Diamond In The Rough by Charlie Cochet: New Release Review * 2

February 22, 2019 by Denise

For Ward “King” Kingston the role of protector, forged by fire and tragedy, is one he takes seriously. When King is asked to safeguard the son of a four-star general and friend, he is pulled back into the world of government black ops on a mission that raises painful memories from his past. The moment King meets Leo, amid the chaos of a lockdown at a secret black site, it’s clear he’s never faced a challenge like this—one that will test his unwavering sense of control.

Leopold de Loughrey is a misunderstood genius whose anxiety and insecurities are sent into overdrive when he is forcefully recruited to work on a top-secret project. Terrified of what his role as “invaluable asset” means, Leo’s stress leads to disappearances, arguments, and blowups that threaten the project and Leo’s future. King’s arrival is a calm in the storm for Leo and his frenetic thoughts.

King and Leo couldn’t be more different, yet as they navigate the dangers of a secret multi-agency operation and face unknown threats, their differences could be what saves them. Neither man believes a happily ever after is in the cards, but their hearts might just prove them wrong… if they can survive a deadly betrayal.

“Everything okay?”

Leo bit down on his bottom lip and nodded. “Mm-hm.” How about we not reveal what a complete and total freak we are to the hot soldier guy? Not hot. Obviously hot, but Leo shouldn’t be thinking hot. Ones and zeroes. That’s what he should be thinking. Ones and zeroes and sixes, or was that eights? Six-pack or eight-pack?

“Leo?”

“Eight.”

“I’m sorry?”

Leo’s jaw went slack. Holy shit, he’d said that out loud! He promptly shut his mouth, eyes wide. Something banged somewhere, and he flinched. Lifting his gaze, King scanned the room, his expression turning pensive, like he was trying to figure something out. For Leo, it was easy. Noise. It filled the room. Clicking of keyboards, talking, whirring of equipment, and movement. The hostility that rolled off some of the analysts like little clouds of doom didn’t help either.

“I’ll be right back,” King said before he headed toward the analysts.

Leo followed King’s movement as he walked down the rows of workstations until he seemed to find what he was looking for. With a warm smile at Heather, one of the first analysts to be recruited, he pointed to a pair of heavy-duty noise-canceling headphones. He said something that had her blinking up at him, and he checked her ID before his next words were followed by him putting his hand to his chest. She raked her gaze over every inch of him—way to be subtle, Heather—and her cheeks went pink before she lifted her wide eyes to his. Leo wouldn’t have believed it if he hadn’t seen it, but she visibly sighed. Like a dreamy sigh, not the frustrated “why do you have to breathe the same oxygen as me” sigh she’d given Leo that morning when he’d asked to borrow a highlighter.

Heather nodded, and King took the pair of large headphones from her desk, then returned to Leo, Heather’s gaze never leaving him, or rather his ass. Leo narrowed his eyes at her, and when she realized she’d been busted, she started typing away at her keyboard like she was Sandra Bullock in Speed and her desk would blow up if she typed under fifty words per minute.

“Does anyone actually ever say no to you?” Leo asked.

King chuckled and handed him the headphones. “You’d be surprised. My family certainly has no problem giving me a piece of their minds. Noise-canceling headphones. Why don’t you use these for now and let me know which brand you prefer, and I’ll be sure to get a pair brought to you right away.”

“How did you know?”

“One of my brothers-in-arms, Jack, handles cybersecurity for Four Kings Security, and when he’s working on an important project, he puts on headphones to block out any noise that messes with his concentration. Usually it’s when our other brother, Ace, is in the same building.”

Leo couldn’t help his smile. “King, Jack, Ace? I’m sensing a pattern here.”

There are authors that are “autobuy” for us or must read or whatever. Their books are a comfort for whatever reason. No big surprises in the story lines or tropes. Or maybe because it is always a different story line or trope. Charlie Cochet is a must read for me. Because I know they will be fun stories with hot sex and a lot of laughs. To some people, they might get bored. But for me, it’s kind of a comfort. Because I know what I am going to get.

We have the snarky who always jokes around. The tough in charge guy. The computer nerd. The fighter. The play it by the book guy. But so what? They are fun to read. Sure I can draw parallels between characters in different series. But it’s still fun to read.

All of that being said, in this book we get King- who everyone thinks of as the boss (even though they are all partners) in Four Kings Security and Leo, son of a four star general who worked closely with King and his brothers in the military.

In the previous three books King was kind of gruff and grouchy. But Leo seems to melt him almost immediately. And we get way more of the back story of what happened to them on their last mission. When they lost half their team and the surviving half almost lost themselves. King definitely becomes more human to the reader.

Leo is, of course, adorable. The genius nerdy computer guy. Who is kind of a hermit. And has anxiety. He is funny, but what makes him more funny is that often he doesn’t know he is funny. The first scene when he is introduced to us cracked me up.

Leo and King together are also adorable. As they are meant to be. King takes care of Leo- who desperately needs taking care of. But King also NEEDS to nurture Leo. It is just in his nature. Just like he takes care of his brothers. This is just more obvious.

There’s a bit of a mystery in the story and the penultimate fight scene. And of course, the happily ever after.

I go to McDonald’s because I like their Big Macs. And I like reading Charlie Cochet books because I always have a good time.

If Charlie writes it, I am reading it, no matter what. That being said, I was really looking forward to King’s story. It was going to take the right kind of person for King to let go enough to let someone in, and be willing to take the harassing that was bound to happen from his brothers.

Leo was a great foil to King. Smart as a whip, he could engage King’s mind, as well as his body. As he gained confidence in himself, he was able to see that he could be a person many people would like or love, and not just his family. Following that up with becoming part of an entirely new family.

These two were great together. Leo could tease the serious King, and he could let his softer side show by taking care of Leo when he was too involved in his work to take care of himself.

There was one small piece missing for me with regards to Leo’s dad, but it certainly wasn’t enough to change my enjoyment of this story. This entire series has been so good from beginning to end. And of course, we get the spin-off now. 🙂 Who is next???? (You have to read to find out!)

Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
Sweet Vengeance (Sins of the Father book 2) by Riley HartMy review! 4 1/2 pieces of eye candy!I loved the first book and the characters. Even though they were all morally gray. Except for Ollie, Dean's roommate. He's the opposite of them. He is studying to be a lawyer. But Cillian has had an eye on him. Cillian has always accepted that good sex is good sex and if it happens with another man, no problem. So when we get the "only one bed" thing after Ollie is hurt- you know things will happen. Now this could have been tough because Cillian and his BFF Rory usually do threesomes with a girl between them. No sexual contact between them, but they love sharing a woman. It's like their thing. They love each other platonically, but they also love that intimacy. So how would that play out with Ollie? And I have to say, it was done well. Really well. It lead to one of THE hottest sex scenes I've ever read. But at the same time it wasn't raunchy or gratuitous. It was...perfect.If you've read book 1 (READ BOOK ONE!) you'll be pleased to see Tiernan and Dean together. And Aslin still finding her footing as a single woman in college away from prying parental eyes. Are they still the bad guys? Yup Do we still love them? Also yup! Cillian has met his match in Ollie and I am here for it! ... See MoreSee Less

Meet Riley Hart:Riley Hart’s love of all things romance shines brightly in everything she writes. Her primary focus isMale/Male romance but under various pen names, her prose has touched practically every part of thespectrum of love and relationships. The common theme that ties them all together is stories told fromthe heart.A hopeless romantic herself, Riley is a lover of character-driven plots, many with flawed and relatablecharacters. She strives to create stories that readers can not only fall in love with, but also seethemselves in. Real characters and real love blended together equal the ultimate Riley Hart experience. When Riley isn’t creating her next story, you can find her reading, traveling, or dreaming about readingor traveling, and spending time with her two perfectly snarky kids, and one swoon-inducing husband.Connect with Riley Hart:www.instagram.com/rileyhartwrites/Blurb:CillianI can’t figure out why I’m so intrigued by Ollie Gibson. He’s nothing like me—soft where my world is hard, sweet and kind while I’ve grown up aroundviolence. But there’s a fire to him that sparks the one inside me, loyalty that calls to me, and bravery Irespect even if it gets him in trouble. When Ollie’s hurt and we don’t know if the men who attacked him will come back for more, Ican’t stop myself from claiming him. There’s nothing I won’t do to protect him, even go behindhis back for vengeance.I crave him—both the sweetness and the fire, the innocence and the dirty boy he turns intounder my touch.I’ll kill for him, turn my world upside down for him, share my pain and secrets with him. Olliehelps me deal with it all—even the drama with my father. It’s supposed to be temporary. I’m not supposed to want more, but I’m determined to keep him,and for a reason I can’t understand, Ollie wants me too.The future lawyer and the criminal. The Good Samaritan and the killer. We’re living betweentwo worlds, this place where vengeance can be sweet and our differences don’t matter. But weboth know it can’t go on like this forever. If the violence of my world doesn’t tear us apart, oneday Ollie will walk away…and I don’t know how to let myself lose him.Content Warning: Sweet Vengeance contains discussion and grief over the loss of a parent, violence, darker themes, drug use, and morally gray characters with no redemption arc. ✨EXCERPT: SWEET VENGEANCE by @rileyhartwrites releasing October 8th! #PreOrderNowgeni.us/SweetVengeanceAs soon as they leave, closing the door behind them, Cillian pulls the chair up to my bedside. “You need pain meds? I can get the nurse in here to give you some. You really should get some rest. Those fucking pigs shouldn’t have bothered you.”“Don’t do that. Don’t pretend to be nice. Don’t pretend you’re not exactly like the people who hurt me tonight.”The smile slides off his face. Cillian pushes his hands into his slacks. What even is that? Why does he dress like that all the time? His voice is steady, unemotional when he says, “I don’t pretend to be anything other than what I am. I know I’m not the hero. And I might be the bad guy, but I sure as shit am nothing like those motherfuckers who hurt you tonight. Three on one? Those fucking pussies don’t belong in the same universe as we do.”“Because you wouldn’t attack an old man? That makes you better?”“I never said I was better. I told you, I know who I am. Get some fucking sleep, Kitten. You look like shit.”I feel like it, but still, I flip him off. “Don’t call me that.”“Why? It’s what you are. Rory said you’re our brave little bunny, but you’re not. You’ve got some sharp claws, and you know how to use them. It’s my favorite thing about you.” And then he winks, and damned if heat doesn’t flush to my groin.I don’t want him, I don’t want him, I don’t want him. He’s supposed to be everything I hate in this world. He stands for everything I hate…yet I can’t hate him.“I’m not your anything,” I say.He shrugs. “Whatever you say, Kitten.”I don’t have the energy to argue with him, and luckily, the nurse comes in, ready to medicate me, as if she obeys everything Cillian says too…and she didn’t even have to hear him say it to know he wanted her to do it.#rileyhart #mmromance #kindleunlimited #bookstagram #booktok The Author Agency ... Two Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy
Nothing Special IX: Fire and Smoke by AE ViaLet's call it 4 1/2 stars. This book had everything! God and Day being God and Day, the expansion of a story line from a short story which brings us a new couple, checking in on all of the other couples we've cheered for over the years and...Vasquez. *Angry eyes*With everything above, there were several story lines within the main plot. Which was, of course, to get the bad guys. But we also get Wes and Law, childhood friends who became Hollywood pyrotechnics specialists and a couple; God and Day who, dare I say, stumble a bit in their relationship; Vasquez who still wants revenge and a task force that thinks it is indestructible.I loved bringing in Wes and Law to God's team. Zero police experience. Just two guys who like creating fire, smoke, fireworks and explosions for Hollywood movies. But God sees how they could really be an asset. Their "training" is not much more than "don't die", but what they bring to the table is something new and valuable.I gasped out loud when trouble was brewing with God and Day. Don't mess with my boys! And if Ms Via makes me like Ramon Vasquez....The ending was so perfect. Even if she never wrote these characters again, I would be satisfied about their endings. But we are not seeing the last of them. Thank goodness. ... See MoreSee Less
