realized it, his shoulder brushing mine and lingering there, a simple touch that shouldn’t have meant anything but sent a jolt through me I couldn’t explain.I told myself I should step back, laugh it off, give him space. I didn’t. Heat climbed my neck as I met his eyes and my pulse jumped. When he leaned in, my thoughts scattered. I’d never once pictured myself kissing a man, not until that very moment. But it had been a long time since I’d kissed anyone, and even longer since I’d gotten off with someone instead of by myself. Maybe that was why I didn’t turn away. His mouth found mine, sure and warm and real, and shock held me still. My first thought should’ve been to pull back, to tell him he’d gotten it wrong, but instead I let myself sink into it, kissing him back before I could think twice.✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review this awesome release: bit.ly/tinselandtoolssignup#kimberlyknight #rachellynadams #mmromance #holidayromance The Author Agency ... ✨It’s cover reveal day for BOYFRIEND WITHOUT BENEFITS by @rileyhartwrites releasing December3rd!#PreOrderNowgeni.us/Caik8Why you need to #ONECLICK this book…hockey mmcaccidental datingfriends to loverscinnamon roll mmcpraisemm romanceAnthonyI’m the last single member of the Jilted Exes’ Club, and I have no plans to change that.I’m fulfilled with my work at the club, dance classes, yoga, and the Exes. Plus, I’ve been extremelypreoccupied with one Kason Maddox, the LA Rebels’ goalie. Let’s just say that since we’ve becomefriends, my eyes might drift in his general direction a little too much. But it’s only looking. And lookingnever harmed anyone…Eventually, our texting sessions lead to dinners out and ending our nights watching our favorite shows. But when the paparazzi catch sight of us and the photos go viral, I suddenly find out I’ve had aboyfriend and didn’t know—a boyfriend without the benefits. And I’m thinking we should reconsider thebenefits in this relationship if we are going to be in one.KasonSo…I thought we were dating. Turns out, the guy I was dating had no idea that’s what we were doing.Friend-zoned without even knowing it. Cool. The equivalent of taking a puck to the face. But due to an innocent little photo or two, now everyone thinks we’re together, so we have threechoices:1- Stop hanging out to silence the rumors.2- Hang out as friends and ignore the gossip blogs.3- Start dating—and both of us are aware of said dating this time.I know which one I’m rooting for. And if I have to use a little dirty talk and some praise to shift things inmy favor, I’m game.✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up here for this awesome release: bit.ly/boyfriendwobenefitssignupCover Credit:Cover Design: Natasha SnowCover Photographer Katie Cadwallader PhotographyIllustrated Cover by Seaj Art#rileyhart #coverreveal #mmromance #kindleunlimited #bookstagram #booktok The Author Agency ... ✨TEASER: SINS OF THE FATHER by @isabel__lucero releasing November 17! #PreOrderHere:a.co/d/3wodrb1 Why you will love this book…❤️‍🔥Taboo/Forbidden✟ Priest x Mafia hitman ❤️‍🔥Opposites attract ✟ Antihero❤️‍🔥MM romanceHe comes to me through a lattice in a confessional booth in my church. He’s brash, vulgar, and confessing to things that would send him to hell, and yet, I find myself intrigued by the mysterious man.His sinful words thrill me. His way of life, so different from my own, has me coveting excitement that’s long been missing. The more I’m around him, the more I realize how long I’ve been deprived of so much, and the more my own deviance begins to emerge. On paper, nothing about the two of us makes sense, and there are many reasons why I should keep my distance. I try to be pious, but if anyone were to find the skeletons in my closet, I’d be excommunicated from the church. When something from my past reveals itself, I find myself being pulled into a way of life I didn’t think would be in my future, and now I straddle the line between right and wrong. Morality vs necessity. I’m a priest. He’s a murderer. But we’re both sinners.✨INFLUENCERS: Sign up to review here: bit.ly/sinsofthefathersignup#isabellucero #kindleunlimited #mmromance #bookstagram #booktok #romancebooks #spicyromance The Author Agency ...
