Author Interview: Appearances Books 1 and 2 by TM Smith

Appearances, can be deceiving.

Raven and Tanis are trying very hard to merge their vastly different lifestyles, but Tanis issues with his own past could prove to be more than their fragile relationship can handle. Is their love for each other strong enough to weather the oncoming storm?

Aiya and Sawyer have fought hard to be together in a world where Opposite relationships are generally forbidden. Yet, they are still forced to keep their relationship a secret while they are outside the walls of House Gaeland.

Everyone assumes that the only threat lies outside their walls, the group of rebels led by Cillian. But something is happening within House Gaeland, something that hasn’t happened since GWI. And with all the attention focused on that, their guard is down. An evil that was under their nose all along strikes, and someone will make the ultimate sacrifice to save another.

Appearances is the second book in the Opposites series, the series should be read in order.

** Warning, Opposites is an Adult Dystopian majorly M/M series that contains explicit sexual content and relationships between gay, straight and lesbian couples. **

Author Interview:

Thank you to T.M. Smith for joining Two
Chicks Obsessed with Books and Eye Candy for an author interview.  Let’s get started!!!

This book looks fascinating. I love the idea that we end up
with a society where the norm is exactly “Opposite” what we have always
had.  What made you want to write the
book from this perspective?

Honestly, having several gay and lesbian
friends and seeing the treatment they receive at times when we are out in
public. That, and the treatment the LGBT community received as a whole at the
time I started toying with concepts for a story. I had recently went out with a
friend who was literally glared and snarled at in a restaurant we went to, and
then came home to a news story about a young gay man being beaten outside of a
club in a town close to where I live. In the interviews in days after that some
people were so cruel, “Gay’s don’t have the same rights we have.” Ummm, who is this we?
I’m thinking I’m one of the we’s if
you mean straight people and I think you’ve lost your damn mind! Just the
constant, they shouldn’t have the same rights, marriage is between a man and a

Well, imagine we woke up one day and found that everything we seem to think we have
the monopoly on were different, upside down, opposite.

What made you choose to write a mostly m/m book in this
dystopian society?

I had to have a reason that would lead to
this society being formed, a valid reason why sexuality would be a base reason
to completely re-write the way of life. Dystopian is one of my favorite genre’s
to read, I’m fascinated with the what if’s that some authors come up with and
the way they show completely plausible and outlandish possible futures.

Do you write in sequential order? How does the order you
write in affect your future books?

I do not, I wish I did. The problem I have is
editing as I write. I have to write whatever is in my head at the time, which
ever character is talking to me, and then I put it all in order later. This
style of writing can change something that would happen later in the back, if I
write something that takes place early on and it changes the outcome of the
future event. Does that make sense?
TC: Yes, but no. 🙂 That’s why you are the author, and we read what you put together in whatever man you do.

Do you have a favorite character? If so why?

I hate this question, I feel like I’m
choosing my favorite child, I love you all I swear! LOL. I’ll have to go with
Aiyan and Kaden, I always think of them as one because they are quite literally
one soul in two bodies. It’s so much fun writing these two characters that have
an undying, unyielding love for one another. They are so complimentary and
equals in every way. They are my only versatile couple and they have a nasty
habit of breaking things when they get busy.
TC: Sorry….not sorry. 🙂 These are burning questions, must still ask them! 🙂

Love the cover from the first book.  Does the Appearances cover have a similar
feel to it? Does your cover come first, or writing first?

There is a story there. The cover you see now
for Opposites was not the original cover. The first book really centers around
the twins, Aiya and Aiyan, they were the original cover art. A lot of people
questioned why there was a girl on the cover for a majorly M/M book, so I
updated it to be Aiyan and Kaden on the cover. I love how my cover artist
captured the Dominate brown of Aiyan’s eyes, the water beneath them since the
world is now over ninety percent covered in water, and the violent colors of
the sky.

I think I would have to say that the story
comes first, and the cover is drawn to fit it. For The Library what you see on
the cover is verbatim to that chapter in the book. And for Appearances my
artist captured the purple highlights in Raven’s hair and the beauty of Greece
beneath the title, which is where a good portion of the story in this book
takes place. The title of the next novella will be The Cellar and that will
feature Taryn and Thanos on the cover, in a cellar, in a compromising position.
Again, very relevant to the story.

What does your writing process include? Coffee and donuts?
A music playlist? Vampire hours?

Lots of music, I love my playlists. And music
is peppered throughout my stories as well. I have two people that play violin,
some piano, a flute and several singers. My hours are so varying I’m not even
sure they could be considered Vampire hours, I’ve been known to wake up in the
middle of the night and jot something I was just dreaming about down while it’s
fresh though.

I also read a lot of books in the genre and
watch plenty of television and movies. There is a whole bunch of Brian Kinney
and Justin Taylor in Aiyan and Kaden, and I just love Dante’s Cove.

What do you envision for the future of this series?  Are there more books ahead?

When I first started writing I knew exactly
where the series would start and end. I have a tentative list in my head for
the books as they progress…

The Library (N)

The Cellar (N)

Outkast (N)

? (N)

Each story will be followed by a novella that
centers around the groups of fathers. The Library was for Cirian and Rian, The
Cellar is for Taryn and Thanos, Outkast will differ slightly as it will be
about Cillian and Sawyer growing up as Outkast. I haven’t decided on a name for
the final novella, but it will be for Arjun and Kadam.  I plan on telling this story until I’ve
finished, whether it sells or not, it’s a story I want to tell. In the future,
I just hope everyone sticks around and my fanbase continues to grow.

What are you working on next?

The Cellar, Taryn and Thanos’s story. You
will learn more about growing up at House Orion for the brother and sister that
are loving, yet lethal.

I read that you are an activist for autism as well as the
LGBT community.  What do you see as the
ultimate utopian society for these two communities in such a challenging

Complete acceptance.

Thanks again so much for joining us T.M. Smith. And
congratulations on your new release!!!

Thank you for having me, I had a blast
answering your questions and I can’t wait to visit with you guys again when
it’s time to release The Cellar.

Blurb: In the year 2081 our planet survived global warming of an
apocalyptic scale. When the dust settled and the water receded Dr. Anthony
Smith, one of only a few hundred survivors of GWI, started society anew. Having
come to the conclusion that injudicious breeding played a huge role in the
destruction of Earth as we knew it in the twenty first century, he worked
closely with other survivors to isolate the Dionysus gene. This gene has the
ability to manipulate human DNA to ensure that all male children be born gay,
and all female children be born lesbians. A new society is born.

In the year 2300 Dr. Smith’s descendants are ushering in the twenty fourth
century having maintained control of the government that still rules society.
Twins Aiya and Aiyan are preparing to meet their matches and take control of
House Gaeland, the current ruling House. But not everything is as it seems.

Love is Love.. it knows no gender and doesn’t conform to restrictions and
boundaries. Aiyan has found his soul mate in Kaden, the prince of House Devi
that he is matched with and eventually marries. But when the person Aiya falls
in love with tests the boundaries put in place after GWI, all hell breaks
loose. And in the midst of one secret unraveling, another will emerge. There is
a growing anomaly that threatens to destroy over two hundred years of
progression. This anomaly is known as Opposites.

Three gay couples run amuck in this short story where
clothing, beds, even four walls are all optional!

Want to know what happened that night in the library?
Cirian and Rian had a fight in the library and Rian ends up naked on the desk,
on his back, at Cirian’s mercy.

Want to know how far things went with ice cream?
A romantic evening by the fire feeding his husband ice cream leads to a lot
more than heavy petting for Aiyan and Kaden.

Want to know what was going on when those birds fled?
Travelling hundreds of miles, battling the rebels and then travelling back to
House Gaeland will take it out of you. But when Tanis wants something, he takes
it. Raven is about to be bent over a tree!

A Note from the Author: I’ve taken three scenes from Opposites that were cut
short and elaborated on the shenanigans that ensued. I also focused more in the
beginning on the relationship between Cirian and Rian, to give readers a chance
to know them and their inner workings better. I hope you enjoy this free read
set in my world of Opposites!
